Dear John
thought this would be chick flick drivel but it was FANTASTIC. the storyline with John's father moved me SO much, I can't remember a movie made me so emotional LOL. Channing Tatum brings it down a tad imo, but Amanda Seyfried was great in it.

Death Sentence with Kevin Bacon - a revenge movie with a fantastic story line that kept me on the edge of my sofa. Terrific acting from Bacon, who is not an actor I've been particularly impressed with before.

Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express (the Sidney Lumet movie)
I watched it because... well, it was either that or daytime telly. It's a great movie though. Albert Finney is unrecognisable as Poirot and the all-star cast is stellar with only Lauren Bacall falling short of expectations (I always have high expectations for her though).

Remember Me - 8/10
Surprised me in all honesty. Didn't expect to like it, thought it would be a big chic flick which it kind of was in parts but I liked it and the twist at the end was unexpected too.
Rob did a good job of holding his own and showing his acting strength, although admittedly he isn't the greatest actor ever, I thought his acting performance was good.

Paper Heart - it's confusing. It's set up as a documentary about the comedienne/musician/general oddball Charlyne Yi [sic] trying to find love and eventually doing so with the actor Michael Cera.
And...some of the interviews with real-life couples about love are really sweet and poignant.
But then...it's a mockumentary. And the acting between these two is as wooden and awkward as is acceptable with other such popular 'indie' flicks (about as independent and quirky as marmalade). It just seems to be a giant in-joke between all the Diablo Cody/Judd Apatow brigade, albeit with the best and funniest stars removed from the picture. The plot is so predictable, and the main actress is...I don't know where to start.
Like, she's socially awkward to say the least. But that doesn't automatically make you funny - it makes you awkward. She CAN be quite sweet. But most of the time she has this really irritating voice and generally seems quite slow. And I don't give a ****ing crap about the people who're like "well that's part of her appeal" - NO. Comedians and comediennes are SUPPOSED to be charismatic and confident and able to cope with public pressure and the stage/performance. Being awkward and weird for the ****ing sake of it stopped being funny with Noel Fielding.

The Karate Kid. You know, nostalgia is a funny old thing and seeing as I have very fond memories of the original I watched this with alot of apprehension and possibly a little hostility because I've never been a fan of filmmakers pillaging old "classics" (classics in a childhood sense) in an attempt to make a fast buck. Having said that, I have to admit that I quite enjoyed the film for what it is: silly harmless fun, and Jackie Chan was the perfect man for the role of the quirky mentor.
My only reservation is that by lowering the age of the kids involved you kinda obliterate the adolscent tensions that were key in the original series and it looks like a bunch of tellytubbies trying to kick the shi^e outta each other rather than the hormonal, angst ridden teens that Ralph Machio had to contend with.
Still though, Will Smith's kid is pretty good in the part and it wasn't as crap as I expected it to be.

Trailer

The start of this movie is really dark as a Crazy women who kidnaps kids pulls there eye out and as little girl tries to escape , then there parents come and they finds out what she did to their kids and beat the old lady and they hang her, then it turns out to be movie that people are watching in a cinema.
One of the work goes back to cinema late at night, so his friend could record the movie and sell the movie before it get released however anyone who sees the end of the movie, strange things start to happen in the cinema.
This movie had great story and some really good turns in the story I didn't not see coming, there was some scenes that made me JUMP!, while I still getting over that scare and other scene that made me scream (I must be getting old lol ) as I was not ready for that scare.
This movie can be confusing near the end but it dose kind of make sense, The acting from everyone in this movie is great, also I like the fact it's a short movie and it never gets boring.
If you like Midnight movie (2008) I liked it, it was fun, you will really like this movie as it so much better and a lot more creepy then Midnight movie (2008).
I going give this movie 8 out 10

I watched "Inglorious B." (2009) yesterday morning and Quentin Tarantino again makes another good movie.
Christoph Waltz is the Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (I can understand why he won a lot of awards for best supporting actor for playing this character), Col. Landa is not just a Jew hunter but tracks down enemies of the third Reich. Col.Landa is a person to be feared, but also Christoph plays the part with such humour that you begin to like him even though he is a Nazi.
Melanie Laurent is Shosanna Dreyfus who is the only survivor of the killing of her family at the order by Col. Landa. She escapes and we find her in Paris being the owner of a small cinema.
Brad Pitt is Lieutenant Aldo Raine he is the organizes a group of Jewish Soldiers known as " the B asterds" to enter Occupied France and kill Nazis . They gain a reputation by sending back a surviving Nazi with the Swastika carved into their forehead and also one of the B asterds is named: the Jewish Bear who bashes people to death with a baseball bat.
Diane Kruger is Bridget Von Hammersmark who is a german actress and also an undercover agent for the Allied Army.
I really like how Quentin T. unfolds the characters stories separately but to converge together in the plot to kill the Nazi Leaders including Adolf Hitler.
I would give this film a 9 out of 10
.
Book of Eli - guessed the twist at the end but still liked it - Denzil Washington rocks

Saw Breathless at the cinema... this is about the millionth time I've seen it, but it's such a great movie. Comedy, romance, guns, a fugitive on the run... Breathless has it all.
Jean Seberg looks incredible too.

Tropic Thunder. I thought at the start I was really going to dislike it but ended up thinking it was alright. Robert Downey Jr is very good, if a little incomprehensible at times. He stays in character and does the voice for the DVD commentary which is very funny; it is maybe even better than the film itself. :D

The Spinal Tap one is classic too, as well as the bonus footage that was never used in the flick, which is about another hour and a halfs worth. Great stuff.

Was in a bit of a sci-fi mood over the last week so decided to throw on a few flicks that I haven't seen in years.
First off was Outland - Boy, has the one aged badly with Sean Connery - dependable as usual - in a thriller that basically plays out like High Noon in space, along with plot holes the size of Jupiter. Doesn't hold up well as a story, but a fairly diverting watch.
Silent Running - This is retro, trippy nonsense, and all the better for it. It's quirky and offbeat, with a nice turn by Bruce Dern in the lead, but I have no idea how such a thread bare storyline was ever produced as a feature length picture. Think it would play out better if I was on the waccy tobaccy while watching it.

It was a shame Ive seen all the sequels and the remake and sequel without seeing this film. I thoguht it was okay, but preditcable becuase I knew what was going to happen, but i fully enjoyed it, and some different scenes than the remake so. Overall I found the acting to ruin the movie, god awful.

Straight Time
A brilliantly understated crime drama, with Dustin Hoffman playing an ex-con trying to piece his life back together, facing a world that refuses to accept him and old impulses he tries desperately to control.
It's a film that reaffirms a belief I've always held when it concerns Hoffman. You can have your DeNiro's and Pacino's, but if you're looking for a character actor of profound skill and nuance, then I'd go for the Hoffmeister everytime. He plays an unlikeable and often violent character here, but with him in the role there is such a pathos involved that it's very easy to forget who you're watching and become immersed in the storyline and character's troubles. Yeah, I loved it. lol

Vampires Suck (2010)
This yet another spoof, this time it a spoof of Twilight’ movie.
I do seem to like a lot Spoof movies, such as all the scary movies, Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth, Not another teen movie, Superheor movies, i did enjoy those movies
I did not like date movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie or Stan Hellsing and i have not seen Meet the Spartans.
However for Vampires Suck, i did not hate and i did not love it and i did enjoy the movie.
The movie start of really poor, some of the jokes are way over the top and do not work, but after 20 mins of the movie, it did get a bit better then were some okay jokes scenes which made me laugh few times but it's much better then the god awfull Disaster Movie and Stan Hellsing put together but not as good as any of the Scary movies or even Superhero movie.
if you don't like spoof movies, MISS IT, and if you liked Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth, then you might like this too .
i am going to give this 4 and half out 10 lol

Apparently it is legal.
Last film I watched was Hancock, the Will Smith film. I generally liked it. The premise is good and some of the ideas about a super-hero as an outsider and not like everyone else are actually quite moving in places. Not sure the overall plot was all that great though.

The Sting. One of those few films that is endlessly rewatchable, with a great script, nice ensemble cast and an evocative score, setting and cinematography. The thing I noticed about it this time, apart from it being hugely entertaining as always, is the meloncholy that permeates the whole thing. It's as if the director was longing for this type of film and story to be told again simply because, for better or worse, movies at the time were exploring far darker themes and contempary issues, and that old school style of filmmaking was disappearing fast. I suppose it's because of it's delightful playfulness the the film eventually went on to win Best Film at the Oscars - it's whimsical and sure footed in it's execution - just like it's intricate plot - and, of course, Paul Newman is in it. Winner all round really.

The Men Who Stare at Goats. Another 'inspired by true events' film - it's an amusing story of the US army's attempts to use new age / psychic powers.
The best bits are the comic bits that are taken from the book (haven't read) - like the flashback scenes. There is a main plot involving the Iraq war, which I didn't think was as successful.

Very clever stuff. The story itself wasn't as complex as people make out, but it's just the way it's told. Nolan's best film to date, no doubt about it. And (shock horror), DiCaprio was actually very good - the best performance he's given in his carrer by quite some distance. The only department it really lacked in was character development - I can't say I cared much for any character or felt like I knew them on any level (excuse the pun).

Les Valseuses
This 1974 'road movie' was an early lead role for Gerard Depardieu and is typically French in more ways than one. Two young criminals living out a dangerous 'beyond good and evil' lifestyle, frequent casual nudity and lots of dark comedy. I found the fluctuations between the more comic situations and the more disturbing scenes where the lead rogues sexually assault various women a little bit jarring. It would also be an understatement to say that I haven't seen this sort of stuff before in French movies. Allusions to the movies of Godard are frequent and I found the movie's weakest moments were when it dealt with political themes. A scene towards the end of the movie depicts Depardieu's characters stealing a car from a middle class family and then seducing their daughter. The daughter agreeing to it as an act of rebelliousness towards her parents. This was one among many moments of high implausibility that rob the movie of its ability to suspend your disbelief and shed some insight into the characters.
So all in all, a movie which succeeds as a dark comedy, but fails as a character study. In this respect, Les Valseuses is not in the same league as the great movies of Godard and Truffaut, but it is never the less interesting to see the object-subject' relationship between male and female characters cemented by Breathless all those years prior to new, unsettling extremes. But where that said movie gave us a genuine insight into the mind of a morally blank hero, Les Valseuses gets tied up in overly broad political motifs.
I'd give it a begrudging recommendation, if only for Depardieu's charismatic, believable performance alone.

Milk.
I hesitatingly watched this seeing as I've long thought that Sean Penn had strayed too far up his own rectum (no pun intended) to give any performance of note and also with a hint of bitterness, as I had championed Mickey Rourke for last years Oscar. Anyway, all my misgivings were unjustified.
What we have here is a vibrant, transcending piece of cinema that has so much more to say than just a simple, by-the-numbers and routine polemic statement for gay rights and their plight. This film is about living; about feeling free to express yourself and find your own truth, and it's anchored by an absolutely astounding performance from Sean Penn, in his most heartfelt and playful piece of acting since Fast Times. He doesn't play Milk as a hero, but as a caring, funny and flawed individual, imbued with a joie de vivre as well as a passion for the pursuit of civil liberties. It's honestly such a breath of fresh air to see him so open and loving.
There's such a warmth to the whole film - it's practically glowing and any flaws that it may have simply disappear in it's atmosphere. They should have shared that Oscar between the two of them!
Oh, and I'd urge anybody who enjoyed the film or have even a passing interest in the history of the period to check out The Times of Harvey Milk on youtube. Absolutely brilliant documentary.

I can only vaguely remember that one. Is that where Depardieu shows the other fella the best love making technique and tells the girl to get more involved? It was a fairly out there film if I can remember it correctly.
The last film I saw was a porno. I only watched it for 5 minutes, but that was enough. It was a bit repetitive.

Catch Me If You Can
I'm a sucker for a true film and liked this the first time I saw it so decided to watch it again tonight.
Far fetched yet fascinating to know it happened
I watched "Bronson" last night..
It was the true story of Charles Bronson, Britains most mental prisoner ever.. He was sentenced to 7 years for holding up a post office and stealing 40 quid or summat.. and has never left jail, spending over 30 years in solitary confinement..
I thought Tom Hardy who played Bronson was fantastic; I haven't seen him in anything before, but I was impressed.
I found it very funny at bits without obviously being a comedy... I'm going to read one of Bronson's books now
Apparently (and this made me laugh) one of his books is a tutorial style exercise book entiled "Working out in Small Spaces" hahaha

Oh he's in Inception? I'm thinking about going to see that..
But yeah a talented young (and fairly hot) young actor :)

From Here to Eternity.
Old fashioned wartime melodrama, but with enough grit and tension to still appeal. What surprised me most about it was the performance of Frank Sinatra's - never knew the chap could act so well. Rumour has it that he got the part with a little help from his mobster buddies, but everybody must have been delighted with the results.
Oh, and how good was Montgomery Clift? Actually everybody is wonderful in it.

Yeah, 5 is shi%3 except for the moments between Kirk, Bones and Spock which I think are just lovely.
Oh, watch Grizzly Man. Brilliance.
I've seen this now, a very interesting story and character. I didn't quite know what to make of him actually.

My Sister's Keeper
It was good but nowhere near as good as the book. The book made me cry buckets, the film made me shed a tear. I was surprised how good Alec Baldwin was, when I saw that he was playing Campbell I wasn't sure but he pulled it off brilliantly.

You honestly couldn't have written some of the stuff he comes out with during that film. Fascinating insight into man - a man totally on the edge obviously in this case - and his connection with the world and society. I thought it was a stunning film.

I watched it Lee, based on your recomendation and the fact that I'd seen Hardy in Star Trek: Nemesis (don't say a word lol) years ago and never understood why he hadn't made a name for himself in film. Really thought he had quite a bit of talent and it became apparent after the first 10 mins of Bronson the extent to which it has blossomed. He's fantastic in the part.

Erm.. Star Trek sucks :xyxwave:
Yeah.. Hardy has a new fan in me :)
I've been reading about the real Bronson and I know he's an idiout but some of his hostage demands over the years have been really funny!

Ah, your taste is up your hole. lol. Star Trek is class. Yeah, always thought Hardy could act but never knew he could do what he did in Bronson. Amazing stuff. Why wasn't he nominated for an Oscar?

You're right! Why wasn't he? I'm going to write a carefully worded, heartfelt letter to the Academy!

The Hustler. Dark and gritty morality tale, taking place within the confines of seedy pool rooms and populated with all manner of low-lifes, losers, criminals and other lost souls aching for something more from life, but quite unaware of how to find it or basically incapable of trying.
Oh, and Paul Newman is in it. Brilliant piece of filmmaking.

Not a bad film, but I didn't find it remotely sad though, as I had been led to believe it was.

The Duchess.
I was pleasantly surprised with this one, in particular the performance of Kiera Knightley, who's limited acting range actually suits the formal, staid enviroment of a period drama, with looks and stiff upper lips being more important than variables and nuances in character. Having said that, she does have a few scenes in the film that make me actually think that there's a budding actress underneath it all, and she's ably supported by a stellar cast, with Ralph Fiennes being his usual magnificent self.
Nice music, beautifully ornate costumes and set designs make this a feast for the eyes and ears, and the drama is compelling enough as it progresses. So yeah, not too shabby at all really.

Yeah, they almost got all the names of the characters correct. I was quite amused by the way they cobbled the story together without the interplay of the Greeks Gods etc.
Was nice to see how they managed to keep Achilles alive till the end. According to the girlfriend Brad, wasnt that much buffer than me. So a score there

Lol, stop bragging! I have to smash a wall down with a sledge today and I@m outta practice. Nearly killed me doing it a few days ago. Will you do it for me He-Man?
Troy was just a mess. Total mess. Peter O'Toole couldn't sit through it all apparently.

Both hands at the end when swinging, then slide one hand up to the head when lifting, take your time and breath properly.
That info is as good as me being there.
Yeah another big budget Yank changing history, but it saved me a little work.

Nothing like I thought it was going to be. Quite a let down in the end.
The Descent Part 2, not as good as the first film but still worth watching.
Shank - 6/10 - Thought this would have been better.
Death at a funeral - 7/10 - Some quite funny scenes.

Pretty freaky. It didn't follow the traditional horror formula that I thought it would - which isn't a bad thing - but I still don't quite know what to make of it.
