New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has cancelled her wedding after announcing new Covid restrictions.
The entire country is set to be placed under the highest level of Covid restrictions after an outbreak of the Omicron variant.
The restrictions include a cap of 100 vaccinated people at events and mask wearing in shops and on public transport.
New Zealand has recorded 15,104 Covid cases and 52 deaths.
Ms Ardern confirmed to reporters on Sunday that her wedding to television host Clarke Gayford would not be going ahead.
"I am no different to, dare I say it, thousands of other New Zealanders who have had much more devastating impacts felt by the pandemic, the most gutting of which is the inability to be with a loved one sometimes when they are gravely ill," she said.
"That will far, far outstrip any sadness I experience," she added.
The new restrictions come into force at midnight on Sunday local time (11:00 GMT).
It comes after a cluster of nine Omicron cases were confirmed.
A family who had attended a wedding in Auckland tested positive after returning home to the South Island. A flight attendant also contracted the virus. Officials say the level of community transmission from the group is expected to be high.
Indoor hospitality venues and events will have their capacity capped to 100 vaccinated people or 25 if vaccine passes are not being used. This also includes gyms and weddings, the New Zealand Herald reports.
Students including year four and above will be required to wear masks in school.
New Zealand has operated under strict Covid rules since the start of the pandemic, allowing it to keep deaths to a minimum. It was one of the first countries in the world to close its borders and quashed earlier outbreaks with lockdowns.
But since the emergence of the Delta variant, Ms Ardern has switched from a total Covid elimination strategy to pushing for higher vaccination rates and treating the virus as endemic.
It's thought that about 94% of the country's population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated and 56% of those have had their boosters.
Last year, the country announced plans to reopen borders as part of a staged reopening. Foreign travellers will be the last group to be granted entry into the country, from 30 April.

Because whilst accepting their scientific views may be less snobbish, less offensive, more "woke", it's also plainly ****ing stupid.
the trouble that NZ and China have is that if they lock down the moment they get an infection they will just go into an infinite cycle of lockdowns. I cant see that doing the economies or mental health any favours for the foreseeable future.
We dont know what will happen with variants in the future, but governments have the tools now to be a lot smarter than just locking everything down

We dont know what will happen with variants in the future, but governments have the tools now to be a lot smarter than just locking everything downNZ yes, China is so huge that (assuming they genuinely can contain it) they could feasibly lock down large areas/regions at a time in an endless cycle without ever locking down the whole country.
Of course with Omicron their chances of actually containing it are quite slim.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2022/01/ministers-meet-to-discuss-relaxing-coronavirus-rules-amid-soaring-cases/
Netherlands: Ministers and health experts are meeting at the prime minister’s official residence on Monday morning to decide what the next steps in dealing with the pandemic should be, ahead of Tuesday’s press conference.
On Saturday the NRC said the government’s coronavirus advisory group, the Outbreak Management Team, is recommending opening cafes, bars, restaurants and the cultural sector again, albeit with limited opening hours.
While the OMT suggests closing cafes and theatres at 8pm, cabinet sources told broadcaster NOS that ministers are looking at allowing the cultural sector to open longer, because of the difficulties of staging shows with an early closing time.
The further relaxation of the rules, if confirmed, would come at a time when the number of new infections is soaring and the regional health boards are struggling to cope with processing the numbers.
On Sunday, 65,393 new infections were reported to the public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to 10am, but thousands of other cases have not been processed.
The backlog of cases, the RIVM said, had gone up to 48,000 over six days.
Protests
Both the hospitality industry and the cultural sector staged protests about being closed last week, and a number of local mayors have called on the government to ‘fundamentally rethink’ its coronavirus strategy.
Junior culture minister Gunay Uslu said before the Friday cabinet meeting that cultural institutions should open as quickly as possible. ‘They have been closed for too long and that has to change,’ she said.
In parliament on Thursday, prime minister Mark Rutte said the government ‘is hoping for a relaxation in the rules but can’t give any guarantees’ until it has data on the effects of opening shops, contact professions and gyms on Saturday 15 January.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/25/events-cultural-sectors-disappointed-expected-lockdown-relaxations
Netherlands: Events organizer ID&T is "deeply disappointed" about the leaked lockdown relaxations after "repeated calls to the Cabinet to come up with a fully-fledged and realistic plan," director Ritty van Straalen said. "With only one-third capacity, it is not a reopening. Staying closed for any longer, with no clear perspective, feels like a deep insult to our entire industry."
According to insiders, the Cabinet will allow a maximum of 1,250 attendees for indoor events with mandatory seating. Outside, events can fill the capacity to a maximum of one-third. The relaxations will be announced during a press conference on Tuesday evening.
"Despite the fact that these 'relaxations' make it seem like the event sector can open again, this is not the case," said Van Straalen. "The situation is untenable and, combined with the lack of perspective, has a very demotivating effect on our entire sector."
Van Straalen said that the company would continue to call on the Cabinet "to come up with a fully-fledged and realistic plan" for the industry. "Without social distancing and without capacity restrictions, to save the once-thriving event industry, and so that we can get out of this crisis together."
The cultural sector is also not happy with the leaked relaxations. A closing time of 10:00 p.m. "is impossible or very difficult to work with for many theaters and companies." So said Sanne Wallis de Vries, comedian and co-initiator of the protest action Hair Salon Theater.
"I find it incomprehensible that no exception is made for the theater sector," said Wallis de Vries. "If we can stay open until 11:00 p.m., then it makes all the difference to the sector and nothing to the virus and policymakers."
Opening is also not profitable if visitors have to keep 1.5 meters apart, she said. "In short: if the conditions are closing at 10:00 p.m and social distancing, that means many theaters will remain closed. And many players will not play. So it's a sham. And nobody understands why."
The other initiator of Hair Salon Theater, Diederik Ebbinge, agrees with Wallis de Vries, he said on Twitter. "We are very curious why the extra hour is not allowed for those who can play. That helps enormously. Bruls' argument of 'at the same time as the catering industry, that's easier to enforce' does not count," he said.
With Hair Salon Theater, several theaters in the Netherlands were converted into hair salons, massage studious, or beauty salons last Wednesday. Visitors could get a haircut or a facial while watching a performance. The theaters wanted to show that they could open as safely as contact professions, which the Cabinet reopened in the previous set of relaxations.
-----------------------
https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/25/mayors-urge-closing-time-everyone-covid-press-conferences-approaches
Prime Minister Mark Rutte and coronavirus Minister Ernst Kuipers will announce the relaxation of some coronavirus measures in a press conference on Tuesday evening. The cultural sector can reopen under certain conditions, as can restaurants and bars. Events will be possible again under strict conditions. The mayors on the Security Council urged the Cabinet to set the same closing time for all sectors. "Use one time. That makes communication clear and easier," said chairman Hubert Bruls, mayor of Nijmegen.
The Cabinet will make the final decision on relaxing measures on Tuesday, but Rutte already said last week that he was optimistic about the room to loosen restrictions.
For the first time, the Cabinet also published the advice of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT). The OMT only wanted businesses to remain open until 8:00 p.m., but it looks like the Cabinet opted for a closing time of 10:00 p.m. The OMT also advised allowing spectators at sports matches.
The mayors in the Security Council advised the government to stick to one closing time. Because one time is easiest to enforce, the mayors concluded. Bruls did not say what closing time the mayors would suggest. The longer you stay open, the greater the chance of infection, he said after the Security Council meeting with Justice Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz in Utrecht on Monday evening. "We have to accept that more people are going to get sick."
That is also happening in neighboring countries where most restrictions have been scrapped. There is also greater pressure on the healthcare sector. Nevertheless, according to Minister Yeşilgöz, the Netherlands cannot be compared one-on-one with other countries because other regulations like the 2G coronavirus access policy apply there. That is why the 25 security regions recommend coordinating the policy with the surrounding countries. "It is good to align the measures with neighboring countries," said Bruls.
The OMT also said that children up to the age of 12 no longer have to quarantine if they don't have Covid-19 symptoms. They are advised to do a daily self-test if they had contact with someone who had the virus. If that is not possible, the GGD or doctor may still recommend quarantine.
The rules around quarantine are in the spotlight because the number of Covid-19 infections is rising so rapidly. If too many people have to stay at home due to an infection or close contact with someone infected, sectors risk getting into trouble. Employers' organizations VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland asked the Cabinet to relax the rules for workers, warning that "half of the Netherlands will soon be sitting don't he couch without complaints."
The high number of infections is also causing problems in the test line. The GGDs have reached the limit of their testing capacity, the umbrella organization said on Monday.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/25/validity-covid-vaccination-recovery-certificates-shortened-match-eu-countries
Netherlands: From February 1, Covid-19 vaccination certificates in the Netherlands will be valid for 270 days from the date of vaccination. Recovery certificates will be valid for 180 days. This is equal to other European countries.
That means that if you want to get a coronavirus access pass in the Netherlands, you must show that you were vaccinated or got a booster shot less than nine months ago, recovered from the coronavirus less than six months ago, or tested negative for the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.
The coronavirus access pass is usually in the form of a QR code on the CoronaCheck app. The expectation is that these access passes will be widely used again once the Cabinet reopens the catering, cultural, and events industry. Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Ernst Kuipers will give a press conference tonight.
Former Health Minister Hugo de Jonge announced in December that the validity of the vaccination certificate would be limited as per the EU standard. "The protection decreased the longer the full vaccination has been completed," he said at the time.
All paper certificates for Covid-19 vaccinations and recovery will expire on April 1, according to RTL Nieuws

Are you testing negative? It'd be slightly odd if you still have active Covid so you may well have some sort of post-viral syndrome going on. Worth getting out for a PCR and then seeing your doctor if it comes back negative. If it's positive you're just still fighting the virus so it's normal immune response taking a bit longer than usual. Get a PCR though as a LF negative is far from conclusive.
The fatigue and temperature spikes could easily be postviral (immune system doing weird stuff even though there's no live Covid in your system any more).
A few years back I had some weird virus and then in the aftermath, after being fine all through the day every day, I was getting a temp spike (big one, like 39.5 degrees+) every single night at around 1am - 4am. My skin was actually boiling hot to the touch and I couldn't sleep through it. It went on for well over a month, ****ing horrible.
A friend of mine at Uni also got increased fatigue after glandular fever that lasted nearly 8 months :umm2:.
As for the sense of smell/taste thing, unfortunately I've known a few people who got that with Covid and it didn't fully return for about 3 or 4 months ... so you might just have a bit of a wait with that.

My intrigue got the better of me after reading this post .. and I did a LF test ...
I just tested negative so that’s hopeful .
I think it follows that it is just the immune system .. the sweats have been getting less frequent each day and nothing so far today .

if you tested negative and test negative again tomorrow, you are on the mend. That's the most important thing. You may need to slow down because you get tired easily for a while, but you will be over the worst of it

Hi
After 6 days in bed I’ve had a couple of better days .. still sleeping an awful lot then spending the rest of the day shattered on the couch though .. still having intermittent hot / cold sweats as well .
I can’t concentrate on anything for long at all - just too tiring - sounds weird I know .
I lost my sense of smell an day 6 , not returned as yet .
I’ve pencilled in a to return to work next Monday but I’ve got to make a lot of progress over the next days - a can’t risk going back then having a relapse .

The fatigue and temperature spikes could easily be postviral (immune system doing weird stuff even though there's no live Covid in your system any more).

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/26/restaurants-museums-reopen-lockdown-measures-relax
Netherlands: Restaurants, museums reopen as lockdown measures relax
Today everything in the Netherlands is allowed to open again, under certain conditions. Restaurants and bars are permitted to receive guests again, as can theaters, museums, casinos, zoos, and amusement parks. Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Ernst Kuipers announced the relaxation of the coronavirus restrictions in a press conference on Tuesday.
Opening times of 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. apply for all non-essential businesses. Coronavirus access passes are mandatory for everyone aged 13 and older in the catering industry, theaters and concert halls, museums, indoor sports locations, cinemas, zoos, amusement parks, saunas, and casinos. People must also wear a face mask on public transport and in public indoor spaces like shops and museums. For cinemas, restaurants, and theaters, visitors can remove their masks once seated.
The announcement that movie cinemas would reopen again sparked a run on tickets on Tuesday evening. In some cases, people were in a digital queue for over 40 minutes, with thousands of people trying to buy a movie ticket. The major cinema chains' sites were easily accessible again on Wednesday morning. People could buy tickets at large operators like Pathe and Vue without waiting in a digital queue.
People especially scrambled to buy tickets for big blockbusters like Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matix Resurrections. The umbrella organization for cinemas said that it was happy that the public was finding their way back to the theaters again after the lockdown.
World of Dinos - the largest traveling dinosaur expo in Europe - will open again in De Kromhouthal in Amsterdam due to the relaxed coronavirus measures. The expo will be open from February 5 to 27. "There was an immediate rush for tickets after last night's press conference. Reservations are made en masse. The public is clearly looking forward to it again," said spokesperson Mike Leegwater.
For schools, only pupils who have symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19 have to stay home. The rest of the class can go to school. Pupils are advised to do a Covid-19 test at home twice a week.
Kuipers also relaxed the quarantine rules for essential workers, he said in a letter to parliament. Essential workers, like waste collectors and healthcare workers, don't have to quarantine after contact with an infected person if they don't have symptoms and if their employer approved them coming into work.
The Cabinet assumes that the relaxations will lead to a spike in the number of coronavirus infections. Rutte and Kuipers, therefore, stressed that people should keep adhering to the basic rules - maintain social distancing, wash their hands regularly, keep rooms well ventilated, and get tested if they have symptoms.

Netherlands: Cabinet discussing Covid testing everyone, vaccinated or not, to enter nightclubs
The Cabinet will talk with the nightlife industry to see whether they could be opened with the 1G coronavirus access policy, Minister Ernst Kuipers of Public Health promised during a parliamentary debate on the coronavirus. PvdA MP Attje Kuiken asked whether the sector might reopen if all visitors, vaccinated or not, are tested for Covid-19 before entering. Though she added that this solution is "not ideal."
Currently, people who visit a catering establishment have to show a coronavirus access pass based on the 3G system. They must show they have been vaccinated against, recovered from, or tested negative for Covid-19. Parliament also discusses the 2G policy, which only allows access to vaccinated or recovered people. In 1G, everyone must test negative.
Earlier in the coronavirus debate, parliamentarians also discussed the possibility of testing people in many more places to reopen society further. The Cabinet believes that extensive use of coronavirus tests is not possible because there is insufficient testing capacity for this in a "period when things are already going wrong in all kinds of places," said Kuipers. But he promised to talk with the nightlife sector after Kuiken pointed out that the sector has been unable to operate for two years.

Netherlands: Travelers with Covid boosters can soon skip Dutch quarantine; Some may need extra jab to visit Germany
Travelers from very high-risk areas who have had a booster shot will no longer have to quarantine upon arrival in the Netherlands from next week Wednesday, the Cabinet informed parliament. Netherlands residents who got the Jannsen vaccine against Covid-19 may have to get an extra booster shot if they want to go to Germany, Health Minister Ernst Kuipers said.
Travelers from very high-risk countries currently have to quarantine for 10 days after arriving in the Netherlands. Almost two weeks ago, the Cabinet announced that people in the Netherlands who had a booster shot at least a week ago no longer have to quarantine after contact with an infected person, provided they have no symptoms. The same rules will apply to travelers from very high-risk countries from February 2.
Over 30 countries are territories are considered very high-risk due to the coronavirus situation there. These include the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, and countries in southern Africa.
Minister Kuipers will ask the Health Council whether people who received the Janssen vaccine can get an extra booster so that they are welcome in Germany. The Janssen vaccine requires only one dose to be fully vaccinated. But in Germany, one Janssen shot and a booster is not enough for a coronavirus access pass. Germany requires a third vaccination for this.
Kuipers called it a shame that Germany made a different assessment than the rest of the EU member states on this matter. "Unfortunately, we can't change that."
CDA parliamentarian Joba van den Berg expected there had already been "high-level" consultations between Germany and the Netherlands. She hopes that the extra booster shot will offer a solution "if it can be done responsibly," because a solution is badly needed. Five Dutch provinces border the country. "We are so dependent on Germany."
Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who got the Janssen vaccine, seemed to only realize during the coronavirus debate that he can no longer go to Germany. "But we're going to talk about that," he told Kuipers.

EMA approves Pfizer/BioNTech anti-covid pill to be used in the EU
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Thursday it had approved Pfizer's anti-COVID-19 pill Paxlovid, becoming the first orally administered antiviral drug authorised for use in the European Union.
"The EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended the granting of a conditional marketing authorisation for the oral antiviral drug Paxlovid," the EU regulator said in a statement.
The EMA recommended "authorising Paxlovid for the treatment of COVID-19 in adults who do not require supplementary oxygen and who are at increased risk of the disease becoming severe".
Antivirals work by reducing the ability of a virus to replicate itself, thereby curbing the disease.
They are eagerly awaited because they are easy to administer, and can simply be taken at home with a glass of water.
Pfizer said in December that Paxlovid reduced hospital admissions and deaths in at-risk people by up to 90 per cent when taken in the first few days after symptoms appear.
Reduced hospitalisations and COVID deaths
The EMA assessed data from a study involving COVID-19 patients showing that "treatment with Paxlovid significantly reduced hospitalisations or deaths in patients who had at least one underlying condition putting them at risk of severe COVID-19".
The majority of patients in the study were infected with the Delta variant, the EMA said, while noting that laboratory tests indicate that Paxlovid should remain effective against Omicron.
The Pfizer pill is a combination of a new molecule, PF-07321332, and the HIV antiviral Ritonavir, which are taken as separate tablets.
"The EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has concluded that the benefits of the medicine outweigh its risks for the approved use," and will now "send its recommendations to the European Commission for a rapid decision applicable in all EU Member States," the regulator said.
The approval process by the Commission usually takes a few hours or days.
"With the approval of Paxlovid this week, six anti-COVID drugs have been authorised as part of the EU's therapeutic strategy," European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides said in a statement.
The US, Canada, and Israel are among a handful of countries that have already given the new Pfizer treatment the green light.

Netherlands: Municipalities to give low income households free face masks, Covid self-tests
Municipalities will receive Covid-19 self-tests and face masks from the government next month to hand out to people with low incomes. About six tests and six masks will be available per person until May 1, the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and, Sports reported. Thirty municipalities with a low vaccination rate and a high number of infections will receive extra masks and tests.
The Ministry will provide 10 million face masks and 10 million self-tests for people with a low income until May 1. The municipalities with many infections and low vaccination coverage will get 5.5 million of each during that period. These can be used for a "neighborhood-oriented approach," aimed at neighborhoods where the situation is deemed most worrying. This includes neighborhoods in cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, but it mainly concerns less urban municipalities outside the Randstad, including Urk, Tholen, and Vaals.
The Outbreak Management Team recommended making self-tests free for everyone. Its most recent advice to the government recommended doing so on "behavioral" grounds. The idea is that this removes a barrier to getting tested for Covid-19 more often. Despite this, Health Minster Ernst Kuipers said on Wednesday that the Cabinet is not prepared to make free face masks and tests available to everyone. "We do not consider this a public facility."

Netherlands: Outbreak Team members and other experts call for long-term plan to tackle Covid
A group of members of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), scientists and administrators, wrote a joint advice on tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. In the article, the experts pushed for a long-term plan.
"From fighting a pandemic to living in an endemism" was the outcome of a discussion last week between virologist Marion Koopmans, ICU doctor Diederik Gommers and microbiologist Jan Kluytmans. They are all members of the OMT, which provides the government with advice on acute management of the pandemic. However, experts from other fields also took part in the meeting, such as sociology professor Tanja van der Lippe, Breda Mayor Paul Depla and director of the social and cultural planning office Kim Putters.
The experts proposed to set up a scientific transition team to look into a "structural approach" to the pandemic. Unlike in the OMT, ethicists, economists and communication scientists would also participate in the transition team. The experts would create four future scenarios. In the mildest scenario, the coronavirus has become comparable to a cold. In the worst-case scenario, a new and more harmful variant of the virus appears.
According to Koopmans in an online explanation, it will take time before the coronavirus will be part of the common winter viruses, such as the flu virus. "With structural adjustments that the entire society participates in, you can ensure that the virus spreads less before the need is greatest. This prevents the need for additional drastic measures."

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/30/new-covid-record-set-75000-infections-hospital-total-6-week
Netherlands: New Covid record set with over 75,000 infections; Hospital total up 6% in a week
Some 75,199 people tested positive for Covid-19 between Saturday and Sunday morning, the RIVM said. That topped the previous single-day record, set on January 28, by about a thousand. With over half of people tested by the GGD receiving a positive diagnosis, the IT systems of the health services have remained overwhelmed, and a large amount of infections have not been tabulated.
A record-setting 52.2 percent of those tested by the GGD from January 22-28 were infected with the coronavirus, including 58.1 percent tested on Friday. The GGD tested a record high 1.02 million samples during that time, meaning the GGD alone diagnosed about 534 thousand new infections those days. A total of 1.2 million infections were revealed since January 1.
Roughly 131,000 infections diagnosed over the past 13 days have not yet been counted as a result of issues with the computer infrastructure, the RIVM said. That was 9,000 higher than on Saturday. It remains unclear how effective the organizations’ efforts have been. All that is known is that the problem has worsened every day for since the technical issue was first reported.
The seven day moving average increased to set another new record on Sunday. Using only the official raw data, the average reached 61,581. That was a third higher compared to a week earlier. If all of the missing data were added to the latest data, the average would be 80,300, about 75 percent higher than last Sunday.
It also is not clear which regions have been most affected by the missing data, and thus municipal reporting fluctuated greatly the past two weeks. The three cities with the most new infections in Sunday’s data were Utrecht (4,297), Amsterdam (3,078), and The Hague (2,904). Utrecht’s daily total has varied wildly between 500 and 4,300 during the past two weeks.
With hospitalizations linked to Covid-19 firmly on the rise, the Dutch hospital system was treating 1,154 people with the disease on Sunday afternoon. That increased by six percent in a week. A similar increase would put the total back at 1,220.
There were 945 people with the disease in regular care wards, the most since January 14. That figure rose by 29 in a day after accounting for new admissions, discharges and deaths.
At the same time, the number of intensive care patients continued to fall. There were 209 people in ICU beds with the disease, a net decrease of four. It was the lowest total in the acute care wards since October 28, over three months ago.
Hospitals admitted 150 patients with Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, ten of whom were sent directly to intensive care units. That pushed the seven-day moving average up five percent to 155 new patient admissions per day. The figure rose by a third since last Sunday, and was at its highest point since January 4.
The past week, 1,008 Covid-19 patients were admitted into regular care units, up from 756 the week prior. Eighty others were sent to an intensive care unit, up from 68.

Netherlands: Mayors meeting to discuss Carnival during Covid
The Security Council will discuss possible special coronavirus arrangements for the carnival period when meeting in Utrecht on Monday evening. After that, the mayors that head the 25 security regions will talk about a long-term vision for the coronavirus policy. Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz and Health Minister Ernst Kuipers will attend the meeting.
The mayors fear that social distancing, group formation on the streets, and closing times in the catering industry will be hard to enforce during the carnival days. Carnival celebrators celebrate arm in arm and in groups on the street. The parades have already been canceled almost everywhere, but carnival will definitely be celebrated in bars, the mayors think. Yesilgöz will discuss the situation with mayors Annemarie Penn-te Strake (Maastricht), Jack Mikkers (Den Bosch), and Hubert Bruls (Nijmegen).
According to the mayors, the Cabinet must make clear as soon as possible what is and is not allowed during the carnival days at the end of February. They also want to draw a line so that carnival celebrators do not flock to the municipality with the most freedom. Penn-te Strake represents Limburg, Mikkers is at the meeting on behalf of Noord-Brabant, and Bruls represents Gelderland-Zuid, the achterhoek, and other places where carnival is celebrated.
After the discussion about carnival, the other 22 mayors on the Security Council and Kuipers will join the meeting. The mayors have been pushing the Cabinet for a long-term vision on the coronavirus measures for some time. They want society to run as normally as possible despite coronavirus infections. They argue that society must learn to live with the coronavirus without being locked down every time. The Security Council favors the wide use of coronavirus access passes.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/01/carnival-cant-banned-mayors-say-decision-two-weeks
Netherlands: Carnival can't be banned, mayors say; Decision in two weeks
Carnival cannot be banned. Especially because the catering industry is open, said mayor Hubert Bruls of Nijmegen before meeting with Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz about it. "Carnival has many faces. People gather at home or on the street, and you don't need a permit for that," he said. The mayors and Minister will meet again in two weeks to decide how carnival will be celebrated. "It is too early to make a decision now," Yesilgöz said after the meeting.
The mayors worry that enforcing the coronavirus rules will be difficult during carnival, especially social distancing. "It is a complicated situation," said Antoin Scholten of Venlo. "In an indoor location full of music, people with a beer in hand do not stay 1.5 meters apart in their place," said Bruls. The mayors are still looking at the possibilities and impossibilities. They at least want to regulate the flow into cafes and bars. "We must try to discourage the large influx," said Bruls, also the head of the Security Council.
Annemarie Penn te Stake of Maastricht said that she would "do her best," but she "cannot live up to the coronavirus measures. "We'll walk around, speak to and give warnings, but I will not send riot police to the Vrijthof if it is full of people." She mainly hopes that the number of infections will have decreased drastically by February 15 so that more will be possible.
We have to be creative," said Jack Mikkers of Den Bosch. His colleague John Jorritsma holds his breath. "I'm afraid this year will be a disappointment for everyone who has a carnival heart.
The mayors and Yesilgöz will meet again in two weeks to discuss what Carnival will look like. "Carnival is here, I understand. Now we have to see how that can be celebrated under the applicable coronavirus measures. One thing is clear: it will not be as they are used to. Unfortunately, people also have to make sacrifices," the Minister said.
The mayors will get together various scenarios in consultation with the carnival associations and local entrepreneurs in the coming weeks. "The burning issue is the 1.5 meters. How should you deal with this?" Bruls wondered aloud. "Will there be an exemption? Will the mayors tolerate it? Or will it become stricter because the infection figures are rising?" Carnival cannot be a staged event, he said. "That will not work."
The mayors are also looking at regulating excessive traffic to squares and bars and discouraging carnival tourism. The intention is not that people flock to the south because they feel like a party. The folk festival attracts a large crowd from its own region alone.
They will make joint agreements with minor differences. "There are many variations of carnival in the country," explained Bruls. Limburg, Noord-Brabant, and the east of the country all have their own customs.
According to Mikkers, one thing is certain: the country is still in a crisis. "We have to celebrate carnival this year with reflection."

Netherlands: Half a million Covid access passes invalid from Friday
About 500,000 Netherlands residents will no longer have a green tick on their coronavirus access pass from Friday, Health Minister Ernst Kuipers said. They haven't had a booster shot yet, and the validity period of their Covid-19 vaccination certificate is coming to an end.
From this month, vaccination certificates are only valid for 270 days - in line with the European travel passes. The Ministry of Public Health calculated that "up to 540,000" people's access passes will expire on Friday based on how many people had their vaccinations over 270 days ago, the number of booster shots administered, and the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19, Kuipers wrote on Monday in response to parliamentary questions.
Kuipers expects that the shorter validity period of access passes will encourage more people to get the booster shot. "The GGDs have sufficient capacity to give everyone in the Netherlands a booster shot," he said.
The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament, will debate the extension of the temporary coronavirus law on Tuesday. This is the fourth time the law has been extended. Parliamentarians will also discuss the validity period of vaccination certificates and recovery certificates (180 days).

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/01/health-min-postpones-stricter-covid-access-policy-pending-research
Health Min. postpones stricter Covid access policy pending further research
Health Minister Ernst Kuipers asked parliament not to vote on the bill for a stricter coronavirus access policy that refuses unvaccinated people. He first wants to do further research to see in which circumstances the 2G access policy is a "proportional measure" to use. Kuipers made this appeal on the same day that coalition party ChristenUnie and opposition party GroenLinks pledged support for a proposal to scrap the 2G bill, NOS and Het Parool report.
The Netherlands currently works on a 3G access policy. It allows access to the catering sector, among other things, to people who have been vaccinated against, recently recovered from, or tested negative for Covid-19. The 2G policy only allows people vaccinated against or recently recovered from Covid-19. This means that unvaccinated people who didn't recently have Covid-19 won't be able to access the catering sector and the like.
The Cabinet considers the 2G policy a better way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. But the plan has been facing major opposition for months. A recent study on behalf of the Ministry of Public Health also found that the 2G policy won't be very effective against the high number of infections caused by the currently dominant Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
On Tuesday, parliament was set to vote on a motion filed by the SGP and parliamentarian Pieter Omtzigt to scrap the 2G bill. With ChristenUnie and GroenLinks' support, the motion would likely have had majority support. The other left-wing opposition party PvdA and GroenLinks often vote together. But even if the PvdA continued to support the 2G plan, there is currently no majority for it in the Senate. All other opposition parties are against it.
The ChristenUnie's attitude is a setback for the Cabinet, but not a surprise. CU parliamentarian Mirjam Bikker often spoke out against the 2G policy, suggesting a 1G policy instead, in which everyone - vaccinated or not - must test negative for Covid-19 to get an access pass.
In his weekly press conference on Friday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte acknowledged that the 2G policy would be less effective with the currently very high number of infections than lower infection rates. But he added that it would still have a dampening effect on the infection figures. And the Netherlands will need every method possible to lower the number of infections, especially because more measures have been relaxed, he said.
"We think that is an acceptable risk, but it does mean that you have to use the entire set of instruments," he said. Many of the Netherlands' neighbors are using the 2G policy and have fewer restrictions in place, he pointed out. In the Netherlands, people want to be as open as other countries and not use the 2G access policy, he said. "It cannot be and, and."

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/02/nightclubs-fed-covid-rules-plan-open-feb-12
Netherlands: Nightclubs fed up with Covid rules plan to open on Feb. 12
Nightclubs and discotheques plan to open their doors next Saturday. Two organizations representing the businesses, Nachtbelang and the Overleg Amsterdamse Clubs (OAC), say they are fed up that the Cabinet's plans to reopen society still have not given any consideration to nightlife companies. They want clubs across the country to open their doors on February 12.
"And not for one night, but just every night," said activist group De Nacht Staat Op, which translates as The Night Rises Up. "Everyone deserves the night to get to know themselves and to be themselves. If you don't see that, you're sleeping. That's why the night rises up: to shake the government and wake everyone up again," the group said in a video on the Instagram page.
According to a spokesperson for the campaign, the aim is to generate attention for the clubs again. "We notice that that is not happening at all, and that just hurts after being closed for two years."
The spokesperson said, "With this action we want to show ourselves how we can open safely again. It is certain that the target group of nightclubs is now visiting each other at various locations and parties, he stated. "We can do that much more safely with security guards, bar staff and a good ventilation system." The intention is that during the night of the February 12 promotion, the coronavirus access pass will be checked.
The sector will continue to consult with the Ministry of Economic Affairs on Monday. According to the ministry, this is about "collecting input to take with to the Cabinet's deliberation moment." According to a spokesperson, no decision will be made about the use of the 1G coronavirus pass policy in the nightlife sector, where all visitors are required to get a coronavirus test regardless of vaccination or recovery status.
Health Minister Ernst Kuipers said in the Tweede Kamer last week that he wanted to investigate whether the nightlife industry could open with the 1G policy. Currently, the 3G policy is in place, where the access pass is provided to anyone considered fully vaccinated against Covid-19, anyone who recently recovered from the coronavirus infection, or anyone who tests negative within 24 hours of entry.
According to the current rules, the entire hospitality industry must close its doors at 10 p.m. nightly. Assigned seating is also required

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/03/covid-access-pass-little-effect-pandemic-experts-say
Netherlands: Covid access pass having very little effect on pandemic, experts say
The effect of the 3G coronavirus access pass policy on the pandemic is currently so limited that it may as well be abolished, three experts said to NU.nl. Though they added that if the access policy is scrapped, other measures will have to take its place.
There are three levels of Covid-19 access policy commonly used in the world. The Netherlands works on the 3G policy, which allows access to things like restaurants to people who have been vaccinated against, recovered from, or tested negative for Covid-19. The term 3G comes from the three G's in Dutch words gevaccineerd (vaccinated), genezen (recovered), and getest (tested). 2G allows access to vaccinated and recovered people. With 1G everyone must test negative, vaccinated or not.
A recent study by TU Delft showed that the 2G and 3G access policies aren't very effective against the current high number of Covid-19 infections caused by the extra contagious Omicron variant. The 1G policy would be more effective, though there are practical problems with testing so many people every day. 2G and 3G are also more effective if the group not protected against Covid through vaccination or recovery is larger. In the past weeks, infections skyrocketed, resulting in more people building up natural protection.
Niek Mouter, the author of the TU Delft study, therefore believes that a discussion can be held on whether the access policy is still a proportionate measure. He doesn't want to comment on which measures should go and stay. "But the effect has become a lot smaller. I am happy that the discussion can now be held," he said to NU.nl.
Epidemiologists Patricia Bruijning and Frist Roosendaal told NU.nl that the 3G access policy is still dampening the spread of the coronavirus, but the effect is minimal. And that effect will become smaller in the coming weeks, Bruijning said. The Netherlands is still moving towards the peak of the current coronavirus wave, which means that even more people will become infected and build up protection. "Once you're at this stage, it doesn't add a whole lot more."
Roosendaal adds that 3G is aimed at slowing down the pandemic. "That doesn't work now because you can get the virus everywhere. It's a matter of mopping with the tap open. Vaccines also don't prevent all Omicron infections. So the mop you're using is also broken."
As the access policy is still having some effect, scrapping it would mean taking other measures to fill the gap it leaves, the epidemiologists said. For example, the catering establishments would have to close early for a longer period of time. And then, the question is whether it is fair to move away from the access policy. "You actually keep things away from people who were properly vaccinated. I find that a bit storage," Roosendaal said.
"You have to do it in steps and prioritize things," Bruijning said to the newspaper. "You have a toolbox to prevent the spread of the virus. Each measure individually does not do much, but together it does. At the next moment of consideration, the question is, what is your priority? Abandoning 3G? Or, for example, keeping bars open for longer?

Netherlands: No Covid passes expiring today; Brief grace period granted
The first green check marks on the CoronaCheck app will not expire on Friday but from Tuesday next week. The Ministry of Public Health announced that the first expiration dates are moved from February 4 to February 8.
It concerns over half a million people who received two vaccinations but no booster. They'll lose their coronavirus access pass, usually shown as a QR code on the government's CoronaCheck app. They can get tested if they still want to access locations where an access pass is required.
The Cabinet set the validity period for the Covid-19 vaccination certificate to align with the European travel passes, the Digital Corona Certificate (DCC). The vaccination certificate is valid for nine months, after which it expires if the person hasn't had a booster shot. The booster shot certificate does not have an expiry date yet. The recovery certificate is valid for six months.
Earlier this week, parliament was critical about the expiry of the vaccination certificates. But a motion to stop it did not receive majority support.

Dutch football to campaign for full stadiums this weekend
Dutch professional football will be campaigning for full stadiums this weekend using #stadionsvol. According to a joint statement by the football clubs, supporters, and other parties in professional football, allowing more spectators at matches can absolutely be done safely and responsibly, AD reports. The current coronavirus measures state that stadiums can only be filled to one-third capacity.
"Paid football is about playing in front of an audience. Playing football in front of empty or mostly empty stands is lacking in atmosphere, unnecessary, and costs a lot of money. 1/3 stadium occupancy is not a long-term solution," the statement read. "We don't want to go into a process that could take weeks or months. The Hague must issue a clear end date, after which we can build up to full(er) stadiums. We would at least like to receive everyone who has bought a season ticket as soon as possible."
According to Dutch football, previous field lab experiments showed that stadiums are not Covid-19 hotspots. "This is apparent from information from the GGD and is also logical: no one enters without their coronavirus access pass checked, and all spectators are in the open air. Research shows that there are hardly any infections outside."
They also launched a petition, which they plan to present to the government next Thursday. At 10:00 a.m. on Friday, it already had nearly 32,700 signatures.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/02/04/booster-shots-necessary-teens-health-council
Netherlands: Booster shots not necessary for teens: Health Council
The Health Council considers it unnecessary to offer all teenagers aged 12 to 17 a booster shot against Covid-19. A booster vaccination provides only "minimal health benefits" for this age group, according to the Health Council.
The Council also believes that an additional vaccination for adolescents will have "no significant effect" on the spread of the coronavirus among the population. While, in rare cases, the vaccination can lead to inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium. Also, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has not yet said anything about the benefits and risks of a booster shot for people under the age of 18.
The Council's advice also applies to teenagers with an increased risk of severe illness after a coronavirus infection. For example, people who are usually also invited for the flu shot and people with Down's syndrome.
The Health Council recommended "customization" for teenagers with a severe immune disorder. People age 12 and older with such a disorder, for whom two vaccine doses may not offer sufficient protection, were already able to get a third shot. "The re-eligibility of these adolescents and their relatives for additional vaccine doses will have to be assessed by their pediatricians," the Council said. Young people who want a booster shot to protect a vulnerable family member should also be able to receive an extra vaccination.
Some teenagers also want a booster shot because it is a requirement to travel without regular Covid-19 testing. It is not up to the Council to decide whether an extra would be available to this group, it said.
Former Health Minister Hugo de Jonge asked the Health Council for advice on booster shots for teenagers at the end of December. The vaccines the EMA so far approved for booster shots have only been approved for adults. De Jonge, therefore, also asked the Health Council whether the booster campaign for teens should start without approval.

And it should be given to those high risk and those who want it, rather than everyone getting pressured.
The amount of ads I hear pressuring for 'get your 12-15 year olds vaccinated' is insane.
I have had 4 texts in the past 10 days about getting my second jab. I only got the first one as I was ****ing sectioned at the time and they made me (so much for informed consent) Am not antivax but I kinda feel its unnecessary. Plus my brother who is a fit young man got really really ill off his vaccinations. Probably more ill than he would ever have been with actual covid. If not, then it was on par so he might aswell have just caught it and gained natural immunity instead.

The short answer is differences in immune response. The reasons for that could be either genetic or environmental - there's some anecdotal evidence for both with Covid. That doesn't necessarily mean those people have overall "better" immune systems per se, just that they have immune systems that are, for whatever reason, better geared towards Covid.
The answers to these things are still semi-mysteries in immunology I believe, when they're solved it'll probably lead to a huge leap forward in medical science.

This vaccine thing on bbc one is interesting.
I'd say that only accounts for maybe 1/4 of it.
The number of people in hospital 'with covid' as opposed to 'from covid' has been steadily growing for some time, think a couple of weeks ago about half of hospital admissions were with covid rather than from and that is probably true of deaths as well

All remaining Covid restrictions in England - including the legal rule to self-isolate - could end later this month, Boris Johnson has said.
Under the current rules, anyone who tests positive must self-isolate for at least five days.
The current restrictions are due to expire on 24 March.
But Mr Johnson told MPs he expected the last domestic rules would end early provided the positive trends in the data continue.
He said he intended to return after parliamentary recess - which is from 21 February - to outline the government's strategy for living with Covid.
