Heard one of those friend of a friend rumours last night..
Apparently loads and loads of young people (under 35) are having strokes and / or blood clots after having a vaccine jab BUT as soon as it’s reported on social media the authorities take it down ...
One of our friends is seriously scared now despite all our reasoning and reassurances .
It sounds like a load of complete bollox to me plus the idea of the government having a system in place to delete any damaging rumours also seems preposterous
Thoughts please .. or any arguments we can use to try and calm her down
Thanks

sooooo pfizer booster jab apparently only protects you 75% against omicron, for ''3 months'' and then down to 25%
and first two jabs protect up to 70% and then 40% against omicron

But too many have already, lost staff.

We must stop the perpetual spiral of restrictions
With most of the population double- or even triple-jabbed, we are still having
the same debate as last year.
TELEGRAPH VIEW
The ministerial backlash against new pre-Christmas Covid controls marks a
welcome reassertion of Cabinet government and is a further sign of Boris
Johnson’s waning authority. Urged on by scientific advisers worried about a
January surge, the Prime Minister was minded to order new restrictions. But
he was beaten back by demands from his colleagues that more data be made
available about the trajectory of the omicron variant and the ability of the
NHS to withstand the pressure it is coming under.
A planned news conference at which the new measures were expected to be
announced was cancelled, with Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, among those
unwilling to countenance further damage to the economy without cast-iron
evidence and a coherent exit plan. The resignation of Lord Frost, Mr
Johnson’s closest Cabinet ally, over the prospect of more restrictions proved
to be the writing on the wall following a revolt by 100 backbenchers against
some of the so-called Plan B measures. With the Commons in recess, Mr
Johnson could not this time put his plans to a vote and rely on Labour to get
them through.
Arguably, the Prime Minister has ended up in the worst of all worlds.
Although he was not able to act yesterday, given that the threat of further
restrictions is still hanging over the public, many will be wondering whether
their Christmas plans should go ahead after all.
The alarming, even alarmist, forecast from Sage advisers – that up to 6,000
people could die a day next month – is the worst-case scenario, yet one that
is helping to control interactions of people through fear rather than diktat.
The reliance on models that appear designed to support a particular policy
approach is worrying; and ministers have evidently decided no longer to take
these at face value. They are asking for more of the information that we all
need to make an assessment of risk: how many people in hospital are
unvaccinated, what are their ages and other morbidities, and why are we
panicking when evidence from South Africa suggests this variant is more
benign than delta?
Moreover, there is no need to reach for statutory controls when guidance is
bringing about a similar outcome by changing behaviour. But while this
approach is preferable to using emergency powers, it also needs to be put
into proper perspective otherwise the Government is achieving a lockdown by
stealth.
That may well be the intention. But the consequence is that restaurants,
bars, theatres and other entertainment venues that rely heavily on pre-
Christmas trade to survive in the new year have again been pulverised by
cancelled bookings. Retailers also suffered on what should have been their
busiest weekend of the year, with the number of people on the high street
sharply down.
This is happening not because omicron seems to be especially virulent but
because the NHS faces meltdown as beds fill up and as more and more staff
take time off after they test positive. A critical manpower shortage is looming
that will feed into other key sectors and affect supply chains across the
board. The Government needs to amend the 10-day isolation requirement for
fully vaccinated people, otherwise the country will come to a grinding halt in
a few weeks’ time. This needs to be reduced to seven days at the most or to
end immediately after a negative lateral flow test.
What is extraordinary is that we are enduring precisely the same debate as
last Christmas, though then it was the Kent variant prompting lockdown
demands. Within a few weeks the number of cases soared, peaking at below
the case numbers we are seeing today, though fatalities were much higher.
But there is one fundamental difference between then and now: most people
have been double or even triple jabbed, and the vaccines – particularly with
a booster – are standing up to omicron.
If scientists and NHS chiefs seek to replicate virtually the same measures
that were deemed necessary before a vaccine was available, massive
questions are raised over how this spiral of despair can ever be brought to an
end. Covid is heading towards becoming an endemic disease that
experiences a surge every winter, as happens with all respiratory illnesses,
almost certainly involving more variants. Is this to go on for ever?

https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/21/omicron-variant-now-causing-15-dutch-coronavirus-infections-vaccines-less-effective
The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus now accounts for 10 to 15 percent of infections in the Netherlands, RIVM director Jaap van Dissel told the Tweede Kamer on Tuesday. Without a booster shot, the current Covid-19 vaccines used in the Netherlands are expected to be about four to five times less effective preventing an Omicron variant infection than a Delta variant infection. The Delta variant has been the most dominant variant in the country since July.
The Omicron variant is already causing a slightly larger share of infections in Amsterdam, Van Dissel said. It is expected to displace the Delta variant to become the dominant variant in the country by the end of the year.
Van Dissel also said that 85 percent of the people who were infected with the Omicron variant were fully vaccinated. This figure was about 62 percent regarding the Delta variant. People who previously were infected with coronavirus also seemed to be less protected against the Omicron variant, he said. Of the group that contracted the Omicron variant, about 3 percent previously recovered from the coronavirus. With the Delta variant this was slightly more than 1 percent.
Although a full course of vaccination provides reasonable protection against the Omicron variant in the short term, the effectiveness is expected to decrease quickly, Van Dissel said. A booster shot can "upgrade" the protection level against the Omicron variant. The effectiveness of the booster shot will also decrease over time, but less quickly, Van Dissel predicted.
"The vaccine was made against the Wuhan variant, which has not been circulating for a long time," explained Van Dissel. The Delta and Omicron variants are so different that the vaccine no longer recognizes them well, he added.
Van Dissel emphasized that it is still uncertain whether Omicron is as pathogenic as the Delta variant. During his presentation to the public health committee, he also showed the same graphs he showed Cabinet members last week, which showed that an extension of the evening lockdown could likely lead to over 4,000 Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care at the same time. Currently, the ICU system has a maximum capacity of about 1,200 spaces, with roughly 700 ready for Covid-19 cases.
Shortly after Van Dissel’s presentation to some Cabinet members, ministers and mayors were asked to attend emergency meetings about the state of the pandemic in the Netherlands. Later on Saturday, the Netherlands announced a full lockdown to last until January 14.

You cannot counter-argue unsubstantiated claims
because they are unsubstantiated
The whole basis for their status is where they came from
"Its going to snow in Falkirk on Christmas day, 6 inches"
really who said so?
"The Met Office" - so if we find out it is the UKMO then we know it has a good chance of happening
or
"Dianne Abbot was on GMB and she said it"
then we know for sure its utter bollocks

This is silly even for you Cherie - there’s a constant rotation of people in and out of ICU every day, some new people in some out (either dead or recovered). It’s not the same people. There’s a drop of 40 total but that could mean that 400 left ICU (by whatever means) and 360 entirely new patients entered ICU.

Not sure where you have been out in Manchester Zizu but I have been all over in the past couple of days. Trafford centre yesterday, 90% wearing masks, my local Tesco (South Manchester - the security guard reminds you when you walk in, most people wear them) and I was at my Dads yesterday (North Manchester) and went to his local Asda and pretty much everyone wearing masks, staff included. The main place people seem to be failing to comply is on public transport. I see buses go past when I'm in my office and very few people seem to be wearing them on there
my experience is that > 95% of people are wearing masks where they have been mandated. To me that is a fantastic response. I think if they were to bring further restrictions in there would be a lot of outrage and i can sympathise with that. If we get further restrictions like is happening in scotland what was the point in getting a booster at all. I think there will be massive political fallout
well if the vaccines dont work then masks certainly dont
That has nothing to do with my point about mask wearing and the LAW to be fair
It is apparently LAW not just a suggestion but nobody seems bothered ... sooo I’m thinking that if everyone disregards this law then will they take any notice of any further regulation changes

Germany going for stricter measures as of December 28th + a fireworks ban, only one place for fireworks and that is at silvesterparty at brandenburger tor
https://www.thelocal.de/20211221/germany-agrees-tougher-covid-restrictions-from-december-28th/
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz outlined new Covid restrictions to come into force after Christmas, including a cap on the number of people who can socialise and the closure of nightclubs.
Following a meeting with German state leaders on Tuesday, Chancellor Scholz announced contact restrictions would also affect people who are vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19.
He said private gatherings would be limited to 10 people from December 28th. Children under 14 are not included.
The contact restrictions already in force for the unvaccinated will remain. People who choose not to get vaccinated are allowed to meet with their own household and a max of two people from another household.
“This is not the time for parties and cosy evenings with lots of people,” Scholz said, adding: “I would have liked to share more pleasant news just before the holidays.”
Meanwhile, Germany will ban spectators from large sporting and cultural events also from December 28th. “This applies in particular to football games,” Scholz added.
Nightclubs and discos will also have to close. As agreed at a previous round of talks earlier in December, the sale of fireworks for New Year’s Eve will be banned.
The measures agreed match those put forward in the draft proposals from Monday.
Chancellor Scholz said the measures already put in place in Germany – such as the nationwide restrictions on the unvaccinated – have been successful, and that is shown by the falling number of Covid infections.
But he said said there was a new challenge in the form of the Omicron variant.
Scholz said the aim was to “prepare Germany for the next corona wave”.
He said he understood people who don’t want to hear anything more “about corona, about mutations and new virus variants. But we cannot and must not close our eyes to the wave that is about to come.”
Scholz added: “Even those who have been vaccinated twice and those who have recovered run a high risk of becoming infected.”
Earlier in the day, Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had called for tougher measures, including contact restrictions and the closure of restaurants, bars and clubs, to be introduced “immediately”.
But the government and state leaders have gone against this call.
Scholz said past experience had shown events like Christmas and Easter were not proven to be pandemic drivers, and that is why restrictions would come into force after Christmas.
He said people in Germany could enjoy the holiday season with caution and regular Covid testing.
However, states can choose to go further than the restrictions agreed at the federal level. The city state of Hamburg earlier on Tuesday announced it was to bring in Covid restrictions from December 24th.
Scholz said vaccination “remains our goal” so that as many people as possible are protected from Omicron. He said Germany’s target was to reach a vaccination rate of 80 percent. As of Tuesday, 70.4 percent of the population in Germany is fully vaccinated.
The next round of federal and state talks is scheduled to take place at the beginning of January.

Every year lots of people are hospitalised and die with the flu. Like I keep asking, where are those numbers now?
So they can accommodate the homeless, but they don't. But they will if they take the vaccine. Nothing like a bit of desperation bribery.

We are heading for a face off between real world data and Sage modelling
Now that the government has refused to call a lockdown, SAGE scenarios can
be measured against the real-world outcomes
How the left loves trying to establish the narrative that we have a Government of charlatans pitched against the collected
wisdom of scientists. Yet the real schism lies within science, between the modellers and those who prefer to read real world
evidence. With hospitalisations failing to rise at anything like the rate feared a few days ago, and with the UK Health Security
Agency poised to announce that yes, omicron does indeed cause milder disease than earlier variants, it feels as if we are
heading for the denouement, the gunfight at the OK Corrall, at which one side will win the decisive battle and the other side
be humbled.
When omicron first emerged in South Africa a month ago two things seemed immediately apparent: firstly that this variant was
a lot more transmissible than earlier variants, and secondly, that it was causing milder illness. Indeed, it was the unexpected
mildness of the symptoms which first drew doctors’ attention to the possibility that this could be a new variant – something
which was then rapidly confirmed by the country’s excellent facilities for sequencing the virus.
What was anecdotal at first was soon confirmed by real data. A presentation last week by the South African Medical Research
Council and Discovery Health, one of South Africa’s large healthcare providers, showed that the omicron wave was evolving
very differently from earlier waves. The infection was spreading faster, but hospitalisations were not responding to anything
like the same extent as they were during the alpha and delta waves.
Yet in Britain this evidence went largely ignored. Instead, Sage’s modellers – first the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine (LSHTM) and then Imperial College – put out terrifying projections showing hospitalisations and deaths possibly rising
to even higher levels than they during April 2020 or last January’s peak. LSHTM produced a scenario which showed
hospitalisations rising to a peak of 7190 a day in January – 60 percent higher than last year.
Meanwhile, Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College suggested there could be 5,000 omicron deaths a day this winter
without more restrictions.
Sage spokespeople, opposition parties and some government minsters panicked and wanted to throw the country into
immediate lockdown, with all the economic and social havoc that entails. Fortunately, however, a sceptical quorum of cabinet
ministers wanted to know more. Among the questions I am sure they will have asked at Monday’s cabinet meeting is: why did
the modellers ignore the emerging evidence from South Africa that omicron caused a milder disease? Both LSHTM and
Imperial’s models assumed that the new variant was every bit as deadly as delta – and they didn’t model the possibility that
it might be rather less so.
Does this make the sceptical cabinet ministers anti-science? Hardly. It just
means they had the confidence to ask the right questions and realise that different scientists were painting very different stories. Angelique Coetzee
certainly wouldn’t
appreciate being called ‘anti-science’. She is the South African doctor who
discovered omicron and who has consistently
warned that European countries are over-reacting to the threat posed by the
variant and that they are wrong to distrust data
from South Africa.
She and Sage’s models can’t both be right. We are not yet at the end of the
story – far from it – but if we do have a massive peak of hospitalisations and
deaths over the next month, surpassing that of previous waves, then we will
have to respect Sage’s modelling. If not, there will be nowhere for those
modellers to hide – given that the government has refused to call a
lockdown, their scenarios can be measured against the real-world outcome.
If omicron fizzles into relatively little, as it already appears to be doing in
South Africa, the government will have to start asking: is Sage, and its
fixation on modelling, fit for purpose?

You can blame brixton and its pastors for certain areas where anti vaxers flourish.
A remarkable 5 per cent of residents have the virus. And the high level is partly explained by the 32.4 per cent of locals who remain unvaccinated.

Mark Drakeford accused of lying over claim omicron is ‘probably’ as severe as delta
https://i2-prod.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/incoming/article22489850.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200/1_First-Minister-Mark-Drakeford-MS-visits-Coleg-Cambrias-Bersham-Road-site-in-Wrexham.jpg
Health expert attacks Welsh First Minister for ‘deceiving the public’ to justify
Covid restrictions despite studies refuting his comments
Jamie Jenkins, the former head of health analysis at the Office for National
Statistics (ONS), said that the Welsh First Minister had made an “untrue
statement with the intent to deceive” as he scrambled to justify his
coronavirus restrictions in the face of evidence that the latest Covid variant is
milder.
On Wednesday, Mr Drakeford said he did not think it is “as simple as saying
omicron is less serious than delta”.
“If you have been infected previously, it may be that it is a less severe
attack,” he told a press conference.
“If you have never had coronavirus and you get omicron, the evidence is it is
probably just as severe as any other form would be.”
His comments came despite new studies from the University of Edinburgh,
the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and a group of South African
scientists, which all suggested that omicron produced less severe symptoms
than delta, and was between 50 and 80 per cent less likely to hospitalise
patients.
He said that the Welsh Government appeared not to have firm evidence to
support Mr Drakeford’s assertion that omicron was likely to be as severe as
delta.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/12/23/mark-drakeford-accused-lying-claim-omicron-probably-severe-delta/
People catching Omicron are 50% to 70% less likely to need hospital care compared with previous variants, a major analysis says.
The UK Health Security Agency says its early findings are "encouraging" but the variant could still lead to large numbers of people in hospital.
It also shows the vaccine's ability to stop you catching Omicron starts to wane 10 weeks after a booster dose.

No
I mean, other nations talk to him.
Sir Patrick Vallance said in the Times today that
It is not his job to be optimistic
:umm2:
it's his job to be as accurate as possible, if that warrants some optimism like we should be seeing now from the actual data, then he should reflect that

good reply to that article in the DT by a lady called Caroline:
"I'm sorry, but Sir Patrick Vallance should after two years of this crisis,
understand that nothing SAGE has predicted has in fact transpired. That their
unforgivable hysteria is based on nothing more than 'maybes'. That is not
science that is scientism. For science, one needs to look to the signatories of
the Barrington Declaration published in 2020, for had their advice been
followed then, how different our lives would be now.
When the statistics and scientific data do not support what SAGE are advising
Government then why should any intelligent person believe them?
Take for instance, the last few weeks, when despite all data coming out of
South Africa showing us that Omicron is a mild variant albeit highly
transmissible, yet not causing hospitalisation in any great numbers and
hardly any deaths, this advisory body wished for this country to be locked
down again, for the second, successive Christmas.
For Patrick Vallance to try and defend these ridiculous, unscientific decisions,
just adds to the absurdity; he has to face up to the fact that for most
intelligent people SAGE was and is causing more damage to this country and
its people than the virus itself, both economically and societal. That the
Prime Minister cannot see this is beyond me.
Of course, for these members of the group, they are only relevant while this
crisis exists, and for that reason may want this situation to be extended into
yet another year of misery. We must as citizens of this great country, stand
up to this madness, while we still have a country left to save."
