Russia's latest aerial attack on Ukraine saw missiles cross Moldovan airspace, Ukrainian and Moldovan officials have said.

Kyiv's top general said two missiles fired from the Black Sea flew above the neighbouring country - something confirmed in Chisinau.

The general also said the missiles crossed Nato member, Romania - something Romania disputes.

A Russian government spokesperson deflected questions about the incident.

During a regular call with journalists, Dmitry Peskov told the BBC it was a matter for the defence ministry, which is yet to comment.

Moldova has summoned the Russian ambassador - having done the same following a similar incident in October.

The Ukrainian air force said 71 missiles were fired in Friday's "massive" attack, of which it shot down 61.

Russian reservists could be using "shovels" for "hand-to-hand" combat in Ukraine due to a shortage of ammunition, the UK's Ministry of Defence says.

In late February, reservists described being ordered to assault a Ukrainian position "armed with only 'firearms and shovels'", the ministry said in its latest intelligence update.

It mentioned a shovel known as MPL-50.

The tool was designed in 1869 and had changed little, the ministry said.

It has been part of the Russian reservist army kit for decades.

"The lethality of the standard-issue MPL-50 entrenching tool is particularly mythologised in Russia," the ministry said.

The continued use of the shovel "as a weapon highlights the brutal and low-tech fighting which has come to characterise much of the war", it said.

One of the reservists described being "neither physically nor psychologically" prepared for the action, the update added.

"Recent evidence suggests an increase in close combat in Ukraine," it said.

"This is probably a result of the Russian command continuing to insist on offensive action largely consisting of dismounted infantry, with less support from artillery fire because Russia is short of munitions."

The BBC has been unable to independently verify these reports. The ministry did not give information on where such battles were taking place.

A US journalist working for the Wall Street Journal has been formally arrested in Russia and accused of spying.

Evan Gershkovich, an experienced Russia reporter, was working in Yekaterinburg at the time of his detention.

The Wall Street Journal said it was "deeply concerned" for his safety and vehemently denied the allegations against him.

The Kremlin claimed the reporter had been "caught red-handed".

The FSB said it had "halted illegal activities" and that the reporter had been "acting on US instructions" and "collecting state secrets".

Hours later, the security service took him to Lefortovo district court in Moscow for his formal arrest. He was later seen being escorted from the building before being driven away.

His lawyer said he had not been allowed into the courtroom. The court had earlier been cleared of staff and visitors because of a bomb threat, Russia's Ria state news agency said.

The FSB confirmed in its statement that Evan Gershkovich had foreign ministry accreditation while working in Yekaterinburg 1,800km (1,100 miles) east of Moscow.

His last WSJ piece this week reported on Russia's declining economy and how the Kremlin was having to deal with "ballooning military expenditures" while maintaining social spending.

But the FSB claimed he had been detained "acting on US instructions" and that he had "collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of a Russian defence enterprise". A criminal espionage case was launched by the FSB's investigation department, it added.

The US says it will support providing advanced fighter jets including US-made F-16s to Ukraine and also back training Ukrainian pilots to fly them.

A senior White House official said President Biden had told G7 leaders in Japan of the decision.

President Volodomyr Zelensky, who has requested fighter jets for months, said the decision would "greatly enhance our army in the sky".

US approval for the scheme will allow other nations to export their F-16s.

This is because the US legally has to approve the re-export of equipment purchased by allies.

The US would "support a joint effort with our allies and partners to train Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighter aircraft, including F-16s, to further strengthen and improve the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force", the official said.

"As the training takes place over the coming months, our coalition of countries participating in this effort will decide when to actually provide jets, how many we will provide, and who will provide them."

The announcement by the US will be viewed as a major breakthrough for the air capabilities of Ukraine, which has repeatedly lobbied its Western allies to provide jets to help in its fight against Russia.

Mr Zelensky welcomed what he described as a "historic decision", adding that he looked forward to "discussing the practical implementation" of the plan at the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

The announcement of US support for a programme to supply Ukraine with advanced fighters comes as the Ukrainian leader is due to travel to Japan to meet G7 leaders to secure further military support for its planned counter-offensive.
