"A band of rain, sleet and snow will move south across northern and eastern Scotland later on Friday, then into the Borders and northeast England on Friday night. The snow will mainly affect high ground at first but will fall to lower levels on Friday night. 1-4 cm is likely at some lower levels but with 5-10 cm above 150 m, with drifting in the strong to gale force north or northwesterly winds. Indeed severe gales with gusts to 60 mph could bring a short period of blizzard conditions to the highest routes later Friday evening and overnight. The more persistent snow and strong winds will have cleared by Saturday morning but ice will be an additional hazard by then, particularly for higher level routes.
Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption."

then you would have hated my drive on monday night - cross country on wee rural roads that had frozen snow over them! By the time I got to my auction at 4 it was -1C and it was -4C when I left.
:fist: and now we have a gale warning for Friday
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Southwesterly gales or severe gales are expected to affect much of Scotland during the second half of Friday. The strongest winds will affect northern and western parts at first then reach the Central Belt and south later in the day.
Please be aware of difficult driving conditions with the risk of travel disruption on roads and to ferries. Winds may be strong enough to bring down branches or even uproot some trees due to saturated ground. A period of heavy rain will also affect much of Scotland, especially western areas.

'Thousands of homes across northern England and Scotland are under threat of flooding in the wake of Storm Desmond, with Cumbria police declaring a major incident.
The Met Office issued red weather warnings for several regions following heavy rainfall and high winds, with amber warnings in effect for areas including Yorkshire & Humber, North East England, Strathclyde, and Lothian and Borders. Parts of the Pennines are expecting gusts of up to 80mph on Saturday night.
Rainfall of 2.4in to 3.9in (60mm to 100mm) is likely in many amber zones, with some mountainous areas recording more than 5.9in (150mm) over a 30-hour period.'

2 periods of bailing out the patio yesterday. The second stint was 3-9pm. 6 hours straight, no break, just the odd glass of milk. In the rain and dark. With a plastic storage tub, bend down..fil..lift and walk 20 yards up the garden and bale. I cant just lift and throw as it runs back in as the ground was 100% saturated. I thought i was going to bloody collapse in the last hour :worry:, I went thru 2 complete changes of clothes hat and gloves. The small LTs were all worried. At 9 I came in to do their bedtimes and looked back out and the water was rising again but I had no more energy. I knew it would abate at midnight so I just taped up the door seams and waited with the mop and towels. At 1.30 it had stopped coming in and i had managed to keep it about 10 feet or so in an arc in the main room. I filled up 6 basins by then mopping and squeezing. I went to bed at 2 am (having been awake 24 hours). Today has been the clean up
I went to get some milk and a 5 mile journey was 25 miles as the big river had blocked the road and there was a landslip

Wind and rain records for Storm Desmond (so far as smaller stations have to report yet so the shap record will be broken)
Storm Desmond, the fourth named storm of the season, bought widespread heavy rain and storm force winds to areas of northern England and Scotland.
The rainfall experienced in many parts of the north west of the UK is thought to have been exceptional and early provisional rainfall statistics indicate many places have seen totals widely over 180 to 200 mm in the Lake District. It is thought very locally event totals may be in excess of 300 mm locally. The Met Office issued a Red ‘take action’ severe weather warning for rainfall yesterday, the first red warning since February 2014.

Snowed like a bastard here this morning, car was sliding about all over on way to town as the gritters and plough had not been thru. So I took the dog a walk for 40 mins in the snow.
Got back to car and went to get my keys and they are not there:omgno:
So thinking id dropped them on walk when throwing sticks I went back and retraced all my steps in the pouring snow to no avail. Had to call exmrslt and get her to get me so I could get home and get spare set (otherwise it would be a hearty 5 mile walk).
Get back to car again and raked around the the car in case id dropped them immediately and then looked in back seat and there they were  I had left them there as I has reached down to get the dogs lead!

Storm Frank is one of the most powerful Atlantic storms I have seen for many a year and its going to push lots of warm air into the artic and could result in us getting very cold weather as we head into Jan
this is one big fking storm, god knows what it would have done if it had tracked a little further east. as it is its a bastard.

Just under 70mm of rain in 12 hours, caused a lot of problems. Another night of no sleep and bailing out at 5am for 2 hours but the water won and i was flooded to a depth of about an inch, i pushed the water out the front bloody door - im exhausted.
Luckily i had everything up so nothing got wet (except the floorboards and walls (the will express the water in a few weeks)
This is a record Dec for me rainwise, well over 350mm

The month was not only the wettest December on record, but also the wettest calendar month overall since records* began in 1910
There has been a marked contrast in rainfall across the UK. It has been the wettest December on record for Scotland (351 mm), and for Wales (359 mm) and the 2nd wettest for Northern Ireland with 221 mm, just behind 1919 which recorded 224 mm.
North west England has also seen record breaking December rainfall, while for central and southern England it has been average.

"A complex area of low pressure will track into the cold air across the UK, with precipitation showing an increasing tendency to turn to snow in places. The heaviest snow is most likely in the overnight period leading to some very tricky conditions for the Thursday morning commute. The amber warning picks out where we currently expect the worst of the snow, but some smaller amounts of snow may be expected rather more widely, please refer to the related yellow warning."
