They were just discussing that on the News Channel. How North Carolina isn't equipped to deal with it like say, Chicago, because they don't often get much snow.

same as England. We had 3 inches of snow the other day and nothing happened, schools were open etc - if that was in Essex it would be "chaos"

Livia
22-01-2016, 05:32 PM
There is no evidence to support that other than the weather tends to go west to east in the north atlantic but there are way to many variables for it to work like that

Are you calling my Mum a liar???

I suppose I was just kind of hoping it was true.

Yeah, strange that... Essex has more 4 wheel drives per head of capita than anywhere else in the country. You'd think they'd be sorted...

Today's rain has made the big river rise very high and burst its banks. We have had quite a few major road closures today. Just drove into town and we have one long road approach and it was flooded in 2 parts with fast flowing water crossing the road and lots of hay and stuff on the road.

Its not very nice in the dark (no street lights or owt here) driving through floods that obliterate your windscreen at first and pull the car to the left due to the current. Still I made it and had the bonus of bumping into largest girl LT in the coop

You can see below the effect of altitude on weather. above 1000 feet or so this morning is thick snow making driving on our high roads difficult.

Named storm tonight affecting the North of the UK. Amber wind warnings so this will be a impactful event with powercuts and probably blocked roads etc

West to southwesterly gales are expected to develop widely across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England early on Friday. Winds are expected to widely gust 60-70 mph, possibly up to 80 mph along exposed coasts and over hills.

Be prepared for the likelihood of difficult driving conditions and disruption to travel, such as cancellation to ferry services and bridge closures. Some structural damage is also possible, as well as disruption to power supplies. Heavy rain and surface water will be additional hazards in places.

I had to nip to the garage first thing today, our local garage is 1000 feet above sea level high above the town so it was a wee bit snowy geting up there. I was able to take the hound up into the forest for a lovely walk, it was around -4C but there was little wind so not cold at all.

below is where longer term forecasting is right now :joker:

source Met Office:

UK Outlook for Tuesday 31 May 2016 to Tuesday 14 Jun 2016:

There remains considerable uncertainty regarding the conditions most likely to affect the UK through this period, but the most likely scenario is currently that changeable weather will affect at least the northwest of the UK. In this scenario we would expect to see showers or outbreaks of rain, interspersed by drier and brighter interludes in the northwest. Across the southeast there would be more in the way of dry and bright weather, with just occasional outbreaks of rain or showers. Temperatures are expected to be near or above average, with the possibility of the southeast becoming warm or very warm in more prolonged drier spells.

Amber again for today same area

"Another wave of thunderstorms breaking out across southeastern UK this afternoon and evening is likely to bring some thunderstorms into the London area. Whether these storms are as severe as those of last night is, at this stage, uncertain, but in view of storms being expected during the afternoon and evening impacts may be as widespread as those of last night and first thing this morning"

34C in Gravesend recorded

Crimson Dynamo
13-09-2016, 02:33 PM
"A very warm and humid air mass is in place across much of the UK, with conditions marginal for thunderstorm development this afternoon as temperatures rise. Northern England and southeast Scotland are currently judged the most likely area to see scattered thundery downpours but even here many places will have no more than light rain. However, where storms do form, there is a lot of moisture and energy available, with the risk of more than 30 mm of rain in around an hour, large hail and frequent lightning."

Rain will turn to snow in places later on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. This could bring accumulations of 4 to 8 cm across some hilly areas of northern England and Scotland, largely above 200-300 m, with as much as 15 cm possible above 300-400 m.

Overnight Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, as snow peters out over Scotland, there is the potential for snow to settle to low levels over parts of Yorkshire and down into the northeast Midlands, though with a good deal of uncertainty about this.

Nope, nothing in the next two weeks hence but from the 20th it looks like high pressure will again be in charge so that will mean frosts and lower temps so that is good for the xmas week in terms of travel.
