Andre-Pierre Gignac scouting report and video: The inside track on the Arsenal target

With Arsenal trying to fill a Emmanuel Adebayor-sized hole, Arsene Wenger is expected to turn his attentions to signing Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. Below is all you need to know about the French international.

Toulouse say that they have already rejected a €15 million bid from Lyon for the 23-year-old who has been capped thrice for Les Bleus and who sucks his thumb to celebrate hitting the back of the net. But it is believed they will accept a fee of around €20m for Gignac.

He made his debut with Lorient in Ligue 2 on 13 August 2004, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute with the score tied 1–1 against Châteauroux. Within seconds of coming on, he scored the winning goal giving Lorient a 2–1 victory.

The burly forward certainly knows how to strike a ball, judging by last season when he scored 27 goals, including a number of free kicks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMM89o72vMM&feature=PlayList&p=3FB9C3C2D954795E&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=38

Gignac was handed more of a prominent role in the Toulouse team last term, following Johan Elmander's move to Bolton in the summer. Last term he won the Trophee du Meilleur, the trophy handed to the top league goalscorer in France.

And in April he won his first cap for his country.

Hes 23.
6 foot 2

He was top scorer last year with Team Toulouse..
with 24 goals
Karim benzema only scored 17 who was second.

And they only finished 4th so he must be pretty good.

Norway international midfielder Bjorn Helge Riise is set to complete a move to Fulham for a reported £2m.

The 26-year-old younger brother of former Liverpool left-back John Arne has held talks with the Premier League side and had a medical on Monday.

The younger Riise, who has won 16 international caps, was due to join Cardiff in 2003 but the move fell through and he moved to Standard Liege.

He switched to FC Brussels after just a season and is currently at Lillestrom.

A Fulham statement said: "Norwegian midfield player Bjorn Helge Riise has travelled to London for talks with the club and is currently undergoing a medical examination.

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed local rivals Manchester City as a major threat to Manchester United's Premier League title this season.

City manager Mark Hughes has this summer spent millions on building a squad to break into the top four.

But United boss Ferguson said: "It won't be easy for them to win anything, even with the players they have bought.

"I can't look at them as our main competitors. Liverpool and Chelsea are our main competitors."

DUBLIN/MADRID, Jul 20: Real Madrid are reconsidering their options in case they have to give up on their bid to prise Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso away from Liverpool - though Madrid may sell one man in theother direction, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar being linked with Arsenal.

Madrid have been keeping a close eye on Alonso for more than a year, under both previous president Ramon Calderon and now Florentino Perez.

The player has lately made little secret of his discontent of the way in which his contract has been eroded by the fall in value of the pound sterling - and by the further slippage which will be inevitable after the forthcoming increase in UK income tax rates.

Madrid remain hopeful of signing Alonso from Liverpool but, with the player now en route with the Anfield club on their pre-season tour, are starting to consider an alternative option in Getafe’s Esteban Granero.

The former Spain youth international comes from the capital and played for Real's youth sides. He starred at the World Youth Cup in 2007 and was then loaned to Getafe. Granero was linked with Tottenham during the short-lived managership in north London of Spanish manager Juande Ramos.

30stone
20-07-2009, 08:55 PM
The former Ajax man, who joined Madrid only last January, has turned down an offer from Stuttgart and has been linked with Arsenal following the north London club's sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City.

Hull to begin talks with Zamora

Hull City will open talks with Fulham striker Bobby Zamora in the next two days over a £5m transfer.

A fee was agreed last week and Zamora, 28, must decide whether to move to the north of England for the first time.

Tigers boss Phil Brown told BBC Radio Humberside: "Bobby landed on Friday afternoon and was suffering badly from jet lag so needed the weekend to rest.

"Hopefully Monday, Tuesday I'll be sitting down with Bobby, bringing him up here and showing him round."

Brown turned his attention to Zamora after missing out on Manchester United's Fraizer Campbell, who opted to join Sunderland and Marc Antoine Fortune, who signed for Celtic.

Zamora joined Fulham from West Ham last summer but scored only two goals in 35 league appearances for the Cottagers.

The former England Under-21 international made his name with Brighton but failed to establish himself after a move to Tottenham.

He joined West Ham in February 2004 and scored 40 goals in all competitions for the Upton Park club.

Another player who could be making the move to the KC Stadium is former Charlton and Portsmouth winger Jerome Thomas.

Thomas, 26, is on trial and played in the weekend wins at North Ferriby and Winterton.

Brown added: "It's quite positive, he's certainly been impressive in terms of his wing play, impressive in the way he can go past a player and produce a cross or even a goal.

"They're areas we want to improve on and the early signs are quite positive. We haven't sat down to talk terms yet or where his future lies. It's a case of him looking at us and us looking at him."

Meanwhile Hull have dismissed weekend speculation linking them with Manchester City forward Benjani, 30, Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, 26, and versatile Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork, 20.

GERRARD AFFRAY TRIAL IS AJOURNED

The trial of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and six other men in connection with a fight at a Merseyside nightclub has been adjourned.

The 29-year-old, appearing at Liverpool Crown Court, denies a charge of affray relating to the incident at the Lounge Inn, Southport, last year.

A 34-year-old businessman was injured at the bar on 29 December.

Proceedings were delayed on Monday for legal discussions and are expected to get under way on Tuesday.

Mr Gerrard, from Formby, Merseyside, had been celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United.

The other defendants include Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Guildford Road, Southport; and Accrington midfielder Robert Grant, 18, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland.

Four men from Huyton, Merseyside, are also charged. They are: John McGrattan, 33, of Rimmer Avenue; Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive; John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road; Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is in talks with Notts County about becoming director of football, BBC Radio Nottingham understands.

The Magpies, who were recently taken over by a Middle-Eastern consortium, and Eriksson's agent Athole Still are refusing to confirm his involvement.

Earlier newspaper reports had linked Eriksson to the club's managerial role.

The 61-year-old, who spent five years in charge of England, was sacked as coach of Mexico in April.

BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater said: "Claims that Notts are to appoint Eriksson as manager are wide of the mark.

"It is far more likely Eriksson will be brought in as director of football."

If Alan Hutton stays fit then thats a good deal for Villa and I wouldn't want to see him go.

Jenas, £10million is not bad for an overated midfielder, he lacks true bite and strength, will always be an average player that has some great games when his team are dominating.

Rangers manager Walter Smith says he has not received any offers for defender Madjid Bougherra.

French club Bordeaux have been linked with the 25-year-old Algerian, who has been in superb form since his £2.5m move from Charlton last summer.

"Despite reports to the contrary there have been no bids for Madjid," Smith told the Rangers website.

"We haven't been contacted by Bordeaux and that's the end of the story as far as we're concerned."

Rangers chairman Sir David Murray said last week that he has no plans to sell the club's top players after gaining entry to this season's Champions League.

In January, Rangers said they would have to offload at least one major player as they counted the cost of an early European exit

Nasri out for up to 3 months with broken leg

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri broke a bone in his lower leg during a training session Tuesday at the club's preseason camp in Austria and will be out for up to three months.

Arsenal confirmed that Nasri had sustained a fractured fibula in his right leg, but did not immediately provide further details on the French international's injury.

The club said it expects Nasri to travel back to Britain on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Nasri was signed from Marseille last summer as a replacement for Alexander Hleb, who left for Barcelona. Nasri scored on his debut against West Bromwich Albion last season. He had a total of seven goals in 44 appearances.

Arsenal arrived at its preseason camp this week and has a friendly against SC Columbia scheduled for Tuesday.

The team has two other friendlies in Austria scheduled for next week before returning to London for the Emirates Cup on August 1-2.

Hearts are closing in on two strikers as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.

West Brom striker Craig Beattie and SV Mattersburg forward Ilcho Naumoski are on the Tynecastle club's radar.

Former Celtic forward Beattie has enjoyed loan spells at English Championship clubs Sheffield United and Crystal Palace.

Naumoski scored Macedonia's winning goal in the World Cup qualifying win over Scotland in Skopje last September.

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo will find out this week if Racing Genk striker Adam Nemec will move to Tynecastle, but the Scottish Premier League club face competition from German clubs including Kaiserslautern.

The Edinburgh outfit have already signed former Red Bull Salzburg striker David Witteveen.

He became Hearts' fifth summer signing after defenders Dawid Kucharski, Ismael Bouzid, midfielder Ian Black and Spanish winger Suso Santana all moved to Tynecastle.

Beattie joined West Brom from Celtic for £1.25m in July 2007.

Roman Pavlyuchenko to Arsenal? Spurs striker tipped for £6m move across north London

Arsenal could find a new striker just a few miles up the Seven Sisters Road.

Sensational reports in Russia claim Tottenham Hotspur have offered Roman Pavlyuchenko to their arch-rivals for just £7million.

Arsene Wenger looks like being forced into the transfer market following the £25m sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City and injury to Samir Nasri that will keep him out for about three months.

Sportsmail reported this week that Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac is Wenger's preferred target, though Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh, Hoffenheim's Demba Ba and Newcastle's Obafemi Martins are also in his sights.

However, Russian tabloid Tvoi Den claims Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has gone directly to Arsenal to offer 27-year-old Pavlyuchenko, who has bought a house near London following his £13.8m move from Spartak Moscow last summer.

He has been linked with Villarreal, Stuttgart, and Besiktas among others, and an associate of his says he knows nothing of apparent interest from Roma.

Viktor Kolar, who is not Pavlyuchenko's primary agent but played a part in the deal taking him to Tottenham, said: "I don't know anything. By reading the papers I learned that the club (Roma) would make a move for the player, but with regards to myself no one has made me aware of anything.

"There's nothing concrete because there have been no offers made either to the club or to the player.

"I don't have any idea how they can write that Roman will be at Roma. I spoke to the management and I know that next year he will be part of a serious project.

"He still has many years on his contract and he intends to prove also in England how much he is worth."

Tottenham, meanwhile, have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich hitman Luca Toni.

The Italy striker's starting place is in doubt at the Allianz Arena, which is not healthy heading towards next year's World Cup finals.

The 32-year-old is said to be an alternative to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who is believed to be close to accepting an offer to leave Real Madrid for Stuttgart, despite interest from Tottenham.

Report: Wenger To Make Offer For Real Madrid's Huntelaar

Arsenal are set to bid for Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as the seek reinforcements in the front line following Emmanuel Adebayor's departure to Manchester City, according to the Metro.

Real Madrid will be looking to recoup the £20 million they paid for the Dutch international in January and Huntelaar is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

Stuttgart are also closely monitoring the player as there seems little room for Huntelaar among the Galacticos in the Spanish capital, and Arsenal will have to act fast to seal the deal.

So far, the Gunners have added just centre-half Thomas Vermaelen during the transfer window and the fans are desperate for more signings after four years without a trophy.

AC Milan are eager for England midfielder David Beckham to repeat his loan spell at the club this season.

Beckham, who plays for LA Galaxy in the United States, spent five months on loan with Milan last season at the end of the Major League Soccer campaign.

"The most likely hypothesis is that Beckham plays for us from January until the end of the season," said Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

"Then he returns to America without all the fuss that happened last March."

But Galliani dismissed speculation that the Italian giants would try to buy Beckham, who has suffered a negative response from some Galaxy fans on his return to LA.

A price in the region of £11.2m has been mentioned for Beckham, but Milan said "insurmountable financial obstacles" would restrict their involvement with him to another loan deal.

SC Columbia: 1
* Lehner 35

Arsenal: 7
* Bendtner 36, 44,
* Ramsey 39, 83,
* Van Persie 56 (pen), 73,
* Gallas 7

Nicklas Bendtner, Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey scored two apiece as Arsenal kicked off their mini-European tour with a comfortable victory over SC Columbia.

Arsène Wenger’s side did suffer a minor embarrassment when a freakish goal from Patrick Lehner gave the amateurs a shock first-half lead.

That delighted a record crowd of 6,900 at the Schwarzlackenau Stadium but it merely stung Arsenal into action. Bendtner equalised within a minute and grabbed another after Ramsey had fired the visitors ahead.

Van Persie slotted home a penalty early in the second half and nodded in Bacary Sagna’s cross to make it five. William Gallas got in on the act before the end and Ramsey fired in late on to round off another useful workout.

Wenger’s men will slowly crank up the intensity as they put the building blocks in place for the new campaign. Their next stop is just across the border in Hungary for Monday’s friendly at Szombathelyi.

The build-up to this game was dominated by the news that Samir Nasri will be out for up to three months after fracturing his right fibula in training. It is a substantial blow to Arsenal even if the return of Tomas Rosicky will compensate for his loss.

The Czech was rested for this game after making his long-awaited comeback at Barnet on Saturday but we did get a first glimpse of Emmanuel Eboue, Denilson, Abou Diaby, Ramsey and Bendtner this summer. They made the starting line-up while Kolo Toure, Bacary Sagna, Van Persie and Alex Song were named on the bench. Armand Traore and Philippe Senderos, back from season-long loan spells, were also among the substitutes.

The biggest name on the SC Columbia teamsheet was their 44-year-old free-kick specialist Julius Simon - although he would not get a chance to show off his party trick on this occasion. The Slovakia international scored 10 times last season as his team finished halfway up the Austrian Fourth Division.

The amateurs from Floridsdorf weren’t expected to trouble their illustrious visitors but that didn’t stop the locals packing out the Schwarzlackenau Stadium – with the help of a small but boisterous Arsenal contingent. Beer and music were in plentiful supply as a festival atmosphere kicked in well before kick-off.

As expected the game was played almost exclusively in the Austrians’ half but Arsenal’s radar was off in the first half-hour or so.

Andrey Arshavin slotted wide after two minutes, Bendtner followed suit shortly afterwards, Ramsey also missed the target from just outside the box and Thomas Vermaelen squandered a decent chance for his first Arsenal goal, lashing a shot wide after Ramsey’s clever chip had fallen for him eight yards out.

Meanwhile, Gerhard Taschwer earned his corn in the Columbia goal. The keeper pushed away Diaby’s fierce shot at his near post and denied the Frenchman again when he tried his luck from long range.

Despite the pedestrian pace of what was essentially a training exercise, it seemed a matter of time before Arsenal broke the deadlock. Then Columbia raised the biggest cheer of the evening with a goal completely against the run of play.

It was a farcical one from Arsenal’s perspective. Mikael Silvestre played the ball back to Almunia but the Spaniard’s first touch was slightly heavy. As Lehner slid in, Almunia’s attempted clearance ricocheted off the striker and into the net.

Suitably embarrassed, Arsenal were stung into action. Within a minute they were level as Diaby charged down the right channel and squared the ball for Bendtner to tap into the roof of the net.

The scoreline soon had a more predictable look to it. Within three minutes of the Dane’s equaliser, Ramsey evaded a challenge on the edge of the Columbia box and slammed a shot into the bottom corner.

Four minutes later, Bendtner doubled his own tally. Running from deep, the striker flicked the ball to Ramsey and then collected the return pass inside the box before jinking past Taschwer and rolling the ball into the net.

It was a sign that Arsenal could pick up the pace at will.

Wenger made eight changes at the break with Senderos deployed in a defensive midfield role – quite possibly a first for the Swiss. And two of those substitutes linked up for Arsenal’s fourth goal as Traore’s cross was handled and Van Persie fired home from the spot.

The Dutchman so nearly set up a fifth for Denilson on the hour mark but, once again, Taschwer did well, rushing out to block the Brazilian’s low shot.

Wilshere and Ramsey returned to the fray with 20 minutes to go as Arshavin and Eboue were given a breather. Regardless of their personnel, Arsenal kept the scoreboard ticking over.

First Van Persie buried a header from Sagna’s right-wing cross and Gallas did likewise with 14 minutes remaining. Then Ramsey rounded things off with a fizzing shot which flew in off the post.

Masch 'wants Spain move'
Midfielder's agent claims Liverpool player is unsettled in England

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is keen to secure a move to Spain as he has grown 'tired of life in England', according to his agent.

The Argentina international is a reported target of Real Madrid and Barcelona, but the enforcer remains part of Reds manager Rafa Benitez's plans.

However, Mascherano's representative, Walter Tamer, has claimed the 25-year-old has grown unsettled in the Premier League and is eager to move abroad.

Tamer is quoted by Infobae.com as saying: "Barcelona is the easiest deal to set up as Javier wants to go to Spain. He is tired of life in England.

"His wife has not been given a permanent visa. She has to go through an odyssey each time she wants to go.

"Liverpool refuse to sell, this can be overcome with an extraordinary offer."

Striker to snub Gunners move

Arsenal, 12:58, July 22, 2009

Arsenal are set to miss out on Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh who says talks with Sunderland are at an 'advanced stage'.
The 25-year-old is one of the most sought after strikers of the transfer window with Arsenal known to be in the hunt to sign him as Arsene Wenger looks to replace Emmanuel Adebayor.

However the Black Cats are now in pole position to do a deal after the Moroccan claimed talks have progressed well.

"Bordeaux have made me a more attractive proposition to stay," Chamakh said in L'Equipe. "So contrary to what some people say, I don't want to leave for money but to experience a new challenge.

"In France, it is impossible that I could go anywhere else than Bordeaux, because that club will remain in my heart. However, I have made the wish to have a new adventure in England, and I would like that idea to happen.

"The contact which has reached advanced stages is with Sunderland. Maybe for some people it is not a great club, but it is fine to me. I know it can be a step forward and it is what I want."

Why do they say that?

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar stalls on Stuttgart move as Spurs and Arsenal bid to snatch the Real Madrid striker

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is waiting to see if there is a north London scrap for his signature before confirming a move to Stuttgart.

The Real Madrid striker has stalled on negotiations with the German team amid suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur have followed up weeks of interest with an 11th hour formal bid.

Reports in Spain also say Arsenal have entered the race following Emmanuel Adebayor's £25million move to Manchester City.

Madrid last week accepted Stuttgart's bid of £15.6m - that could rise to £17.3m with add-ons - but Huntelaar has taken his time agreeing the move.

German newspaper Bild were confident enough on Tuesday to report it as a done deal, but talks between the 25-year-old and Stuttgart slowed.

Spanish newspaper AS said the official explanation was that they were still haggling on Stuttgart meeting his £60,000 a week Bernabeu wages, but that unofficially Huntelaar was waiting for better offers.

It is understood that the former Ajax striker would prefer to move to the Barclays Premier League.

Weekend reports suggested Chelsea were interested, but Sportsmail understands the Blues are happy with their forward line after Didier Drogba committing himself to a prolonged stay at Stamford Bridge.

Sven-Goran Eriksson insists he can take Notts County from League Two to the Premier League after signing a five-year deal as director of football.

The former England manager spelt out the ambitious plan, which comes after the club was taken over by a Middle-Eastern consortium last week.

"I could have gone elsewhere and earned more but I'm here for the challenge."

Eriksson, 61, will work alongside current manager Ian McParland with the aim of getting promoted from League Two "as soon as possible".

"I always wanted to come back to the Premier League because it is the best League in the world," said the Swede.

"I have chosen a little bit more of a difficult way to do it. It will take some years, but fater speaking to the chairman Peter Trembling and the investors, I am sure we will do it.

Defender set to move on

Arsenal, 13:22, July 22, 2009

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted defender Philippe Senderos has options to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Senderos appears to be no longer in the plans of Wenger after he spent the whole of last season on loan at AC Milan and a permanent move away looks to be on the cards.

Milan are not in the running but Senderos does have his admirers and there have been suggestions that Aston Villa could offer him the chance to stay in the Premiership.

Villa need at least one central defender to replace Martin Laursen and Senderos is said to be a target.

"He has offers and it is open," Wenger revealed when quizzed about his future. "He has come back here with us still looking for solutions but he is still yet to decide on his future."

Flying Dutchman Nacer Barazite could feel a bit aggrieved he wasn’t selected for Arsenal’s Austrian training camp after netting for the third year in a row against Barnet, yet the 19-year-old has set his sights on making Arsène Wenger’s XI in the coming months.

After featuring on 36 occasions for Derby County last season, the leggy front-man has returned with two fantastic performances. First at Barnet on Saturday, and then Monday nights 3-2 win over Lincoln City. Speaking shortly after the full time whistle, Nacer admits his delight at returning to the club and took the time to identify what he’s learnt.

“I’m delighted to be back and play in the Arsenal shirt again.”

“I’m happy with my performance against Barnet, and my goal. I like to play against Barnet and score. I think I’ve changed physically, and mentally. I think I’m a lot stronger now. But I think I can get better.”

At Lincoln Barazite wore the number 10 shirt, the same number his idol Dennis Bergkamp donned during his legendary spell with Arsenal. Naturally, comparisons have been made between the two Dutch forwards and they returned on Monday and the former Nijmegen player confirmed his desire to play in Dennis’ former role.

“I’ve always said I don’t mind where I play, but if I had to chose a position I’d say in the number 10.”

Young Guns’ Sunday article regarding the future of Nacer sparked mass debate, with many suggesting he could go on loan again while some believed he was ready for the first-team. When asked, ‘Naz’ also seemed to be in the dark over his future but revealed his preference.

“You never know. Hopefully it (the future) will bring positive things, and hopefully I can play in the first team at Arsenal. I like to play for Arsenal, I want to play for Arsenal.

“My target is to make my debut for the first team, in the Premier League.”

It’s expected that Arsène Wenger will sit down with Barazite following the completion of the Austrian tour to thrash out an arrangement.

Good to see he should stay, I think he is an exellent player.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar: Why Aren’t Liverpool & Manchester United Bidding for Spurs & Arsenal Target?

Arsenal and Tottenham are reported to be battling to sign Klaas Jan Huntelaar according to press reports in Spain and Holland after his talks with Stuttgart stalled. The departure of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City will give Arsene Wenger the funds required to enter the bidding for the much admired striker.

This news will come as a bitter blow to both Tottenham who were thought to be involved in a straight fight with the German club for the Dutchman. However, with a number of top Premier League clubs chasing new strikers it begs the question why are there not more teams bidding for the deadly Dutchman?

Dutch striker Huntelaar may have only joined Real Madrid back in January but the club are looking to cut their losses after their recent massive spending spree. A poor end to the Spanish season seems to have heralded the end of the Dutchman’s short stint in Madrid with Arsenal now joining Tottenham at the front of the queue of known Premier League admirers.

Tottenham have signed defenders Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker from Championship side Sheffield United.

Everton had bid £5m to land Naughton, while Aston Villa were also believed to be admirers of the 20-year-old, who has instead opted for Spurs.

A fee has not been disclosed but could be close to the £10m mark for the duo.

Walker will return to Bramall Lane on loan as part of the deal with Spurs, and the Blades will also be able to take Tottenham players on loan.

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell said: "Having Walker available is a very important part of our strategy and it's exciting to have the chance to talk with Tottenham and judge whether any other of their players might fit into our squad.

"If we think that someone could help us we could take them on a short-term loan throughout August and, if required, extend it

Arsenal Star Link to City Re Surfaced.

With Chelsea captain John Terry expected to sign a new deal at the club, and Everton reluctant to sell Joleon Lescott, Manchester City will reportedly renew their efforts to sign Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.

The Metro report Mark Hughes is desperate to sign at least one experienced centre-back, and the newspaper suggests Arsenal would be willing to sell the player if they bid around £15 million for the 28-year-old.

Hughes has been a long-time admirer of the Ivorian having initially asked about the player’s availability in January.

The arrival of Thomas Vermalen would suggest one of either Toure or William Gallas would make way for the £10 million former Ajax defender, and the Metro even suggests Wenger is keen to add further reinforcements to his backline. Wenger is allegedly still keen on Bolton’s Gary Cahill, and may yet return for his former player Mathew Upson, now at West Ham, should he sell Toure to City.

Gunners ace set for speedier return

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri should return from his broken leg within six weeks and not three months.

The Gunners boss made the prediction following the news Nasri had suffered a fractured fibula during training on Tuesday. And, despite initial reports expecting the French international to be out of action until October, Wenger insists his recovery will take half that amount of time due to there being no complications with the break.

"Unfortunately he fractured his fibula and he will be out for six weeks," said Wenger.

"He accidentally nicked the ball away from somebody having a shot on goal. Unfortunately he got kicked and broke his fibula. It's not a complicated one, it's a simple one but it will take six weeks to heal."

Wenger is also confident that he has plenty of alternative options to cover for Nasri during his absence with Andrey Arshavin, young forward Carlos Vela and fit-again Tomas Rosicky all possibilities.

He added: "The options are Tomas Rosicky, who is back, and in [those] two months Eduardo will be back as well. We do have offensive options but we don't want to lose important players before the season starts."

Huntelaar rejects move to Stuttgart, waits for Arsenal & Tottenham bids

Reports in the Spanish press this morning claim that Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has rejected a move to Stuttgart, after discussions with the Bundesliga club.

Both AS and Marca claim Arsenal is now Huntelaar’s likely destination as a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor whilst Tottenham are also interested.

Huntelaar was not keen to play in the Bundesliga even after an 18 million euro deal had been agreed between Real Madrid and Stuttgart.

Arsenal are believed to now be the front runners for Huntelaar’s signature as the former Ajax striker is eager to play Champions League football.

Meanwhile, Huntelaar will return to training with Real Madrid tomorrow after the Los Blancos squad return from Ireland.

Although he was out of favour for much of his time at Real Madrid, Huntelaar scored eight goals in 20 games following his 27 million euro move from Ajax. In the first half of last season the 6.1ft striker had scored eight goals in 14 games for the Amseterdam giants.

Video evidence of the Dutch international striker (21 caps, 11 goals) can be seen on the video below.

AND MASSIVE NEWS FOR ARSENAL FANS!!

Wenger in for Real star

Arsenal, 15:36, July 24, 2009

Arsenal are reported to have joined the race to sign Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who is also wanted by Tottenham.
The Dutch international is on his way out of Madrid after they drafted in Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema and at one point looked to be heading to Stuttgart.

However, the 26-year-old has turned down a move to the Bundesliga as he wants to play in the Premiership with the Gunners and Spurs both keen to do a deal.

Much will depend on the players wages but both clubs should be able to match Real's £16.5million valuation.

Huntelaar's agent Arnold Oosterveer said: "We want the best option for the kid without taking too much time over it. Now the decision rests with Real."

Only 16.5m

As long as his wages are over 80k i think he will come!!

Need to put in an offere ASAP!!

Arsenal's Eboue on way to Fiorentina
25.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Arsenal are set to cash in on Emmanuel Eboue.

The Sun says Eboue is on his way to Fiorentina for £6.5million.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was prepared to let Eboue go there in a part-exchange deal when he attempted to land Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo from the Italians.

Melo ended up heading to Juventus for £17.6m but Fiorentina are still interested in the Ivorian.

Defender Eboue, 26, was booed by his own fans last season and does not appear to have a future at The Emirates.

City linked with Gunners raid

Arsenal, 14:13, July 25, 2009

Manchester City could make another move for Arsenal defender Kolo Toure if they give up all hope of signing John Terry.
City almost landed Toure during the January transfer window and it looks as though they could make another move if Chelsea refuse to cash in on their captain before the big kick off.

City boss Mark Hughes is looking at alternatives and former Gunners star Emmanuel Adebayor is hoping for a reunion with Toure.

"Kolo is a great friend of mine. He is a big player for Arsenal and a top defender," he revealed. "He has been playing in the Premier League for seven or eight years now so he knows this league really well.

"If the manager could get him, he can get exactly what this club wants and needs from him. I'm sure about that. I know how good Kolo is and I think what Man City needs now is a top quality defender like him or John Terry."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says he would have no problem in bringing former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira to White Hart Lane.

Vieira, 33, played more than 400 games for Arsenal, but is said to be eager to join the Gunners' bitter rivals.

And Redknapp, speaking after Spurs 1-1 friendly draw with Barcelona at Wembley on Friday, said: "I'm still interested in Patrick and he wants to play here.

"He hasn't killed anyone, he's just a great player who played for Arsenal."

Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in nine seasons with the Gunners and scored the winning penalty in the 2005 FA Cup final shoot-out against Manchester United with his final kick in an Arsenal shirt.

The Frenchman moved to Juventus in the summer of 2005 for £13.7m, before switching to Inter where he has won the last two Serie A titles.

Bolton Wanderers have signed defenders Zat Knight from Aston Villa and Sam Ricketts from Hull City.

The pair have agreed three-year deals at the Reebok Stadium after arriving for undisclosed fees.

They are Bolton boss Gary Megson's third and fourth signings this summer as he looks to strengthen his squad.

Megson has already picked up midfielder Sean Davis from Portsmouth while defender Paul Robinson signed from West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan.

After impressive displays for Fulham, centre-back Knight, 29, was capped by England against Colombia and the United States of America in 2005.

The 6ft 6ins defender joined Villa from Fulham in 2007 for £3.5m but has struggled for regular first-team football and started only 13 Premier League games last season.

Malaga 1 Aston Villa 0
Fernando slotted home a late winner to secure victory for Malaga over Aston Villa in the Peace Cup.

Malaga took the spoils when Fernando tapped home (79) after Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel had pushed out a low cross from Jose Juan Luque.

Villa lost Emile Heskey early on to a head injury and Friedel made good saves from Oscar and David Gonzalez, while Isaiah Osbourne blazed over for Villa.

Preston 2 Stoke 1

Neil Mellor's first-half double continued Stoke's miserable pre-season run on Dean Whitehead's debut.

The Potters missed the chance to go ahead when Liam Lawrence had a penalty saved in the ninth minute, and Mellor pounced when Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen misjudged a corner.

The striker then beat two defenders and rifled home from 15 yards, though Richard Cresswell headed a consolation.

Bristol City 2 Wolves 0

Two goals in five first-half minutes were enough for Bristol City to see off Wolves in a friendly at Ashton Gate.

Danny Haynes broke the deadlock for the Robins after 33 minutes, cutting inside Christophe Berra and slipping the ball past Wayne Hennessey.

It was 2-0 to the Championship side five minutes later as Nicky Maynard turned 30-yards out and unleashed a fierce drive into the top corner.

Leeds 1 Blackburn 1

Substitute Paul Gallagher netted a last-minute penalty to earn Blackburn a draw against Leeds in a pre-season friendly at Elland Road.

Alan Sheehan was adjudged to have fouled Benni McCarthy and Gallagher, made no mistake from the spot.

Beckford had put Leeds ahead five minutes into the second half, pouncing from close range after Luciano Becchio had nodded on another Snodgrass corner.

Notts County 2 N Forest 1

Sven-Goran Eriksson was in the stands at Notts County to see his new side beat rivals Forest 2-1 at Meadow Lane.

The League Two side opened the scoring in the 55th minute when new signing Luke Rodgers reacted quickest to a mistake by Forest defender Wes Morgan to beat Lee Camp with ease.

Craig Westcarr then crossed for Lee Hughes to double the lead, before Lewis McGugan smashed in a long-range strike.

Oldham 1 Sunderland 2

Sunderland were fortunate to come away from Boundary Park with a victory after being outplayed for most of the game.

Adam Reed capitalised on a woeful pass from Andy Holdsworth to fire the visitors into the lead and a similar mistake by Reuben Hazell allowed David Dowson to double their lead.

Latics pulled one back when Jean Y'ves M'Voto hauled down Keigan Parker and Pawel Abbott scored the penalty (55).

Peterborough 3 Fulham 3

George Boyd scored twice in the last five minutes to earn Peterborough a draw in a friendly against Fulham.

Clint Dempsey produced a neat finish to open the scoring for the visitors (21) before Bobby Zamora grabbed his first from Eric Nevland's pass and then added a second (45) to put Fulham in control.

Aaron Mclean pulled one back after Pascal Zuberbuhler's mistake before Boyd's close-range effort and penalty.

Sheffield Wednesday 0 Hull 0

Hull were indebted to Kamil Zayatte as they maintained their unbeaten pre-season form at Hillsborough.

Owls striker Leon Clarke had the best chance of the first half after he was sent clear by Marcus Tudgay, but Matt Duke did well to keep out his effort.

The hosts came closest to a winner after the break but Zayatte cleared a deflected shot from Akpo Sodje off the line, before Sodje headed just over.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester City "are a small club with a small mentality".

The Scot is unimpressed by City signing Carlos Tevez when the Argentine left Old Trafford at the end of last season.

A city-centre billboard appeared soon after, saying "Carlos Tevez, welcome to Manchester" under a sky-blue graphic.

"It's City isn't it? They're a small club with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United; they can't get away from it," he said.

"They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff."

Manchester City have spent heavily in recent weeks, with Emmanuel Adebayor signing from Arsenal for about £25m, midfielder Barry coming from Aston Villa for £12m, Paraguayan frontman Santa Cruz costing £18m from Blackburn, and Tevez arriving for £25m.

Arsenal Plotting Swoop For Chelsea's Salomon Kalou - Report
The Gunners' new striker could come from just across town...

Arsene Wenger is seeking to brink Salomon Kalou across London to join Arsenal.

Having lost Emmanuel Adebayor, the Ashburton Grove outfit are in the market for a striker, but will not pay over the odds for anyone.

However, according to the News of the World, the Gunners believe they can snare Kalou for a price of around £7 million. The Ivorian's contract expires next summer, so Chelsea might be keen to cash in on him now.

Carlo Ancelotti has previously stated that he wants Kalou to remain at Stamford Bridge, but the fact that he has not yet been offered a new contract suggests that all offers will be considered. He currently earns £45,000 per week, and Arsenal are ready to improve that to around £70,000.

A 'Chelsea insider' was quoted as saying, "Salomon is flattered by Arsenal's interest, but at the moment he is fully committed to Chelsea."

Spurs, Arsenal move to rattle Man City over Lescott bid
27.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester City are offering to triple Joleon Lescott's Everton salary.

The Daily Star Sunday says City are ready to TREBLE Lescott’s wages to £105,000-a-week.

That shows the scale of the problem Everton face in trying to keep their England defender.

City have already had one bid of £15million rejected by Everton, who pay Lescott, 26, £35,000-a-week.

Arsenal also like Lescott, as do North London neighbours Tottenham, who currently have three top central defenders injured – Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson.

But no-one in the Premier League can compete with City’s financial muscle.

Arsenal eyeing £17m Adebayor replacement

Arsenal want Roma’s Mirko Vucinic to replace Emmanuel Adebayor, according to a report today in the Daily Star.

Talks are under way for £17million rated Vucinic, following the £25m sale of Adebayor to Manchester City.

The Montenegro star, 25, has insisted he is happy in Rome, despite also being linked with Manchester United and Tottenham.

He is under contract for another four years, but Roma are reluctantly prepared to sell.

They aren’t in a position to make any signings themselves unless they make a significant sale.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen on Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, valued at £18m by his club and also Sunderland target Marouane Chamakh, who has impressed with Bordeaux and Morocco.

He has also been linked with Newcastle’s Obafemi Martins and Demba Ba at German club Hoffenheim, plus another striker based in the Bundesliga – Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko.

But Vucinic is emerging as the striker most likely to be added to Wenger’s line-up.

Adebayor’s exit has not concerned Wenger, who believes the Gunners will not miss the man who scored 16 goals last season.

Wenger told the Daily Star Sunday: “It’s a very important season for us and I believe we are in a very strong position.

“Big clubs lose big players. AC Milan have lost Kaka but go on. Arsenal have lost big players before but we go on.”

**** sake why do we go for **** people. Just put a 17m offer in for huntelaar and we have got him why offer for **** strikers?!?!

WENGER READY TO SPLASH OUT ON HUNTELAAR AND CATTERMOLE

ARSENE WENGER is planning a double dip into the transfer market for Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Wigan’s England under-21 midfielder Lee Cattermole.

The Arsenal manager has come under fire over his lack of spending this summer with some Gunners fans worried that they are falling behind their top four rivals.

Wenger’s only purchase during the close season has been £10million Ajax defender thomas Vermaelen.

But now the Frenchman, armed with £25m from the sale of Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City, is ready to splash out again.

The Emirates Stadium boss believes that Huntelaar, who has had an unhappy time at the Bernabeu since leaving Ajax, can be his ‘fox in the box’ and grab the goals which could help land the club their first trophy since the FA Cup in 2005.

And, with the need to bring in more English talent to comply with UEFA rules governing Champions League squads, Wenger is prepared to test Wigan’s resolve to hang on to tough-tackling Cattermole.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who took Cattermole to Wigan from Middlesbrough during his time as manager, has had two bids rejected by the Latics, the last believed to be around £6m.

Both Wenger and Bruce know that new Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is reluctant to part with one of his key players as he aims to prove himself in the Premier League.

It is understood that Wigan will not consider doing business until the bidding reaches £10m.

Real Madrid are anxious to sell players to help pay for their lavish summer spending spree on new ‘galacticos’ Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

the Spanish club wants around £16m for Huntelaar, who has rejected a move to Stuttgart.

Spurs are also interested in Huntelaar but have been put off by his £70,000-a-week wage demands.

Arsenal have just signed off a similar wage deal for Robin van Persie, who is a big Huntelaar fan and fancies linking up with his Dutch international colleague in the Premier League.

Wenger believes the feisty Cattermole will bring the missing bite to the Arsenal midfield to complement the skills of creators like skipper Cesc Fabregas.

Manuel Almunia, meanwhile, is sure Arsenal can cope without Adebayor and feels there is enough quality in the squad to challenge for major silverware.

Alan Shearer admits he has no idea if he will be appointed Newcastle boss on a full-time basis while uncertainty over the club's ownership persists.

Owner Mike Ashley has yet to appoint a permanent manager as he looks to sell the Championship club for £100m.

Shearer took over on a short-term basis in April but was unable to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.

"I am the same as everyone else, I am in limbo - I don't know what is going on," said the 38-year-old.

"I know as much as you. I would dearly love it to be sorted out one way or the other then the club can move forward.

"Everyone is telling me there are people in to buy the club. If that is the case, then great."

At the end of last season Shearer held talks about taking over as manager a full-time capacity and said he hoped to learn of Newcastle's decision by the end of the first week in June.

Which strike target best suits Arsenal’s style of play?

Since the departure of Emmanuel Adebayor Arsenal have been linked with a host of potential replacements. Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh and Real Madrid’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have been consistently linked throughout the summer, Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou was reportedly approached by Arsene Wenger last summer, while Obafemi Martin’s name is a perennial on speculative Gunner shopping lists. Add to the mix new names such as Roma’s Mirko Vucinic, Hoffenheim’s Demba Ba, Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko and Toulouse hitman Andre-Pierre and it appears that almost every in-form hitman in Europe is a target for the red half of north London.

Which striker most suits Arsenal’s style of play?
Klass-Jan Huntelaar, But any of the 3 below.

Who would you most like to see in the Red and White?
1 Klass-Jan Huntelaar
2 Edin Dzeko
3 Andre Pierre Gignac

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Set For Busy Presentation Day At Barcelona
Barcelona have signed their man at last and are now preparing to show him off...

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a busy schedule on his first official day with Barcelona after flying into the Catalan capital on Sunday ahead of signing for the club.

The Swedish international's arrival has caused great excitement at Camp Nou, with many believing that the striker will be even more effective than the departing Samuel Eto'o.

Before he can be presented as a Barcelona player, Ibrahimovic must undergo a rigorous medical exam on Monday at Camp Nou and also at the Hospital de Barcelona.

There will then be time for a quick rest and relaxation at his hotel in the city before it is off to the club's offices once more following lunch.

At 18:00 CET, Ibrahimovic will sit down and put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract, with his agent present along with club officials, including president Joan Laporta.

Then it is off to the Sala Paris above the club's shop in the forecourt for a press conference, where the Swede will be grilled about his hopes and expectations.

The last act of the long day comes when Ibrahimovic will don the new Barca kit and be paraded in front of the club's supporters on the newly-relaid Camp Nou pitch.

Barca with Zlatan > Real Madrid.

Arsenal’s Gael Clichy Clarifies Criticism Of Adebayor's Manchester City Move
The French full-back has moved to respond to the weekend report that implied he believed Adebayor left for City for the money.

Emmanuel Adebayor's desire to sign for Manchester City was not made with money solely in mind, according to Arsenal defender Gael Clichy, who has moved to clarify a story that arose in the English media last weekend which suggested the contrary.

“I felt really bad about this,” Clichy informed the club's official website. “I am not a player who would talk like this; say a name and talk this way about a friend. I asked the newspaper not to mention any names and unfortunately they did.

“If you read the article you will see that I am not saying any names – 'Ade' or anyone else. That is not the way to do it. If I need to say something I will go out and say it myself.

“Saying big names in a big article like this when I did not say anything, I think it is wrong. I just wanted to clarify this.

“Only Ade knows why he went and we have to live with this. He was a good player for us but now he is gone and I don’t want to talk about him anymore.

"But good luck to him and I will see him on the pitch later this season.”

Revealed: The stars Aston Villa are chasing to replace Gareth Barry

Jul 27 2009 By Bill Howell

Aston Villa are still in the market for a successor to Gareth Barry and have been told to find £12 million for Sporting Lisbon’s Miguel Veloso.

Villa assistant John Robertson had last week said the club were not in pursuit of the Portuguese midfielder.

“We are working on some players like any club but this player is not in our plans,” Robertson was quoted as saying.

But it is understood Veloso remains a possibility along with Tottenham’s Jermaine Jenas.

Veloso is quality!

Everton remain confident midfielder Steven Pienaar will stay at Goodison Park and sign a new contract.

Skysports.com revealed earlier on Monday that the South Africa international had rejected a fresh deal with the Toffees after unsuccessful negotiations.

Everton are eager tie their key assets to long-term contracts but Pienaar, who has two years remaining on his current agreement, has yet to commit.

However, the Goodison Park outfit remain positive that the 27-year-old will soon put pen-to-paper on Merseyside.

An Everton source said: "Everyone is still talking, and we are confident there will be a happy outcome."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a five-year contract with Barcelona to end his three-year spell at Inter Milan.

Barca have paid £40m while Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o moves the other way to the Italian champions on a five-year deal and Aleksandr Hleb arrives on loan.

Inter have got the best out of that deal.

Crouch needs to settle at a club because he has been switching teams quite often for the last eight years or so. I think that if Crouch doesn't do well at Tottenham, he won't be in the World Cup squad next summer. Then, from that age, he will only get worse, which will probably see him joining a Championship side.

You also have to consider his goalscoring record; 87 goals in 292 games (in club football), which isn't great. At Tottenham, he will have to score at least 15-20 goals next season if he wants to be taken seriously.

I assume that they will be rotated throughout the season, I guess it isn't doing them any harm in having another striker.

There is no chance that Tottenham will finish higher than Arsenal, absolutely no chance.
