[Storm Debi:
Weather warnings as storm disrupts power, travel

Warnings for wind and rain are in force
in Northern Ireland, Wales, north-west England
and north-east Scotland as Storm Debi
sweeps across the UK.
The Met office alerts comes as Debi,
the fourth named storm of the season,
caused power cuts and travel disruption
in some places.

Gusts could reach up to 80mph (130 km/h) in
exposed coastal areas and
up to 65mph inland.
There is also a possible danger to life from
flying debris and large waves.
The rain and winds are expected to gradually
ease off in the afternoon.

In Northern Ireland, Storm Debi caused road
closures and some disruption to the
public transport network.
NIE Networks said about 3,000 customers
were without power, mainly around Craigavon,
Newry and Downpatrick.]

[Parts of the UK are bracing for snow and wintry showers
this week as the cold spell continues.
Temperatures dropped below freezing for much
of the country over the weekend,
with lows of -8C (17.6F) forecast for Tuesday.

The coldest recorded temperature so far this
autumn was -7.7C in Shap, Cumbria,
on Saturday morning.

BBC Weather says snowfalls are possible
but there is "a lot more uncertainty
than normal" in forecasts.

Tuesday night will bring frost to much of the country,
with temperatures of around -2C to -5C,
and possibly as low as -8C,
across parts of the north of
England and rural Scotland,
the Met Office said.

Higher ground in Scotland and
northern England
saw snowfall last week,
which is typical for late November.]

https://nltimes.nl/2024/01/02/first-storm-year-predicted-hit-netherlands-tonight-gusts-110-kmh

The first storm of the year is expected to strike the Netherlands on Tuesday night with wind speeds reaching 110 kilometers per hour. Storm Henk was expected to first pummel most of England and Wales with strong wind and rainfall late on Tuesday afternoon, before crossing the North Sea and hitting the Netherlands.

"Tonight and during the overnight into Wednesday, there will be heavy wind gusts of 80-90 km/h in the southeast and 100-110 km/h in the northwest and northern coastal areas," said Dutch meteorological service KNMI. The organization issued a Code Yellow Weather Warning for the gusty weather in effect until 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

"The gusts of wind will come from a south-westerly direction," the KNMI stated. "Traffic and outdoor activities may be affected by this. The wind gusts will decrease again on Wednesday morning."

The weather alert takes effect from 8 p.m. in Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Flevoland and Friesland. The strongest winds can reach the Wadden Islands, the IJsselmeer region, Groningen, Drenthe and Gelderland by 10 p.m.

"You may encounter very strong gusts of wind along the way. Therefore, be extra alert when you go out and adapt your driving style to the circumstances," said Dutch infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat.

Road users were advised to maintain additional distance between vehicles, and to watch out for debris blowing onto the road. Likewise, drivers avoiding debris can drive in an undpredictable manner. "Vehicles with (empty) trailers, trucks without loads, caravans and motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to strong winds. It may be wise to postpone the trip."

There were no major delays reported at Schiphol Airport, but airlines there cancelled 32 flights over the course of Tuesday's operations schedule. The cancellations were split evenly between departures and arrivals.

Some delays were expected on Tuesday morning due to air traffic control capacity, according to European air traffic control center Eurocontrol.

The Met Office has extended its amber wind alerts to cover most of the UK in a rare move ahead of Storm Isha tonight - warning of potential "danger to life" in some areas.

Storm Isha, the ninth since September, is expected to bring winds of up to 80mph, potentially causing power cuts and increased congestion as roads and bridges are likely to be shut, while rail and bus services could face delays and cancellations.

Two 12-hour amber wind warnings will be in place from 6pm on Sunday until Monday morning. One stretches across central, eastern and western England and all of Wales, only missing London and parts of the South East.

The other covers all of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland.

TRAINS across Scotland will see a “controlled shutdown of services” ahead of Storm Jocelyn hitting the country.

The second named storm this week, Jocelyn will follow in the wake of Storm Isha and hit Scotland on Tuesday evening.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the whole of the country from 4pm on Tuesday until 1pm on Wednesday, with a second in place for rain in the west of Scotland from 7am until 6pm on Tuesday.

A more severe amber alert – which comes with warnings of power cuts, damage to buildings, travel disruption and even “injuries and danger to life” – has been issued for much of the coast, as well as most of the Scottish islands.

Met Office issues weather warning as 'significant snowfall' to sweep UK…

Parts of the UK will be hit with snow in the coming days and the whole country will experience "significant snowfall" from the weekend, forecasters say.

The Met Office has issued two yellow warnings for snow covering Wales, the Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East, North West and the east of England, for Thursday and Friday.

A separate warning for ice is in place for Tuesday in Scotland, where temperatures could drop as low as -10C in rural areas on Wednesday evening.

A yellow weather warning means there is a small chance of power cuts, travel delays and rural communities being cut off by the snow.

However, this week's snow is expected to be only the beginning of the deluge, with more sweeping across the entire country from the weekend onwards.

In its long range forecast for Friday 9 February to Sunday 18 February, the Met Office said: "Cold air already established across the northern UK is likely to extend to all parts through next weekend.

Last Thursday - April 18th - had to be the coldest April day I'd ever experienced in my life.

It was 2c but felt like -5c. So cold I had the heating on and wore a coat in the house. Soooooooooooooo cold.

I think we're gonna have another shi**y summer this year. Like the previous three 'summers'.

Never mind the hottest year on record rubbish we hear. It's COLD.

The last week or so hasn't been too bad where I live.

But it's still not like the early May days from my childhood.

I always remember April and May nicely WARM, shirt and sleaves weather.

But I'm still wearing a coat when I go out. :(

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out in the south of this
area late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north
whilst growing into larger areas of rain before clearing the area. Some intense
downpours are possible in a few places, giving up to 30 mm in less than hour
and perhaps 40-50 mm over 2 to 3 hours leading to surface water flooding.
Hail, frequent lightning strikes and strong wind gusts will be additional localised
hazards.

certain plants of ours can take much water quite well, others not so much especially those with flowers :(

apparently some belgian meteorologists have said, due to this much rainfall from basically the winter to now, chances of long heatwaves are smaller than recent few years back

that is because the ground first has to dry up enough for the earth to warm up

idk what summer we're going to get this year

should be mostly sunny with a fresh breeze and 17 C but there are isolated sharp showers around - if you get one it wont last too long

All that means is that on each day somewhere in the UK will get say a light shower - like the far North of Scotland

It does not mean it will rain on your area for 50 days!

300+ mph winds measured inside the Greenfield, IA tornado!

Breaking news! A 300+ mph wind gust was measured above 160 feet above
ground-level by mobile radar inside this #tornado near Greenfield, Iowa,
making it one of the most powerful tornadoes documented in History.
Incredibly, this rare drone footage was captured just prior to this historic wind
measurement! The multiple vortex nature of this compact tornado vortex is a
characteristic of the more powerful tornadoes of the Great Plains!

"It's astonishing to see a forecast for a major (Category 3+) hurricane in June anywhere in
the Atlantic, let alone this far east in the deep tropics," Michael Lowry, a hurricane expert
said on social media.

"Only 5 major (Category 3+) hurricanes have been recorded in the Atlantic before the first
week of July. Beryl would be the sixth and earliest this far east in the tropical Atlantic."
