[The Met Office says a storm is set to hit
the UK next week - and has named it Storm Floris.
According to forecasters, Floris is set to bring
"unseasonably strong winds" to the UK on Monday,
along with "heavy rain".
Northern areas of England, Scotland,
and Northern Ireland are set to be
the worst-hit areas, according to the Met Office,
with a yellow warning in place.]

very hot, but i've noticed the sun going down so much earlier, i also watering the garden with the hose, much easier than filling the watering can like 5 or 6 times which is more exhausting to do
i also make our pavement wet, helps a bit cooling it down perhaps, as well as our house walls, also making those wet, feels very refreshing for me personally which i immediately notice

Beautiful
We had some hailstorms last night and then light thunder (well, light for us...) this morning. The hail just barely missed us but it was possibly up to an inch(?) in size. I hadn't seen anything that large, but some neighbors are posting video and shots... just trying to find the good ones now...
Some idle weather chatter:

I'm going to get like 3-4 cards on my door over the next week or so from roofers asking if we need our roof redone now that they see a storm that can possibly be referenced for ins claims...

Meteorologists in the US are doing this thing now where they compete on who is the most cheesiest (ie most socially awkward) weather person... Not limited to including inviting random strangers on the internet over to their home:

Also yay, a needed cold front. Plenty of thunder and dark clouds the past few days, but it just passes us :shrug: Part of my lawn is a little dormant/heat stressed, but most everything is St Augustine so still looks lush and green :love: The rest could use a drink, but it's supposed to rain in a few days.
Our temps are slowly dropping out of the 90s(32C~38C) into the high 80s (~30C) ... we might be able to go outside again soon!

For us, September usually means tropical season begins as this is about the time any systems start to make their way through.. all our storms of recent have been earlier, though.
Also, the sun has been busy. Northern parts of the US got an advisory for northern lights:

When I was in school, one of my professors was a retired engineer who worked as a project manager on one of Voyager probes (1970s) for NASA for the purposes of studying our weather. He was a stickler for both facts and accuracy (especially the miswording of things)... and even he was like "It's the ****ing sun".
Speaking of, I've been meaning to pull our my DSLR to take a peak at the sun with a solar filter... we've had two forecast events so far this past month or so for Northern Lights, even as far as Texas. So I guess it's been busy.

A band of heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue to move north across parts of
western England and east Wales bringing 1-2 hours of torrential rain in places before
clearing northwards. This will be accompanied by frequent lightning and a risk of hail.
20-30mm of rain is likely, with a few places perhaps seeing as much as 40mm which may
lead to some travel disruption.

Parts of Texas could see repeat of windy, stormy start of weekend
https://www.chron.com/weather/article/texas-thunderstorms-wind-hail-airplanes-21035472.php
Days after high winds toppled over airplanes and caused damage across parts of North Texas, severe storms are back in the forecast Sunday. The National Weather Service is calling for isolated thunderstorms "with hail and winds being the primary hazards" Sunday across the Texas Panhandle.
The winds could reach up to 60 mph with "quarter-size" hail possible. The NWS said the worst of the weather could come between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
Texas saw more straight-line windstorms of recent... we had a "Derecho" last year that tore through Houston and as we were in the worst spot for it, it knocked down major transmission lines and we were out of power for 4-5 days:

Further detail
Storm Amy is expected to bring a spell of very strong winds to many parts of northern Britain later on Friday and into Saturday. Westerly winds will pick up during Friday, initially in the west before extending eastwards during Friday night. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely for many areas and may reach 60 to 70 mph in some places for a time. Exposed coasts and hills will see the highest gusts which could exceed 80 mph. The strongest winds currently look more likely over parts of northern Scotland. This will lead to difficult driving conditions for high sided vehicles on prone routes such as cross winds on exposed or high level routes.
The very strong winds will also be accompanied by spells of heavy rain, most persistent across parts of western Scotland.
The winds will ease for most parts on Saturday afternoon but will continue to be very strong for the Northern Isles and parts of the far north of Scotland through to the end of the day before slowly easing overnight.
Took a shot of the sun with a solar filter because I saw we had an alert for increased solar activity.

Storm Amy is now AMBER for Western and North Scotland
Storm Amy will bring a spell of damaging winds, initially in western areas during Friday
evening before gradually transferring northeastwards through the night and into early
Saturday. During this period, wind gusts of 60-70 mph are likely fairly widely, and may
exceed 95 mph in more exposed areas. This is likely to lead to travel and power
disruption.

Nothing major cold in the offing. It will get cooler from next Friday but only by like 14 to 9 C. Any cooler weather will relate to high pressure moving in so more in the way of night frosts which means day max temps struggle as they start from a low base.

The timing is great bc hub's fam is flying to Miami, and he is flying to meet also. So they are getting away from the Northeast in time for this... (NY and PA)
30s = -1~4C;
40s = 5~9C;
50s = 10~14C;
60s = 15~21C;
70s = 22~26C;
80s = 27~32C;
Friday and Saturday
These will be warmer days, especially for early November. Expect highs in the mid- to upper 80s across the region, with mostly sunny skies. With dewpoints in the 60s it will feel humid, but not super sultry like the summertime in Houston. Lows will drop into the 60s on both nights, although areas north of I-10 may see cooler temperatures later on Saturday night. That’s because I think the front will reach our northern areas on Saturday evening or night, and push off the coast by around sunrise. This looks like a dry passage, although winds should pretty rapidly shift to come from the north.
Sunday
This will be a breezy, sunny day with highs likely topping out in the lower 70s. Temperatures on Sunday night will drop into the mid-40s in Houston, with cooler conditions further inland.
Monday
We are going to see ideal cooling conditions on Monday and Monday night, with lighter winds. Expect highs to perhaps only reach the low- to mid-60s. As for Monday night, temperatures should drop into the 30s to the north of Houston, with a few areas (i.e. Trinity and Polk counties) near but not within the Houston metro area flirting with a light freeze. In Houston itself I think temperatures remain in the vicinity of 40 degrees, but this is likely to be the region’s coldest night of the season.
The rest of next week
Tuesday is likely to bring highs of around 70 degrees before we return to temperatures of around 80 degrees for the rest of the work week. As for rain chances, they’re very low, to zero, for the next 10 days.
So a fairly typical fall/winter for us...

AMBER snow warning for East England
https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2025-11-20
Frequent wintry showers will feed inland from the North Sea, giving significant
snow accumulations over the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire
Wolds. By the end of Thursday, as much as 15-25 cm may have accumulated
on hills above 100 m elevation, which is likely to cause substantial disruption.
Gusty winds, giving occasional blizzard conditions, and perhaps a few lightning
strikes, may accompany some of the showers, posing as additional hazards.

Our weather is trying to winter, but failing. We had about a week or so of low to high 80s (26-31c) which is warm even for here. The day before fronts would coming through we had two tornados touch down just north of us. We knew something was up because there was persistent wind all the sudden, but no rain except towards the end of it we got a microcell of very heavy rain and then abour 30 minutes blue skies... and then stormy and cloudy for the rest of the day. We had a tornado watch through that evening.

An amber alert for Wales Monday
An area of heavy rain is expected to move over south Wales between late
Sunday and late Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary, some heavy and
persistent rainfall is likely to fall, especially over high ground, for example
Bannau Brycheiniog. Rain should clear to the east Monday night.
20-40 mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely across the wider region, but 60-
80 mm is likely to accumulate over some windward-facing high ground in
south Wales and perhaps nearer 100-120 mm in a few places.
Strong south to southwesterly winds will accompany the heavy rain,
particularly in coastal areas.

How much rain(hourly rainrates?) typically causes flooding? We live on a fast draining watershed so a lot of rain can be accommodated so I can't think of how to compare...
North of us... we got some really good lightning and thunder locally for a bit. Pup is hiding under covers with me since I am still fighting a URI.
It's been light rain on and off all day but not too muggy so had windows open for a little bit to bring in fresh air (there was a nice breeze for a bit).

It's been so humid, though. Normal for our mornings, especially when we have a very warm Christmas. This feels more Easter though with the warm temps and high humidity/fog. I'm still running air conditioning when it gets hot out, but in several days I'll be running the heater again...

Sunday and beyond
Sunday should be fairly warm as well, with highs pushing into the upper 70s, to possibly 80 degrees. A strong front is coming, but it’s now unlikely to reach our region before Sunday evening or the overnight hours. After this we’ll have a few cold days next week, with highs likely in the 50s, and lows in the 30s and 40s. I don’t think the majority of the metro area will see a freeze on Tuesday morning, but it’s a possibility we’ll be watching for as the mercury bottoms out. Temperatures should rebound a little by New Year’s Eve into the 60s, but at this point I suspect temperatures that night, heading into New Year’s Day will be chilly and in the 40s. So it will be fairly cold if you’re planning to be outside for revelries. The end of next week looks a little warmer.
Much of the South is going to have a very very warm Christmas. We didn't get a hurricane, so I guess everything works out in balance...

Instead of winter, we have fog which usually comes in heavy nearing Spring. And no, the wasps have not vacated, they're still chillin' out just casually waiting for Spring... St Augustine and Bahiagrass lawns are still very green. There's not that much yellow this year and usually our "winter" ends mid to late Feb. I saw some winter annuals in the backyard.
Ok, this was funny

Almost 80% of Europe’s surface is currently covered by snow. This is the
largest extent in recent years — see the comparison from our European snow
cover archive since 2018. 📉 The snow cover was significantly more extensive
only in 2010 and 2009, while a similar extent was recorded in 2017. In the
context of the last 20 years, the current snow cover therefore ranks around
fourth:

Potentially catastrophic winter storm now threatens over 35 states, prompts Winter Storm Watches for millions
https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/rare-potentially-historic-major-winter-storm-wallop-millions-from-south-east-coast
More than 200 million people are in the path of a potentially historic winter storm that's expected to extend over 2,000 miles and deliver crippling snow and ice across more than 35 states, all told beginning Friday.
A wide swath of winter weather will slam the country through the weekend, moving from the Southwest through Texas and Oklahoma, across the South and Tennessee Valley, before eventually reaching the Mid-Atlantic coast.
Behind the storm itself, Arctic temperatures could freeze snow and ice, potentially creating long-duration power outages and paralyzing travel for days.
The fact we pushed to winterize our power grid in Texas doesn't seem like such overkill anymore.

Local preparations for the ice storm that is moving in overnight. Power company have staged trucks all over the city. These are linemen from out of area that come in to help.

I'm not paying that much attention to predictions. The weather models are not tracking well with what is actually happening and so they've had to keep readjusting the forecast. We're running laundry in preparation to drain out pipes because our pipes are in our attics, so they won't make it through low 20s (F) (They're predicting -6 for us).
After all the hype, the ice never came to us. We had thunderstorms and heavy rain last night and ice rain was on the radar but I guess it never made it to the ground. It never got below freezing and they are saying the storms helped warm up the air.
Meanwhile north of us:
