Issued at: 15 February 2020 06:00
TODAY - Saturday 15th February

Storm Dennis brings very wet and windy weather today with some severe gusts. Outbreaks of heavy rain for much of the day with gale force southerly winds. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-28

"A band of rain and hill snow will move northeastwards this afternoon, turning heavier for a time. This is likely to bring snow to lower levels before dying out this evening. 1 to 3 cm of snow is likely to accumulate on roads above 200 metres elevation and 5 to 8 cm on roads above about 350 metres. There may be a temporary slushy cover for a short time at lower levels."

Are you talking about the app on your phone, did you just look at one point to the icons and not the text forecast?

These little icons can change by the hour, every hour. Your test forecast said

Headline: Rain and hill snow on Friday.

Today:

A cloudy day, and though starting mainly dry, outbreaks of rain, with some hill snow, will develop during the morning. A few heavy bursts with the chance of snow to lower levels to the north of Glasgow. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

true

weather wise it has been weird so far too the new decade

January, February lots of rain

March, April very dry, Sunny (farmers already complaining here)

May hmmm few cooler nights than usual (few places up north friesland, groningen provinces it was freezing even -2 )

as for rain, at least it had rained quite a lot here last week, soil isn't that dry for now compared to last 2 months

complaints about the drought now here by farmers, understandable of course since their vegetables don't have roots deep down in the ground, what other trees, plants do have for comparison

also last year was horrible either but then came september until january this year with quite good bit of rain and no real winter

as for degrees now, i'm not complaining myself, i like it between 22 and 25

also for last few year comparisons, 2018 was worse than 2019 (because we last year had that lot of rain in autumn and a longer autumn until spring basically)

Laura rapidly intensifies, expected to be ‘catastrophic’ Category 4 as it zeroes in on Texas, Louisiana

Hurricane Laura is rapidly strengthening and is poised to strike the upper Texas coast and western Louisiana with a ferocity that has not been seen in this region in more than a decade.

The storm, which leaped from a Category 1 to Category 3 overnight Tuesday, is forecast to make landfall as a “catastrophic” Category 4 between Houston and Lake Charles, La., on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Hurricane and storm surge warnings cover much of this zone.

Beaumont and Port Arthur, Tex., which were severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, may be near the point of landfall, where officials have ordered evacuations.

Depending on the timing of the storm, Laura may strike near high tide, inundating areas of western Louisiana and parts of Texas as far as 30 miles inland under between 10 to 15 feet of water.

A very wet day in HOlland where it rained all day would be 25mm. The record daily rate is 208mm.

630mm

Eta hit Cuba even as searchers in Guatemala were still digging for people believed buried by a massive, rain-fueled landslide. Authorities on Sunday raised the known death toll there to 27 from 15 and said more than 100 were missing in Guatemala, many of them in the landslide in San Cristobal Verapaz.

Some 60,000 people had been evacuated in Guatemala.

At least 20 people also were reported dead in southern Mexico and local officials in Honduras reported 21, though the national disaster agency had confirmed only eight.

Today is the first day of Winter

UK long range weather forecast

Tuesday 15 Dec - Tuesday 29 Dec

Remaining changeable during this period with outbreaks of rain and showers at times, particularly in the east and the south. Snow remains most likely over the hills but could still fall to lower levels at times. It is likely that drier and settled conditions will continue in the northwest, with a possibility of these more settled conditions developing more widely towards the end of this period. This would bring more widespread overnight frosts along with some fog patches. Temperatures will overall likely be near, or a little below average, although some milder interludes are possible.

Latest MetO forecast follows the model trend of past few days:

Quote

"...[a ridge of high pressure is expected to build to the west of the UK with many southern and western parts becoming predominantly dry and settled. The greatest chance of showers is in the north and perhaps in the east. There is a potential for strong winds in the far south at first; at other times any strong winds are likely to be confined to the north and perhaps the east. Prevalence of overnight fog and frost is likely increasing, with fog potentially slow to clear during the daytime. Temperatures either close to or slightly below normal

[Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle,
said: “Conditions will turn very unsettled after Christmas day,
with a large area of low pressure sweeping across the
UK from Boxing Day. Very strong winds will impact much of England and Wales,
with particularly strong gusts on south west facing coasts.

“Heavy rain will also move in from the north, with heavy downpours
through the afternoon in Scotland and Northern Ireland
moving south across England and Wales overnight.
This will be a notable change from the calmer
conditions over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so take extra care and stay up to date

yes now AMber

people need to act now in these areas

Very strong southwesterly winds are expected for parts of south and southeast England and south Wales on Sunday morning. Inland gusts of 50-60 mph are likely with a few spots likely to see 60-70 mph for a time. Hills and particularly coasts exposed to the southwesterly winds will see a few gusts of 70-80 mph. In addition to the strong winds, a period of heavy, squally rain is expected and may prove an additional hazard.

A band of sleet and snow will arrive across northwest Scotland on Wednesday
afternoon and move southeastwards across most parts of Scotland
overnight, clearing southwards on Thursday morning. 1-2 cm snow is likely
to settle at low levels quite widely with 3-6 cm above 200 metres and up to
10 cm above 300 metres. Rain is more likely around some coasts, and snow
may also turn to rain at low levels inland before clearing to leave a risk of ice
on untreated surfaces on Thursday morning. Following the clearance of the
rain, sleet and snow on Thursday morning, much of inland Scotland will be
dry for most of the day. However, snow showers will then follow into
northern Scotland on Thursday, especially during the afternoon and evening.
A further 2-5 cm is likely at low levels with around 10 cm accumulating
above 200 metres. This warning will likely be updated on Thursday.

snow warning for NE Scotland wed and thurs from Fraserburgh across to Nairn and then down to Blairgowrie and over to Dundee

quite a bit of snow involved

A band of rain associated with Storm Christoph will push in from the northeast, turning readily to snow. Snow accumulations of 10-15 cm are possible at low levels, with 30-40 cm possible over the eastern Grampians. Strong winds will develop during the early hours of Thursday morning, increasing to gale force at times which may cause blizzards over hills and mountains. Wet snow at low levels may lead to icing on infrastructure, such as power lines. Cold temperatures to follow the snow, bringing a widespread ice potential over the area.

No.....luckily my garden slopes which is why I get a lot of standing water at the bottom but there would have to be a serious amount of water to reach the house. The dorma in my lost is leaking though...so that's fun

the actual band/front will clear east at about 2-3 am but tehre will be showers and much colder air tucking in from the North

but yes about 2-3am

by then your temp will have gone down 8 degrees

An area of snow will move across Wales and central & southern England on Sunday,
becoming slow moving for a time across the Midlands. This will bring 1-3 cm of snow
across much of the warning area, though not all sites will see lying snow, with areas above
100 m likely to be worst affected. Here areas of 5-10 cm of snow are possible, particularly
for parts of Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire.
