Touch wood :umm2: my daughter is now on like day 8, has barely had symptoms and none of the rest of us seem to have caught it. I know it's technically still possible that we're incubating it but at 8 days in it seems unlikely, I doubt she's been contagious since last week, was maybe never very contagious, being almost totally asymptomatic .
Probably jinxed it now and I'll be on tomorrow like "I have sadly died".

yes the evidence is clear they are useless with BA2Anecdotal or actual? I agree that nation-wide trends make it seem that way but I can't find any evidence (as in scientific, actual research not observational) at all.
It may actually be that masks do still help but that transmission is mainly occurring in unmasked areas i.e. pubs and restaurants, between family members, within schools etc. (they have mask policies but the truth is of course that teenagers are **** at wearing masks or wearing them properly and are still all over each other).
I suppose what I'm saying is, there's actually a difference between the statements "Masks don't work" and "Mask policies aren't reducing spread" even though on the surface they might seem to be the same thing.

If you've had the third vaccine and you catch the virus you're less likely to end up in hospital.
I think it definitely helps with the symptoms, in case you catch it.

and over 3 weeks later im still testing pos
Mind you I had middle girl LT with me on that Monday and Tuesday and she did not get it from me but i think she may have already had it as she would deffo never test to find out in case she missed work
I was in the car for hours with the boy but not middle girl

has there ever been anything other than anecdotal evidence that masks halt the spread of infection? Ive heard lots of statements that masks work, but nothing actually scientific to back it up. Properly fitted, high grade surgical masks might help, but the general population either never wore surgical grade masks or had them actually fitted properly so that they would be of any realistic benefit

Borris says no :nono:
I've tested positive.
I felt at deaths door yesterday and still not too good today but better than yesterday. I decided to do a test and the two red lines came up within a minute.
I was pretty sure it was Covid, that's why I did a test. My symptoms was a pounding headache and cold shivers but no bunged up nose.
I think I'm over the worst.
Vicky.

I am a little baffled by people still testing when all isolation rules have gone out of the window tbh, especially now we have to pay for tests. Even though isolation only went out of the window because Boris wanted covid to go away due to his own rulebreaking
Hope you feel better soon alf. And anyone else ill. With or without covid.

Well Boris might not give a damn ,but some people still want to make sure they're COVID free ... Especially if they're working with vulnerable people or socialising alot.
Yes we're now told to "live with COVID" , and restrictions are lifted but this pandemic is still a pain in the neck. Even though we know we have to just get on with things.
Also some people are still trying to isolate ,for atleast a few days if they've tested positive.
I took the test and I'm actually positive now , been coughing and everything. If I was UNvaccinated I think my symptoms would have been ALOT WORSE.
EDIT .. And it's ridiculous how the tests cost money now, so yeah less and less people will do them as they won't want to pay.
Am I right in thinking that the only people who now get Covid are the vaccinated?

Thing is Alf you're not that old and (I assume) in good health. My daughter is unvaxxed also but she's 12 so she basically had a very mild headache for half a day and then a week of complaining that she couldn't see her pals. Can also officially say at this point (5+ days since she tested negative) that neither me nor my wife caught it from her, despite living with her and not really making her isolate in her room at all ... we just carried on as normal. And she also accidentally spat in my wife's mouth whilst positive. That was a whole thing. The whole story is, they were stood close together face to face and my daughter burst out laughing about something, sending spittle directly into my wife's face. Still no Covid  )
My dad on the other hand, is 67 and not in the best health, he had it in February and was very unwell (developed mild pneumonia). He got over it but he's still looking extremely thin, a bit worrying really. Also, when his sister had it (pre-vax back in 2020 - and yes I know that was an "old variant") she legitimately nearly died, was in ICU for 3+ weeks and still isn't right, 18 months later.
On the other hand, my wife's grandma who is nearly 90, very frail, deaf and almost blind has had it something like 3 times and only been mildly ill each time.
There's an element of pot luck it seems.

Very interesting and informative !
It was the sheer randomness and the fear of the unknown that was the worst for me for the first two years of Covid
Now symptoms are milder , PLUS we are triple vaxed PLUS we’ve both had it just recently ( Jan 2022) I don’t give it a second thought .
We just have to hope that a crazy new nastier variant doesn’t appear .

There are some crazy accounts around
That popular online Doctor occasionally has a guest from the US ( I think ) who looks about 25 and he’s a champion mountain biker so he WAS uber- fit . He has had one vaccination but was dreadfully ill ( not Covid) - I can’t recall all the issues he’s experiencing but they are my numerous and life changing - his problems started immediately after the jab and still persist many , many months later ..
Scary

Nicola Sturgeon has been reported to police after being filmed apparently breaching Scotland's face mask rules.
Footage on social media shows the first minister without a mask in an East Kilbride barber shop, which she had visited on the election campaign trail.
She posted footage of the visit on her own Instagram account with her mask on.
The SNP said Ms Sturgeon realised she was not wearing a mask "within a few seconds" of entering the shop.
It is legally required for people to wear face coverings in many indoor settings in Scotland until Monday, when the law becomes guidance.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We can confirm that we have received a complaint which is currently being assessed."
1515450324579926019
During the visit to the barber shop on Saturday, Ms Sturgeon shaved a man's beard while journalists took photographs.
The SNP leader later posted footage on her own social media feeds, describing it as "surreal" but one of the best and "scariest" things she had done on the campaign trail.
However, further footage was later posted online showing her interacting with people without her mask on.
A SNP spokesperson said: "The first minister was invited into the barbers during an outdoor visit on the street.
"Within a few seconds, she realised she hadn't put her mask back on and immediately put it on."
n December 2020 Ms Sturgeon apologised for breaching Covid-19 restrictions when she briefly removed her mask at a funeral.
The Scottish Conservatives have condemned the latest apparent breach of the rules as "blatant hypocrisy".
The party's health spokesman Dr Sandesh Gulhane MSP said: "The video clearly shows Nicola Sturgeon isn't practicing what she preaches on facemasks.
"She's happy virtue signalling for official photos but behind closed doors it's clear she doesn't believe in her own rules so why should anyone else.
"The public, who have been under these legal Covid restrictions for over two years, deserve an apology for this rule break."
A Scot Liberal Democrat spokesperson added: "It's incumbent on all politicians to set a good example. It looks like Nicola Sturgeon has lost track of what her own rules are."
The BBC has contacted Scottish Labour and the Scottish Greens for comment.
Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak recently rejected calls to resign, despite being fined by police for breaking lockdown rules in Downing Street in June 2020.

Comparing entering a shop without a mask to throwing parties is a little disingenous - however what she HAS done recently, is entirely completely ****ing fail to address or even acknowledge the ever-increasing cost of living/cost of energy/cost of fuel crisis that's going to result in significant (and awful) consequences for families across Scotland. So yes currently I would agree that she can **** off. But not because of COVID crap.
Honestly even a "we understand the issues this will cause for households and we're thinking about how to help" with no promises would be an acknowledgement at least but it's radio silence on these issues which is frankly utterly ridiculous.

Hmm. I had hoped the numbers earlier this week were just Easter catch-up but the steady increase to over 600 is... notable. Everyone seems to have written Covid off as "basically over" but my belief is wavering.
we could well have a new more lethal variant and we would know nothing about it

surprise surprise, the police aren't taking any action over NicolaFor briefly forgetting to wear a mask in a shop? :joker: I'd have been arrested 4 times over the last 2 years if it was enforced that strictly. A few weeks back I casually sauntered into the local Co op, got my stuff, paid, left and got half way home before realising I didn't even have a mask with me.

the numbers should start to drop with the warmer weather, so that will be a key indicator

The increase is numbers could also be due to how transmissable this variant is, so more people are dying with it rather than from it?
350 on vents across the UK out of 3,000 hospitals is not cause for concern I would have thought?
My 85 year old aunt has been called for her 4th booster so the continued vaccination of over 70s is still rolling out

Maybe but we're quite a long way into these more transmissible variants now so you'd expect those numbers to have gone up before now, unless something has changed in the last month or so. Ventilator/ICU numbers look fine but ... not to be too grim ... that only really means that a lot of the people dying have not been put on ventilator (which generally would mean it's elderly people who can often be too frail to ventilate).
we just don't know anymore. There could be any number of reasons for the rise and as we are not collecting/publishing all the relevant data anymore we are in the dark

They'll still be seeking out new strains (people are still tested on hospital admission/before procedures etc. and they'll be randomly analysing some of those) but yes in terms of case numbers, it's a complete mystery at this point. I don't feel there's much point in even reporting that number any more. It was never 100% accurate obviously as not everyone tested but now that testing barely happens at all, it could be 10x the reported number.
In fact... I'd hazard a guess that plenty of positive tests aren't in the stats. We never reported my daughter's positive LF and we didn't bother with a PCR (the line on the LF on the 2nd day was as dark as it gets). So in terms of stats, she never had it . Unless the schools report numbers I guess. Half her class had it at the same time.
They still do the random test sampling through the ONS which gives a pretty accurate picture across the country, much more so than the daily updates. That's showing that infections did peak a while ago and hospitalisations have been decreasing for a couple of weeks now as well. The daily dashboard deaths are not a particularly true figure this week either

I would largely agree that deaths should only be recorded as Covid deaths when it's the cause or a clear catalyst. I have to disagree with the idea that it shouldn't be recorded if there are underlying conditions. I mean sure you could leave out severe things like definite end-of-life illnesses or severe immune compromisation, but "underlying conditions" can be very common things like asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure (the vast majority of elderly people have at least one such minor condition), minor cancers that have high recovery rates, etc.
Those deaths should all still be recorded.
i think it should need to be recorded as the primary cause on the death certificate for it to be counted as a covid death

If the government are as morally corrupt as so many believe and are continually criticised for their management of Covid 19 - why aren’t they massaging the daily Covid stats to look an awful lot better each day ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Levels of Covid-19 are falling in all age groups of children and adults - and across most of the UK - according to the latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
One in 23 would test positive for the virus, down from one in 17 the week before - a 24% decrease.
Covid levels are declining in England, Scotland and Wales but are unchanged in Northern Ireland.
Despite the decreases, "infections do remain high," the ONS said.
"Infections have thankfully continued to decrease across most of the UK, though we are yet to see if this is part of a larger trend," said Kara Steel, senior statistician for the Covid-19 Infection Survey.
Around 2.87 million people would have tested positive for Covid in the week up to 23 April, down from 3.76 million the week before.
The figures are an estimate, based on tests on thousands of people in random households across the UK.
They provides the most accurate picture of Covid now that free testing for the public in England has come to an end.

The Covid pandemic has caused the deaths of nearly 15 million people around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates.
That is 13% more deaths than normally expected over two years.
The WHO believes many countries undercounted the numbers who died from Covid - only 5.4 million were reported.
In India, there were 4.7 million Covid deaths, it says - 10 times the official figures - and almost a third of Covid deaths globally.
The Indian government has questioned the estimate, saying it has "concerns" about the methodology, but other studies have come to similar conclusions about the scale of deaths in the country.

North Korea has ordered a strict national lockdown after confirming its first official Covid infections.
State media have reported an Omicron outbreak in the capital Pyongyang but did not state the number of cases.
KCNA said leader Kim Jong-un had vowed to eradicate the outbreak, which they called a "severe national emergency" that had breached the country's "quarantine front".
But observers believe the virus has long been present in the country.
Outsiders say the nation's 25 million population is vulnerable as North Korea has declined to administer a Covid-19 vaccine programme, even rejecting offers from the international community to supply millions of AstraZeneca and Chinese-made Sinovac jabs last year.
There have also been concerns about North Korea's impoverished healthcare system.

Can anyone explain these stats ?
Are they giving accurate account of Covid deaths ( ie extremely low) or are they possibly massaging the death count ?

Yes, free vaccines have been offered to North Korea
They said NO
They'd only say it's a covid death if that person's been tested I think and they hardly have any tests hence describing everyone as suffering from 'fever' instead

Kim Jong is not going to give a flying **** about the elderly or immune-compromised population dying though is he. It's not going to be the young "useful" population that it kills off... I'm surprised he didn't deliberately let it in earlier.
Expect Kim himself is likely to be quite vulnerable mind you, very overweight and allegedly has had heart surgery in the past

Unlike the rest of NK he'll have impeccable healthcare and (probably) will have had the vaccines too.

it's less mouths to feed being brutal about it, that will be his view and I agree he will be vaccinated. Of course it wont change anything in the slightest

Ok so yes, the element of separation anxiety is probably a very real concern (children suddenly expected to be away from their parents for full days) but the suggestion that “80 to 90%” of 4/5 year olds are turning up in buggies wearing nappies and unable to feed themselves is quite clearly absolute nonsense. I’m firmly branding this over exaggerated Daily Mail bollox until I see some indication to the contrary.

you need to be careful when you talk about hospitalisation. As the infection rate rises in the population, the chances of someone having covid when they are admitted for any reason, rises. The vents figure is the one to watch and it is very, very low and has been low for a while. There were > 3000 people on vents at one stage .... at a time when we had full restrictions in place .... today is just not comparable

Fair enough but ventilations are up from
150 to 211 which is an increase of just under 45% in the last 9 or 10 days .
How is that not a concern ..

its not a concern because it is a very low number. You understand statistics, so you know that if the base number is low, any rise generates a large percentage

:skull:Are there cases of people who take the Polio vaccine testing positive for Polio?
Maybe there are but I've never noticed or heard of that,Yet I've heard plenty of cases of vaccinated people for Covid catching Covid, including Fauci and this week Jeremy Vine. So my guess would be that the vaccines don't work.
thats been explained to you already at least 50 times Alf, and that's no exaggeration either

no surprises the rates have gone up, Glastonbury alone probably account for 90% of the increase

True but an 45% INCREASE every TEN DAYS will/could soon be a real problem .
