Zizu,,you have had the virus and survived, you have nothing to worry about

True but I worry about others as well plus I know people who’ve had it THREE times and were poorly each time ..

I had it five MONTHS ago and my lungs are still beggared - I’m breathless just walking up 10 steps .. plus I get leg ache throughout the night which prevents me sleeping. I rarely get more than 5 hours and even that is disturbed ..

Thought it was accepted that face masks are useless apart from maybe a psychological confidence boost for the wearer !?

I recall a microbiologist on the news saying that wearing a mask is as much use as closing a farm gate to keep the ANTS out !

You could put 250,000 Covid particles on the end of a pin head !

https://nltimes.nl/2022/07/27/covid-19-caused-8-netherlands-deaths-first-quarter

The coronavirus was still a common cause of death at the beginning of this year. In the first quarter of this year, 3,480 people in the Netherlands died of Covid-19, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) calculated. That is 8.1 percent of the total number of deaths in the first three months of 2022.

CBS based its figures on established causes of death. Information about this is generally passed on to the stats office later than reports of the death itself. That is why a clear picture of the causes of death can only form after a few months.

Compared to the first quarter of 2021, the number of deaths attributable to the coronavirus was more than half lower at the beginning of this year. In the first three months of 2021, 8,964 people in the Netherlands died from Covid-19, 19 percent of the total deaths.

At the beginning of this year, the Omicron variant was dominant in the Netherlands. This variant usually makes people less sick than its predecessors, but the number of infections was very high, especially in February. Every day tens of thousands of people received a positive test result from the GGD.

Mortality from Covid-19 was highest in March. Then, according to CBS figures, 1,443 people died of the disease caused by the coronavirus. In January, 1,004 people died of Covid-19, and in February, 1,033. Most (62 percent) were 80 years old or older. About 8 percent of the people who died of the coronavirus at the beginning of this year were younger than 65.

Despite the coronavirus deaths, the total number of deaths at the beginning of this year was not remarkably high, according to CBS. There was no excess mortality. In January and February, slightly fewer people died than would have been expected based on previous years. Cancer, cardiovascular and mental health and nervous system disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, were the most common causes of death.

According to the stats office, the coronavirus has caused 43,245 deaths in the Netherlands since the start of the outbreak in early 2020. Some of these deaths were diagnosed based on symptoms and not confirmed by a positive test.

OK Alf.

Covid: UK approves Moderna's Omicron booster

[The UK has become the first country to approve
a dual vaccine which tackles both the
original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant.
The upgraded vaccine should be available as
an autumn booster and give better protection
against variants.

Moderna said it could supply doses in the
next few weeks, but exactly who will get them
has yet to be announced.

All over-50s and people in high-risk groups
will be offered some form of booster from next month.
The original vaccines used in the pandemic were
designed to train the body to fight the first form
of the virus that emerged in Wuhan, in China,
at the end of 2019.]

China: Ikea shoppers flee store as authorities attempt lockdown | A six-year-old boy had tested positive after returning to Shanghai from Lhasa in Tibet, Shanghai Health Commission deputy director Zhao Dandan said on Sunday. Authorities realised the boy had been one of the customers in the Xuhui district store and rushed to close it down and lock the rest of the shoppers inside. Health officials are under pressure to enforce China's 'zero-Covid' policy that places residents into quarantine if an online app says they tested positive.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in the UK is continuing to fall, Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show.

Its latest data estimates 1.7 million people - about one in 40 of us - would have tested positive two weeks ago.

That is down significantly from 3.5 million in early July and school holidays may be part of the reason.

The number of people dying with Covid or being admitted to hospital with the virus is also falling.

We know there were a lot of controversial points in the covid lifecycle so far. I think the initial lockdowns were valid because the population was scared, but they went on way too long, and some areas were in near constant lockdown for months and months

The models were generally way to pessimistic by orders of magnitude, too much confidence was placed in the vaccine. The authorities were way to quick to vilify people choosing not to be vaccinated. I would hope that they would learn lessons from it all, but we know they wont

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/2AE7/production/_126738901_antivax_carrot_emoji_v2_640-nc.png.webp

Facebook groups are using the carrot emoji to hide anti-vax content from automated moderation tools.

The BBC has seen several groups, one with hundreds of thousands of members, in which the emoji appears in place of the word "vaccine".

Facebook's algorithms tend to focus on words rather than images.

The groups are being used to share unverified claims of people being either injured or killed by vaccines.

Once the BBC alerted Facebook's parent company, Meta, the groups were removed.

"We have removed this group for violating our harmful misinformation policies and will review any other similar content in line with this policy. We continue to work closely with public health experts and the UK government to further tackle Covid vaccine misinformation," the firm said in a statement.

However, the groups have since re-appeared in our searches.

One group we saw has been around for three years but rebranded itself to focus on vaccine stories, from being a group for sharing "banter, bets and funny videos" in August 2022.

The rules of the very large group state: "Use code words for everything". It adds: "Do not use the c word, v word or b word ever" (covid, vaccine, booster). It was created more than a year ago and has more than 250,000 members.

Marc Owen-Jones, a disinformation researcher, and associate professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, was invited to join it.

"It was people giving accounts of relatives who had died shortly after having the Covid-19 vaccine", he said. "But instead of using the words "Covid-19" or "vaccine", they were using emojis of carrots.

"Initially I was a little confused. And then it clicked - that it was being used as a way of evading, or apparently evading, Facebook's fake news detection algorithms."

Apparently these are just normal colds that we are all getting after two years of being uber careful to avoid getting Covid .

Some people have never stopped wearing masks and avoided crowded situations

I’ve been carrying on as normal for ages now .. although a work colleague just tested positive a few days ago so maybe this is just the start of another damn wave ..

Just as we booked flights to Florida for Christmas !!

Grrrrrrr !!

He also showed empty Cafe's

I feel like we did all know that being vaccinated didn't stop you catching or transmitting the virus though, I mean that was obvious by the fact we had our biggest wave of Covid last winter when we were all double jabbed

It's true that the pressure on people was enormous though and unfair, lots of people were railroaded into getting vaccinated when they were unsure about it and were shamed if they didn't. We never went down the road of vaccine passports thankfully but obviously it was a big thing in Europe

Oh the people trying to force others into being vaccinated against their wishes otherwise they're an evil bastard should've been ashamed of themselves.

Regardless of how people feel about the Vaccine, people should respect each others choice on the matter, and I'm with you that it was unfair the pressure that was put on people to have it.

then lets hope history holds the politicians accountable for the horrendous lies they told

"An influential government adviser has urged Nicola Sturgeon to ban people
who have not been vaccinated from pubs, restaurants, gyms and other indoor
leisure settings.

Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at Edinburgh University, said the time
had come to expand Scotland’s vaccine passport app beyond its existing limited

It’s the long term effects that are the current concern …

This is lifted straight off the official cdc.gov site - centre for disease control and prevention .

Adverse events (serious health problems) are rare but can cause long-term health problems. They usually happen within six weeks of getting a vaccine.

i think the same rules apply as always. If you are vulnerable due to health issues then taking the vaccine is less risk than the alternative. If you are fit and healthy then the balance of risk is probably on not taking the vaccine, but there is still a risk that catching it could see you off

a vaccine isn't going to stop a chest infection if it isn't covid. There are loads of different respiratory diseases at this time of year and viruses are not exclusive, you can have covid and flu and a chest infection all at the same time, all caused by different viruses

China is lifting its most severe Covid policies - including forcing people into quarantine camps - just a week after landmark protests against the strict controls.

People with Covid can now isolate at home rather than in state facilities if they have mild or no symptoms.

They also no longer need to show tests for most venues, and can travel more freely inside the country.

Citizens have expressed relief but also concern about the sudden changes.

"Finally! I will no longer worry about getting infected or being taken away as a close contact," one person wrote on Chinese social media.

Another said: "Can anyone explain to me what's happening? Why is the change all of a sudden and so major?"

The sweeping changes indicate China is finally moving away from its zero-Covid policy and looking to "live with the virus" like the rest of the world. This comes as the country is grappling with its biggest wave of infections - over 30,000 each day.

Spread it, worldwide, again?

[China will scrap quarantine for travellers
from 8 January, officials said,
marking the last major shift
from the country's zero-Covid policy.
After almost three years of closed borders,
this will reopen the country to those
with work and study visas, or seeking to visit family.
Chinese citizens will also be able to travel
overseas, the immigration authority said on Tuesday.

Covid has spread ferociously in the wake of
restrictions being lifted.
Reports say hospitals are overwhelmed
and elderly people are dying.

The true toll - daily case counts
and deaths - is currently unknown because
officials have stopped releasing Covid data.]

World Health Organisation warns XBB.1.5 is
the 'most transmissible' Covid variant yet
as 'the Kraken' strain starts sweeping the UK

[Concern about XBB.1.5 is largely based on how
it is currently surging in the USA,
but it has also already been spotted
in Britain and other countries around
the globe.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's technical
lead for Covid, told a press conference
Wednesday: 'We are concerned about
its growth advantage in particular in
some countries in Europe and in the USA... particularly
the Northeast part of the United States,
where XBB.1.5 has rapidly replaced

Is it more lethal compared to the other variants?

bots

XBB.1.5 itself evolved from XBB, which began circulating in the UK in September 2022, but which has not been classified as a so-called "variant of concern" by health authorities.

XBB had a mutation that helped it beat the body's immune defences, but this same quality also reduced its ability to infect human cells.

Prof Wendy Barclay from Imperial College London said XBB.1.5 had a mutation known as F486P, which restores this ability to bind to cells while continuing to evade immunity. That makes it spread more easily.

She said these evolutionary changes were like "stepping stones", as the virus evolves to find new ways of bypassing the body's self-defence mechanisms.

Scientists from the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Wednesday that XBB.1.5 has a "growth advantage" above all other sub-variants seen so far.

But they said there was no indication it was more serious or harmful than previous Omicron variants
