To be fair, I do agree (with Putin ... ... :umm2: ...) that wars generally have NOTHING to do with the civilian population of a country, and the people and culture should not be persecuted because of the actions of their leaders. It's what saw thousands of Japanese-americans shoved into internment camps in the US during WW2 like they had anything to do with or any say in the actions of Japan.

It becomes even more ridiculous if "general Russian stuff" like books are being banned.

It's tricky because the aim is to exacerbate Russia's status as a pariah state and governments use culture all the time to increase their nations standing and their 'soft power' so it can be a legitimate tactic imo. Trying to purge historic books, ballets etc is taking it a bit far though

The chief of the Russian army says Russia will now focus its main war effort on the "complete liberation" of the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region.

The defence ministry said Russia had been considering two options for its "special military operation" - one covering the whole of Ukraine and one focusing on the Donbas.

The comments - carried by Russian state news agencies - hinted at a possible downgrading of Russia's war aims. Russian forces have met strong resistance in the north of Ukraine and around Kyiv.

Sergey Rudskoy, head of the main operational department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said 93% of Luhansk oblast and 54% of Donetsk oblast was under Russian control.

Russia had destroyed the vast majority of Ukraine's air force and navy, and this marked the successful end of the first phase of the conflict, he added.

However, the defence ministry did not rule out storming Ukrainian cities that had been blockaded and said Russia would react immediately to any move to close airspace over Ukraine - something President Zelensky has repeatedly urged.

The ministry also said Russia would continue its invasion until targets set by Putin had been achieved, Ria news agency reported, without specifying what the targets were.

He might be irrational in some of his actions, I've always said he's clearly power-hungry, he may be frustrated, his demeanor may show that. It may serve his purposes to SEEM unpredictable, is another take. Locking people away and making grandiose threats is pretty much standard stuff for authoritarian governments? He seeks to maintain the illusion of having more power than he does (it's increasingly seeming that Russia's only REAL military power is nuclear).

He isn't "not sane" and to believe that he is, you would have to have never encountered someone who is actually insane. They're not starting wars and locking people up... they're wandering around Tesco telling you that Jesus says they need more pesto. I'm not saying that from a place of ignorance about mental health but actually a place of knowledge; people who have lost their sanity are disregulated and quite obvious. Calling dictators and brutal warmongers "insane" is just an easy explanation IMO. "Oh they're just MAD!". They're not mad, they know what they're doing, they have clear goals and intentions. There's a line between these things and "insanity" though, in my opinion. I think in this case the important distiction is, Putin isn't invading Ukraine/staring wars "because he's randomly lost his mind" - he may be gradually losing his composure/becoming reckless/acting impulsively the more things don't go as he had expected. Things like paranoia again I think are just part and parcel of authoritarian autocracies. Delusions are just flat-out normal psychology - if you really look, everyone has them, some are just less consequential than others.

There's also an awful lot of talk of desertion and even troops turning on officers. That's what happens when you have mandatory military service. Force 20 year old kids into uniform and sure some will be into it... But others will have no allegiance or sense of duty at all and if they see a chance to get out - and they're a young person with no responsibilities or ties - they're going to take it.

I see very little benefit for Putin in this so one has to wonder just how much (little) control he currently has over his forces actions. We already know there are Russian soldiers sat by roadsides chatting to locals, and others deserting and fleeing west, so it stands to reason that on the other side of the "not professional soldiers" coin... He's still clearly intent on the "NATO are the baddies" narrative, that all the atrocities he's been accused of are Western false-flags... At the end of the day perspective tends to become more ingrained, not subverted; they won't get that shock you're waiting for them to get.

Brexiteers haven't "gotten a shock" at the various disasters currently facing Britain, they'd vote for it again. People now struggling to pay their bills would (and will) vote Tory again the next time they're at the polls. One could argue that if part of their main objective was to destabilise America by undermining the Petrodollar... It's looking a lot like they may have achieved that aim. War is not simple in the 21st century and there are massive strategic objectives at play that don't make it into the media often because they're not shocking in the way that tanks and bodies are, and also it takes a fair amount of political and economic background reading to even understand what it means.
