Love Network Rory. It still packs a punch now.

I saw Up in the Air over the Xmas holidays and I thought it was a brilliantly executed film, one belonging to our era and has actually a real chance of becoming a timeless classic. Reminded me of Jerry Maguire but without the syrup.

The Cove. Excellent documentary on the plight of dolphins in Japanese waters, where they are systematically killed in the most brutal of manners. The whole thing plays like a little thriller, with the activists attempting to capture live footage of the deaths, while being blocked, pursued and even imprisoned by fishermen, police and the government at every single juncture.

Swept Away (2001)

http://i26.tinypic.com/160x1xh.jpg

I was asked in The Snug for a un bias review of the film showing no bias to my favorite singer Madonna who stared in the film.

The role of Amber Leighton (Madonna) was definitely the correct role for Madonna. The spoiled demanding woman suited stereotypical portrayal of Madonna in the media. Madonna played her role perfectly and fit the role of Amber well showing that Madonna is a serious person who knows how to get what she wants.

The plot of the film was your typical love romance film where the two people fall in love but provided some funny moments particularly when Amber and Giuseppe (Adriano Giannini) are stranded in the middle of the ocean with a broken boat and no food supply.

It had love, It had tears it even had some violence. But it literally swept me away!

My fave quote from the film:

''I would rather **** a pig then sleep with you monkey boy.''

Saying it's Ritchie's best work since Lock Stock isn't exactly a great compliment though, is it? :p

I found Sherlock quite average overall. Were it not for Robert Downey’s performance it would have been instantly forgettable.

A Prophet was brilliant, went to see it today. It could have been a little shorter as my attention was drifting in the last half an hour or so, but other than that it was great. I'm normally not a fan of French cinema, but this was different. It didn't have a pretentious feel to it that I associate with French cinema, it was more gritty and real - much like a British crime film.

The Princess and the Warrior

Pretty much every negative stereotype of a bad, uber-mannered Eurotrash thriller rolled into one with a cheesy German industrial dance soundtrack thrown. No surprise this is from the people who gave us Run Lola Run. I guess I could only recommend it if you really like this sort of thing and you're nostalgic about all things 1990's (this was released in 2000, but was already pretty dated at the time).

In truth, it's rather tame now in comparison to what has followed in film and in mainstream culture over the last decade or more and what you're left with is just a well made, glossy piece of thrash. Soundtrack is killer though.

Recently watched a little known US TV movie from about 12 years ago called Dead Husbands, starring Nicolette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives) the late John Ritter. In a nutshell, it's about a group of wives who scheme to get their husbands killed one by one depending on where their husband stands on the waiting list.

It has the feel of a surreal, black comedy not dissimilar to Death Becomes Her without the fantasy elements or special effects.

The script, soundtrack and acting are high quality and have no right to be this good for low-budget fare. However, what lets Dead Husbands down a little bit is the convoluted storyline, plodding, uneven pacing and stagey, uninspired direction. Don't let that put you off though. This is really more than worth checking out if you still have a video cassette recorder and don't mind going to the trouble of getting hold of a copy,

It's was pure silliness, which I didn't really mind so much, but I'll never watch it again, you know that way? Actually I thought McAvoy was great in it: was searching my mind to think of anyone else who could have pulled it off. Anyone else would have made it totally stupid - he's a good little actor. Could you imagine Anakin Skywalker in it or something? The horror!

Synecdoche, New York. - Wont be to everyones tastes, with it's twisting of narrative and timeline, plus it's frustating and oftentimes bewildering experimentation with the medium, but in my view this hugely personal and inventive exploration of what is is to be human is an existential masterpiece.

I think I saw Wanted about a year ago. I won't say what I think of James McAvoy (not a fan), but it was one of the most grossly unpleasant and boring action movies I've seen in recent times. I wouldn't have minded the fact that the lead character was so unlikeable if he had any charisma.

The Crazies - the 1973 original. I watched it in preparation for the re-make that comes out next week.

To be honest, I was very disappointed. Easily some of Romero's worst work. It didn't carry the same chilling feel of his Zombie flicks, it wasn't at all suspenseful and at times I completely zoned out due to boredom.

If anything, I know that the Hollywood re-make is bound to be at least mildly entertaining, so I haven't been completely put off going to see it.

I quite enjoyed it. It's your typical mushy popcorn flick which keeps you entertained for the 90 or so minutes. Funny in places, very sad in others. The critics haven't been too nice about it, but they all seem to say the same thing: that they do not associate De Niro with such a film, therefore it is disappointing. I think it says more about the critic, the person who judges an entire film on the past work of its lead actor, rather than the film itself.

I just watched Across the Hall. Brittany Murphy's last film to be released while she was alive [released only one week before she died], she still has two more to be released which i can't wait for!

Across the Hall was so dark, and exciting. It's about a man named Terry who suspects his wife June [played by Brittany Murphy] is having an affair. He follows her to a hotel, where he books the rooms just 'across the hall' from her room. Yes, she is cheating.. yes, she is cheating now. Terry plans on killing both her and her lover. When he calls his best friend to tell him he is about to kill them, it turns out his friend isn't innocent either, if you get me. [i don't wanna spoil it lol]

It's not out in the UK, and probably never will be-

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Definitely one of the best looking movies of recent times and it's easy to see why the movie was commercially successful despite the large budget given the amount of shock value and eye candy. It's interesting stuff, a dark comedy featuring a strong cast and definitely worth a look for anyone who hasn't seen it already. Sadly the movie is light on character development and features a slightly hackneyed screenplay, which goes completely off the rails in the third act.

6/10
