Ukrainian defenders have blown up several bridges
leading into the capital in an attempt to
slow the Russian advance
Yes it will take 90mins or so to build a temp bridge
that can take tanks.
Never go full Alf :smug:
Even more worrying, is that these UK bills aren't anything to do with covid, they're just doing them because they have the majority to ram them through. Ask pretty much anyone in the UK prior to the Ukraine invasion, and they would have all said Putin was a dictator ruling by fear etc, but exactly the same types of policies are being introduced here under cheers and flag waving. Europe is in for another dark couple of decades. The World would be a better place if they did go full Alf.
Even I haven't gone full Alf. I could give you my opinion of what I think is going on here, but I'm never going to, because it sounds so ridiculous that nobody would ever believe or accept it. I'll just continue to drop the odd hint every now and again, hopefully in comedic fashion.

That parallels are quite clear really - there has always been Russians heavily critical of Putin, but also Russians who idolize him, and underpinning it ... it being realistically simply not possible for him to be voted out democratically because the system is designed for that not to happen. In practice there's very little difference between a dictatorship built on fear and a single-party "democracy". I don't see any way out of the latter for the UK.

Just factually inaccurate, unfortunately. There is no left wing coalition with Putin or Russia. The allies of the Kremlin reside pretty much solely on the right. There is absolutely nothing communistic about Putins regime, and Putin even came out a few days ago to criticize Lenin. Sorry.
You don't have to be scared of Boris to at least comprehend that he's implementing Putinesque policies in the UK.

turkey leader Erdogan on Ukraine crisis
NATO should have taken a more determined step, Turkiye's president said on Friday, as the Russian military intervention in Ukraine unfolds.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the Western stance on the Russian attack on its neighbor, saying it still gives advices as it has offered "plenty of advice until today".
Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul, the president said: "The European Union, as well as all the other Western conceptions, unfortunately, have not taken a serious and resolute stance at the moment (in Ukraine)."
On Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's remarks that they were left to fight "alone," Erdogan said that the West's advice and failure to show a determined stance "does not comply with friendship or solidarity."
Earlier Friday, Zelenskyy said in a video message shared on social media: "This morning we are defending our state alone ... The world's most powerful forces are watching from afar."
Later in the day, NATO will hold a virtual meeting of heads of state and government of the alliance to discuss consequences of Russia's attack on Ukraine, with the Turkish president set to attend.
"It should not turn to be into a mere array of condemnation, NATO should be more determined," Erdogan said, referring to the NATO summit.
Defying threats of sanctions by the West, Moscow officially recognized Ukraine's regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states earlier this week, followed by the start of a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday.
Tensions started escalating late last year when Ukraine, the US and its allies accused Russia of amassing tens of thousands of troops on the border with Ukraine.
They claimed that Russia was preparing to invade its western neighbor, allegations that were consistently rejected by Moscow.

Erdogan making strong and valid points
NATO messed up big time, if they had the evidence like was said many times too, you'd think they go preparing for a invasion, and if you don't know when you don't have time to waste, which is what they did with trying to avoid this invasion with more talks, wasting time

Germany: very nice gesture to postpone a primetime show by 15 minutes
After a week's Corona break, Joachim Llambi is finally back in his regular seat on the "Let's Dance" jury. The 57-year-old juror is certain: "It's going to be great tonight." But as much as he is looking forward to the exciting hours of the live show, his thoughts are also on the frightening situation in Ukraine. "I find this very sad for everyone who is involved there and especially for our professional dancers, who have some relatives and friends in this region," says Llambi in the "Point 12" interview. However, the juror is sure that "Let's Dance" can also help in this difficult time. So why he is really looking forward to the evening, he explains above in the video.
Dancing should be in the foreground
A few hours before the live show, "Let's Dance" juror Joachim Llambi expresses his honest thoughts – and certainly from the soul of many fans: "It's a very depressing situation, you have to say that. We didn't expect all this in this form." But the 57-year-old is sure that the colorful distraction of "Let's Dance" can also help some in this difficult time – at least for a few hours: "I think we should continue in some form, that's what our dancers want too."
"Let's Dance" launch postponed by 15 minutes on February 25
How much the dance couples are happy about the return of the juror and for which celebrity the dream of the "Dancing Star" is dreamed up in the end, RTL will show on Friday, February 25 from 8:30 pm – and in parallel in the livestream on RTL+.

At around 18:00, Ukrainian State Border Guards announced that Snake Island had come under attack from Russian ships, during the first day of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[2][3] The cruiser Moskva and patrol ship Vasily Bykov were involved in the attack, using their deck guns.[4]
When the commander of the Russian cruiser instructed the Ukrainian soldiers stationed on the island to surrender, or else be fired upon, the reply was 'Go **** yourself' (Russian: 'иди нахуй' idi nahuj).[5][6]
At 22:00 (01:00 Moscow Time, UTC+2), the State Border Guard Service announced that Russian forces had captured the island following a naval and air bombardment that destroyed all infrastructure on the island.[7][8] Thirteen Ukrainian border guards, representing the entirety of the Ukrainian military presence on the island, were killed during the battle after refusing to surrender.[9][10] President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced they will all be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

I'mnot 100% on what's happening here - it looks like a missile is fired overhead but it looks like a second stream of smoke heading towards the houses at the same time - can't see where it originates? The video is a little confusing in all honesty.
The bang I think is actually the sonic boom from the fired missile rather than an explosion (the plane is flying at subsonic speeds, so when the missile is fired forwards it breaks the sound barrier).

I saw on the news yesterday that Russian State TV have played down the invasion of Ukraine - many Russians have not seen the extent of the firepower they have brought against their neighbours. I don't know how restricted the Russian population is with regards to external news sources but the footage the Russians had been shown on their TV news was very different to what we are seeing.

Yeah I said before, Russia aren't "cut off" from global news like China is and they will be well aware of the news online and on social media. However of course there will always be a large group of people who are more inclined to trust televised/printed state media than what they see online e.g. the number of people who take Fox / CNN (depending on leaning) as "the truth" and ignore all else. Many people, especially older generations, will trust what they're being shown on the TV news within Russia.

i've spent quite a bit of time in russia and anyone under 60 knows the games putin is playing. They aren't a people that trust anything easily.
Even in the last 5 years it has become very difficult to openly voice dissent. Justice is very harsh and it's not unusual for the police to get their batons out and beat people within an inch of their lives. It's very very difficult there

Ukraine seem to be fighting very hard, Russia hasn't really taken control of any big city yet and has suffered massive losses. They probably expected it all to be wrapped up by now
That's like being obsessed with a young lady who married into a dysfunctional family, whilst the old man was selling titles to Saudi's and the uncle was paying off people that he'd never even met.
What have they got to do with Russia/Ukraine?? They aren't politicians.
But a few corrections for you:
The young lady is actually a middle aged grifter and proven compulsive liar.
There is currently no evidence that the old man himself sold titles to the Saudis.
The Uncle was forced to make a pay off because the inevitable news about a court case for months on end would disrupt and detract from the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.
And as I said none of that is anything whatsoever to do with Russia/Ukraine….and none of it makes Corbyn any less a Russian sympathiser and a terrorist hugging, anti - semite scumbag….but as he is irrelevant now anyway I’ll not waste anymore time on him and leave you to your passionate Jeremy obsession. :fan:

Russia is a right wing endeavour - Corbyn is left wing and has no sympathies or allignment with a Putin regime, beyond not wanting war (how terrible). However, you may not remember this, and as another poster brought this up, it seems fair game, but during the poisoning scandal, NATO called an emergency summit to tackle Russia. Boris Johnson - who was home sec at the time, walked out of the conference, ditched his handlers, went to a Berlusconi partiy, where he hosted Russian oligarchs. The son of one of the attendees at that party was recently given a lifetime in the house of lords and collects his money from them to this day. So pray tell, who's the Russian sympathiser?

For the second night in a row, thousands of Georgians have turned out in the capital Tblisi to protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 to aid pro-Russia separatist forces. Experts have drawn many parallels between that conflict and the one currently unfurling in Ukraine.
Some members of the crowd - estimated at 30,000 - chanted slogans against the current Georgian government, after the ruling party said it would not join the Western sanctions on Russia.
“I want to state clearly and unambiguously, considering our national interests and interests of the people, Georgia does not plan to participate in the financial and economic sanctions, as this would only damage our country and populace more,” the country's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said earlier on Friday.
The protesters said the PM's move represented a cowardly abandonment of the Ukrainian people.
Massively surprised to see you and facts still having marital problems, but if I fell in love with my occupiers, I think that maybe that I would struggle to be coherent in a lot of instances, too.

They actually shot 2 down which can hold up to 150 troops each, most of the Kyiv citizens that stayed have been given guns and have been told to make petrol bombs something Russia wasn't expected and have been holding them off fine.

Honestly the best case scenario is some sort of peace treaty that says Russia commits no further acts of aggression, and Ukraine can try to become a NATO member but that there will be no NATO base anywhere near the Russian border, perhaps even create a DMZ.
My fear if Russia ends up being kicked out of Ukraine having discovered it cannot secure that birder with traditional military force, and Ukraine ends up with NATO bases close to Russia, is that Russia will very quickly start to rattle the nuclear sabre.
Russia's forces are obviously massive in comparison to Ukraine but its starting to look like they have severe supply line problems.
Also it seems a lot like a large percentage of Russia's equipment is dated. They do for example have a small number of advanced fighter jets BUT the bulk of their quoted 1500+ are old. Ukraine doesn't have many but from what I've read, they're flying F-35's, and basically anything but Russia's newest jets aren't a match for them, which I guess would be why Russia needs to take out air bases fast... They don't seem to be comparing well in the air. Reports of ONE Ukrainian F-35 shooting down 6 Russian fighter jets in one encounter.
The Ukrainian president was leading the front line against Russia, now that's what you call a leader and not one who cowards away.

He turned down an American offer to evacuate as well saying 'I need ammo not a ride'If he leaves it would cripple the Ukrainian morale and it would likely be over quite quickly. Still... Most would be long gone. Boris would have been across the Atlantic before the first bullet was fired.
Yeah I agree, you can't really ask citizens to stay and fight when the government leaves. Still amazed by how well he speaks and conducts himself, must be getting almost no sleep with a lot of the military action taking place at night and then having to give speeches and speak to other leaders in the day
The capital seems to have just about held up last night, the longer it goes on Putin will either have to come to the negotiating table or take some big risks to end things quickly..

The statements he comes out with are also pretty metal which I can only assume is entirely intentional - not only will it ramp up and inspire the Ukrainians, it's the sort of thing that will resonate with the Russian population too.

Interesting that Brazil is in the Yes column, there are economic implications there for Russia (there was interest from Brazil around nuclear energy) and it was reported that Putin was shaking hands with

Yes that's what keeps it a permanent stalemate. But they would still like to so when it comes down to it, they are sympathetic to things like the former Soviet Union and the China/Taiwan situation. Another reason why China abstains, of course. They can't condemn without condemning their own probable future actions. Although, they would argue, it's different as they insist Taiwan is not an independent country, and thus their presence couldn't be an "invasion". Which is why other countries should steer clear of arguing againt that IMO. China has been quite happy to let Taiwan exist as a self-governing entity so long as it isn't legitimised.

The International Committee of the Red Cross should remove the dead bodies of "thousands" of Russians killed in the invasion so far and return them to Russia, Ukraine says.
The country's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told a televised briefing "these are thousands of the occupiers' bodies. This is a humanitarian need.
"We ask that the bodies of the Russian occupiers leave the territory and go to the Russian Federation."
She asked the Red Cross directly: "Do what it takes to settle this humanitarian problem."
Earlier, the Ukrainian military said on Facebook that more than 3,500 Russian soldiers had been killed. Russia has so far not acknowledged any casualties.

Thank goodness the GBP saw sense and did not elect comrade Corbyn as PM, can you just imagine now??
Why does Jeremy Corbyn love Russia so much? It's not very nice
The Labour leader thinks he's defending the ideals of the Soviet Union
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/dam/news/2016/05/01/96766911_POTD_Corbyn_trans_NvBQzQNjv4Bqeo_i_u9APj8 RuoebjoAHt0k9u7HhRJvuo-ZLenGRumA.jpg?imwidth=680
Fifty years ago, when the current Labour leader was on the cusp of
adulthood, there was a logical explanation for why he loved Russia.
It was at the centre of a Communist empire called the Soviet Union,
providing for more than 200m people many of the ideals - state control of
the means of production, dislike of NATO, support of Castro's regime in Cub a
and a total loathing of what would go on to become the EU - which Jeremy
Corbyn has long held, and continues to profess today.
But what may have seemed reasonable in March 1968 no longer does. Today
the means of production are in the hands of a few oligarchs who arose out of
the post-Communist criminal underworld, its leaders have long abandoned
Communism in the interests of lining their own pockets, and it oppresses or
sidelines all of those groups which have fought long battles for equality -
homosexuals, people of colour, and the disabled to name just three.
In fact modern Russia makes Goldman Sachs, once dubbed the "vampire
squid" of financial services, look positively cuddly. Yet while he has long
argued for greater regulations, more taxation, and general ethical
crackdowns on corporate greed, Corbyn glosses over the fact that modern
Russia is more criminal, more malignant, and more inclined towards murder
than any evil corporation.
