Do you reckon Stacey or Kat is more of a soap legend?

Our Stace is far more legendary imo and should be front and centre!
Kat. She's one of the last soap characters who are recognisable even to non soap viewers and part of probably the soaps most famous moment.

Stacey, along with Ronnie, is probably the shows last iconic characters that made an impact but I wouldn't say they were as big as the legends outside of soap viewers.

The biggest problem is Kat has got nowhere near her original stint since she returned in 2010 because her story was essentially finished.

Although if her characterisation is more like January 2016 when Charlie died then they could still save her.

Stacey's the same though 2014+ hasn't been a patch on her original stint.

Jean didn’t help by not making up her mind about whether she wanted to be bipolar or mentally disabled at the time though. That was the state of the writing for Jean under Kirkwood.

I bloody hated Jean after Stacey left.

Every time she pops up now she’s manic and troublesome. Either join the dots with the darker character she was in the mid-noughties or let her piss off for good.

Maybe her sausage surprise is the reason she’s returning full-time. It killed off poor Ollie. Pity she wasn’t working in the pub kitchen when Aidan was around.

I wouldn't call her troublesome. The last 4 years she's popped up whilst being happy with Ollie.

I just see it as ditzy Jean is her as a person regardless and when she gets overexcitable that is the manic high side of her condition and then obviously the moments in the bath etc are her manic depressive side. Also, I imagine given the heavy smoking/drinking she was prone to when we first met her, she probably took all manner of other drugs she wasn't supposed to so she's essentially a little cabbaged too.

I know she smoked loads up until 2010-ish and she was already ditzy by then. The smoking’s the last aspect of rough Jean they cling onto for a while in her regular stint.

And is it just me but didn’t she look better with that hairstyle she rocked in the late noughties (the non-curls)?

Since then, Stacey's storylines include her friendship with Shabnam Masood (Rakhee Thakrar), a relationship with Martin Fowler (James Bye), a fling with Shabnam's fiancé Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami), possessing a mystery key, being electrocuted, giving birth to a son, Arthur, developing a rare mental illness known as postpartum psychosis, discovering her deceased father had another family, being accused of hurting her son by Carmel Kazemi (Bonnie Langford), which leads to the premature birth of her daughter Hope Fowler and cheating on Martin with Max, which leads to a strained relationship between the couple.

Kat is returning to Albert Square after a lengthy break, along with Big Mo, played by Laila Morse.

Jessie, 46, has now declared BBC bosses should bring back more members of the Slater family.

She wants to see Kat's daughter Zoe, played by Michelle Ryan, back in Walford along with sisters Lynne (Elaine Jordan) and Little Mo (Kacey Ainsworth).

The actress told The Mirror: "I’d love Michelle, Kacey and Elaine Lordan, but I’m sure they’re busy doing other stuff.

"We’ve got a new Slater, Hayley, played by Katie Jarvis, who is fantastic.

"We’ve done a few scenes together and she’s a perfect Slater."

Jessie added of the new storylines for the Slaters: "We’re going back to our roots 18 years ago, with the hustle and bustle of the Slaters, supporting each other, arguing with each other, laughing, it’s just great."

She even wants Zoe recast

After she quit, many hoped Michelle would return to reprise her role in Walford but she shot down any speculation last year.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Michelle explained: “It's not part of my life any more, I won't be going back.

“I feel it would be the right thing to recast the role.

“There will be some actresses out there that are desperate for that break.”

Which is funny because she won't return to EE but will re-play her character that appeared in Doctor Who, but via an audio series

There is a twist however, with Michelle’s character Lady Christina de Souza, making her comeback in a series of audio productions.

When she last appeared on the cult series, Michelle’s character vanished after flying off on a double decker bus.

“Being asked to revisit the role of Lady Christina was a very easy decision. Adventure, a sunny climate and mind-boggling scenarios are included in the scripts, everything I remember of my Doctor Who experience.

Of course it is. But... the ones they're bringing back are the ones that haven't been gone long.

You suggested them all staying in the show and never having left. Do you think it would be a ratings grabber if they were just there for 18 years? No. The excitement is in the return of an old favourite. In that regard it's Kat that is the draw here, not really Mo or Jean.

What storyline would you give Sharon?

Tbh, I can imagine her being a tough character to storyline for seeing as she's been involved in so much already. (Although that doesn't seem to stop their creativity with Phil).

However, I would say before she's given any kind of storyline of her own, they need to sort out her characterisation.

Let's see more of her and Phil's marriage and their struggles to maintain equality, and also give her a bit of dignity back. Let's see the strong character, not the doormat. Even if it's in her support of other characters like Louise or Mel.

Then when that's sorted she might stand a chance of being able to carry a story again.

I think a strong bond with Mel over the fact they both struggled to raise children after the death of their gangster husbands would be a good start. They actually have tonnes in common.

Big Mo needs to remain the recurring side character she was. If they give her ideas above her station and try to make out she's another legend like Pat, Peggy and Pauline or whatever then they're in trouble. She's a mediocre actress who only works as a support and in silly subplots.

She's not one for dramatic storylines and needs the comedy role

Agreed.

This is why I think Belinda and Big Mo being on the side with comedy subplots whilst Stacey, Kat, Jean and Hayley have the dramatic stories would be the best idea.

Marsh.

Aww, I think "character wasn't going anywhere" is always a piss poor excuse. These people are fictional and a good writer could work wonders with any character.

What they mean is "We don't agree with SOC's decision to recast Michelle and have no interest in developing her so we'd rather let Jenna go and do something else".

Marsh.
18-03-2018, 10:55 PM
Bit stupid though, in terms of experience and career she's one of the best actresses they have and they've done nothing with her.

She also tweeted Tamzin Outhwaite saying she missed her the other day so it was hinting she'd left.

Honestly, I don't think Eastenders has improved all that much since Yorke took over tbh. It's better, but he's hardly came in and turned the whole thing around. All he's really done is made the episodes a little bit funnier. Which is hilarious considering how dark Corrie has been recently.

Marsh.

I do kind of like the work he's doing on the cast. But the story lining is still in DESPERATE need.

But, if the rumours are true that he's working from outside of Elstree and just overseeing rather than actively working then it speaks volumes.

There's no use having a man like John Yorke who can coax back Jessie Wallace and Tamzin Outhwaite, who can draft in guests on the level of Patrick Bergin and Denise McCormack and whose making some decent decisions on axings, if you're then just going to leave them in the hands of the same shoddy writers.
