We watched Captain America yesterday, was meant to watch Avengers afterwards but we never got round to it.

I thought CA was good but a bit too long for what it was. I thought Thor was the better film.

I watched Brokeback Mountain last night. I thought it was a great movie, heartbreaking but great. The ending was so sad I just. 9/10 tbh.

Pitch Perfect

I thought the same! Most of the jokes felt completely flat, and bits of it were really cheesy. The Asian girl and Fat Amy were the saving graces of the movie.

I got around to watching Avengers yesterday, it was as close to being perfect as any film I've ever seen

It was fun, the script was good and hilarious and it was just amazing. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the alien plot felt a bit tacked on.

Watched a couple of movies in the last few days

IT - Not scary at all, I was disappointed tbh

Pitch Perfect - The singing was amazing but it was all a bit cheesy and predictable

Mean Girls - Now this was funny, and Gretchen is SO hot, no wonder Richard from BB7 said Imogen was Gretchen Weiners. The storyline was all really good too, just really enjoyed it. Very good film despite it being THE chick flick!

The Dark Knight Rises.

Flawless

10/10.

well if I HAD to nitpick...

Miranda turning out to be Talia Al Ghul was predictable as her character didn't serve much point otherwise. It probably would have been a greater shock if they established her character in an earlier film. I admit I didn't expect the child in the pit to be her though, I thought that she was gonna turn out to be just another child of Ra's.

Watched a few this holiday break...

Somewhere- Watched because of KArissa and Kristina with really low expectations, but it was surprisingly better than i expected, although REALLY slow paced, but i like slow paced movies so around 8/10

Big Fish- Watched this many times, IMHO one of Tim Burtons best movies 10/10

Looper- Way better than i expected. perfect mix of story and action. 9/10

We Bought A Zoo- VERY predictable but wasnt horrible... 7/10

Life of Pi- Stayed true to the book it was pretty good, thought the graphics were amazing 8/10

Would actually probably recommend all of them ( except We Bought A zoo but that was still ok )

Just watched 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World'.

It's uh... I loved it, and I think Keira Knightley was awesome, and Steve Carrell does his 'awkward loveable loser' routine to a tee, and it's all technically excellent (although a little rushed, but then it's the end of the world...)

But it just made me feel horrible. Like, it was sweet, and had funny moments, but I don't know. Maybe it just tapped into the innate survival fears and everything. It just left me really sad. And because it takes you down all these "what's the point?", "what if...?" routes it's potentially troubling to some viewers. I wouldn't advise against watching it though, because it's powerful and quite visceral... just maybe dissuade you from watching it and expecting a kind of kooky comedy or rom-com.

Robin Hood 8/10 - The Ridley Scott version with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Was expecting a rehash of Prince Of Thieves but it was a very enjoyable origin story. Thought it was excellent.

Dredd 8/10 - Lena Headey has become the go to actress for villainous roles (see Cersei Lannister) and she is perfect as the ruthless drug lord Ma-Ma. The special effects are amazing and it was a highly enjoyable film.

Drive 10/10 - One of the best films I've seen in recent years. Ryan Gosling is absolutely superb and should have got an Oscar. Fact. :-)

Keith Lemon: The Film 0.5/10 - Can't believe I'm even mentioning this in the same post as Drive but this is one of the worst films you'll ever watch. You have been warned. (And I even like Celebrity Juice!)

Django Unchained : 10/10
(Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L.Jackson, Kerry Washington, Bruce Dern, Don Johnson, Jonah Hill, Walton Goggins)

It hits on every level, from uncomfortable to laugh-aloud comedy. The violence was a bit cartoonish(hey, anyone up for 40 bowls of tomato soup being thrown around the room?!), but it added a dash of fun to the film. Christoph Waltz and his German accent is integrated nicely in a very realistic way, and I absolutely adored his character in this one. Each and every actor brought their best. A few nice cameos as well. Nothing to see here, go watch! Best 2 hours and 45 minutes you'll have spent not being at home.

Django Unchained - 9/10

So glad Will Smith turned down the role of Django because Jamie Foxx is five times the actor he is, really made the role his own aswell you couldn't imagine anyone else playing the character now. Leo was really amazing in that table scene, and even more so now that I just read a lot of it was made up on the spot, as great as Waltz was in the film I think Leo should be nominated for the Supporting Actor Oscar over him (or both of them should be.. haven't seen the other actors nominated yet though), just on that scene alone, although his one on one scenes with Jamie Foxx were amazing aswell. But yeah, a great film, think it could probably have been about 20 minutes shorter, but that's the only complaint really

Les Miserables - I saw this last night barely knowing a thing about it. I knew some stuff about Fantine but that was about it, so when I watched it pretty much everything was a surprise. I was blown away by the whole movie anyway. The acting was spectacular, and the singing was pretty damn good too when you consider that the majority of the cast aren't professional singers and that they sang live on set (even if it was mastered during post production). Anne really was the standout in the film anyway. When she sang I Dreamed A Dream, dear God it was more than heart wrenching, especially with all the scenes that led up to it before hand. She definitely deserves that Oscar she's been nominated for.

It was just a great film. People actually applauded at the end of it. I've never ever witnessed that happening in a cinema before. 9/10.

it's probably cos his best stuff (Pulp, Reservoir) was so overlooked and he's now getting awards for IB and Django... I haven't seen the latter but they're not as good. Still excellent though.

Mine was Lincoln. All very technically great and lovely and I enjoyed it but it's not a film I'd feel compelled to watch again. Maybe cos the story's so well-documented, idk. 8/10.

I'm not saying its his best film but no Tarantino film scores anything less than 10 IMO. Waltz, Foxx, Jackson and especially DiCaprio are all incredible (only Kerry Washington is underused). One of the most deliriously entertaining films I've seen this decade to be honest. Just watch it!

The Impossible 9/10
I suppose the fact that its a true story probably gives this film more emotional value, but it is one of the best directed and beautifully acted disaster films I've seen. Naomi Watts really deserves that Oscar.

Silver Linings Playbook 8.5/10
Ignoring House At The End Of The Street, Jennifer Lawrence can do no wrong, and this doesn't disappoint. I don't think its worthy of being the first film in 32 years to get Oscar noms in all 4 acting categories, but its a really enjoyable film, very funny at times and definitely worth watching.

Silver Linings Playbook.

Wanted to see what all the fuss was about and was a little disappointed on three accounts:
- It was billed as a comedy. Lols there were not. Obviously didn't expect laugh-out-loud moments but there was no wit, or dark humour, or any let-up really from the drama.
- Which leads me onto point two: it was so angry and aggressive all of the time. The fights and arguments were just tedious and really poorly-written, just totally unbelievable.
- And that leads me onto gripe #3: the premise. The bet for the restaurant was totally ridiculous, the argument and settling of the argument with superstition was absurd, and the ending was so corny and predictable.

THAT said, the performances were great. Not so wowed by Cooper (although it did make me take him seriously after a string of bad movies) but Lawrence & De Niro were very convincing. The pacing and soundtrack and directing were all nice too. I'd give it a 7/10.

Les Miserables (the new one)

I loved it. A part of it was filmed in Bath so we (the housemates) spent a while going "oooh! the Weir!" when Javert was about to commit suicide [if you complain about spoilers, sod off. It's a 19th century classic.]

The only bits I didn't like were the shaky cameras during the battle scenes, and Russell Crowe's voice was abysmal. The rest of the cast were excellent (Hathaway, Jackman) or to be expected (Bonham-Carter, Baron Cohen), and the overall feel of it was lovely. The ending was gorgeous too.

I came into it not having seen anything of a musical production, or a previous film, or even the novel, so I was a total newcomer to Les Mis. I loved it. 9/10.

The Sweeney. Far-fetched testosterone-fuelled effing and blinding, fist fights, firefights, head butts, "you're nicked, you slaaag", car chases, shooters, Ray Winstone and Ben Drew. What's not to adore? 8/10

Loved Ray Winstone's nod to "Scum" with the batteries and the sock.

My last 2 films have been Blade Runner (again) and In Bruges (again)

Blade runner as it's a classic and you have to try very hard to get the release on Blu Ray that has Harrison doing the voice-over which is just perfect of a modern Raymond Chandler/Bogey crime story (Blade Runner anoraks hate it)

In bruges cos I was in bruges for new year time and it's just like the cinematography.

Girl escapes insane cult, attempts to get her life back to normal but keeps having flashbacks. That's the pitch.

Elizabeth Olson is the best actor in the film, but that's not saying much - the rest range from dull and miscast to incompetent derisory.

The script, such as it is, is uninspired and repetetive.

The story starts with the runaway from the cult hiding in the forest to avoid the cult-members chasing her then she decides to go to the local burger bar in the town just down the road. So, why did she stop so soon when she was on the run, where did she get the money, why did the cult-member who immediately found her then just leave her there? Unnatural and a bad start.

After that the Martha was relocated 3 hours away into a luxurious lakeside mansion set in stunning scenery but the film itself failed to go anywhere in creating any point in the viewer caring for any of the characters or bothering to fathom out rhyme or reason for the characters' actions (wouldn't a localised major crime-wave in the Catskills have raised the interest of a law enforcement gency?), least of all at the eventual abrupt end of this seemingly interminable and pointless movie.

John Hawkes, "playing" the cult leader, asserts that that no one dies, that death is just a transfer of life to an alternate reality - well, I died ..... of boredom.

Highly overrated and totally missable.

I do. The reason is that Taken 2 is an upfront action film and doesn't try to be all meaningful and up its own arse. it's a brain-in-neutral kind of film. Nothing wrong with that.

Magnolia, as far as I'm concerned, tried too hard. The only character I had any sympathy for was the male nurse, the rest were just unlikeable. The music was too loud over much of the dialogue, although that was obviously a "thing". I laughed out loud at the frogs. Was I supposed to? Probably not. Pretentious. That is all.

Magnolia is an overlong pretentious bore and I say that as a snob that eats that type of **** right up. It completely missed the memo that less is more.

Argo.

All very good and I loved the cast, and the story did grip me... but the film didn't wow me in the same sense that Django Unchained or Les Miserables did. So I'd rather they won Best Picture. Still a great movie though - 9/10.

Warm Bodies - 3/10. I was really disappointed by this. I'd heard so much about how good it was but in reality the film was muddled and cheesy. I mean when it was comedic the whole thing worked, but the romance detracted from that and it just ugh it felt so corny. The special effects were absolutely dire too. On the whole I just think it's massively overrated, but seeing as it was adapted by Summit, I'll give the book the benefit of a doubt.

Great reviews, but so over the top that incredulity was not just strained but broken ..... :hmph:

The mid-air crisis and subsequent crash-landing was very realistic, tho scarcely believeable, but later on when the pilot's alcohol level was "revealed" as 0.24 my jaw dropped to the floor ..... :amazed:

I was married to an alcoholic and I know that alcoholics can function on extraordinary levels of alcohol, but a BAC of 0.18-0.25 would mean the pilot would be disoriented, confused, dizzy, and have exaggerated emotional states.

Vision would be disturbed, as would be perception of colour, form, motion, and dimensions.

The pilot would have an increased pain threshold and a lack of muscular coordination.

The pilot would stagger or lose the ability to walk and have slurred speech.

Apathy and lethargy wouid be typical.

The pilot couldn't even drive a car let alone fly a plane.

I let the movie roll on, but when the pilot restarted drinking (and driving with a quart of vodka and beer chasers) I lost interest on this OTT time-waster ..... :bored:

Shame

The acting performances were excellent (well, Mulligan and Fassbender were the only two main characters really), and I loved the mood and pace of it, but it was lacking something.

The characters (brother and sister) had this weird history and connection ("We come from a bad place") that was never explored and whilst it added to the intrigue about them, it sort of blocked me being able to warm to the characters on an emotional level. The ending with Mulligan's character slitting her wrists seemed to prompt Fassbender's character to have a breakdown (again, suggesting they both had pent up problems and history), and that seemed to heal his sex addiction - what with the final shot - but I dunno, I think the movie was just lacking closure.

That said, it had a lot of Fassbenderwang so it's worth a watch. 8/10. (I'm not this shallow it was a good movie overall)

A movie (barely) "based" on fact which proved surprisingly enjoyable - obviously the role of the CIA, and specifically Mendez, was the focus of the film so much of the detail was lost but, apart from the unnecessary Arkin/Goodman, the actors were believable, the pace excellent and the tension engaging.

Also watched the Black Sheep/Tommy Boy duo again this week from the mid 90s, with my daughter, who loves that slapstick action as a kid. How can you not laugh at Chris Farley tumbling down half of a mountain, taking a break, thinking he's safe, and then going for another few rounds? Or the snide remarks of David Spade? Or fat guy in a little suit? etc, etc. Only had to hide the audio for a few scenes, but both movies are fairly tame. Black Sheep 5/10, because it pales in comparison after watching the much more amusing and aggressive Tommy Boy(7/10), which is always a joy.

And it's a damned shame that Farley isn't around anymore. His cartwheels, country language in place of poor language, and physically eventful tantrums replete with hysterics will be missed. http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp32/sharkattack_torrential/weep.gif

Flight - 5/10. I wasn't sure about this one from the outset and I wouldn't have gone to see it myself, but my Mum was pestering me to go with her so I relented. The trailer put me off it and the majority of the movie I didn't like. From the trailer I was expecting some sort of courtroom drama centred around Denzel Washington's character avoiding a sentencing for improper conduct or something. And whilst the movie did centre around that, I did not expect it to be focusing so heavily on addiction throughout, and how Whip (Washington's character) overcomes it. I just thought it was poorly handled and crude wherever his alcoholism and drug abuse was involved anyway. The only part which wowed me was the crash sequence near the beginning because it's so gripping and terrifying, but it kinda outshines the rest of the film because it's just on another level of quality I thought. The rest of it seemed to drag and plod along.

This story was a real surprise, it was slightly complex. There are layers of stories separated by time, some are hundreds of years apart. The actors play different roles in the different eras, overall although it's long (nearly 3hrs) it's very watchable and rewarding 8/10

Nope, I did. It's just something I would never want to rewatch.

I thought it was fascinating at times, and I loved the relationship between Phoenix's character and Hoffman's and the way Adam's tried to exert control over the master.

It also reminded me of the kinda scientology cult, and I guess how it must have started.

I gave it 5 out of 10 just because of the way I felt at the end of it, kinda like everything in life was meaningless.

Yea, I can understand that. It definitely a depressing film. I thought Phoenix was brilliant in it, probably my favorite performance of the year.

I think it was definitely suppose to have parallel to Scientology.

8/10 - One of the best most recent British films, Sean Bean's Character was amazing as well, the lesser known actors in the film were really good, Usually get bored of Crime Thriller's but from Start to Finish this was interesting and in a lot of parts it felt really realistic as well

8.5/10 - Adrien Brody with his best Acting performance since The Pianist ( not really that hard actually since every movie he has been in since The Pianist has been awful ) but he was Amazing in this, suited the role really well and James Caan played a really good character as well, it's a pretty downbeat movie but the actual story of him forming relationships with other teachers and his Students is well done

Beasts of the Southern Wild - 8/10. Quvenzhané Wallis was absolutely phenomenal. For a little kid like that to play a role so convincingly really shows that she has serious talent. 4/10 - First half of the movie was really slow and didn't seem to be going anywhere but it picked up the last hour or so and gradually improved and the ending was done well but apart from that there could have been major improvements to the story and the cast didn't really do it many favors really either, Taylor Kitsch is a great Actor but he wasn't suited to the role at all and Lynn Collins is a terrible Actress ( haven't really seen her in anything else before this and i'm not surprised )i can see why it flopped pretty badly, it could have been a much better film then it was with the right Casting and a better Story, you'll probably enjoy it more if you just watch the last hour because more then likely you will end up switching it off or falling asleep in the first half

Skyfall.

Not really a Bond fan but really enjoyed this. Although it was great, it could have been better. The end felt rushed and Silva didn't really get all that much screentime.

They could have cut some of the padding from the first half. It was like they took their time slowly building the story up and then ran out of time to give the ending justice.
