I've loved this proper winter weather, no rain and no wind...any chance of a white Christmas in Landan LT?
there is always a chance but its very unlikely, the 2 week forecast which is about as far as one can go in reality only hits the 19th at the moment.

Nope, nothing in the next two weeks hence but from the 20th it looks like high pressure will again be in charge so that will mean frosts and lower temps so that is good for the xmas week in terms of travel.
Thanks LT x
A frosty Christmas would be lovely. I can't bear it when it's mild on Christmas Day.

The latest thinking from the very good Liam Dutton about snow for England and Wales:
Whilst most places will probably see rain, there is a chance that as it brushes against the cold Arctic air coming down from the north, it could turn to snow in places.
What is the chance of snow?
At the moment, the chance of snow is considered to be very low – probably around 30 per cent – which means rain is much more likely than snow for most. Also, the greatest chance of snow will be over the hills, mountains and moors of Wales and southern England – especially as the rain starts to clear during Thursday afternoon and evening, as the colder air digs in and temperatures fall away into the night.
Even if rain does turn to snow, it will have difficulty settling because the ground will still be wet from the rain that preceded it and probably not quite cold enough to stop the snow from melting. However, if it does snow, it is likely to be wet snow, with big, fluffy white snowflakes that can reduce visibility significantly and make for tricky travelling conditions.

No - weather can be accurately predicted for 5 days, a rough but good estimate for 2 weeks and trends for a month ahead but no more than that.
below is the furthest the met office provide for non paying customers (ie the general public) and its all hedged bets and general stuff
----
UK Outlook for Saturday 4 Feb 2017 to Saturday 18 Feb 2017:
Into the start of February, confidence in the forecast reduces, however the most likely scenario is for a continuation of the unsettled weather with wet and windy spells interspersed with brighter and showery interludes. This will bring gales at times, especially in the north-west and temperatures will be close to or slightly above normal for the time of year. From the second week of February there is an increased likelihood for high pressure to return, bringing more settled weather with lighter winds and a return of overnight frost and fog. As a result, temperatures may become colder at times although the chance of very cold weather developing is considered to be low.
Thank you for replying.

Something else that irritates me about TV weather forecasts is how they don't show pressure levels anymore.

LT is it possible for a storm to come from the east? Or is there not enough sea for it to deepen?
On the northern hemisphere depressions spin anticlockwise generally moving west to east and form during unstable Atlantic airflow from the jet stream that blows west to east. Lows can form on the European continent and move towards us but it will never have the energy that the Atlantic gives. Hurricanes in the Northern hemisphere however go east to west just to fck things up a bit

yellow warning be aware Sunday into Monday for rain. Rain associated with ex Hurricanes Lee and Maria
Chief Forecaster's assessment
Spells of heavy rain are likely to reach western Britain later on Saturday and may become prolonged by the early hours of Sunday, only clearing southeastwards later on Sunday. Many places, particularly high ground will see 25-50 mm of rain, but where the rain becomes prolonged as much as 100 mm could fall over upland areas. The exact location of where the largest rainfall totals will occur is currently uncertain. Although it looks as if the more persistent rain should clear away southeastwards later on Sunday, further heavy persistent rain is possible in places on Monday; this appears more likely across the more southwestern parts of Britain.Strong winds are likely at times, with gusts of 50-60 mph possible in some exposed coastal areas.
Regions affected: Central, Tayside & Fife East Midlands North West England SW Scotland, Lothian Borders South West England Strathclyde Wales West Midlands Yorkshire & Humber

Ex-Hurricane Ophelia is forecast to track directly over Ireland during daytime Monday. Violent and destructive gusts are forecast with all areas at risk Also heavy rain will result in local flooding. There is potential risk to lives
The issue of red level severe weather warnings implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions. It is the highest level of alert Met Eireann can issue.

Thousands of homes and businesses across Cork and Kerry are without electricity as a result of falling trees bringing down power cables.
Falling trees have also blocked several important roads including; the N25 dual carriageway between Middleton and Cork city, which is blocked at Carrigtwohill, and the N71 between Leap and Skibberean in west Cork.
The R617 between Tower and Blarney is blocked, with a couple driving their car on the road having a lucky escape when a tree came down on their car.
The roof has been blown off one of the stands at Turner's Cross, the home of Cork City FC. The roof has also been blown off the Coast Guard station at Schull in west Cork. A terraced house has its roof blown off at Ardcullen, Hollyhill in Cork city while the roofs have been blown off a number of premises and homes in Glanmire, Bartlemy and Kinsale in Co Cork.

I hope you at least have a portable radio and lots of wine?
No portable radio but I had the lap top charged up so we watched a movie I had dowloaded on a USB stick last night.
The night before myself and Gav drank lots of wine and spent the night reading cards from the game 30 Seconds to eachother

If by cold snap you mean temps a few degrees lower on Monday yes but you would need to define what you mean by "Cold snap" as it is not a meteorological term
I expect Scottish mountains will get snow Monday

It was on the London weather that we will have a widespread ground frost on Monday morning and as I don't live in the City I fully expect to see frost on Monday morning :oh:
Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday
Cloudy at first Sunday, with some light rain, then brighter but colder. Dry with sunny spells on Monday after a locally frosty start. Cloudier Tuesday with some showers, milder.

a ground frost is not an air frost so i doubt you will see anything and i doubt you will get below 2 C. You can still get a ground frost at 2 C of course but you wont see hoar frost
