Based on a the libel trial brought by David Irvine, (A holocaust denier), against
Acclaimed writer and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt, who also happens to be Jewish

Part of it was actually filmed a Auschwitz which had the most moving parts. What the film did highlight was how we really need to revisit our UK libel laws which have silenced those who would criticise pseudo science and quack cures[/Soapbox]

Afro Samurai: Resurrection.

It's not as good as the Anime imo which does a fantastic build up along with the great action scenes. But for what this Film is it's good fun and Lucy Liu does a good betrayal as Sio, and it does raise some good points about Afro's actions.

I would personally score this Film an 8.5/10 as it has it's moments, but just not at the heights of the Anime TV Series imo.

The Founder

As decent as Michael Keaton was, the film just flipped from loveable underdog trying to make a coin for himself, to all-out evil prick with little personal narrative. Just didn't fit right as a film, and the surrounding cast were largely pointless and undeveloped too. I'd give it a 5/10 because it was OK but...yeah I'll forget that quick.

I was fully on-board until that bloody terrible Crab song. Awful awful awful moment in an otherwise charming and lovely Disney movie. I'd give it an 8/10 though. Not as strong as Big Hero 6/Wreck-It Ralph but better than The Princess & The Frog and Winnie the Pooh.

I'd put it on the same level as Frozen or Brave. Really good, a really strong lead song that's stuck in my head, but not quite tugging at my heartstrings.

Whiplash (2014) - 10/10

Wow. What an incredibly enthralling and inspirational film this was. I can see why JK Simmons won an Oscar for his part in it, he was such a ****ing bastard and played it perfectly! The character of Andrew was fleshed out well enough and was very likeable too. The ending was fitting and i'm glad it didn't end how most would expect it to, with Andrew getting the girl, so it was pretty realistic in that sense. Even if you're not a big music fan i'd still recommend you give this a watch.

Arrival

At first upon completion I was left confused... so I reread the plot and put the dots together. I don't know if I just wasn't paying enough attention but without reading up the plot afterwards, I'd have left the cinema feeling... eh.

Themes it touched upon felt a bit "LeatherTrumpet would hate this" (ie. imploring the world to communicate for the common good, rather than listen to the wackjob on the public radio urging everyone to shoot it down)... concept of Whorfianism is fascinating and not something I was particularly aware of (but have previously considered in my own limited way when learning other languages )... and then a nice bit of time travel/destiny/"would you still have a baby if you knew it would die of cancer before it reached adulthood?" stuff.

Only thing is I felt this was all deliberately so vague that there was little emotional thrust behind the film, so I can't say I was hooked through anything other than the tension (which was, admittedly, rather well done). Its deliberate moves not to go all typical sci-fi as well in that the opening of the film is Adams' character just walking past all of the gawking news coverage, when one would expect an alien invasion film to begin all "DOWNTOWN TOKYO. ENTER: ****ING MASSIVE SPACESHIP. CITIZENS RUN AROUND SCREAMING. TAXI CRASHES AND FLIPS." etc. It was a very isolationist film that really played well into the story of Adams' character's paranoia and doubts.

I'd give it an 8 or a 9... undecided. Left the film wanting to know more about it and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Moonlight (2016) - 8/10

Finally got around to seeing this. All three segments intertwined very well I thought and I enjoyed them all, the adolescence segment in particular was my favourite. I liked the adulthood segment too

The scene that sticks with me is when he goes to visit Paula and that overwhelming exchange between them before he forgives her. The haunting sadness made that scene all the more stronger I thought.

On the other hand, I was expecting a bit more from the ending? I was hoping Chiron would come out of selling drugs and do something else with his life or something along the lines of that, but I can kinda forgive it because its such a well-made film.

Overall, it's a solid film in every aspect really. The cast and acting were fantastic, shout-out to the stunning cinematography too.

Just watched it too Niamh and it was pretty faultless. Only bad thing I can say about it is that the end came out of nowhere and I was left with the sense of "...THAT CAN'T BE IT?"

I wanted to see the next 34 years!!! It was great. Went into it without knowing anything about the plot so the heaviness of it caught me by surprise. I'd give it a 10 just because I can't fault it (and I'm generous with rankings apparently)

Had low expectations of it not being my thing. Enjoyed it though. Saw a lot of criticism about there being no songs that you'll remember which is pretty true I guess but weirdly I don't think it relied or had to rely on them. Was really funny which I wasn't expecting either. It was really pleasant and will probably go down as one of the greats... I still preferred Manchester though

Kubo & the Two Strings - lovely. Animation was fascinating and pretty much as magical as the stories it told. Think I read it was a directorial debut which is astounding given how accomplished and put-together it was. Quite a similar to style to Coraline (just seen he was an animator on that), which I liked stylistically but didn't enjoy the story too much. This was ten times the movie that was. I'd give it a 9/10 but I'd be wondering why I hadn't given it a 10.

Then watched Patriots Day... eh I dunno I felt two ways about it being made at all. Still too recent, perpetrator's still alive, and the director's previous work didn't instill a lot of hope (Hancock, Battleship)... plus there's the fact I cannot stand either Mark Wahlberg or Kevin Bacon... so I had quite a lot of bias against it before I'd even seen it. And there wasn't too much to change my mind. It felt needlessly exploitative (why fictionalise a main character? Why make a movie to honour Boston's heroism with a made-up lead?), the action sequences were too dizzying to leave behind anything actually captivating (it felt a little like watching Cloverfield sometimes, which worked in Cloverfield because of its camera style and tied into its fictional/mystery theme, but here was just confusing and loud noise)... I would say in its defense that I can't say I've seen a film like it before. Its audacity at depicting so many grim realities of very recent events is...if distasteful, quite shocking. And it's well acted by some of its minor cast, the effects are frighteningly realistic, and it could've gone down a sugar-coated Michael Bay route, but chose not to... but whatever routes it took weren't good enough to excuse what is in my opinion a pretty tasteless film. I'd give it a 4/10.

Words can not describe how much I hated this film, I don't understand why it was so lauded. It's awfully dated, terribly written and the songs are complete and utter ****. The storyline is as cliched as they come and the performances were mediocre at best. It was just trash, complete and utter trash.

Easily the worst 'Oscar' film I've ever seen. Despised every moment of it's hackneyed ass.

I won't give it a score since there's not a score low enough to accurately describe the contempt I have for this film.

I loved it, It's not up there with Disney's best but it's a charming film with a mostly great soundtrack and one of the most likable princesses yet. I loved the visuals and my main complaint is that it could have done with being a little bit shorter, Some parts dragged a bit too much. Aside from that though, I think it's another great example of Disney's recent renaissance when it comes to animated films in general.

Dr. Strange

Loved the concept of it and the way they presented magic and I thought the film was enjoyable enough but it has all the same problems that nearly every Marvel film has, it ultimately has the same sarcastic tone that all Marvel films have regardless of setting or themes, the villain is simply an obstacle and not a character (Which is criminal in this case considering they wasted Mads Mikkelson on such a **** throwaway character) and a pointless love interest (Rachel McAdams is similarly wasted).

I also hate how Mordo simply turned into a villain at the drop of a hate, it was just so badly handled. It should have been a gradual process for him to descend into villainy not a nosedive.

Overall it's a good enough film but Marvel's tropes hold it back.

50 Shades Darker

Wife saw it at the cinema with friends and then from the description, I had to see it...

8/10 absolutely hilarious. Genuinely one of the funniest films I've seen in ages. The storyline is preposterous where it even exists, the acting is horrendous across the board, and it unironically uses the line "I'm not putting that in my butt! :( ". It jumps around from random scene to random scene and nothing actually happens at all, and then there's a helicopter crash near the end, and it just randomly occurs after a completely unrelated scene, and then everything is resolved and fine literally 3 minutes later :joker:. COMPLETELY bizarre and pointless. Also the sex is all tame and vanilla except there's occasionally a blindfold involved and mild spanking. Oh and he gets her to draw around his moobs with lipstick to show her "his boundaries". Gold.

It's especially annoying since I think Sunny Pawar deserved an actor nomination over Dev Patel, and I think the younger Chiron in Moonlight deserved a nomination too. Certainly over Mahershala Ali, who was in the movie for all of 3 minutes.

Just came back from watching Moonlight at the cinema. I really liked it.

I thought the transition from teenager to adult was quite strange, as I thought they did a good job of getting realistic actors from child to teenager. The moment between adult-Chiron and Kevin felt quite dettached from the rest of the film because of the choice of actors.

I would have liked to have seen more of Chiron's father-figure too. I was quite surprised that most of the film was centred around his sexuality and feelings towards Kevin. I was expecting more aside from that. It wasn't a detriment to the film at all though.

Beauty and the Beast

I'd say it's nearly as good as the original, There's a few things that are worse than the original (mostly the new takes on the classic songs) but there's also a lot of things it does better like the relationship between Belle and the Beast is better realised here and the characterisation in general is better. I also like that they fixed some of the original's more infamous plot holes (albeit it clumsily at times)

My more spoiler-y thoughts are

- The Enchantress's presence beyond the opening was unneeded, she didn't need to appear at the end and she shouldn't have been redeemed. I always considered her to be the second villain in the original and redeeming her felt odd considering how much more vicious her curse is in the remake, she literally sentences the servants to oblivion, she shouldn't get to be the hero in the end. I think the justification for why the servants were cursed was a little weak too.

- Loved the new songs, particularly Evermore. The new takes on old songs felt weak for the most part though. 'Belle' was pretty fantastic but the rest were sadly middling. 'Gaston' in particular was atrocious.

- I really loved the added backstories and some of the changes they made. Making Belle the inventor was a great move and they generally did a good job of modernising the Belle character. I have mixed feelings on Le Fou though, I did like how he was basically in love with his straight best friend and stuck because he knew there couldn't be anything there, that was very relatable, but I hated how they went a bit overboard to redeem him and the 'exclusively gay moment' was blown out of proportion. Also yay for Disney for having it's first interracial kiss (quite outrageous it's taken this long but better late than never I guess.)

- They did a good job of making the village seem like an awful place to live when, at worst in the original they were just a bit simple. When they destroyed her washing machine because she tried to teach the little girl how to read </3.

Overall though, I really loved it.

An ordeal, and not a great one. Can't fault Denzel or Viola's performances but oh god the Troy character is the most hideous I've seen in a long time. Loathed him. So I guess it made me feel. But oh god this was such a boring movie. 5 or 6/10 for not being objectively bad but I never want to watch it again.

I loved it

I like the way it did kind of the opposite in regards to Troy than what usually happens. Like you start off thinking he's a good guy really but he had a hard life and he can't express himself properly, i was fully expecting him to reconnect with Corey and sign the forms etc but no turns out he's a total c* *t after all. But yeah I really enjoyed the dialogues and the simplicity of it all. Denzel and Viola are amazing actors too

I think the Academy are often reluctant to nominate kids, it's a lot of pressure to put on them.

I kind of think it is because most of the Academy voters are actors, and if they nominate children, it makes it look like acting isn't the demanding and difficult skill that a lot people think it is, and anyone could do it.

I remember it being said that the girl who played Newt in Aliens hadn't done any acting of any description before - they specifically cast her ahead of trained child actors because of that - and she is completely convincing in the role.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

SO PROBLEMATIC.

The film itself is fine, it's a bit hollow in comparison to the original films since it downplays a lot of those film's philosophies but it looks pretty and it's watchable.

The whitewashing however is unforgivable though especially considering that ScarJo isn't just playing an american version of a japanese character, her character is ACTUALLY japanese in this version too and her name is revealed to be Mokoto Kusanagi like in the original and it's just uncomfortable.

I guess it was fine. Disliked the ending somewhat unless it means there are more coming, which is not happening, since this was the last one. It this was supposed to be the last one, everyone alive from the previous movies should have been featured (Where were Chris, Jill and Leon?) and Alice should have died imo. And Wesker was too much of a p***y in this one, a huge disappointment. Might have forgotten someone, but anyway. Now that i think of it, the movie was a bit of a disappointment. 3.0/5

Just watched Hidden Figures. I had this down as a bit of an award-fisher film... ie. not that brilliant but of the right political sensibility. But it really wowed me... might be my favourite of the (admittedly) few I've seen so far up for the top prizes.

Only faults I found with it were petty ones: I didn't think Pharrell curated a particularly good soundtrack and it came across as a vanity project for a man who hasn't released anything good in over five years (I enjoyed the classic songs a heck of a lot more). And also... please don't make me watch anything with Jim Parsons in it. At least now I can add "reminds me of a racist" to my list of reasons why I loathe The Big Bang Theory.

But the positives were endless... Janelle and Taraji in particular were brilliant (I liked Octavia too, but felt her character and screentime was a little undercooked... no biggie though). The scenes with Katherine's proposal at dinner, Mary's speech to try and get into West Virginia, Katherine putting her girls to bed had me a bit emotional. The depiction of Glenn's orbit was tense (also Glen Powell is a bit...:flutter:). Kirsten Dunst played the ignorance and stubbornness brilliantly too, I felt, and of course Kevin Costner and Mahershala Ali's characters were lovely in their own ways.

I'd give the film a fairly solid 9... I haven't seen many of its contenders but it's definitely a great film. Good mix of humour, drama, suspense and pathos.

The Fate of the Furious - 5/10

Some cool scenes and the cast was great as always but I feel like this one was just too far fetched... yes, even more so than the first 7. They're usually about heists/stopping a criminal enterprise but this one was eseentially about stopping a world war. Didn't really work for me, despite still being enjoyable.

Went in thinking it was going to be horrendous because of the reviews, but was surprised. I enjoyed it. Sort of like Lord of the Rings meets a Guy Ritchie London gangster movie, funny in parts. David Beckham's cameo was rubbish though and I reckon that's why it's got some of the bad reviews even though he's in it for about a minute I doubt people have it much chance after that, the film didn't need it for the promo and it backfired

Loads of cgi which I usually don't like but I didn't mind it so much in this because you just have to not judge it as a normal serious movie. Reckon it will be a cult classic in about 10 years, kind of hope there's a sequel but their won't be seeing how much it failed at the box office

I'd go 8/10. Doesn't deserve the low turnout it's received

I did really enjoy it but I thought the pacing was off slightly? Most Marvel films have a really good "flow" to them. I don't know if maybe it was running long so they had to make some cuts? e.g. Batman vs Superman cinema cut suffered the same problems with jumping between scenes, and most of that was much improved in the director's cut (which added about 35 mins to the run time...).

I actually thought the main issue was the inclusion of Nebula, she felt shoehorned in (there literally is no plot point she's involved in that couldn't have been done more or less exactly the same without her) and, perhaps, the effort to include her is what made it feel over-cluttered? The sisters are important to the overarching Thanos storyline and so they sort of had to include her to further that for later films... but I think that was potentially a drain on this one as an individual movie. The focus would have been better if it was kept on the main plot elements: Starlord / Ego, Starlord / Yondu. There were already plenty of more relevant side-stories with Drax / Mantis, Starlord / Gamora and Rocket / Yondu.

Plus Baby Groot stole the show and the mid-credits scene shows that he's gone now :bawling:. (If you didn't stay for it - it showed Starlord having a disagreement with a sarcastic teenage-Groot).

I demand more Baby Groot :fist:

Oh yes I did see it, Gav and my son are mad marvel enthusiasts we never leave the cinema till it's absolutely 100% finished. I was upset about that too :'(

I see your point about nebula, they could have just given her a scene at the end if they wanted her to play a more central role in the next film

Wonder Woman

It's brilliant and it has a lot of heart that the other DCEU films lack. It's well written and Diana as a character is well realised, I honestly believe that Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is more true to the spirit of the character than most comic book versions of the past few years.

Gal Gadot (and Wonder Woman) was the MVP of Batman vs Superman and it's no different here. If Warner Bros are smart, they'll centre future DC films around Wonder Woman because Snyder's Superman is a robot and they've already ruined Batman by making him a killer.

My only issue with the film is that the villains are a bit underdeveloped which is a real shame as the conflict of WW1 is really well done but the villains were just kind of there but it doesn't really affect the film much in all honesty.

DC need to lock down Patty Jenkins to direct other DC films because she's the cure to the Snyderitis that's tainted the DCEU.

Okja - it starts off really light hearted but it just sort of gets darker and darker :worry: still really enjoyed it though 8/10

The Witch (2015)
8/10 > slow burner it was eerie in places and the ending was good

Maze Runner 2: The Scorch Trials (2015)
7/10 > nowhere near as good as the first, it just felt stop start throughout hopefully the third film will be better

They (2002)
6/10 > not Craven's best but it was decent, the actress who plays the main character was unintentionally hilarious with her OTT reactions

Baby Driver - 10/10

I rarely give 10's but this film is really one of a kind. So different to anything else out there. Go see it.

Went to see The Mummy at the cinema today, I didn't pick it but I was up for it anyway. The effects were cool but the story didn't keep me engaged at all. I ended up sleeping for the last 30 minutes. :joker: I'd give a 6/10 to what I watched of it.

John Wick 2. Enjoyed it just as much as the first one. I want to BE John Wick. Without the penis, naturally.

9/10

Gifted (2017) - just watched it now and it was quite compelling, the little girl was brilliant and it has Octavia Spencer in it, so it gets my full admiration  Nothing too groundbreaking or surprising plot-wise, but nevertheless a good film to watch! I recommend
