"The Finnish electricity network operator said it would be able
to make do without Russian electricity.

'We're prepared for this and it won't be difficult. We can make do
with a bit more imports from Sweden and Norway,' Fingrid's manager
for operational planning Timo Kaukonen told AFP.

He said a little less than 10 percent of electricity consumed in Finland
comes from Russia."

You don't arf sensationalise your snippets arista; you made it sound like Finland was going to be blacked out.

Well if NATO were foolish to get involved it will be WW3

If only Finland and Sweden could have someone talk sense to them. Lets hope Turkey comes through and vetoes their membership application.

Indeed.

If only Finland and Sweden could have someone talk sense to them. Lets hope Turkey comes through and vetoes their membership application.

Do not antagonise Putin!!!

NATO will not get involved because Ukraine and Russia are not part of NATO.

NATO would only get involved if Putin took it further out into a NATO country.

You may then just have a WW3.

Some of the wounded have been evacuated from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol now to DPR territory. It sounds like all the remaining troops might finally be surrendering

MTVN
16-05-2022, 07:43 PM
One of the commanders left there published a video this evening saying the following

The defenders of Mariupol carried out their orders, despite all odds, held strong against the overwhelming forces of the enemy for 82 days and allowed the Ukrainian Army to regroup, train more personnel, and receive countless weapon shipments from allied countries.

No weapon will work without a professional behind it, which makes them the most valuable element of the army.

In order to save lives, the entire Mariupol garrison is implementing the decision approved by the Supreme Military Command, and is hoping for the support of the Ukrainian people.

[Ukraine war: Every bridge leading to key city
Severodonetsk destroyed]

All bridges to the embattled Ukrainian
city of Severodonetsk have now
been destroyed, the local governor says.
With the city effectively cut off, Serhiy Haidai says
delivering supplies and evacuating civilians
are now impossible.
Fierce fighting is taking place in the
eastern city where Ukrainian officials
said Russian artillery had driven its
forces out of the centre.
For weeks capturing Severodonetsk has
been a top military goal for Russia.

Taking Severodonetsk and the nearby city
of Lysychansk would give Moscow control

American soldiers are not supposed to be there, private citizens with a passport however can travel where they want and once in that country can join that country’s forces if they want to and that country allows it…

…however… I personally don’t think it’s all that different to people going to Middle Eastern countries to join ISIS, in all honesty. The differences in political ideology are obvious, but the action itself is (largely) the same.

I have suspicions over the motivations for a lot of young men doing it too - I suspect most are looking for a legitimate way to play soldier rather than going there on a moral crusade.

The better trained ones that go, I think are most likely paid mercenaries.

A British man sentenced to death by a Russian proxy court for fighting in Ukraine has been told the execution will be carried out, his family say.

Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner were sentenced by a court which is not internationally recognised, in the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

Mr Aslin told his family his captors said there had been no attempt by UK officials to negotiate on his behalf.

The foreign secretary discussed his case with Ukraine earlier in June.

Liz Truss said she and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba had spoken about "efforts to secure the release of prisoners of war held by Russian proxies" and has called the death sentences a "sham judgement with absolutely no legitimacy".

The Foreign Office is known to be actively investigating cases of British nationals who have been detained in Ukraine, and is providing support to the families of Mr Aslin and Mr Pinner.

Mr Aslin's family said they had spoken to him in a phone call in which he said he had been told "time is running out" by his captors.

"There are no words, just no words, it's got to be everyone's worst nightmare to have a member of your family threatened in this way", Mr Aslin's grandmother Pamela Hall told the BBC.

"Aiden was extremely upset when he called his mother this morning. The bottom line is Aiden has said the DPR has told him nobody from the UK has made contact, and that he will be executed."

"I have to believe what Aiden has said to us, that if the DPR don't get some response then they will execute him. Obviously I hope that isn't true."

Mr Aslin and Mr Pinner moved to Ukraine in 2018, and had served as part of Ukraine's armed forces for several years before the Russian invasion.

Both had Ukrainian partners and had made the country their home. They were captured after spending weeks defending the besieged city of Mariupol.

But the Russian-proxy court called them "mercenaries", accusing them of being sent to fighting in a foreign conflict for money.

They were charged with crimes including the violent seizure of power, and undergoing training to carry out terrorist activities, according to Russian news outlets RIA Novosti.

Earlier this month Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky told British students that what Russia was doing to the British pair was a "tragic habit" and said "there cannot be any justifications for such actions".

He said it was "a very powerful and dangerous signal" to other countries that Russia was "acting this way towards citizens of any country".

The UK government has said they should be treated as prisoners of war under the laws laid out in the Geneva Conventions.

"I have cried buckets over this, but crying doesn't help, I want do so something but I don't know what to do.

Ms Hall said: "After Aiden's call this morning what am I supposed to think? I don't want to lose heart but it's very hard."

"I can't help but think that contact should be made between the UK and Russia."

But UK government sources indicate that ministers are currently unwilling to negotiate with Russia directly because it may risk fuelling a false Russian narrative that the men are mercenaries.

Mr Aslin had shortly been due to marry his Ukrainian fiancée, who has come to the UK since his capture.

"He would have been married by now, it's something that I would have dearly loved. I want him to be married and have the life that he wanted," his grandmother said.

"I know that Boris Johnson has been over to Kyiv and spoken again to President Zelensky and I am hoping they spoke about these guys."

In recent weeks Mr Aslin and Mr Pinner have been mocked by presenters on pro-Kremlin television programmes in Russia, which have been showing videos of the men in captivity.

Depends on whether you believe Russia's rhetoric (that they only ever wanted to annex Ukraine or part of Ukraine/to halt the expansion of NATO) or the Western rhetoric (that if taking Ukraine had been easy Russia would have quickly moved on to other targets, but will think twice because of the difficulty of the conflict).

Most likely neither are particularly accurate. We don't get to know what the real politics at play are.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/07/14/netherlands-can-get-winter-without-russian-gas-gasunie

The Netherlands can get through the coming winter with no gas shortages, even if Russia completely stops providing gas to Europe, provided that some preconditions are met. Gasunie Transport Services (GTS), the Netherlands’ national gas network operator, came to this conclusion after investigating the consequences of Russia closing the gas tap to Europe, NOS reports.

According to GTS, it won’t be necessary to shut down the industry or cut heating this coming winter. “That is good news for Dutch buyers,” GTS director Bart Jan Hoevers said to the broadcaster. “Other emergency measures such as extra production from the Groningen field do not appear to be necessary for the coming months.”

The GTS assumed that the coming winter would be an average one. “If you look at the coldest winter, you would need about 10 percent extra gas,” Hoevers said to NOS. “Now that could be less due to the high price.” But if Netherlands residents continue to be stingy with their gas use, as they’ve been over the past months due to the high prices, that also should not pose a significant problem.

Russia has already reduced its gas supply to Europe in the past few months. For example, Germany received 60 percent less gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. The pipeline shut down entirely on Monday for annual maintenance. Germany expects Russia will keep it closed under the guise of technical problems.

That should not be a problem for the Netherlands as long as the following preconditions are met: gas usage remains 20 percent lower as is currently the case due to the high prices, coal-fired power stations continue to operate at full capacity, the Netherlands succeeds in doubling its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to 24 billion cubic meters as planned, the LNG terminals in the Netherlands, Belgium, and United Kingdom continue to be fully utilized, and the Dutch gas storage facilities are filled to at least 80 percent. The Dutch gas storage facilities are currently about 57 percent full.

If the preconditions are met, the Netherlands will also be able to still export gas to Germany, France, and Belgium. Those countries depend on supply from the Netherlands for low-calorific gas.

.

some good news in terms of my nation's gas replacement for upcoming winter, and also good news for our neighbour countries Germany & Belgium, and France

An open act of terrorism. That’s how Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky described a Russian rocket attack on Thursday, which hit the western Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia. Officials say at least 23 people including three children have died, with another 66 people hospitalised. The missiles hit apartment blocks and a nearby cultural centre.

It was in that cultural centre — Vinnytsia’s House of Officers — that Roxolana‘s crew were preparing for her charity concert, which was supposed to take place on 17 July. Her fellow Vidbir star LAUD was supposed to appear as a guest performer. According to a report in The Guardian, the air strikes blew the roof off of the building where Roxolana’s crew were working.

The strikes wounded several of her crew members. Two were in critical condition following the strikes.

In a statement on her Instagram, Roxolana shared the following:
“Friends, we are currently in Vinnytsia. Unfortunately, at the time of the air strikes, a part of our team was on the main square. They are all wounded, two are fighting for their lives in the operating rooms. As a result, all performances and concerts are cancelled, and we are praying for the life of all who were hurt today.”

“We will never forgive. The money of the concert tickets will be returned. Please, pray.”

Several hours after the statement, Roxolana revealed that her sound engineer, Yevhen, had died as a result of the blast, while another team member remains in critical condition.

Roxolana and her team have received an outpouring of support from other artists in the Ukrainian music industry.

Among those who wrote messages of support were Eurovision 2022 winners Kalush Orchestra. But also Eurovision host Volodymyr Ostapchuk and song contest acts as Zlata Ognevich, Verka Serduchka and Tina Karol, who pledged moral support.

Roxolana had already visited more than half of the destinations on her tour. Only Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil and Zhytomyr remained.

https://nltimes.nl/2022/07/17/24000-ukrainian-refugees-working-netherlands-amsterdam-hague-popular

At least 24,000 refugees from Ukraine have found work in the Netherlands, according to the latest data. The UWV benefits agency reported the statistic on the basis of documents filed by employers. The Ukrainian people mainly found a job in the hospitality industry and through employment agencies. Most refugees started working in and around Amsterdam, and in the region around The Hague.

Since the beginning of June, UWV received new reports about 10,800 Ukrainians who entered the workforce. In April and May, there were 13,200 known to the benefits agency. Almost half of the refugees found a job through an employment agency. Ukrainians have often found work through the recruiters as production workers, warehouse staff, and cleaners. Many refugees also found work in the hospitality industry (12 percent), in agriculture and horticulture (8 percent) and business services (5 percent).

To a certain extent, Ukrainians have also provided some relief in sectors where there is a large shortage of people, according to UWV. About half of the people started working in a sector where there is a shortage of personnel.

Employers are not required to apply for a work permit for Ukrainian refugees. Since April, however, they must report to the UWV if they employ a refugee. In this way, the UWV hopes to identify and reduce the risk of exploitation. An employer may be fined for failing to report the hiring of a Ukrainian refugee.

If a refugee finds other work during their stay in the Netherlands, or if they stop working altogether, this must also be reported to UWV by the employer. This has happened 900 times since the end of May.

[The war in Ukraine began with Crimea
and must end with its liberation,
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Ukraine's president was speaking after
a string of explosions hit a
Russian airbase there, killing one person.
Mr Zelensky did not mention Tuesday's
blasts but said: "Crimea is Ukrainian
and we will never give it up."
Russia's defence ministry said
ammunition detonated at the base.
Meanwhile, Ukraine denied any
responsibility for the explosions.

In a separate development,
Ukrainian officials say 13 people were
killed in overnight Russian strikes
in the central Dnipropetrovsk region,
and another one in the
Zaporizhzhia region in the south.

Crimea is internationally recognised
as part of Ukraine - but the
Black Sea peninsula was annexed by
Russia in 2014 after a referendum
which the global community sees
as illegitimate. Many Ukrainians
see this as the start of their war with Russia.

On Tuesday, a series of explosions

A quarter of sponsors of Ukrainians as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme do not want to continue the arrangement beyond six months, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has found.

Launched in March, it has seen about 75,000 refugees arrive in the UK.

Sponsors agreed to provide accommodation in their own home for a minimum of six months.

But there are concerns at what will happen when those arrangements reach the end of that time.

The scheme was set up by the government to help those fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and worked alongside the Ukraine Family Scheme - which allowed refugees to join relatives already living in the UK.

An ONS survey of Homes for Ukraine hosts found 26% want to end their sponsorship after six months or less.

Six out of 10 sponsors said they were happy to accommodate their Ukrainian guests for more than the agreed minimum with almost a quarter saying they would be prepared to continue the arrangement for more than a year.

However, almost all sponsors said they had provided support and help to their guests that went beyond the official arrangement.

Eight out of 10 said they had given them food, two-thirds had helped them find work and 45% had provided financial support.

The ONS research also found that 18% of those signed up for the scheme were still waiting for guests to move in.

Of those who did not wish to accommodate Ukrainians for more than six months, just under a quarter said their decision was down to the rising cost of living.

Ukraine's new football premier league season starts amid war

As soon as the air raid sirens had stopped, Shakhtar Donetsk's players ran out onto the pitch for their final training session on Monday before Ukraine begins an extraordinary new season of its national soccer league.

As Ukrainian soldiers battle Russian forces in the east and south, Shakhtar are due to play Metalist 1925, from Kharkiv, in the opening game at 1000 GMT (8pm AEST) on Tuesday.

The match in Kyiv kicks off a day before Ukraine marks six months since Russia invaded, starting a war that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.

"This will be a unique competition: It will happen during a war, during military aggression, during bombardments," Andriy Pavelko, head of the Ukrainian Association of Football said .

Matches will be played without fans due to the risk of bombs and missiles. Two top-flight clubs — Desna Chernihiv and FC Mariupol — are being replaced in the 16-team league after their stadiums were destroyed.

FC Mariupol's whole future has been thrown into question after Russia captured the club's home city in a brutal three-month siege that Ukraine says killed over 20,000 residents.

Pavelko said much of the impetus to restart the season in the fraught circumstances had come from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian army, who hope the league will help lift national morale.

"Many people at the front lines asked us to start thinking about restarting football in our country," Pavelko said.

He toured Ukraine in March and April to convince club presidents not to let their teams wither away, and to prepare them for a new season, he said.

Shakhtar, one of the favourites for this year's title who will also compete in Europe's Champions League, are no strangers to war.

They relocated from their home city of Donetsk in 2014 when the city was captured by Russia-backed separatists.

The forced relocation didn't stop Shakhtar's on-pitch success, winning five of the eight league titles since then.

They were leading the table on February 24, when the season came to an abrupt halt as Russia commenced its invasion.

Owned by Ukraine's richest man Rinat Akhmetov, Shakhtar has previously relied on superstars from Brazil, where the club built a large scouting network.

After an exodus of foreign players caused by the war, Croatian head coach Igor Jovicevic — who was appointed in June — is now trying to rebuild the squad with young, home-grown players.

"For a long time, there was a Brazilian Shakhtar, a top team," Jovicevic said on Monday.

"But now we have to forget about this, and prepare the new (team) as quickly as possible."

Bomb shelters and goalposts
The new season presents an array of logistical challenges, including the risk of missile strikes.

All stadiums must have bomb shelters.

Matches will only be played in Kyiv, its surrounding region and two western provinces.

Every time an air raid siren sounds, a daily occurrence in most regions, the game will be stopped for players and match officials to take shelter in basements until the all-clear, Pavelko said.

That has left some players like Shakhtar's stalwart midfielder Taras Stepanenko worried about how they will keep their muscles warm in games that are broken up with long breaks.

"It will be hard if it lasts more than an hour. Maybe they should set up some (training) bicycles for us," Stepanenko said.

Military officials will be present at every game and if an air raid siren lasts more than an hour, they will confer with the referee to decide whether to wait or to postpone the match completely, Pavelko said.

Pavelko said the war has not only destroyed facilities but has also scuppered the futures of thousands of young talented soccer players.

"This isn't just about losing stadiums. This is about a whole generation of footballers who won't be able to develop."

Ukraine war: British volunteer medic killed

[A British national has been killed
while volunteering as a medic in Ukraine.
Craig Mackintosh's sister Lorna said he
had lost his life "in the line of duty".

In a GoFundMe set up to
bring his body home
she revealed that he had been killed in
Ukraine on 24 August.

"Please help us bring this war
hero home," Ms Mackintosh wrote.
"Our brother bravely volunteered
to go to (Ukraine) as a medic to
help save lives in this war torn country.
"In the line of duty, helping others
he lost his life.
This selfless man is currently stranded
in a morgue in Ukraine and there
is no help to get him home."

She said it would cost around
£4,000 to bring his body back to the UK.]

The chairman of Russia's Lukoil oil giant, Ravil Maganov, has died after falling from a hospital window in Moscow, reports say.

The company confirmed his death but said only that Maganov, 67, had "passed away following a severe illness".

Russian media said he was being treated at Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital and died of his injuries.

Maganov is the latest of a number of high-profile business executives to die in mysterious circumstances.

Investigating authorities said they were working at the scene to establish how he died. Tass news agency quoted sources saying he had fallen out of a sixth-floor window early on Thursday morning, adding later that he had taken his own life.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Lukoil board called for the conflict to end as soon as possible, expressing its sympathy to victims of "this tragedy".

Its billionaire president, Vagit Alekperov, resigned in April after the UK imposed sanctions on him in response to the invasion.

Several Russian energy oligarchs have died in unusual circumstances in recent months:

The body of millionaire Novatek former manager Sergei Protosenya was found alongside his wife and daughter at a Spanish villa in April
A former vice-president of Gazprombank, Vladislav Avayev, was found dead with his wife and daughter in their Moscow flat, also in April
In May, a former Lukoil tycoon Alexander Subbotin died of heart failure, reportedly after seeking alternative treatment from a shaman.
