Money being thrown around in football nowadays really has soared up...
£70m gets you Jordan Henderson, Andy Carroll and Phil Jones these days. The football market in England has went crazy. I remember 70 million could buy you Zidane and Figo about 10 years ago.

£9.5 Million deal agreed with Ipswich for Wickham apparently
The game has gone mad, I quite rate Henderson to be fair and Wickham is a good prospect so they are the prices that have to be paid, as silly as they are. That doesn't explain the Carroll transfer.
Locke.
09-06-2011, 02:59 PM
Carroll transfer was always going to be £15 Million less than the Torres transfer. So if Torres went for £70 Million we'd have been paying £55 Million for Carroll.
Was just a rushed transfer, we were in for Mario Gomez and Llorente after Torres handed in the transfer request, but the bids were rejected so think we just wanted to get a new striker in quickly.

that what i hate about professional sport all around Football, American Football, Basketball Players are being payed in Millions to play sports. That's why there such things as Lockouts or Player Strikes that ruin any sport....imagine if that happened to FIFA because Players are getting too much or getting too little money. (I dunno if it could actually happen tho but i thought i saw a Fifa Pro union in the copyright thing when i bought fifa one time)

Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak has resigned himself to starting life at another Premier League club after making only seven appearances as Edwin van der Sar's deputy last season and the Old Trafford club signing Atletico Madrid's David de Gea.
this even better news than signing Young, Jones, de Gea or anyone else :joker:
Manchester United are planning a £10m bid for Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri who will be a free agent in 12 months time.
what a bargain that would be!!! :elephant:
There's no way Arsenal will let Nasri go for £10m.

They sold Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adabayor to Manchester City. They beat us to Ramsey, we beat them to Smalling and they had Mikael Silvestre:D.
Villa fans must be relieved about Martinez news but Dave Whelan is a good chairman, nice guy and is a owner actually passionate about the so called ''beautiful game'' and just doesn't own a club for the £££.

He was and United were interested at one point, don't think he starts much for them now though.
Hearing about some kind of hitch with the Phil Jones deal, United agreed to pay the release clause and he had a medical plus agreeing a five year deal and now Blackburn's owners are claiming to want £25 million instead. Bet the player is well pissed off!

He's already turned down Liverpool and has made it clear he wishes to play for United:p.
I read on some forum he was a United fan as a kid:conf:. Legally though Blackburn don't have a leg to stand on because he wouldn't have had a medical if they weren't happy with the fee and him agreeing a deal with United.

I'm confident it'll still go through, if anything this just makes Blackburns owners look like fools:joker:.
So he had a release clause in his contract for £16 million, which United and some other clubs offered.. he decided to accept United's offer because of wanting to stay in the North West then they decide to ask for more money after he'd already had a meeting and a medical with the club he decided to choose.. madness!

Maybe his agent approached them touting for his client to move to a big club?
Either way Phil Jones has chosen a move to United and if Blackburn tried to force him to stay there he'd just come to us when his contract is over. Legally United have done nothing wrong IMO because Blackburn could have refused the offer because they're lying if they would have claimed not to be contaced.

Move Johnson to his usual position at RB, have Kelly challenging for CB (he is a natural CB but after playing his first game for us at RB he made the position his own), send Wilson out on loan, keep one of Insua and Aurelio (it will be Aurelio, Insua's contract is up some time this month), have Flanagan and Robinson challenging for the full back spots with Johnson and the new LB, and sort Kyrgiakos' contract out for a 12 month extension.

So guys... what do you think of your teams opening fixtures?
Hibs:
Celtic (h)
Inverness (a)
Newcastle:
Arsenal (h)
Sunderland (a)
Both tough starts but I cant wait! :D
Pretty glad you have got Celtic at home they beat you 3/3 times last season but you have got two quality players in already it will be a tough test for them, Hearts at home for us is tough as well but i think they'll be selling a lot of players over the summer and they'll be a totally different side then they were last season.
Newcastle have signed midfielder Sylvain Marveaux from French club Rennes on a five-year deal.
The 25-year-old left winger had also been linked with Liverpool but will complete a move to St James' Park for an undisclosed fee on 1 July.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew said: "It's a coup to have signed Sylvain, who has had interest from a number of clubs.
"He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time."
Marveaux is the third Frenchman recruited by Newcastle recently after Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye.
And confirmation of his capture comes a day after the Magpies signed Senegal international striker Demba Ba.
Marveaux will help to offset the loss of Newcastle skipper Kevin Nolan, who joined West Ham on Thursday.

Yep, start of the season is the time to get these games as well as this is when the Old Firm can be a bit rusty.
You's should beat Hearts.

I just hope jf that Macleish does for Aston Villa what he did for Birmingham last season. Which is extremely little indeed, Good riddance to him.
He won them the Carling cup if Birmingham had stayed up it would have been on their most successful seasons ever.. there is only so much you could do with an average team though he did well to beat Arsenal in the final

I agree with much of that Novo, the Carling cup win should have inspired him to get more points in the bag, he however kept rambling on about only needing around 40 points to be safe in the Premier league, but he failed to get there.
He had injuries to deal with, true, but really even the last game at Tottenham,Birmingham played pretty good but it was his direction as to the format they played in which clearly hadn't been successful for many months overall.
That was where he failed the team and club,he would not change anything, I guess like myself to a degree,he couldn't see them not at least winning one of their last 2 home games so he just left things to roll on.
The rest is history but I feel he concentrated on just getting that last point or 2 he needed and wasn't prepared to open up the game more for his Players.
The players are the ones on the pitch, that's true but they can only do so much when rigidly forced to do so on a playing format that clearly was their Managers instruction but was one which hadn't been successful enough and was not likely to be. McLeish failed very badly to even try to address that problem.

I think the players let Mcleish down more then anything, he took Birmingham to their highest position in over 50 years, He took us into the last 16 of the champions league before he went to Birmingham we only lost out on the last 8 on away goals his managing ability is unquestionable okay his domestic form isn't great but his cup form is outstanding, the players should have thought harder for the top flight status towards the end of the season they obviously didn't want it as much as the likes of Wolves, they were victims of their own success after the carling cup victory maybe.
I wish him all the best at Aston Villa.. i think he's a decent guy and a good manager when he has the right players to work with Villa are a much bigger club then Birmingham he's more suited there.

Mcleish isn't my cup of tea as a manager, even with limited resources you can at least experiment with playing formats, other teams knew the likely format he would force Birmingham to play and also they would see it hadn't been successful.
As I say he isn't my cup of tea as a manager but you clearly like him and admire his management ways so I duly respect that.

Good News that Newcastle have signed Marveaux, he looked certain to sign for Liverpool at one point:D.
So Modric will probably end up going to Chelsea then? Despite Levy's statement all the player would have to do is hand in a transfer request and a very high bid would be too good for Spurs to turn down;).

Not sure like, yeah he's good but I've saw him plenty times last season and I wouldn't say he's worthy of a regular place in a top 6 side just yet, he could possibly use Newcastle as another stepping stone before moving up to someone like Everton or Arsenal.

Sky Sports released a story saying that Dale Jennings (young Tranmere player that Bayern Munich are interested in) had turned Munich down and signed for Charlton. Charlton fans were made up thinking they were a big club again for a few minutes, then Sky said they'd made a mistake and it is Dale Stephens they have signed :joker:

Birmingham City FC owner Carson Yeung arrested in Hong Kong
Jun 29 2011
Carson Yeung
Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung has been arrested in Hong Kong over alleged money laundering.
Reports in the Far East claim two premises have been raided and documents relating to the Hong Kong-based businessman have been collected.
In a statement on the club’s website, Birmingham City’s acting chairman Peter Pannu confirmed that Mr Yeung was assisting the police in Hong Kong in relation to certain criminal investigations but said he believed it did not have any connection to the operation of the parent company, Birmingham International Holdings, or any of its subsidiaries.
The statement continued: “I have just had a call from the Birmingham International Holdings lawyers informing me of the position in Hong Kong and I have also been informed by them that Carson is assisting with enquiries that have nothing to do with the operation of BIHL in Hong Kong and therefore nothing to do with the operation of the club, and relate to other matters.
“People are reminded that in recent years members of the previous Board were placed on bail for a significant amount of time and nothing came of it. I am only using this as an example to calm any fears.
“The law says a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“Until I find out more information about this matter there is no further comment to be made.”

Getting so fed up with Hibs at the moment... we need to get the Calderwood situation resolved now, not a few days before the start of the season.
After a number of interviews he's had he hasn't once committed his future to us. If he doesn't want to be with us then let him go to Birmingham or Forest IMO, if we are gonna do well this season we need everyone to be committed to the cause, especially the manager.

Our signings so far have been pretty positive, but us looking at players has also came to a stand-still because of CC, I can't say I'm overly-confident about this season.
If we don't improve on last season though then I'll struggle to find a reason to cough up another £180 again for a season ticket.

He's a good player but can he live up to the hype of last season again. IMO no wonder the current top teams weren't interested.
Bookies kept making out United were interested etc but there was no confirmation of that and we were never in the frame to sign him. Only Liverpool were destined for his signature once their interested was noted.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes: The biggest problem with most English players is that they are just too selfish
The 36-year-old admits individuals use the international stage to engineer a move to a big club and finds it "laughable" that the Three Lions tend to be pre-tournament favourites
By Stephen Darwin
9 Jul 2011 23:51:00
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has hit out at England's international stars, insisting that the biggest problem with most English players is that they are "just too selfish".
Scholes, who amassed 66 caps for his country before quitting the international scene back in 2004, retired from football at the end of last season and the 36-year-old admits he grew "fed up" with Three Lions players who were only interested in personal glory.
“I got fed up,” Scholes said, as quoted by the Telegraph. “When you are going to a team, and you want to be part of a team and playing well, and there are individuals who are after personal glory... when there is a simple pass of 10 yards, they might try and smack it 80 yards. They will do things to try and get themselves noticed.
“No, [playing out of position] was never a problem. I played on the left for United I don’t know how many times. I probably had my most successful time scoring goals in that position so it was never a problem.”
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested in the past that players care more about playing for their club than for their country and Scholes suggests that could be half the problem England face.
“You still hate losing, whether it is Manchester United or England,” he added.
“Maybe it is half the problem if players are going into that squad and not caring about it. I think there definitely is an element of that, what Jamie said about not being bothered about England losing.
“I always felt when I first started going away with England, players — especially players at clubs like your Aston Villas — try to use England as a way to get to a top club. Which, I don’t know, you feel: are they there for the right reason? I think they are very selfish people.
“It happened in my day, I think they are all there to get their bit of glory, their headlines, to think, ‘Oh, I will get a move from this’. That is the biggest problem with English players: that most of them are just too selfish.
“[When they get their move] they have probably done what they have wanted to do and that is enough, to get to a big club. It was a frustration for us United lads. It was just selfish. If you look at the Spain team now, they all seem to play for each other. There isn’t one of them who would try to do something in a game that doesn’t suit the team and the way they play. And that could happen over here.”
Scholes went on to suggest that he finds it "laughable" that England enter major international competitions and are considered pre-tournament favourites by many.
“No [England players are not technically deficient], it is probably more attitude. If you look through our teams, there are loads of technically brilliant players but for some reason when we go onto the international scene, we don’t look like that. Why? I just don’t know. We, England, go to these tournaments with the greatest of hopes when really the reality of winning something is not really there because there are so many good teams.
“The French of a few years ago, Spains, Brazils, Argentinas, we just seem to be not as good as them.
“You never feel that when you are playing. You always think you’ve got a chance. We feel we’ve got the good players, people say the best in the world, but I don’t really think we have if you go on international tournaments.
“We are the favourites every time and we probably will be next time.
“We will beat Macedonia 6-0 in qualifiers and we’ll be 5/1 favourites for the World Cup. It is just the way we are. I think it is quite laughable, don’t you? It is just the mentality of English people. We think we are going to win everything.”
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3284/euro-2012/2011/07/09/2568103/former-manchester-united-midfielder-paul-scholes-the-biggest?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed
Too right Scholesy, well said.
bbfan1991
09-07-2011, 11:40 PM
I agree with Scholesy too but players have ambition, he'll be thinking now that Ashley Young will further improve on the United squad now so slightly hypocritical:p.
Thought you didn't want N'Zogbia? Hoping that Big Eck gives people like Cuellar and Warnock a chance again. Dunne and Collins were unreliable last season at the back, too many mistakes.
