If I had to guess at a conclusion, Russia will eventually accept terms and withdraw having gained territory and guarantees of no NATO or western military presence of any kind in Ukraine. However, I think he wants to do as much damage as possible before then. He wants to completely flatten major cities as a warning about what Russia is willing to do to neighbouring countries if they cross them. Massive damage to civilian lives and infrastructure as a deterrent.

To use an allegory - it's like a loanshark taking the money someone owes them and accepting they've paid up, but breaking their legs anyway as a warning not to **** around next time. He wants to come out of it seeming big and scary, in other words.

At first I thought the longer the war went on the worse it would be for Russia but there is a danger that they keep up the invasion for so long that the world eventually becomes a bit desensitised to the war and the pressure on Russia subsides. It stops dominating the news, the West reaches the limits of what they're prepared to do, and Russia consolidates the territory it occupies while keeping forces closes to Kyiv even if it doesn't manage to topple it. Then months later Ukraine eventually feel they have no other option but to accept a peace deal which recognises Crime as Russian along with all of the Donbass and enough of the South that they have a land bridge to Crimea

A US journalist working in Ukraine has been shot dead in the town of Irpin, outside Kyiv, police say.

Brent Renaud, 50, was a journalist and filmmaker who had previously worked for the New York Times.

Kyiv's police chief Andriy Nebytov said he had been targeted by Russian soldiers. Two other journalists were injured and taken to hospital.

It is the first reported death of a foreign journalist covering the war in Ukraine.

One of the injured journalists, Juan Arredondo, told an Italian reporter that he was with Brent Renaud when they came under fire.

"We were across one of the first bridges in Irpin, going to film other refugees leaving, and we got into a car", he said in a video published on Twitter.

"Somebody offered to take us to the other bridge and we crossed a checkpoint, and they start shooting at us. So the driver turned around, and they kept shooting; there's two of us. My friend is Brent Renaud, and he's been shot and left behind... I saw him being shot in the neck."

Photographs are circulating online showing a press ID for Renaud that was issued by the New York Times.

In a statement, the newspaper said it was "deeply saddened" to hear of Renaud's death but that he had not been working for the newspaper in Ukraine.

Renaud last worked for the publication in 2015, the Times said, and the press ID he was wearing in Ukraine had been issued years ago.

NBC News said their "thoughts and prayers" were with Renaud's family and praised the "important contributions" he made to NBC News reports, adding that he was not working for them in Ukraine.

The problem will be when people inevitably eventually want their space back but the people they've taken in have nowhere to go. There's been absolutely no timeframe at all attached to this (obviously there can't be) and I think the worry is people thinking it's offering emergency housing for a few months but those few months may come to an end with no answers.

DUSSELDORF, Germany
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a bill introducing a prison sentence of up to 15 years for those spreading information that goes against the Russian government’s narrative on the war in Ukraine.

The bill criminalizing the intentional spreading of what Russia deems to be “fake” reports about the war was quickly rubber-stamped by both houses of the Kremlin-controlled parliament earlier in the day.

Russian authorities have repeatedly decried reports of Russian military setbacks or civilian deaths in Ukraine as “fake” news. State media outlets refer to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation” rather than a “war” or an “invasion.”

Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the lower house of Russian parliament, said the new measure "will force those who lied and made statements discrediting our armed forces to bear very grave punishment.”

“I want everyone to understand, and for society to understand, that we are doing this to protect our soldiers and officers, and to protect the truth,” he added.

The new law envisages sentences of up to three years or fines for spreading what authorities deem to be false news about the military, but the maximum punishment rises to 15 years for cases deemed to have led to “severe consequences.”

Also Friday, the state communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, blocked Facebook and five foreign media organizations based abroad which publish news in Russian in a sweeping action to establish even tighter controls over the information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine reaching ordinary Russians.

Roskomnadzor, blocked Facebook, citing its alleged “discrimination” of the Russian media and state information resources. The agency said in a statement that the restrictions introduced by Facebook owner Meta on the Russian news channel RT and other state-controlled media violate the Russian law.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said in a tweet in response to Russia’s action that “millions of ordinary Russians will find themselves cut off from reliable information, deprived of their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends and silenced from speaking out.”

“We will continue to do everything we can to restore our services so they remain available to people to safely and securely express themselves and organize for action,” Clegg added.

The Russian media blocks also affected five foreign media organizations based abroad which publish news in Russian. They included the BBC, the U.S. government-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and Latvia-based website Meduza. Together, they are among the most influential and often critical foreign media publishing in Russian.

What an outcome, neutrality in this instance seems the best option for Ukraine. They won't succumb to Russia but neither can they rely on the west to fully accept them, I think that was what the issue was with the no fly zone. I was Zelenskys way of saying protect us with this and Ukraine will join NATO and that didn't happen.
With the tension between east and west so great at the moment some neutral space is needed.

I really hope these peace discussions are able to end this soon.

I mean the obvious answer there is that these 3 are all ex-US-presidents. I couldn't tell you WHY he hasn't listed any ex-US-presidents but it would at least explain the question of "Why Hilary but not Bill". If Trump and Obama aren't on there it makes sense that Bill Clinton isn't either.

Realistically it's now very clear that Ukraine in NATO would make Ukraine a perpetual battleground... it would all but guarantee that if WW3 does ever kick off, Ukraine would be absolutely obliterated as one of the first major battlegrounds. No nation wants that role.

I think something else that massively complicates this is that a lot of Russians, especially from the West of Russia, see themselves as culturally European-ish as well. Especially in Urban areas. A lot of their entertainment media is quite westernised as well, I've watched a few Russian series that could easily be set in the US or any European country other than the language spoken. Putin (et al.) are quite aware of this increasing trend and that in itself is quite likely considered a cultural threat to Russia. If the population is largely westernised then all it takes is a regime change (once Putin is gone?) and you potentially have a very, very different-looking Russia. LOTS of vested interest in that not happening.

in the far east of russia, in vladivostok, their major trading partner is japan. I know japan isn't "western", but it has everything associated with western values. All the cars are japanese and they are all right hand drive :laugh: All the tech is the latest and greatest from japan. So culturally, it's just not like the rest of russia at all. Even more interestingly, that is where the russian navy hq is. Until 30-40 years ago, vladivostok was a closed city, completely isolated/protected from the rest of russia

There will have to be some way of guaranteeing that if Russia withdraws they won't just do this again in a few years time. Seems hard to make Nato a part of that guarantee though given one of the issues in the first place is their presence in the region

Hard to see how a compromise is achieved in Crimea and the Donbass as well, maybe they remain part of Ukraine for say the next five years and then they can hold referendums on their future which are organised and monitored by a body like the UN

In terms of the aims Russia has openly expressed, these terms would mean that they won, as they've maintained that the cause of the action taken was NATO encroachment. Which in all honesty a very large part of it is, no matter how many Star stories insist it's because Putin has gone mad with cancer pain or whatever.
