BRITS are buckling up for ten days of storm hell from TODAY - no they are not

Snow could sweep the country this week as temperatures plummet - no it wont

Meteorologists have suggested several inches of rain could fall and winds of up to 60mph are likely. - maybe on the coast and hills same as every October

Brits have also been warned to wrap up warm on the run-up to Halloween and Bonfire Night - no they have not

Jim Dale - meteorologist for British Weather Services - said: - this bloke has no connection with the UK Met Office

-----------------------------------------

what the UK Met Office actually say:

Sunny spells and showers for most areas at the start of this period with some
places remaining dry. Feeling breezy at times especially along northern,
eastern and southern coasts. Temperatures falling to below average for most
across the UK, increasing the likelihood of snow and wintery conditions over
higher ground restricted to northern areas. It will likely turn unsettled again
over the weekend as cloud, rain and stronger winds arrive from the west.
Unsettled conditions then likely to persist towards the end of October across
the UK. Temperatures most likely trending up after a colder start to this
period. Any further spells of colder weather likely short lived and restricted to
the north of the UK.

Friday 5 Nov - Sunday 14 Nov

An unsettled and changeable start to this period with typically autumnal conditions
dominating the weather. Wettest and windiest conditions expected in the north and west
over the weekend with bands of heavy rain and showers and a risk of gales. Drier
interludes to follow these showers. There is a risk of this rain being impactful, however
it will most likely be less so than of late. Driest conditions most likely in the southeast
where any bands of rain will be weaker than those seen elsewhere. Occasionally windy
throughout with the strongest winds expected in the northwest but becoming less windy
by the end of the period. Temperatures will be around average with some milder
interludes however, some brief colder spells are still possible, especially in the south.

Monday 15 Nov - Monday 29 Nov

Temperatures set to be slightly below average overall throughout this period with an
increased likelihood of wintry showers from the north and northwest at times. These
showers are most likely over high ground with low risk of them reaching lower levels
later in the month. Less windy than the previous week overall, with stormy conditions
much less likely than usual. Little evidence to suggest any prolonged widespread settled
conditions as often areas of cloud, rain and showers will be around. Any clear spells
that do occur give way to frost and fog as expected for the time of year. Overall
remaining drier than average.

UK long range weather forecast

Friday 3 Dec - Sunday 12 Dec
Wintry precipitation moving eastward overnight Friday. Snow possible at low-
levels across northern England and Scotland for a time, before turning to rain
away from high ground. Further south snow likely confined to high ground.
Brighter showery conditions following, these frequent and heavy in the
northwest, wintry over high ground. Remaining windy, with gales possible in
exposed northern areas. Temperatures near normal. Continuing unsettled
through the rest of this period with spells of wet and windy weather,
interspersed with brighter interludes accompanied with showers. Likely the
wettest conditions to be in the west and northwest, and drier conditions in
the south towards the end of the period. Often windy with a risk of gales at
times, especially in the north and northwest. Often mild, with the potential
for brief colder interludes.

Monday 13 Dec - Monday 27 Dec

Overall, through this period it is expected to be unsettled and changeable
with milder and wetter than average conditions for most, bringing a risk of
stormy conditions. Perhaps turning more settled in southern regions for a
time nearer the start of this period, which will increase the risk of frost and
fog when skies clear overnight. Temperatures on the milder side for much of
this period, but some short lived colder spells are possible.

high pressure in winter = no wind

cold air is heavier than warm air and so it sinks

no wind means no mixing, the warmer air rises above it so

the glens and low land pools the cold air whilst the mountain tops are in the warm air

Netherlands: KNMI issues code amber warning for black ice and sleet

The warning applies to all but the southern provinces and the Wadden Sea islands, the KNMI said. The black ice will melt in most of the country as the morning progresses but there many also be wintry showers in the north, bringing sleet or a light dusting of snow.

It will be warmer on Thursday and Friday than in recent days, with the temperature rising to around 9 Celsius during the day, and remaining well above freezing at night.

On Saturday – Christmas Day – it will be chilly again, and this could lead to snow in places, the KNMI said.

From Sunday onwards, it will be grey with a 50% chance of showers on most days.

a weather warning for nasty wet weather has just popped up here for later today

A band of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move quickly eastwards today giving a period of intense rain and perhaps 15-20 mm of rain in a few places in an hour or less. These may be accompanied by lightning, hail and strong winds with a low risk that some places could see gusts of 50 mph.

Netherlands: Code Orange for Storm Corrie: Dozens of flights canceled; Road, rail traffic issues expected
Strong winds will cause problems for all forms of traffic in the Netherlands as winter storm Corrie blows across the country on Monday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange warning for Noord-Holland, the IJsselmeergebied, the Waddenzee area, and Friesland. Code yellow applies to the rest of the country.

The code orange warning will be effective from 8:00 a.m. until around noon. Strong winds with gusts up to 120 kilometers per hour are possible, the KNMI warns. The code yellow warning will be in effect for the entire day, also covering the code orange areas when that warning lapses. Gusts up to 100 kilometers may occur.

"Danger due to strong winds. Risks of falling trees and loose branches. Take measures to prevent damage," the KNMI warned. "Dangerous situations expected for traffic and water sports. Be prepared when leaving the house and take longer travel times into account. Follow weather reports and warnings."

KLM canceled 80 return flights on Monday as a precaution, a spokesperson said. "Especially the expected heavy winds that storm Corrie will bring are really in our way." A spokesperson for Schiphol Airport expected that the storm would have a "major impact" and "certainly flights to and from Schiphol will be delayed or canceled." That expectation was correct. The airport website already shows dozens of cancellations. Flights that aren't canceled are delayed.

ProRail has taken measures due to the storm. Until the afternoon, only two NS intercity trains will run per hour instead of four on the Den Helder-Zaandam route, for example. "This creates more space to solve any problems on the track quickly," said the rail manager.

ProRail said that it has breakdown teams and auxiliary trains ready "so that we can act as quickly as possible if necessary." The rail manager expects the most significant nuisance in Noord-Holland from things like trees or branches ending up on the track or overhead lines. Train passengers must take cancellations and delays into account. Keep a close eye on the public transport services' travel planners, ProRail advised.

Travelers' association ANWB advised road users to avoid the roads on Monday if possible. "What I am most concerned about are empty vans, cars with trailers, and trucks without freight. The past shows that these cause problems. Drivers should consider carefully whether they should take to the road," a spokesperson said. Vulnerable road users like motorcyclists and cyclists should stay home if possible. "If you don't have to go on the road, stay home. Or at least adjust your driving behavior."

In addition to being extremely windy, Monday will be very cloudy, with showers from time to time. Maximum temperatures will climb to 8 or 9 degrees Celsius. The winds will calm down as the day continues, dropping to moderate winds overnight, maybe strong along the coast. The night will be partly cloudy, with some rain showers spread over the country and minimums dropping to 5 degrees in the northwest and 2 degrees in the southeast.

Tuesday will start with clear spells in the east, but clouds will quickly take over from the west. Some showers are expected. Maximums will be around 8 or 9 degrees, with a moderate to fairly strong wind, strong at sea.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/01/storm-corrie-damages-estimated-eu10-million

Netherlands: Storm Corrie damages estimated at over €10 million
Storm Corrie caused over 10 million euros in damage in the Netherlands. The Dutch Association of Insurers reported this in an initial estimate. According to the insurers, the damage is relatively small due to the storm being most violent in the coastal areas, where people are well prepared for storms.

The Dutch Association of Insurers emphasized that it is not yet clear how extensive the damage will be. It depends on the damage claims submitted to insurers. Specific damages like that to the ship Julietta D are not included.

The Julietta D's anchor failed, and it collided with another ship in an anchor bay near IJmuiden. After the collision, the Julietta D took on water. The freighter drifted due to the storm and hit a platform under construction in an area where grid operator TenneT is building two transformer platforms to connect the Hollands Kust Zuid wind farm.

The strong wind also caused damage to homes, such as in Katwijk, where a piece of a house's roof was blown off. The detached roof section slammed into the facade of another house dozens of meters away, causing significant damage. Several trees toppled onto cars in the Haaglanded Security Region, including on Neptunusstraat in Scheveningen.

Rijkswaterstaat closed roads in multiple places in the country due to issues caused by the storm. The A5 at Schiphol was closed because of a toppled truck likely blown over by the strong wind. A truck lost a container on the A16 near Zwijndrecht towards Rotterdam.

"The storm that raged over our country on Monday turned out to be less severe, but the Netherlands also prepared well, partly thanks to the information and warnings by government institutions like the KNMI and insurers," said director of the association Richard Weurding. He warned that it would also be windy on Tuesday. According to Weurding, this can lead to consequential damage because loosened by the gusts yesterday may come free, and trees that have already been slightingly uprooted may fall over.

The storm was named after Corrie van Dijk. In 1964 she was the first female meteorologist employed by the KNMI.

AMBER for Friday: England

Extremely strong winds may develop over southwest England early on Friday, before
spreading north and east during the day. Whilst there is still some uncertainty in the
track of Eunice, there is an increasing likelihood of widespread inland wind gusts of 60-
70 mph and up to 80 mph in a few places. Around coasts of west Wales and southwest
England, gusts of 90 or possibly even 100 mph are possible. Winds are expected to ease
across western areas through the afternoon, and eastern areas during the evening.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/17/train-problems-storm-dudley-advances-130-kmh-gusts-expected-friday

Train problems as Storm Dudley advances; 130 km/h gusts expected Friday

The third official storm of this year, Storm Dudley, caused damage in various places in the Netherlands on Wednesday night. Already by 8 p.m., 100 km/h gusts were measured in IJmuiden and on the Houtribdijk, which separates the Markermeer and IJsselmeer. The stormy weather will also cause some disruption on the train tracks on Thursday. Storm Eunice will hit the Netherlands on Friday.

Fewer intercity trains are running between Zaandam and Alkmaar on the Amsterdam-Schagen route due to the weather. A tree on the track disrupted train traffic between Oldenzaal and Bad Bentheim on the route between Hengelo and Bielefeld in Germany. Buses are running.

Dudley is also causing problems on the roads. There's a tree on the parallel road of the A12 toward The Hague at the Lunetten junction. Rijkswaterstaat said the wind is still too strong to remove the tree but expects it can do it after the morning rush hour. Until then, the road will remain closed there. Traffic can continue on the main highway and turn at the Meern.

According to the ANWB, there is a 4-kilometer traffic jam between Bunnik and the Lunetten junction due to the situation.

Road stewards are removing fallen branches from the road in various parts of the country. This usually does not disrupt traffic, according to Rijkswaterstaat, but two exits in the north of the country are closed due to fallen trees - the Dronrijp exit on A31 towards Leeuwarden and the Hoogezand exit on the A7 towards Groningen.

In Maasluis, a tree blew onto a moving car on Rozenlaan. Firefighters had to free the two occupants from the vehicle. Emergency services took them to the hospital with injuries. In Oudkarspel, Noord-Holland, a car ended up in the ditch along Westelijke Randweg due to the strong wind. The driver was injured but did not have to go to the hospital, according to NH Nieuws.

A tree fell onto a parked car on Han Stijkelplein in The Hague. Regional news site Regio 15 reported that no one got hurt. Trees also toppled in other places in The Hague. In Alphen aan de Rijn, a roof edge blew loose on the Wintererf. The fire brigade secured the roof.

FlevoWegen announced that the Markewaarddijk between Lelystad and Enkhuizen will be closed for trucks and vehicles with trailers until at least Thursday morning due to the increasingly strong wind. Omroep Flevoland reports that a facade panel from a house blew free in Lelystad, and the fire brigade in Dronten got deployed to deal with solar panels that blew free from a roof.

On the A12, the connecting road from Utrecht to the A4 and the A13 toward Rotterdam had to be closed due to storm damage. A waste container's top cover blew off. Traffic from Utrecht to the A4 or A13 was redirected on the A4 towards Amsterdam, turning around at Leidschendam.

Eunice expected to bring 130 km/h gusts on Friday
Meteorological institute KNMI extended a code yellow warning covering all provinces except Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, and the IJsselmeer area until 3 p.m. on Thursday. A new code yellow warning covers the entire country from 2:00 p.m. on Friday, as storm Eunice arrives in the Netherlands.

The fourth storm of the year is expected to bringing gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour. "This can cause damage and danger from falling trees and flying objects," the KNMI warned. The harshest wind gusts are expected along the coast and at the north of the IJsselmeer. Elsewhere, strong gales ranging from 90-120 km/h are likely, the KNMI reported.

Due to the stormy weather, extra recovery vehicles are stationed on wind-sensitive bridges like the Haringvliet bridge, the Moerdijk bridge, and the Van Brienenoord bridge. The recovery companies can intervene immediately if problems arise on those bridges.

Infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat also issued warnings for Storms Dudley and Eunice over the coming days. Traffic throughout the country must take strong wind and stormy weather into account on Thursday and Friday, the agency said.

How's it looking in Manchester LT? I have a motorway journey that takes me over a bridge that is a nightmare in light winds with the high sided lorries.

They stopped double decker buses running from Manchester for a while yesterday in the winds.

12 to 4pm you are looking at 50 to 60mph gusts. 60 mph from the side on a motorway is very scary

im not saying it will be small storm, but the met office has had a tendency to be over dramatic on storms in recent years. I think a lot of it is down to fear of under rating it.

I'm old enough to remember the infamous Michael Fish met forecast which was very unfortunate

It was only unfortunate as it was badly interpreted and then hyped up. He stated there would not be a hurricane as the question asked (as they dont occur at this latitude) in the UK however we did experience Hurricane force winds as a sting jet formed. The UKMO did not have the technology to see that back then. The models back then predicted the track of the low to run south of the channel but it moved up. Essentially the issue was with the models and its why now every forecast the MO makes about low pressure tracks they caveat it now with that it could change track.

You are a bit elevated, so maybe 7-10cm - 5cm for most. The MO are not firm on Scotland snow as the winds down south are distracting them. As i see it at mo no

A red warning has now been issued for London and the south east

Code Red alert issued for coastal provinces as Storm Eunice approaches

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code red weather alarm for Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, Flevoland, and the IJsselmeergebied starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Storm Eunice will cause very powerful winds in these provinces, with gusts up to 130 kilometers per hour, the KNMI said. The Wadden Islands may see gusts reach 140 kilometers per hour.

A code orange weather warning is in effect for the rest of the country, except for Limburg. The KNMI expects gusts between 100 and 120 kilometers per hour inland. Limburg is covered by a code yellow warning, with gusts up to 90 kilometers expected in the province.

"Significant damage and perilous situations may arise from falling trees and flying objects," the KNMI warned. "The wind will decrease from the south at the end of the evening and into the night to Saturday.

The code red warning applies to Friesland, Noord-Holland, and the IJsselmeer region from 3:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. In Flevoland it applies from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and in Zeeland and Zuid-Holland from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The weather is affecting all types of traffic in the Netherlands. According to Eurocontrol, Schiphol is already facing moderate delays to arriving flights. The delays are expected to increase from 3:00 p.m. On its website, Schiphol reported 155 out of about 500 departures and 142 out of about 500 arrivals canceled.

NS and ProRail already announced that all train traffic would be halted from 2:00 p.m. Some local public transport companies run buses and trams according to the schedule, but travelers are advised to check for current information before departing.

Travelers' organization ANWB warned road users to be careful of very powerful winds on Friday afternoon. Public works department Rijkswaterstaat also warned motorists to be safe. "This is not a storm in a teacup. Prepare well when you hit the road."

The last time a Code Red warning was issued was in July due to heavy rainfall that caused immense flooding in Limburg. It was the third time the strict alert level was given in 2021. Storm Darcy also triggered the alert last February bringing snow and heavy winds. Freezing temperatures with badly iced roadways also led to a Code Red alert a week later.
