I thought the Oxford vaccine wasn't effective on the newer strains? Not many tests have been done although I heard that preliminary testing (on the SA strain which is the one that was causing vaccine worries) is actually quite encouraging.
The issue isn't really whether or not the vaccine will work at this point... It's that the rate in London is so high now that it will have spread like wildfire LONG before a decent proportion of people have been vaccinated... And those strains are now spreading globally.
Honearly there's a very real risk that the vaccines have simply come too late to stop full spread throughout the population.

Been actively trying to avoid this for a while tbh. It appears as though*, the deal we decided on last minute (as Macron and Boris stared willywaving at each other over the Dover situation, seemingly, and Boris lost?) is way worse than any previous deals spoken about, for us anyway? How surprising and not at all what many said would happen. I was in the 'any deal is better than no deal' camp for a while, but really, if its all concessions and no benefit as it seems to be, is the deal really worth it?! We were grabbed by the balls though really, and I will always be of the opinion that the 'hold ups' were more a show of power, than anything to do with the 'new' strain of covid, that had been known about since September..and the power show, made Boris piss himself. In short.
*primarily from reading ranty statuses, and blog posts and stuff though, in fairness!

This deal is terrible, but it's still better than no-deal. This was always the problem with the fools gold of brexit and the claims made. This isn't considerably worse than Mays deal, it's just that that the lies and fake promises have finally met with reality. When people were told they didn't understand what they were actually voting for, it was called elitism and project fear.
The EU just looked after their members interests, they didn't try and bully us or anything like that. Boris screwed the pooch by not negotiating and then making the agreement last minute.
The truth and harsh reality, is that we already had sovereignty and we had the best deal available by being n the EU. Brexit was just the wealthy using nationalism to protect their tax avoidance and to redirect money to them and their friends. Now the government will soon be blaming brexiteers for this deal, the same way they are blaming us for their covid failures.

The denial of May's deals, for the most part, was just pageantry to aid Boris' succession. The deal we got does not look to be an improvement over May's but it's accepted out of necessity and because the Tories got the leader they wanted. May was only there to get the brunt of the blame so Boris could ride in on a gold painted horse and look like the hero we needed to the gullible.

Do you also know what the benefits are for each householder in the uk are equal to? Up to £1.30 per year. Not a minimum of, but up to.
I keep telling you all this is absolute nonsense, but you keep believing the liars and crooks, regardless of how many times they keep lying to you.

Can you explain how the meat we will eat will be of a lower standard?
Yeah, of course. It comes down to maximum farming levels. So for example, what we currently have over here would be a maximum level of x cows in a heard (I'm not sure of the exact numbers, and can't be arsed to look it up but I think it's under 1k), whereas in Australia, their farms would have around 30k cows.
So it's basically similar to the old battery farming techniques where they pack them in, pump them with drugs, and because they're dealing in such huge numbers, they can produce cheaper meat. Those standards wouldn't have been allowed in the EU.

He's a liar. This was our oven ready deal.
…this is just heartbreaking…he’s such a deceiver…
Brussels has insisted it will not renegotiate the EU’s Brexit deal with the UK after London inflamed tensions by launching a bold push to overhaul trading rules for Northern Ireland.
The renewed conflict came as it emerged British prime minister Boris Johnson wanted to renegotiate the so-called Northern Ireland protocol agreed with Brussels in 2019, even though it has only been in force since the beginning of the year.
Lord David Frost, Johnson’s Brexit minister, published a paper that proposed dismantling key parts of the protocol, which governs post-Brexit trade with Northern Ireland, including stripping the European Court of Justice of its role in policing it.
Most checks at Irish Sea ports on goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland would be replaced by a new system largely based on the honesty of traders, with spot checks behind the border.
Maros Sefcovic, European Commission vice-president in charge of relations with the UK, said Brussels “will not agree to a renegotiation of the protocol”. Weeks or months of diplomatic wrangling lie ahead.
The issue could also increase tensions between US president Joe Biden, who describes himself as Irish, and Johnson. Brendan Boyle,*a Democratic Congressman and member of the Irish caucus on Capitol Hill, said “the British government has tried to evade its responsibilities under the protocol”.
“Their latest statement and proposed changes just continues this trend and serves only to further destabilise Northern Ireland,” he said.
Frost insisted Britain wanted to make the protocol work more effectively, but left open the possibility of London suspending it if Brussels refuses to accede to the demands. “We cannot go on as we are,” he said.
The post-Brexit status of Northern Ireland was identified by Frost as “the main obstacle” to building a productive, new UK-EU relationship. He wants to settle the issue permanently by rewriting the Johnson Brexit deal.
Frost is looking to “freeze” the current situation regarding Northern Ireland pending a negotiation which he admits would require reopening the treaty signed by the prime minister as part of his Brexit deal.
That would include indefinitely extending “grace periods” — waivers on border checks at Irish Sea ports on items such as chilled meats and parcels — until a new settlement is reached.
The grace periods are due to expire at the end of September, meaning that London and Brussels have only a matter of weeks to settle their fundamental differences over the future of the protocol.
Frost also wants the EU to suspend legal action against the UK over the operation of the protocol so that any negotiations on a new deal could proceed in a less fraught atmosphere.
Under the protocol, all goods shipped from GB to NI must follow the EU’s rules for customs and agrifood products, resulting in checks on the Irish Sea. The Brexit deal sought to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

It's never been solely about the pingdemic, which is just exposing the problems of brexit. There's a reason everything is being blamed on the pingdemic...
the whole order fulfilment process is fine tuned to be the most cost effective, and when something disrupts that whether it be the pindemic are basic lack of staff/drivers then it soon goes to rat. We are suffering both at the moment making it dodgy at best

the driver shortage is a perfect storm of 25,000 delayed tests, some exam current drivers have to do which costs them 5 days of work as well as 400.00 and Brexit

Weeell... maybe, you can't make assumptions about what higher voter turnout would have resulted in, plenty of people who didn't bother to go out and vote would have voted Leave if their mates were voting Leave. There will have been many fully drinking the kool-aid from their couch, but not actually fussed enough about it to go and vote on the day.

The comment is only made in reference to me, as the same comment has been made throughout numerous threads recently. I didn't vote in the referendum and yet I'm an outspoken critic of it.

there were an awful lot of young folk who didnt bother to vote in the ref. The majority of them supported remain, so it's not inconceivable that the result could have been changed by their vote
Anyway, my opinion is that nothing is forever, and we will be back in the customs union under a different name within 10 years

Ian Botham, the former England cricketer known for legendary clashes with Australia, has been appointed UK government trade envoy to the country.
Lord Botham, along with Baroness Hoey and several MPs, have been made trade envoys to boost British business interests around the world.
International trade secretary Liz Truss tweeted the former all-rounder would "bat for UK business down under".
Lord Botham reportedly once said "Aussies are big and empty - just like the country", whereas he was affectionately known in the country as Guy the Gorilla.
He is one of 10 new trade envoys.
Baroness Hoey has been appointed to Ghana, while Stephen Timms MP has been assigned to Switzerland and Lichtenstein, and Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP to Cameroon, in addition to his role as trade envoy to Egypt.
David Mundell MP has been appointed to New Zealand, Mark Eastwood MP to Pakistan, Marco Longhi MP to Brazil and Conor Burns MP to Canada .
Lord Walney has been assigned to Tanzania, while Felicity Buchan MP has been appointed to Iceland and Norway.

Botham Nov 2020: I “will be at Westminster more often when we get back to normal, especially when they are debating something I know about – like sport or the countryside. Not much point if it’s a trade deal with Japan”
He's in the HoL because he's loyal to Boris. Botham himself said he only knows about sports and the countryside so he's debunked your post with his own words
Just to be clear for future reference, are you saying that only current sportspeople should stick to sports, but once you've retired you can speak openly and expertly about all manner of things?

we werent able to train new hgv drivers during the pandemic, we lost a lot of drivers over brexit. The combined effect has been worse than either on their own, but the drop in drivers happened because of brexit, so it was the main cause, that cannot be denied, no matter how hard people try to deflect

It is Brexit in the main re the hgv drivers.
Without Brexit, all the hgv drivers needed were in place, so no need to have any positions to fill or in fact to train drivers either, that is for who, and if, any wanted to be trained to do it.
