Reid and Delph focus of Bluebirds boss Jones’ spying mission

Jan 4 2010 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo

DAVE Jones went on a Villa Park spying mission after Cardiff City’s FA Cup tie at Bristol City was postponed.

The Bluebirds manager had talks with chairman Peter Ridsdale about transfer targets before setting off to watch Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 in the third round.

The Echo understands that Blackburn’s Steven Reid and Villa youngster Fabian Delph are both on Jones’ radar as possible loan signings.

Reid, the Republic of Ireland international, underlined his progress after long-term injury problems and proved his fitness with a 90-minute display.

Former Leeds ace Delph also shone in a rare first-team outing before going off ill at half-time, to be replaced by Steve Sidwell.

Rovers were down to 10 players when they had El Hadji Diouf sent off during the first half and Reid’s fitness was tested to the full.

Ridsdale was also due to take in an FA Cup match and left Ashton Gate with the intention of going to the Wigan-Hull tie, where Jason Koumas was among the players involved.

Jones has already made a couple of enquiries about Koumas, but the former Welsh international is not keen to drop down to the Championship from the Premier League.

Reid would be an ideal signing for City if the Bluebirds can persuade Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce to loan him out.

The 28-year-old joined Queens Park Rangers for a month, returning during December having made only two appearances for the London club.

Jones needs midfield players who can step in and do a job immediately and Reid certainly went a long way towards proving that by completing the 90 minutes at Villa.

He has only played in cup-ties for Blackburn this season and Allardyce might welcome the chance to send him out to build up match fitness.

Delph went off feeling unwell, but that is not a long-term issue and the key for Jones with the Yorkshireman is whether Martin O’Neill would allow him out on loan.

Villa have a two-legged Carling Cup semi-final this month, again against Blackburn, and O’Neill may want the youngster involved.

“The manager was out watching players on Saturday and we fully intend to strengthen the playing squad as soon as possible,” promised club chairman Ridsdale.

“Dave has given me a list of players who would fit the bill and we are working on that.”

More than 10,000 Bluebirds fans have snapped up season tickets for 2010-11 to hand Jones a £3m January war chest. “The chairman has promised that all the money that comes in will go to bringing in players,” Jones said last week.

“Up to £3m has been mentioned and if that’s the case we could do a lot of damage with that.

“For the first time since I have been here we are able to push on during the January transfer window.”

Cardiff hope to bring in at least one player, possibly two, in time for Saturday’s Championship home game with Blackpool.

With Stephen McPhail (thigh) and Gavin Rae (broken fingers) now ruled out by injury and Riccy Scimeca retired, the Bluebirds have big issues through central midfield.

Joe Ledley is playing on despite a problem with his hips and will have benefited from the rest provided by the postponement of the FA Cup tie at Ashton Gate.

The real loser from that postponement was teenage midfielder Aaron Wildig, who looked set for a first full-team debut.

Now, though, City will hopefully have new players available for Saturday.

If they are out of the Premier League on loan then it is probable they won’t be able to play in the rescheduled FA Cup tie tomorrow week – and that could hand Wildig his chance after all.

Geremi has moved to Ankaragücü

Geremi has moved to Ankaragücü

Newcastle released a statement saying that he has not left the club to join them. Either illegal signing or false rumours in Turkey.

Newcastle United have issued a statement regarding the widely reported transfer of Geremi to Turkish side Ankaragucu, with the North East club insisting talk of such a deal is extremely premature.

The Cameroon international was presented to Turkish media on Monday afternoon as Ankaragucu's latest signing and was afforded a rapturous reception by the club's supporters.

Newcastle were under the impression Geremi was to link-up with his national side for the African Cup of Nations in Angola, but it appears he took a detour to Turkey.

In a bid to clarify where they stand on any potential transfer of the midfielder an official Newcastle club statement read: "Further to reports in various sections of the media today regarding the transfer of Geremi to Turkish side Ankaragucu, Newcastle United wishes to make it clear that whilst there are a number of clubs interested in possibly acquiring his services, any talk of him leaving St James' Park at this moment is extremely premature.

"Geremi remains a Newcastle United player and has today linked up with Cameroon for the African Cup of Nations."

Former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Middlesbrough player Geremi arrived at St James' during the summer of 2007 when then manager Sam Allardyce recruited him for his experience.

He was initially handed the captain's armband, but has struggled to command a regular place in the team, particularly since the departure of the man who signed him.

But he is one of the club's remaining high earners and as current boss Chris Hughton attempts to close in on his January targets - the names of Leeds' FA Cup hero Jermaine Beckford and Sheffield United defender Matt Kilgall

Arsenal youngster Fran Merida is thought to have snubbed a new deal with the Gunners in favour of signing for Atletico Madrid.

Reports from Spain on Wednesday indicate that the 19-year-old has decided to sign a five-year deal with the La Liga side rather than stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard had initially agreed a new five-year contract with Arsenal towards the end of last year but never put pen-to-paper on the deal and will now join up with Atletico in the summer, the club he has supported all his life.

Reports today suggest that two of the Premier League big guns will move for 23-year-old Porto striker Hulk. The Brazilian forward has a rumoured release clause of nearly €100 million but a more realistic sum of £15-20 million would surely tempt Porto to sell.

I hope not hes not very good.

Injured striker Nicklas Bendtner targets Bolton match to make Arsenal return

Injured striker Nicklas Bendtner hopes to make his long-awaited return to first-team action when Arsenal travel to Bolton in the Barclays Premier League on January 17.

The Denmark international has been out of action for over two months, after picking up a recurrence of a groin injury during the Gunners 3-0 win over north-London rivals Tottenham at the Emirates in October.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had hoped to have Bendtner available for action at the start of the new year, but the hitman's return has been blighted by a number of problems.

The 17-year-old has impressed this season in the Championship, making 14 appearances for the Welsh club and scoring one goal as they push for promotion.

Matthews' form has now attracted the attention of Arsenal who are keen to sign yet another Cardiff youngster after capturing former Bluebird Aaron Ramsey 18 months ago.

Agent confirms Atletico Madrid's Maxi Rodriguez is in talks with Liverpool

Atletico Madrid’s Maxi Rodriguez is currently discussing a permanent transfer to Liverpool, his agent has confirmed.

Liverpool have been widely tipped to swoop for the winger, with Goal.com UK exclusively revealing that sources close to the Anfield club had suggested the transfer was imminent.

The Argentine's agent, Jose Segui, has now confirmed talks between the two clubs are underway, but insisted nothing concrete has been agreed.

"We are working. It's true we have spoken [with Liverpool], but there is nothing definitive," Segui told calciomercato.it.

"I don't know when the negotiation could be closed. It's up to the two clubs and to their decision.

"Anyway it would be a permanent transfer."

Cardiff City's teenage defender Adam Matthews says he would have to consider a move to a big Premier League club should one come in for him.

Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale has confirmed that Manchester United and Arsenal have been looking at the highly rated 17-year-old.

Wales full-back Matthews told BBC Sport Wales: "If that ever came about I'd have to think about it.

"But I'm just happy to be playing for Cardiff at the moment."

A move to a major Premier League club would mean Matthews following in the footsteps of another recent Bluebirds academy player, Aaron Ramsey.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has recently praised Ramsey for exceeding expectations following his move to the Gunners in June 2008 that left other suitors, including Manchester United, frustrated.

Matthews has since attracted the attention of the Premier League rivals and that has come as no surprise to Cardiff boss Dave Jones.

"I don't think he's come from nowhere," said Jones. "He's been on our radar and on other football clubs' radar for a long, long time, since the age of 14.

"He's just another one of the academy players that we think highly of and we try and do the right thing for them.

"We know he's got a bright future. There are certain parts of his game he needs to improve on - as all youngsters do."

For the time being Matthews is happy to continue progressing with the Bluebirds and says the speculation linking him with a move is not a distraction.

He also believes he can reach the top flight with the Bluebirds, who are lying fourth in the Championship.

"I don't think the speculation is distracting," he said. "I'm quite a level-headed boy and obviously I'm very happy to get noticed.

"But I'm happy to be with Cardiff and play the rest of the season and I've heard nothing. It's just rumours.

"My ambitions are just to play as much as I can and play well and hopefully the team can get promotion to the Premier League.

"I think we've got as good a chance as any. We've got a good squad here and if we keep the key players fit, I think we can make a good push for it and I think we can do it.

"Every player wants to play against the best players in the country so if that ever happens, I think that's a good motivation for us to get promotion."

Matthews made his senior Cardiff debut in the 1-1 draw at Blackpool in August and has gone on to make 17 league appearances, including 14 starts.

The Swansea-born youngster was given his chance following injuries in the Bluebirds defence and has earned praise for his displays.

Matthews was called into the Wales senior squad for the 3-0 friendly win over Scotland, but did not feature.

But he did win his first Under-21 cap four days later in the 1-0 defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Manchester City have completed the signing of Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira on loan.

The former Arsenal enforcer has moved to Eastlands on an initial six-month deal, with an option of a further 12 months to follow.

Vieira, 33, becomes Roberto Mancini's first signing since taking the manager's job at City, having worked with him at Inter, and the Frenchman moves after passing a medical at the club on Thursday afternoon.

Mancini admitted he was delighted to secure the services of the experienced midfielder, who still harbours hope of playing in the summer's World Cup, and thinks he will be an important signing for the club.

"Patrick is a world class midfielder with a winner's mentality and will fit into this group very well," he told the club's official website.

"He knows me and my staff well, and importantly he also knows what the Premier League is all about.

"He will not need much time to settle in.

"Patrick is one of the great players of this era with almost every honour in the game against his name.

"I am sure City fans will welcome him warmly and appreciate the contribution he will make."

Vieira made 279 appearances during a nine-year stint with Arsenal, winning the Premier League three times.

So Viera has gone to Man City now.

A bus carrying Togo's national football team to the Africa Cup of Nations has been hit by machine-gun fire, injuring two players, reports say.
The reported incident occurred as the bus was en route to Angola from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Africa Cup of Nations is due to start in Angola on Sunday.
Togo's first game is to be played on Monday in the oil-rich northern territory of Cabinda, where rebels have been fighting for independence.
The identities of the wounded players are not known. There are unconfirmed reports of serious injuries.
The Togolese team includes Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Driver Dead In Togo Football Team Attack
A Togolese official says a bus driver has been killed and four people injured after the coach carrying the national football team was attacked with machine guns in Angola.Unknown assailants reportedly opened fire on the coach carrying the team as they prepare for the African Cup of Nations.

"The Angolan driver was killed on the spot," said a Togolese sports ministry spokesman, adding that the attack took place in the restive Angolan region of Cabinda, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said the wounded included two squad members and two medics.

Speaking of the Championship, Forest beat West Brom 3-1 last night in a huge 2nd v 3rd clash to go 2nd. Forest are now 5 points behind leaders Newcastle who don't play this weekend due to their match at Reading being postponed.

Just got done watching 2 African cup games. Cant believe how awful Cote divoire and Algeria were. The 2 world cup team. Ive got the feeling they arent giving it their all. That would be a shame.

And what a cracker the opening game was. Mali down 4 after 76 minutes, thy scor 2 goals in et to tie it.

Malawi Algeria 3-0
Cote DIvoire Burkina Faso 0-0

they can't keep on showing the top teams, they need to show relegation scraps too. hence derby and scunthorpe. plus it was a big win.

Wow my bet actually fell apart in the space of 2 seconds. Coventry, Cardiff and Derby to win

2137: GOALFLASH Coventry 1-1 Portsmouth (Wright own goal)

2137: GOALFLASH Bristol City 1-1 Cardiff (Williams)

And Derby are still drawing. Useless!
