MISSING
The flu
Last seen in 2019
If you have any information of its whereabouts please let us know by using the following contact details
A small percentage yea but the suggestion is that all flu deaths are for some reason being logged as Covid deaths. Flu deaths might have been mistaken for Covid deaths way back when we didn’t have reliable testing, but since then, it would as you say only be a death caused by flu of someone who also had a positive Covid test within 28 days before dying. In all probability it will have happened at some point, but only a small number of times. Most flu deaths will not be mistakenly counted in Covid figures. There seems to be some confusion about why we’re “not hearing about flu deaths” but that’s just because they’re not logging flu deaths (or any other deaths) daily like they do with Covid deaths and, as it’s always been, you only get those stats for the full year, once they’ve been compiled.
Deaths from flu and other non-Covid-related pneumonia in England and Wales in 2020 were 20,523. This is largely consistent with pre-Covid years (approx 20,000 PA).
The data for 2021 will not be available until late 2022… they take a while to compile. But to say they don’t exist/aren’t being logged/seem to have stopped is nonsense, this data is easily and clearly available via ONS.
FWIW I think once the pandemic is “over” or more stable I think we will eventually get more accurate revised stats about Covid cases, deaths and fatality ratios. That will likely be beyond 2025. The data we get as “live updates” now is messy and unrefined… but as close to accurate as is possible without more in depth analysis.
Again you just selectively go through reading what you want to read and believing what you want to believe in this thread Alf, but maybe you'll see it now that it's been up twice.

So the UK are handling Covid 19 better than every other country yet Labour and the general media are trying to hound Boris out of office because some imbecile sent out a stupid email ...
##
The UK is the closest of any country in the northern hemisphere to exiting the Covid-19 pandemic, an expert has said.
Professor David Heymann, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), suggested in a Chatham House online briefing that the UK was seeing the disease become endemic.
He said: “In general, now, the countries that we know best in the northern hemisphere have varying stages of the pandemic.
“And probably, in the UK, it’s the closest to any country of being out of the pandemic if it isn’t already out of the pandemic and having the disease as endemic as the other four coronaviruses.”

the more people who spread omicron further, the better the chance delta might go away more ;) the more people who get omicron the better

yes, apparently there is a new childhood respiratory illness doing the rounds now that causes shortness of breath and that is down to low immunity due to lockdowns :skull:

I call BS on this, kids have been back in school for a good 18 months and all of the normal sniffles and sneezes went around last year. If anything last year was quite a "bad one" - loads of little bugs going around in early winter 2020 after the "long" homeschooling period.
Why would they have low immunity currently?
Schools haven't been "off" since February 2021... and even then it was just normal Xmas break extended by a month or so.
Unless they're claiming kids are mixing less outside of school? That doesn't ring true from what I've seen either.

Netherlands: dutch foreign minister Wopke Hoekstra tests positive for covid
The new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wopke Hoekstra, is infected with the coronavirus. Late on Wednesday evening, he said on Twitter that he "unfortunately received a positive test result." He will remain in quarantine for the time being, which he was already in after one of his children tested positive earlier in the day.
Hoekstra will be working from home for the next few days. "Fortunately, I have no symptoms," he said. The Minister was in Brussels on Tuesday. It was his first trip in his new position. He spoke there with the foreign chief of the European Union, Josep Borrel, and his Belgian counterpart Sophie Wilmes. According to Belgian rules, Borrel and Wilmes do not have to quarantine. In France, where the two will meet with other foreign ministers in Brest in the coming days, quarantine is not mandatory for Hoekstra's contacts.
Hoekstra was also supposed to visit the French city of Brest in the coming days, where he wanted to meet his colleagues from other European countries. Because he was previously Minister of Finance, he already knows most of his colleagues. Due to the positive Covid-19 test, Hoekstra won't travel to France.
One of his children got positive results from a Covid-19 self-test on Wednesday morning, but other family members tested negative, according to Hoekstra. He was already in quarantine as a precaution.

She has no symptoms at all so far but it’s early of course .
She got a phone call from her school .. one of her pupils had a runny nose today .. and tested positive tonight at home .. then all staff were advised to take a LF test .
So this variant clearly seems to spread as rapidly as we thought .
I just tested negative incidentally but I’ll test again in the morning before going to my school
Makes me wonder what chance I have now of avoiding it and I’m feeling dreadfully anxious :(

Literally all of my sons friends and football team have had it, but he hasn't. It seems quite indiscriminate who gets it, even in close contact.
Even if you do test positive you very well may have few symptoms. My friends mother in law has just got over it, she tested positive and the only symptom she had was a little headache....and she is 80 next month and asthmatic.

Netherlands todays numbers
35.521 new cases, 2112 more than yesterday
1.289 total hospitalisations 74 less than yesterday
108 new patients on nursing wards, 8 more new than yesterday
335 total on ICU's/ventilators, 26 less than yesterday 12 new patients on ICU's, same amount new as yesterday
16 new deaths 3 more than yesterday
--------------------------------------------
https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/14/shops-will-also-allowed-open-without-appointment-saturday-reports
Non-essential stores in the Netherlands will be allowed to open back up on Saturday with no appointments needed, sources told broadcaster NOS and the ANP newswire. Shopkeepers will be required to close their stores by 5 p.m., similar to rules during the evening lockdown late last year, but national rules will not be adjusted to allow hospitality entrepreneurs to open their doors again just yet.
Non-essential retailers were expected to be allowed to reopen on a limited basis by appointment only. The expectation is that they will still face restrictions on the number of visitors based on the amount of square meters of shopping space. According to ANP, customers will also be required to wear a mask while inside, and may be told to use hand sanitizer when entering a shop.
The change to the retail policy will be one of several announced at a press conference on Friday evening. Prime Minister Mark Rutte and new Health Minister Ernst Kuipers are expected to say that higher education students may return to classrooms, and the reopening of fitness centers and close-contact service providers, like hair salons.
Rutte and Kuipers discussed the issue with Cabinet ministers on Friday. During that meeting, they also decided not to reopen hospitality businesses just yet, ANP reported. The Cabinet will reassess that decision by January 24.
Should the coronavirus situation stay the same, or improve, bars, cafes, and restaurants will likely be allowed to reopen with some restrictions.

apparently what Dr John Campbell said in Netherlands 40% is still Delta so get rid of lockdown now pls
it shows that lockdowns are wrong in this recent scenario, spreading it more throughout the country, Omicron i mean to get rid of Delta is something what can work, if we look at UK, where Omicron is mainly the dominant variant, almost no sign of Delta anymore

We may all have Omicron . Youngest is very stuffed up/coughing since yesterday morning. Me and wife have been a little bit sniffly since yesterday but nothing really. Eldest is fine.
Of course it could just be a cold :joker:. Had to go on a 1hr 30 road trip (45 mins each way) for PCR's last night, nearby places were booked up until tomorrow :idc:.

They are literally dropping like flies in my son's class at school. 6 kids and both teachers off at the moment - we have been asked to test daily for a further 7 days now. Only a matter of time till its our turn I think (almost want to get it now and get it out of the way)

Why are they called Lateral Flow tests in the UK and Antigen tests here? [emoji848]
To put it simply – there is no difference between a rapid antigen and a lateral flow test! Rapid testing uses the well-established lateral flow technology to detect proteins or antigens that are present when a person is infected with COVID-19
So, no reason really

Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Ernst Kuipers used graphics for the first time during a coronavirus press conference. The new presentation style was received well overall yet experts said there is still room for improvement in delivering the message.
"You help understand information better with pictures. The only thing is that those pictures have to be synchronized with the argument and that was not the case," Professor of Health Communication Julia van Weert told NOS. Van Weert criticized a graphic showing a rapid increase in coronavirus infections in four countries. "The graphic begged the question: Why is everything closed here if it is going well in comparison?" Van Weert said.
Experts also commented on the number of slides used. "Kuipers spoke in a calmed and informed manner, but he wanted to say too much in a short time and used too many graphics," communication expert Lars Duursma said.
Van Weert said that Kuipers was easier to follow than his predecssor Hugo de Jonge. "It could be more comprehensible. But Kuipers is much less verbose than De Jonge," Van Weert said.
De Jonge posted a picture on Twitter of himself watching the press conference at home with his feet up, popcorn and an alcohol-free beer.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/14/full-list-dutch-coronavirus-restrictions-jan-15
full list of covid restrictions as of January 15th in NL
Although more than 200,000 people are now testing positive for coronavirus weekly in the Netherlands, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Ernst Kuipers announced a series of changes to the country’s lockdown policy which took effect four weeks ago. While many rules remain in place, restrictions related to retail, close contact professions, higher education, sports, and arts & culture participants were loosened up a bit.
The new rules take effect on January 15. No relief was given to hospitality business and cultural sector organizations, which will have to remain closed. However, the rules will be reevaluated after ten days.
“The difficult thing is that you are constantly faced with new scientific insights, such as with the face mask,” Rutte said. “We must always make adjustments and it is our task to discuss this with you again."
Rules regarding face masks were also updated, with masking now recommended in many indoor locations and crowded outdoor locations. The government wants people to use disposable masks instead of reusable cloth masks.
Quarantine rules were also cut regarding people who have received a Covid-19 booster vaccine, or those who tested positive for the coronavirus within the past eight weeks. Those people no longer have to quarantine after a close contact tests positive for the infection, unless symptoms of the disease begin to show. They are advised to visit the GGD for a PCR test five days after being in contact with someone who was infected with the virus.
"We can no longer get rid of the coronavirus. In the meantime, we know that there will be variant upon variant, which makes the boosters relevant,” Kuipers said. “I am happy that 90 percent of the over-sixty population has already gotten a booster, but I would advise everyone to get one. Then after a week you will be so well protected that the quarantine rules can be relaxed for you."
Retail, contact professions, hospitality and cultural organizations
Retailers may open their doors again, but must close every day by 5 p.m.
Close-contact professions, including hairdressers, beauty salons, massage practitioners, and sex workers may open their businesses, but close daily by 5 p.m.
Those inside a shop or other business must wear a face mask. Face masks should be disposable, and not reusable cloth masks or homemade masks.
Store capacity is limited based on store size. Appointments are not necessary to visit non-essential retailers.
Shop customers must keep 1.5 meters of distance from others.
All hospitality businesses are closed to the public. Ordering in advance for take-away is possible.
Cinemas, museums, theaters and concert halls must remain closed.
Essential shops, such as supermarkets and drugstores, are allowed to remain open until 8 p.m. A face mask obligation applies in these locations, and customers are limited to a maximum of one per 5 square meters of floor space.
Specific services like those of a notary or lawyer, mortgage advisor, and medical contact professions can continue to hold normal opening hours.
Weekly markets are allowed to remain open.
Face masks should be worn in busy outdoor areas.
Sports
Most sports activities indoors and outdoors, including group sports and team sports, are allowed to start up again.
Fitness centers and gyms are allowed to reopen.
Audiences are not allowed to attend sports competitions or trainings at any level.
Coronavirus access passes are required for any adult entering an indoor sports facility, with some exceptions.
Coronavirus access passes are required for any adult participating in outdoor spoorts when they move indoors, such as when they need to use a changing room or a toilet.
Sports competitions are limited to matches within a club, except for athletes and competitions at the highest levels.
Sports club canteens may only open for takeaway.
Sports club changing rooms, toilets and showers are allowed to open.
Sports participants do not need to keep a distance of 1.5 meters during competitions and practices if it is not possible.
Face masks should be worn in busy outdoor areas.
Education
In-person teaching at secondary vocational institutions, applied sciences universities, and research universities is allowed to start with a maximum of 75 people per classroom.
Primary school students in Groups Six, Seven, and Eight, secondary school students, vocational students, and higher education students should take a self-test twice weekly.
In higher education, a maximum group size of 75 people at 1.5 meters apart applies
Face masks should be worn by primary school students in Groups Six, Seven, and Eight, secondary school students, vocational students, and higher education students when they are not in the classroom.
Children under 12 years of age can be sent home from school if they have a mild cold, runny nose, or stuffed nose.
Face masks should be disposable, and not reusable cloth masks or homemade masks.
Face masks should be worn in busy outdoor areas.
Arts & Culture
Cultural activities indoors and outdoors are allowed without an audience.
Coronavirus access passes are required for any adult entering an arts & culture facility, such as rehearsal facilities, practice halls, and workshops.
There is a ban on all events.
Work, Home & Travel
Everyone in the Netherlands must work from home as much as possible. Those who have to go to work should stay 1.5 meters away from others.
Do not receive more than four people aged 13 or older per day at home. Do not visit more than one household per day.
Outside there is a maximum group size of four people over the age of 13 from different households.
Face masks are required in stores, indoor public places, busy outdoor public places, education from group 6 through higher education, on public transportation, at train and bus stations, and at airports.
Face masks should be worn in busy outdoor areas.
Face masks should be disposable, and not reusable cloth masks or homemade masks.
People not vaccinated against Covid-19, those vaccinated but who have not received a booster shot, and those who have not tested positive for coronavirus in the past eight weeks, are strongly advised to enter quarantine if a housemate or close contact tests positive for the coronavirus infection. This quarantine may be released with a negative PCR test on the fifth day of isolation.
People vaccinated against Covid-19 with a booster shot, and those who have tested positive for coronavirus in the past eight weeks, do not need to enter quarantine if a housemate or close contact tests positive for the coronavirus infection. They should schedule a PCR test on the fifth day of contact with that person.
People should limit their contacts when they leave the house.
Keep 1.5 meters apart from others wherever you go.
Visit no more than one other household per day.
Coronavirus self-tests should be used before visiting others or receiving visitors.
Children under the age of 12 should be kept separate from those over 70 years of age.
People aged 70 and older are urged to limit their contacts as much as possible, including with children. They should continue to keep 1.5 meters away from any person they contact.
If you have Covid-19 symptoms, stay at home, do not receive guests, and get tested as soon as possible.
Self-isolate if you test positive for coronavirus.
Ensure a good flow of fresh air indoors.
Wash your hands often and well.
Stay at home as much as possible. If you do go out, limit contact with others and stay 1.5 metres apart.
Funerals may be held with a maximum of 100 guests.
Travel abroad
There is no ban on foreign travel.
Follow all rules in effect at the destination.
Travel warnings and advisories can change quickly, which can affect rules for those returning to the Netherlands.

Well she’s doing a bit of sneezing ( and snoozing ) and the odd cough but she feels fine if a little tired .
I’ve just tested negative again even though she’s been testing positive since Thursday - her lower bars have been getting darker each day .
I honestly expected to get it by now to be honest as we are just carrying on as normal at home .
It’s all rather perplexing given I’m old , male , carrying a bit of timber .. working in a huge high school with 1300 young people most not bothering to wear masks .
(Incidentally 3 out of 7 staff have so far tested positive after spending just a day with that young pupil in school- last Thursday )

If I’ve got it ( even without symptoms) then I don’t want to go around spreading it around to possibly vulnerable folk . We also have a daughter and her days old baby to consider- it’s hard not seeing them at this time as well .

omicron has completely displaced delta in the uk. Additionally, omicron immunises you against delta. There are no new delta infections in the uk anymore
"Displaced" does not mean "gone".

that becomes less and less likely. Omicron gives you delta immunity, so delta just doesnt have anywhere to go

That’s interesting.., I haven’t heard anything about Omicron giving immunity against Delta .. I just thought it was infecting people before Delta could so Delta was falling away ..

Netherlands: health minister Ernst Kuipers has said we are on course for 100.000 cases a day
but that we had to get rid of the lockdown because of the UK ordering us around
In the Canadian province of Quebec, novel curbs are being introduced for people who haven't had a coronavirus vaccine.
From today, alcohol and cannabis stores will ask shoppers to show proof of vaccination to secure their purchases.
Health officials say they hope the measures will encourage more people to get their jabs.

You need to be more careful with wording Bots, I honestly thing semi-misinformation like this actually ends up bolstering and driving the skeptics more than anuthing else.
Omicron doesn't "give you immunity" to Delta or any other strain, it does increase immunity levels overall in the community which increases herd immunity which is of course vital to ever overcoming Covid, but saying "Getting Omicrom gives you Delta immunity" is at best a massive exaggeration. It makes it far less LIKELY that you'll get any Covid strain in the short term and increases your chances of any infection being mild in the medium-to-long term. Phrasing it like this makes it sounds like it gives full immunity, which only takes a few examples of people getting it twice for the skeptics to declare it all lies.

Yes Delta-Omicron I wonder if it's spreading.
Hard to track.
Soooooo ..... I've been feeling poorly throughout the night and just tested POSITIVE !!
Started with a sore throat and a headache yesterday and a bit of an annoying , throat clearing cough . The headache is a little better but now I've got a sore chesty cough , sore eyelids and feel proper rough .
I'm already experiencing worse symptoms than the wife has had - I expected to get a similarly easy ride if I got it .
Anyways I've just taken some paracetamol and I'm gonna try and sleep my way through this :(
Dammit !!!!!

If you have been exposed to Omicron the antibodies from Omicron gives you back protection against Delta - one of the reasons Delta has been replaced in the UK (now 97% Omicron in cases)

uP_p0a9pWCQYes I'm aware of that, but stating that it gives you immunity or makes you immune leads 1) people to believe that you can't catch Covid if you've had it before (false) and 2) those same people to declare it all nonsense as soon as they see someone get Covid twice.
It increases your protection against Covid, it bolsters your immune system against Covid, it does not "make you immune" to any strain of Covid.

His videos are good, he does a great job of explaining the science and stats in a simple form, and breaking down the complexities of the situation to make it accessible to a broad audience. There's no denying that.
He is NOT however the Gospel of Truth when it comes to Covid19. He's just putting the science in simpler English for people who are struggling to understand it.

A folk singer from the Czech Republic has died after deliberately catching Covid, her son has told the BBC.
Hana Horka, 57, was unvaccinated and had posted on social media that she was recovering after testing positive, but died two days later.
Her son, Jan Rek, said she got infected on purpose when he and his father had the virus, so she could get a recovery pass to access certain venues.
The Czech Republic reported a record number of cases on Wednesday.
Mr Rek and his father, who are both fully vaccinated, both caught Covid over Christmas. But he said his mother had decided not to stay away from them, preferring instead to expose herself to the virus.
"She should have isolated for a week because we tested positive. But she was with us the whole time," he said.
Proof of vaccination or recent infection from the virus is required in the Czech Republic to gain entry to many social and cultural venues, including cinemas, bars and cafes.

As an update.. I awoke yesterday morning feeling unwell ( tested negative) and took the day off work (started with a sore throat and headache in the night )
During the day I was completely exhausted , dull headache , sore throat and very hoarse voice ..
Now overnight I had spells of coughing my guts up and my lungs were slightly burning .. I was real scared - I tested positive at about 4am , took paracetamol then thankfully managed to get a bit of sleep .
Today my throat feels better although my voice is really gruff , thankfully the cough isn’t as bad ( but coughs are usually worse in the evenings ) so we shall see how that goes ..
I’ve spent most of the day in bed completely exhausted .. can’t concentrate on anything , no appetite , medium headache , jaw ache and real bad backache. Temperature running hot and cold all day which itself is horrible .
So if anyone tells you that it’s no worse than the common cold you have my permission to give them a slap !!
I’ve done a little research on the current symptoms and a sore throat is THE most common indicator by far ..

In all seriousness Zizu you want to keep an eye on upper back ache and jaw ache because those can be "heart symptoms". Could of course just be your chest and sinuses but worth being vigilant anyway, a lot of people don't know that about jaw ache.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/01/20/dutch-health-institute-pessimistic-omicron-director-says
Netherlands: The assumptions previously made by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) about the Omicron variant of the coronavirus were "too pessimistic," according to top infectious disease specialist Jaap van Dissel. This applies to the risk of hospitalization, for example. Two weeks ago, the institute estimated in model calculations that this was 40 percent lower than with the Delta variant, but that also seems too negative, Van Dissel acknowledged in a briefing to parliament.
The Omicron variant has supplanted the Delta variant, according to the RIVM. Omicron causes about 95 percent of new infections, said Van Dissel. "The picture is tilting," Van Dissel noted. He reiterated that Omicron is less likely to lead to hospitalization than Delta. Fewer people become so ill that they need intensive care, but to what extent, Van Dissel cannot say completely. "The percentages are continuously adjusted."
Based on the figures from countries ahead of the Netherlands regarding Omicron infections, Van Dissel can say that the variant still leads to considerable pressure on healthcare. Compared to other European countries, taking the number of inhabitants into account, there are a lot fewer coronavirus patients hospitalized in the Netherlands, NOS reports. In Denmark and Belgium, hospitalizations are twice as high proportionally and five times as high in the United Kingdom, Spain, and France.
Translated to the Dutch situation, those numbers would put "very significant" pressure on the healthcare system, Van Dissel said, according to NOS. "You wouldn't want those numbers in the Netherlands."
Van Dissel added that some of the coronavirus patients currently in Dutch hospitals have the Delta variant. They were infected earlier when the Delta variant was still dominant.
The Omicron variant is currently mainly circulating among younger people. The infection rates are much lower among people over 60, most of whom have had their booster shots. At the same time, the latest RIVM figures make clear that the booster shot also "does not offer 100 percent protection," Van Dissel said

the numbers who died from Covid alone, with no other health issue (co-morbidity) is 8 times lower in England and Wales than the Government led us to believe

In the beginning I do think that most people who lost their lives were vulnerable, elderly or suffering with other life limiting illnesses. There obviously has been deaths of previously healthy people but the majority will have had other issues I'm sure. The death figures were never very reliable once they lumped people in who had tested positive in the last 28 days but could have died when they were hit by a bus!

The average death age in 2021 from Covid was 82.5 years

The number that didn't have comorbidities is low-ish around 15-20,000 I think. It is worth noting however that if someone is over 70, it's VERY likely that they have at least one comorbidity, and comorbidities are not necessarily "the scary stuff" like heart disease or cancer. Extremely common, mangeable ailments in the over-70's like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (or low blood pressure) etc. are classed as comorbidities.

and that most did not die that got covid above 70 and 80
co-morbs or not
not sure of the percentage but it must be in the 90s?

not sure of the percentage but it must be in the 90s?I think the case fatality rate is about 5% for over 75's, rising to over 20% for over 90's but that's not hugely unexpected, pretty much anything can kill you at 90.

[The Daily Telegraph reports that some headteachers
are insisting that pupils still wear face masks
in the classroom - despite the official government
guidance being changed.
It says more than 100 schools have written
to parents saying face coverings will continue.
Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi
said his department would contact schools
that were refusing to scrap masks.]

The world is going crazy ... our high school have now decided to overrule the government policy that you only need a LFD test as proof of Covid ... we now have to provide PCR test as well .
I have been too poorly to leave my bed , never mind the house , to get tested , so I have requested a postal PCR test but it was a complete ball ache to organise when my brain is frazzled
:(
They also advised us yesterday that Covid related sickness absences are going to be included in the staff absences data and the subsequent interviews .
The interviews are going to recommence next week ( after being suspended for nearly two years ) .
So much for their ongoing claim that Covid staff welfare is paramount ...
I’m already at my wits end wondering if I’m gonna get better or worse .. yesterday was my worst day so far ( day 3 ) .
PS
This is what our union ( Unison ) told us at the start of Covid .

Speak to your Union Zizu....that's what they are there for. If you are triple vaccinated and have followed protocol you shouldn't be penalised for picking this virus up.
Is your school an Academy or council run?

Sadly a flaming trust / academy ... we changed about 18 months ago .
It’s probably because I feel so low this that I’m probably overreacting ..
Having to get a PCR test felt as though they don’t trust us ... now the change in absence interviews feels unfair ..
I went over 18 months without a day off sick then I was poorly the day after my booster & flu jab .

Honestly requiring PCR confirmation seems (just bordering on) being fair enough, but including genuine Covid confirmed cases in absence management policies is ridiculous. It will encourage presenteeism (showing up to work whilst ill) and that's NEVER been a good thing, let alone in Covid times.
Just another example of why I'm so glad to work for a small ethical company now. Those "justify your absence" meetings are so patronising and demoralising. There's no need for it - as a manager you KNOW when a staff member is taking the piss and that's the only time a meeting is warranted.

I've been lucky too. I haven't had a sick day in over 10 years and now I'm stuck at home with Covid I assumed it would blemish my record but my company have confirmed it won't be recorded as sickness and I offered to work from home but they told me to just relax and wait till I test negative.
In the 20 + years I've worked there I've only had 6 sick days so they know I'm not taking the piss.
An American Airlines plane bound for London from Miami has had to turn around because a passenger refused to wear a face mask, the airline has said.
American Airlines Flight AAL38 with 129 passengers on board returned to Miami where it was met by police, it said.
They escorted a woman in her 40s off the plane, reports say.
She has been placed on a list of people barred from flying with American Airlines, pending further investigation, the airline said.
The Wednesday flight turned around less than an hour into its journey, according to tracking service FlightAware.
"American Airlines flight 38 with service from Miami (MIA) to London returned to MIA due to a disruptive customer refusing to comply with the federal mask requirement," the airline said.
Passengers on the flight to London Heathrow were re-booked on to another flight for Thursday.
"Everyone was shocked," one passenger told CBS station WFOR-TV after getting off the Wednesday flight.
Another passenger said she was disappointed.
"They wouldn't really say anything, and I don't believe they told the flight attendants anything either because they said all they could say was there was an extreme incident with a passenger and they had to turn around," she told the station.
Airlines reported nearly 6,000 incidents involving unruly passengers last year and 151 in the first two weeks of this year, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Most of them involved passengers who refused to wear masks.
