The Dany scenes have actually been really good this season, much better than last. And Daario is just such a ridiculous character in the books, but he was alright here.
The white walker scene at the end was amazing aswell. Even when he does something right though poor Samwell still ****s up by leaving the Dragonglass dagger behind

I know I was getting sick of Theon, Bran, Arya etc. nicking all the air time with Dany reduced to supporting role, but she slayed this week
Also was excited when Conleth Hill's name was in the intro, but then he was just relegated to 'extra at wedding buffet' :bored:
She was a bit rubbish this week though, that long haired tit managed to sneak past her whole great army, 3 dragons, and Jorah and Barristan, and all the while she was just having a nice long soak in the tub practising her dothraki, he could have killed her in a flash

Tbf as amazing as it is, so far it hasn't been the 'game changing' season they promised us, its the same standard as 1 and 2 imo. Maybe that'll happen in the last couple of episodes, but Olenna has made this season so far.

It might be because I watched the first two when they had all aired, and this season as they go out but idk I've just been slightly underwhelmed so far. Saying that though this is by Game Of Thrones standards, its still freaking amazing
My main issue is the chopping and changing between characters too many times. This episode was far better as it only had 5 core groups with a lot of time dedicated to 3 of them, rather than the '2 mins each' weve had in a couple of episodes.
There still hasn't been an episode as amazing as Blackwater yet

Thats why I prefer watching it straight. The first season, I watched after it all aired, because I heard it was a good series. The second I was watching it every week, but it felt slow. So I stopped after episode 4, to wait till the end. And this year I am gonna wait as well, avoiding spoilers, as much possible. :)

I quite like Tom Wilkinson for Mace Tyrell, not that he'll probably get any longer than 5 minutes of screen time. They need to kill enough off so that it's not so crowded next season.

major spoilers
he married Talisa (Jeyne in the books) breaking his promise to the Freys. If he would have married a Frey daugther like he said he would, he would be alive and the war won instead he makes a terrible choice which leads to his death and his mothers, the loss of the war, and the end of basically any chance the Starks have of coming out of the story well
guy is one of the dumbest characters in the story.
Like Ned he is a great military strategist but an idiot when it comes to the politics of the kingdom
Locke.
02-06-2013, 12:37 PM
It is all Catelyn's fault for coming out of the Twins with such an unfair deal in the first place, they could have got across for much less than that. He is only 15 in the books aswell so that justifies a few of his bad decisions.
But yes, Robb is far too cool to marry into that horrible family.
Oh, and
I think the Starks will come out of the story well still. Sansa is in a pretty good position, if she manages to shake off Littlefinger she will be ruling the Vale and eventually have the chance of taking back the North. Especially because they'd know she is a real Stark, which would have all the Northerners ditching Bolton (who will probably be killed by Stannis soon anyway). Only problem there is that Robb pretty much disinherited her after she married Tyrion, so dunno what'd happen about that. The last book was going to originally be called A Time for Wolves aswell, so that must surely mean something good is going to happen for the Starks.
Bran is ****ed though. And probably Arya aswell.
Wonder if the the way the Characters are portrayed in the TV Show will change the way GRRM will carry on the books, he'll probably be tempted to change a few things if some characters are more popular with the audience then he expected, I mean he probably would have killed Robb off in the first book if he knew how boring he'd have been in the Show
Locke.
02-06-2013, 06:21 PM
Well GRRM does hate Stephen Dillane....
"Stephen Dillane, who plays Stannis, is another wonderful member of our cast. He has sort of a thankless role, cause Stannis is almost anti-charismatic. He’s such a hard rigid personality, blunt and brusk. Grudging with praise, quick to complain. It is hard to like him, to capture that personality, Stephen does a very good job."

For those that want to know more about the event that just happened (These will probably all be revealed early next week, they're nothing major):
It was all Tywin and Walder's idea. At some point Walder contacted Tywin, then Tywin contacted Roose (I am guessing this was the letter we saw Tywin write after he found out Robb had gone to Riverrun for his grandfathers funeral and left Roose in charge at Harrenhal). Nobody else knew, other than Tywin, Walder and the Frey men, and Roose and the Bolton men.
Edmure = Alive. Blackfish = Alive. Blackfish must have something cool to do next week, because he never attended the wedding in the books, and there was no reason to write him into it unless he has something to do.
The Starks ensured guest right when they got to the twins, which is one of the oldest and most sacred traditions in the story. So even though Tywin was behind it, and the Boltons played a massive part, the Freys are mainly the shamed house for breaking that tradition. They'll be looked down upon even more than they already were now. By everyone, including the Lannisters.
Robb and Grey Wind both have their heads chopped off their bodies, they sew Grey Wind's head to Robb's body. As we saw earlier in the season with Catelyn's dad, the Tullys have sort of a viking-like funeral where they send their body out to sea. Catelyn's body is dumped in a river.
The write up of what fully happened in the book:
By using sellswords and knights at the feast disguised as musicians, and getting Robb's men too drunk to fight, Lord Walder Frey is able to coordinate a massacre with little loss to his own men. The two twin castles and the outlying camps are signaled when the band begins playing the "The Rains of Castamere" after the start of the bedding between Edmure and Roslin. Few of the northmen have a chance to react, and most are butchered on the spot.
The Frey and Bolton men turn on the Stark soldiers. Specially-rigged feast tents collapse and are set aflame during the slaughter. In the main hall, many of Robb's personal guard are killed by Freys, including Smalljon Umber, Dacey Mormont, and Ser Wendel Manderly, as well as his mother Catelyn. Roose Bolton personally kills Robb, who was previously shot by arrows, with a thrust to the heart.[1]
Though no definitive count is known, most of the northmen are killed while House Frey loses only approximately fifty men in the camps, as well as Ser Garse Goodbrook and Ser Tytos Frey, both of whom are killed by Sandor Clegane.[2] After the battle, the Freys cut off Robb's head along with that of Grey Wind, Robb's direwolf. In a mockery of Robb's relationship with his direwolf, the Freys sew Grey Wind's head onto Robb's decapitated body. Lady Catelyn Tully has her throat slit and is later thrown naked into the river in a mockery of House Tully funeral customs.
Robb's crown is kept by Ryman Frey.

Well it is a pity that Drew completely ruined that ending but still an amazing scene and was still even a great ep before then, after all that then it's turned out that Robb really did nothing of that great worth or importance at all despite strutting around for 3 seasons pretending he's some genius of a King
I can only hope now that Edmure has survived, he is getting better and better every week

Jon Snow is the bastard son of Ned which is why he's name isn't Stark

Jon's father is Ned but his mother was not a noble or Ned's wife (Catelyn) thus not legally a Stark. That's why he is called Jon Snow. He can't inherit Winterfell even if he didn't join the Night Watch. He is technically not a Stark

He's Neds son and the other stark childrens half brother but because he was born out of wedlock, he doesn't get the name or the inheritance rights. In the North if your surname is Snow it means you're a bastard

The ratings for “The Rains of Castamere” are in and it is good news. Despite the week off, the viewer numbers grew from the last episode, coming in at 5.22 million viewers for the 9 PM airing. Another 1.08 million watched the 11 PM encore for a total of 6.3 million on the night.
It looks like HBO’s decision to delay this episode a week and skip airing a new episode on Memorial Day Weekend was a smart one. Last season’s ninth episode, the exciting “Blackwater”, registered a season low in the ratings, whereas this season’s ninth episode was the third highest-rated episode of the series.
Winter Is Coming: All I was hoping for was that we were within striking distance of True Blood‘s series high of 5.53 million viewers and we are. I suspect with the buzz from the Red Wedding, the season finale should top True Blood‘s high-water mark and become the highest rated show on HBO.

Catelyn being ressurected. Can't think of any other big scene next week, off the top of my head it will contain
Jon getting to Castle Black and warning the Night's Watch about the wildlings
Davos telling Stannis to go to the Wall
Robb and Grey Wind's head swap, Catelyn getting thrown into the lake
Arya and Hound escaping
Something with the Blackfish either escaping or being captured
Some crap filler stuff with Dany
Samwell meeting Bran
News of the red wedding getting to King's Landing
And then Cat getting brought back as Lady Stoneheart

The episode garnered critical acclaim, often being referred to as the best episode of the season. IGN's Matt Fowler gave the episode a perfect 10/10, calling it "...an exquisitely awful event that managed to out-do the unpredictable and horrifying death of Ned Stark back in Season 1."[8] Writing for The A.V. Club, both David Sims and Todd VanDerWerff gave the episode an "A" grade. Simms (writing for people who have not read the novels) expressed shock at the deaths of several main characters, writing "I don’t think I’ve really processed what I just watched".[9] VanDerWerff, who reviews the episodes for people who have read the novels, wrote "If [the reader] doesn’t terribly want to deal with the thought of the deaths of Catelyn and Robb, well, he or she can read that much more quickly. Or he or she can read that much more slowly if there’s a need to process the emotions more fully. On TV, you can’t really do that."[10] Reviewing for Forbes magazine, Erik Kain called the episode "one of the best episodes of HBO’s dark drama yet", and noted "there was a deeper sense of tragedy knowing [Robb] also lost his unborn child."[11] Sean Collins of the Rolling Stone also praised the episode, and commented on the unusual step the show took in ending the central conflict of the show.[12]

I think so. From what I remember in the books the only difference was that she was really pale, her throat was slashed, and she couldn't speak because of that. She is the same as Beric pretty much, except he can speak because he never had his throat cut. The only reason they might have to cast someone else is if Michelle Fairley didn't wanna be downgraded to a guest star, because she will only be appearing in like 1 or 2 episodes a season for a couple of years.

I really hope Michelle Fairley wants to return as Lady Stoneheart, even if it is recurring, and they should upgrade Bran to the main Stark for next season tbh, he has been too minor in this one.

I hope they do. Tbh even though Lady Stoneheart doesn't have a huge storyline, they could go do what they did with Theon and Olenna, give her extra scenes and just keep Michelle Fairley part of the main cast.
Cersei needs her face ripped off by a direwolf, that would be the only fitting death for her. Not some poxy poison in her wine, which will probably happen.

Is it worth continuing with this show? I'm disillusioned with this weeks episode. I was hardly getting it to begin with but now I'm close to ditching it. The show is awesome but the plotting seems clunky to say the least eg getting rid of so many of the Starks in one fail swoop. I've not read the books so please forgive my ignorance but I don't get why certain characters spend entire seasons doing nothing eg on the run, but from who exactly? but when they're culling characters so many of the more visible characters go all at the same time. Is this all leading to something ?
Niamh.
05-06-2013, 12:34 PM
Well, when bigger characters like Robb go, it leaves space for other characters who haven't done much to come forward, also there's alot more characters to come as well. It's hard for me to look at the TV Series and judge it as a stand alone thing because of reading the books, I know Brans section seemed more interesting in print. I never got bored reading the book though and can't wait for the next installment
GiRTh
05-06-2013, 12:40 PM
But they have spent almost three seasons going down a certain path, building up the conflict between the The Starks and Lannisters then get rid of almost all of the Starks in one episode. My question is, what was the point of the last two seasons if Robb Cat and Robs wife end up doing nothing for the overall plotting. I admit that in literature you have to move the character s around inorder to line them up for the denouement but this doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Kaleesi is another example. Two and a half seasons of her and her baby dragons. Where is this leading? I'm gonna get bored if there are these mass slaughters every now and again for no reason.
Suppose it's a bit weird really because most of the show looked like it was centred mainly around, and building up to, the Lannister-Stark conflict, I know there's all the other stories as well but they've all progressed/built up quite slowly so far. That's what's so good about it really though, that it isn't just following a predictable path, Robb didn't even get a heroic death in battle or anything he just got completely screwed over by someone he thought was an ally on what was supposed to be a day of celebration and optimism
Niamh.
05-06-2013, 12:49 PM
The bit about Robbs wife never happened in the book so they got rid of 2 Starks really  There are still plenty more Starks around. Personally I like how GRRM kind of makes you think that someone is a main character, like Ned from season 1 and then kills them, it seems shocking and a bad move at the time but the fallout from Neds death is what pushed the storyline ahead and actually made Robb a player in the first place. For me that's part of the fun, guessing which family will be victorious and also which member of each family.
There's only one more episode left this season anyway, you should atleast watch that one before you decide to stop
Roy Mars III
05-06-2013, 12:49 PM
The show isn't about just any specific family, per say. It is about the 'game of thrones' people trying to get control of Westroes.
People mistakenly think the Starks are somehow the heroes or protagonists of the story, but they're really not. It's a story about the the various families all fighting each other for power. There are other elements that run throughout the series, but that is the main plot point esp. in the beginning
GiRTh
05-06-2013, 12:59 PM
The first six episodes of seasons one were painfully slow episodes building up the characterisation of the Stark and Lannisters and the conflict between the two families. Yes, there are other plotlines but the emphasis was on the one particular conflict. It was quite meticulous and painstaking and now we see it was a bit pointless. Thats my point. I feel like GRRM is wasting people time. I feel like he does things simply to shock the audience yet he has painfully slow plotlines that could be developed but are still slow - Kaleesi. I think the show is a bit imbalanced. I think its one of the reasons why I've struggled with it TBH. There are very important things that are only mentioned and never developed. I think its good that the producers assume a bit of knowledge in the viewers but I think there needs to be a more equal spread of air time for each plotline. ATM it seems irrelevant plotlines are dominating the episodes.
I blame Locke having Robb in his sig and avatar the last two years for making everyone think he must be the great hero of the show, and not just someone who achieves nothing, makes loads of mistakes, and then walks himself and his whole family into a pathetic death at the hands of some creepy old man

The Stark and Lanniester conflict is basically over now with the Lannisters winning easily (Robb and Cat's death was the final act I guess).
I agree with Dany's storyline moving slowly, and I think that's one of the main problems with GRRM's series. He moves the Dany storylines along too fast and has to stall now while the other storylines catch up to her's.
The story isn't suppose to be about any certain family or person though. The Starks were just what GRRM used to introduce people into the politics and aspects of the world

As someone who, at the time, only really liked the Starks when I read it, and felt like giving up on the books, yes, continue.
Also, the Lannister-Stark conflict had a massive point. Robb conquered the Westerlands (where the Lannisters are from) and won 100% of his battles, pretty much showing that the Lannisters aren't untouchable. Not everybody is scared of them anymore like they were at the beginning. You've still got Arya, Sansa, Stannis, the Tyrells, and Daenerys that will be rivals to the Lannisters.

There is absolutely no chance that Daenerys will win. That is way too obvious for this story. She might play an important part in the battle vs the White Walkers but there is more chance of Theon winning the throne than there is of Daenerys

yea, there is 0 chance that Martin will end the story with Dany on the winning. She is okay in the show, but most of the book fans hate her in the books and it is way too cliche to have her win.

There is absolutely no chance that Daenerys will win. That is way too obvious for this story. She might play an important part in the battle vs the White Walkers but there is more chance of Theon winning the throne than there is of Daenerys

A massive slut??? Because she slept with 2 people..............ever.........one of whom was her husband, double standards :nono:

Most of the book fans hated Jamie as well and now everyone loves him, things can change very quickly, also
Her story is just annoying and boring atm, it'll get better once she gets the hell out of Meereen for good

3 people actually :idc: Drogo, Daario, Hizdahr. And she cares more about ****ing Daario than she does about anything else. Plus she turns down Quentyn's offer (which would have probably won her the Throne) just because he isn't attractive. Plus no Targaryen should ever be on the Throne again, they are all nuts.
Locke.

This quote pretty much sums up Dany's chances:
“I killed Ned because everybody thinks he’s the hero and that, sure, he’s going to get into trouble, but then he’ll somehow get out of it,” said Martin.
“The next predictable thing is to think his eldest son is going to rise up and avenge his father. And everybody is going to expect that. So immediately [killing Robb] became the next thing I had to do.”
Niamh.
05-06-2013, 02:10 PM
oh yeah, I forgot about Hizdahr, he was also her husband though. She turned down Quentin but she'll probably end up with Aegon Targaryen anyway cos they marry their family members

getting into speculation after Dance of Dragons I think:
huge spoilers for the series
Jon Snow will turn out to be the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark, thus Dany's brother. Rhaegar did not kill Lyanna and they had a romantic relationship. Ned knew Jon was Lyanna's son and lied and said it was his. Jon and Dany will team up in the end

it is based on a fantasy series which are known for being very long and drawn out
at least it's not Wheel of Time where it took 15 1000 page books to wrap up the story
Niamh.
05-06-2013, 02:21 PM
I've heard that theory before Roy and it seems pretty plausible but
I wonder what will happen with Jon though, he seemed pretty dead at the end of the last book. I assume Melisandre will bring him back but I hate when they do that, the characters are always changed for the worse afterwards
Locke.
05-06-2013, 02:22 PM
Big spoilers
I think having Melisandre interact with Thoros and Beric in the show, and having Thoros show her what he done with Beric and explain it, is a big hint of what will happen with Jon in the next book.

I don't think I have the patience for this show. They'll spend the next few seasons focussing on characters who will be dead in a few episodes time and fleetingly mentioning characters who are extremely important.

I'll keep watching, of course, but its getting a bit of a thumbs down at the moment. Its too sprawling and lacks focus. Its like a fantasy daytime adult soap opera. Its as crazy as the likes of Days of our lives and All my children with just as many crazy deaths but with lots more sex.

Yeah without her dragons she only has an army and two cities that are completely under her control.
she gained both of those because they were scared of the dragons... she herself is whiney. not really sure what's hard to understand about that.
she doesn't have the confidence or interesting traits that, say, arya, cersei, brienne, olenna or catelyn do. and for that reason she is bottom bitch.

About 'Lady Stoneheart' (big spoilers, again)
So Catelyn is dead, but in the books, she is not actually gone! She becomes Lady Stoneheart! Who has deep gashes in her face from scratching herself, can’t speak because her throat was cut so deeply, and was in the river for a few days before being brought back to life. She marauds around killing Freys, plus anyone who might have done the Starks wrong, and appears occasionally going forward. Have you talked to Dan and David about Season 4?
MF: Well, you’ll just have to keep watching. You’ll have to keep wattttttcccchhhhin’.
The way Lady Stoneheart, zombie Catelyn, is described — she’s completely insane, basically.
MF: I’m completely insane, so it mightn’t be too much of an acting stretch!
Were that to happen in the show’s future, would that be fun?
MF: No one knows, no one knows. Sorry, Kate!

Guys, thank you so much for keeping spoilers under the appropriate wraps. Jobs well done. Have a friend whose son lets her read only the parts up until is absolutely necessary, and then showtime. Have not been spoiled once. This last penultimate episode, for me, was amazing. Wasn't expecting it, not one ounce...well, until those goddamned doors closed, that is. <goes on to weeping again>

I don't know why you haven't realised the queen of the andals and the first men, khaleesi of the great grass sea, breaker of chains and mother of dragons is the one true hero in this story, she's the only one doing any good, who else is freeing slaves left right and centre :worship: :worship:

She is doing all this in the middle of nowhere, I do not care until she gets to Westeros.
And even then, I don't want a Targaryen to win the Throne after good old Ned and Robert fought so hard to get them off it. We will see who her eventual husband and King would be though.

USURPERS!!
Dany - lets just about anyone apart from her do the fighting in every single battle she has been in
Stannis - Losses half his fleet and then rides into the heart of Kings Landing on the front of a flimsy boat and then proceeds to make it to the walls of the city and cut someone's scalp clean off and then wants to continue to fight even though Tywin has arrived and his army are outnumbered 10-1
but don't worry Smithy i won't care about any of that as long as Dany submits her Dragons to the One True King and hands her Dragons over and becomes his right hand woman

If Michelle Fairley doesn't get an Emmy nomination (at the very least) there is something seriously wrong. My heart broke for her at the end, she was incredible, even her facial expressions spoke volumes
Shame shes been on the back burner for most of the season though (I mean even Hodor gets more screen time ffs), since that monologue she gave a few weeks ago about her treatment of Jon Snow was also award worthy. Shes by far the most underused and underrated character. Well, before this week. Her career better skyrocket now though...
