Met Eireann have warned that "very disturbed weather" is on the way as Hurricane Helene u-turns away from America.

The dangerous Atlantic storm is now on a collision course for Ireland, swirling north east towards us.

It is expected to gradually weaken over the coming days with the National Hurricane Center saying it may be downgraded to a tropical storm today, Thursday.

A NHC spokesperson said: “A turn toward the north and northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days.

"Maximum sustained winds remain near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Helene is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday.”

Ahead of its arrival, Met Eireann issued an update saying that while "there is a large degree of uncertainty in the details at present" the weather could get "potentially very disturbed early next week".

A weather record dating back more than 120 years was broken today in Aberdeenshire.

Aboyne saw a sweltering temperature for this time of year, reaching a balmy 18.3C.

also at a mini petting zoo here the workers there had made veggie ice for the animals
