Well done, the Good Ukraine Troops.
the russians seem to be completely incompetent. I think this is where putin is at his most dangerous. He is likely to use some form of devasting weapon. I wish sometimes that the west would stop saying the russians have stalled etc, because it's inviting worse action from the russians

To make matters worse the chain of command and communication lines seems to be extremely shaky... meaning there are a lot of Russian forced "going rogue", mainly small-scale stuff from troops, but I'd hazard a guess some larger strikes as well... which makes it difficult to know which actions have been handed down as orders and which are actions taken further down the chain of command. That both increases the risk to civilian targets, and introduces deniability when they are deliberately hit. "This civilian target was destroyed, that's a war crime" - "That strike wasn't ordered so this was hit by accident and is just collateral damage."

I agree with this part. Lots of premature celebrating and crowing from people who are trying to be supportive (all across the mainstream press, too) but the unintended effect will just be Putin seeking to "prove" that he's still in control of the situation.
Accurate and plainly-stated information is what's needed in situations like this. The reporting on this entire thing has been ludicrous in my opinion as I think I've made clear. The politics are extremely complicated and it's undeniable that the action taken by Russia has been brutal and barbaric, but the reporting on the politics behind all of it has veered off into utter fiction. These are issues that have been brewing for decades, we know what they are, and we know that the situation on the Russian border has been "poking the bear" for many years... the number of daft alternative explanations for this war are baffling.
The Pentagon's conservative assessment is 7,000 Russian troops dead and between 14,000-21,000 wounded. If you were a part of that Russian build up of troops on the border at the start of the year there's a 1 in 5 chance you're now dead or wounded which is pretty horrifying odds
the moral of the russian troops will get lower and lower. Many didn't want to be there in the first place and now they are sitting ducks being picked off. Being the aggressor, all their dead will just build up around them. Most of the troops havent moved in the last week or so .... that is going to be really grim
In the famous words of Limp Bizkit
"It's all about the he said she said bullish!t"

Russian state-backed news channel RT has had its licence to broadcast in the UK revoked "with immediate effect", media regulator Ofcom has said.
"We do not consider RT's licensee, ANO TV Novosti, fit and proper to hold a UK broadcast licence," it explained.
Ofcom is carrying out 29 investigations "into the due impartiality of RT's news and current affairs coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine".
The channel had already disappeared from all broadcast platforms in the UK.
It was removed earlier this month as a result of a ban imposed by the European Union.
Although the UK is no longer in the EU, the bloc applied sanctions to satellite companies in Luxembourg and France, which provided the RT feed to Sky, Freesat and Freeview in the UK.

The US government has effectively grounded nearly 100 planes with ties to Russia.
A list released on Friday by its Department of Commerce publicly identifies commercial and private aircraft said to be in contravention of US sanctions on Russia.
The list includes aircraft operated by Russian airlines, including Aeroflot.
While most are Boeing aircraft, a Gulfstream private jet owned by Roman Abramovich - the current owner of Chelsea football club - is also included.
The administration says providing service to these aircraft anywhere in the world - including inside Russia - may lead to heavy fines and potential jail time.

A spokesperson for Russia's defence ministry has said that Moscow has destroyed an underground depot in western Ukraine using hypersonic missiles.
Igor Konashenkov claimed that the warehouse had been housing missiles and "aviation ammunition of Ukrainian troops".
Russia has never before admitted to using hypersonic missiles in combat.
They are cutting edge ballistic missiles that can fly in the upper atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound.
According to the Russian military, the "Kinzhal" missile system used in the strike is capable of hitting targets at a range of more than 2,000km (1,242 miles) and can overcome all existing air and missile defence systems.

KYIV the capital
Was hit by the Super Fast Russian Missile
in the Shopping Centre.
8 Civilians died
Sadly this is how Russia is going to win.
The UK's ambassador to Ukraine has backed a potential visit to capital Kyiv by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, if security issues can be managed.
Melinda Simmons told Radio 4's Woman's Hour, the PM had done a "brilliant job" in showing solidarity with Ukraine, particularly in his conversations with President Zelensky.
"Any engagement is important to help bolster that extraordinary morale that the president has been showing by rallying the country and staying, himself, in the capital," said Simmons.
The staunchly pro-Kremlin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP) published an article quoting the ministry as saying 9,861 Russian servicemen had died, a figure which exceeds even US intelligence estimates of Russian fatalities.
It gave the number of wounded as 16,153.
Minutes later, this part of the article disappeared from the page, but we were able to take screen grabs of the relevant paragraphs.
KP editor Vladimir Sungorkin subsequently told the BBC the information had been the result of a hack, and said the paper will post an explanation later.

We build those places back up..look at mainland Europe after world war 2...we got involved, we took our medicine during it, and we also helped build those countries back up....we do nothing now, we could be looking at the exact same scenario.

how exactly could we help though. How are we going to get troops in there safely for example. If we want to stop russian missile strikes, we would have to take out their launchers in russia, cause thats where the big ones are launched from. Don't you see how quickly it all escalates.
Also, ukranians have home advantage, they know the terrain. Western troops wouldnt have that knowledge, and they are certainly not going to get into street fighting which is where this is all heading

WW2 was not a "world police" scenario, neither the UK nor the US got involved until there was a political mandate to do so. We can rewrite history and pretend that it was all good-heartedness and out of a desire to save innocents but it wasn't; the UK had a military pact with Poland, the Nazis invaded Poland, that pact was activated and Britain declared war. The US didn't get involved until they were attacked directly.
The UK and US won't go to war with Russia unless/until a NATO country or other country we have an alliance with is attacked. Nor should they. Ukraine is not one of those countries. Politically, it's that simple.

The way M.A.D works is that it's impossible to wipe out nuke-firing capability with a first strike, thus ensuring that there can be no winner. It's literally the entire point of Trident; the UK could be wiped off the face of the planet entirely, and we'd still have enough nuclear firepower at sea to destroy whoever did it.
Russia doesn't need a programme like Trident because it's ****ing massive and has active nuclear silos scattered all over the place. Impossible to target them all without there still being plenty left to fire back.

The UK has provided Ukrainian forces with more than 4,000 anti-tank missile systems to help with "their resistance against Russian aggression", the Ministry of Defence says.
In a series of tweets, the ministry says the devices sent were NLAWs (Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapons).
The ministry also refers to a video it describes as "Russian propaganda". It appears to be referring to footage published by two prominent Russian hoaxers who asked UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace about an alleged nuclear weapons programme for Ukraine, and who appeared to suggest the UK was running low on anti-tank weapons.
In the tweets, the MoD says the UK has "enough weapons systems to defend both UK national security and maintain our commitments to Nato".
"People should be very sceptical about reporting on, and accepting as real, any part of these Russian state doctored clips," it adds.

there is going to be a huge level of frustration among ordinary ukranian people, and in those circumstances they will lash out and blame everyone that is not sharing their pain. We should be doing more than lip service.
Britain took on massive amounts of polish refugees during world war 2, and many of their offspring I can call my best friends back home in scotland.
Their families flourished afterwards, so much so that there has been a time when the name
Poloczek was the young lad on horse back leading the yearly parades.
The name Wichary, being the surname of my best friend since I was 17, his brother not to far off being 2nd.
By standing by doing nothing we are stopping the future growth of this country, by allowing the slaughter of too many ukranians that we could have stood shoulder to shoulder with, not just today, but for generations to come, we are destroying trust for what may be needed when they need to come here en mass.
If we stand up now, we stand up for the future, a future we can at last hold our heads up high in.

I posted without comment, and I watched it. You can clearly see him carrying on the smirking and gurning like a bag head, but I have genuinely have no idea why people are so defensive on his behalf.
I think it's racism and homophobia that makes him so popular on this island.
What utter nonsense.. watch it again without your Boris hating blinkers on
Boris along with everyone else was laughing at the previous comments .. they were all still interacting with each other .. then Rishi started on another matter whilst they were still smiling ...
Are they all supposed to change to a very serious face in an instant ?
Now THAT would have looked strange !

Not really sure that after comparing brexiteers to Ukrainians fighting off Russians, that being seen to be laughing at them is a a good look. He was just partying and having a laugh while we were all locked up. If you look at the destruction caused in 3 years, maybe he should be taking things a little more seriously

The Ukrainian military says a large Russian ship has been destroyed near the southern port city of Berdyansk.
In a post on Facebook, Ukraine's Navy says a large landing vessel - the "Orsk" - was hit and set ablaze in the Sea of Azov this morning.
"The Orsk large landing ship of the Black Sea Fleet of the occupiers has been destroyed in the port of Berdyansk captured by Russia," the post says.
Ukrainian media report that one Russian ship has sunk and two others are on fire, and that an ammunition depot and a fuel warehouse were hit.
It is not possible to confirm this information from other sources.
Russia captured Berdyansk weeks ago and has been using the port for refuelling. It lies between Crimea and the besieged city of Mariupol.
Epic Games says it has raised more than $50m (£37m) to aid humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
The Fortnite publisher announced on 21 March it would donate all proceeds from in-game sales, including cosmetic in-game items and virtual currency bought in a shop or online, until 3 April.
And Xbox is donating the fee it would usually take on items bought by players in Fortnite.
The amount raised so far is greater than that given by some countries.
A statement on the Fortnite website said it would send funds "as quickly as we can".
"We're not waiting for the actual funds to come in from our platform and payment partners, which can take a while depending on how the transaction was processed. As transactions are reported, we'll log them and send the funds to the humanitarian relief organisations within days."
Epic is sending money to Unicef, Direct Relief, the UN Refugee Agency, and the UN World Food Programme.

Might have more to do with Boris likening brexiteers to Ukrainians fighting for their freedom, which obviously makes the EU into Russian type aggressors. I know nuance is not really your thing, though, so you tell em' Oliver.

I just gave an overview of actual words spoken by Boris.
If you think that Boris is respected anywhere around the globe, outside of his Russian oligarch backers, then we've hit an impasse. The fact he's isolating us at a time when that makes things more dangerous, should be of real concern to you if you're being sincere, not what some idiot on the internet thinks.
The Kremlin has said UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is the most active anti-Russian leader, but that London's approach would lead to a dead end.
"As for Mr Johnson, we see him as the most active participant in the race to be anti-Russian," RIA news agency quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.
"It will lead to a foreign policy dead end."
Earlier today, the UK announced sanctions on 65 more groups and individuals, including a private military firm and a major Russian bank

A month on the costs of the invasion have been pretty horrific but I'm glad to have been wrong in my prediction for how the war would go. I said in this thread that it would be over in a few days, in fact Russia has basically achieved nothing and paid a huge price
the problem is that russia has so many options with munitions, depending on their level of desperation, they could go much heavier than they are now.
For example, they could drop a tactical nuke on kyiv and that would basically end the war. The longer it goes on, the more likely they are to do it

I didn't know he'd said that, but I seem to remember Theresa May getting a similarly cold shoulder by world "leaders" at something or other a few years back, and she was largely inoffensive.

Definitely in the short term but the long term costs of an 'easy' Russian victory would have been a much worse outcome
the nato countries supplying the weapons have had to have a rethink because they never expected ukraine to hold out so long. Apparently russia has exhausted it's supply of accurate munitions which means they will just start carpet bombing
If they do that then what does victory look like? An ungovernable wasteland? There needs to be some infrastructure there especially in the capital
I know they've already basically destroyed Mariupol but that's because it's the last thing standing between a land border between Crimea and Russian territory
i think its a matter of principle now with putin. He would rather have rubble than an independent ukraine. If he does flatten it, he will have basically reinforced the borders of every country surrounding him because they will contain millions of displaced people that utterly despise him
