…Wakefield……it was really intense, really condensed and very, very long for a storyline that didn’t really have a storyline…other than a weird/unlikeable and probably a bit of a psychopath personality with Bryan Cranston’s character…yeah, it was just weird really…I like ‘character/people’ movies that are all about the intensity of someone but this wasn’t very likeable …4/10 I guess, difficult to rate but easy to forget …

…Bryan Cranston did a good job though…

Extremely watchable .. to my surprise

7.5 / 10

Interesting

Jack Henry Quaid is the son of actors Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid and was fantastic

Jack Nicholson’s son was exceptional as a psychopathic criminal .

…Steve……Cillian Murphy is always such a mesmerising actor and tends to dominate the screen but in this film he’s outstanding as the head of a school for delinquent young men…and his character not only struggles with the mental health of those young people but with his own mental health and addictions…Tracy Ullman is superb, as is Emily Watson and Jay Lycurgo as Shy……Cillian Murphy as Steve, though…outstanding…8.5/10…

From a second hand DVD sale at a church in Norfolk I was taken to, to visit, I got a copy of

Saving Mr Banks

Apparently the story behind the making of the Disney film, Mary Poppins. I have to rate it 7/10 because it was a sanitised for Disney version of the truth. As a member of the Travis family put out, it was the second time that Pamela Travis was stiffed

Surprisingly good! Though it was perhaps starting to wear out its welcome a little by the time the twist finally arrived (which I have to say, I called pretty early), I still really enjoyed the characters and the choice to do nonlinear storytelling, which is fairly uncommon in the horror genre. I also love that the subject matter of the movie is witches, which aren't tackled enough in the genre for my liking. At the moment, the only other example I can think of off the top of my head is Suspiria. Aunt Gladys is one of modern horror's best new villains IMO.

Sea of Sand. 1958. Watched it yesterday afternoon. I LOVE old British films, especially old British war films. This one was about the Long Range Desert Group in North Africa in WW2. Studded with stars including Richrd Attenborough, Michael Craig, John Gregson Vincent Ball. 9/10

Mrs Miniver 1942. This film won loads of oscars including best picture and best female lead for Greer Garson. It was really made to show the USA, who had just entered WW2, that their entry into the war was warranted. It was called in the trailer "the most important film in a decade". It's a masterpiece. 9/10

Play Dirty. Mark Wahlberg. A decent car chasey, shoot-em-up. I find his films kind of watchable and this was half decent although not his best by a long chalk. 6/10

Hey. This movie is free on Prime, at least on my end. It's a great movie with an excellent cast. It's a bit sad but holds interest. It would be interesting to someone that is interested in US politics to an extent. Tom Cruise is great in it.

Over the past few days I watched china moon with Madeleine Stowe. It's not talked about enough how gorgeous she was. Anyway it's one of those thrillers where it seems like one person did a crime however there's lots of twists and turns and everyone is ratchet

Movie 43-too much American gross humour. I stopped watching after 20 minutes.

I was not amused.

I mean Hugh Jackman had a scrotum as Adam's apple and Kate Winslet's character couldn't stand it on a date and lots of other American nonsense. Halle berry is in it too. It's a good ensemble cast. Maybe one day I'll give it another try

Cold water on ITV player with the great Andrew Lincoln.
He's such a puddy in this thriller. So frustrating. You will shout at him via the tv. :bawling:This version of him would never survive in the walking dead

Fierce Creatures (1997)

My first time watching it and I couldn't understand why it's so slated. My best guess is that it's because the romantic aspect between Cleese and JLC isn't given nearly as much depth or focus as the romance that their characters share in A Fish Called Wanda. But even despite that, I thought the film was hilariously farcical in the same way Fawlty Towers often was. You could even be forgiven for thinking the last half hour was a Fawlty Towers movie tbh. I had a lot of fun with it, that's all I know. Hilarious.

It's takes two 1988. Terrible, might've been a product of its time.

Mid 30s guys is about to get married in 2 days and gets some sort of mid life crisis where he suddenly wants a fast car. Disappears in pursuit of some fast car and meets a blonde who's a bit weird but leaves you to wonder if she's real or a figment of his imagination also because some scenes seem like a dream sequence . Anyways she sells him a dodgy car, they sleep together. Meanwhile his bride is over there planning the wedding. He's mia during wedding rehearsal, embarrassing her in front of family and friends but at least he's honest about the fact that he's away chasing a car. She is patient and forgiving because they're high school sweethearts. On wedding day he's late. Bride goes on the podium and is about to announce to everyone that the wedding is gonna be cancelled then he shows up mid way in a leather jacket and jeans looking greasy and without a word just an ear pull that's their secret language it's back on, he's forgiven. Accepts the vows looking all greasy!! We're supposed to feel all mushy and happy when he was an absentee jerk all movie and cheating on her????

THE HECK!!!!

Also began Knight of cups with Christian Balr and Natalie Portman! What in the hell. Didn't last 10 minutes! Weird as heck! Not sure if they're going for "he's high and this is what he's experiencing" type of thing but weird as hell!!

…I watched a movie called Novocaine…well I didn’t watch it all though but I did watch quite a bit of it because it was…well, quite watchable…but the violence/torture violence just got quite overwhelming and I switched to something else…it was just too distracting and for me what have been very watchable to not have that so graphically…

Ooh similar reason why I'm not keen on finishing ed gein. So dark.

It was fun and lighthearted.

The Getaway with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger... again. Love this movie. They were such a hot couple. My type of movie-us against the world, dirt roads, crime, loyalty, backstabbing, hotness, 90s soundtrack. I could watch this movie over and over again and I have lol. 10/10 (the world might disagree but )

I also love Fair Game with Cindy Crawford and William Baldwin for the same reason.

Watch the Skies, a Swedish sci fi film. I expected to see the dubbing not quite matching the lips of the actors, but they appeared to be speaking English. I wondered if they'd filmed two versions, one in Swedish and one in English, but no... As it turns out, it's the first film to use AI to match the actor's lips to the language it's being dubbed into. I thought that was an interesting fact... and it wasn't a bad film either. 7.5/10

Speaking of sex scenes, I watched Sinners last night.

The first sex scene between Michael B. Jordan and the chubby woman was something that was not on my bingo card, and something that I wish to never see again.:joker:

I always thought that sex scenes were supposed to be fan service?:joker:

The sex scene with the pretty woman (I don't know her name) and Michael B. Jordan makes more sense as to why it was included in the Film, until she wants him to taste her drool.:umm2:

And the other sex scene where the Musician guy wants to taste this other woman's Vagina, even though she had said just prior that she wasn't sure if down below was clean, was really revolting as well.:yuk:

By default the drool scene was probably the best sex scene in the Film because of the fact that the woman was actually good looking lol, but your best sex scene shouldn't be a drooling scene like wtf!?:joker:

The rest of the Film was a bit of a mix bag for me tbh. There was definitely some creative ideas in there which makes me glad that the Film was made, and there were some strong acting performances and stuff.

But some of the execution could've been better, without spoiling certain aspects of the Film, I do believe that there were some plot contrivance at certain points in the Film.

I personally would score the Film a 6/10 as it was creative, but had a lot of flaws imo.

I spent all weekend doing absolutely nothing but watching movies and I loved it. Now it's Monday again :bawling:

The minute you wake up dead with Morgan Freeman. Tbh no idea what was going on with this film.

Seemed like there were several villains but not quite sure what they were after. After one character that appeared to be the villain was killed, the film went on and on and I honestly stopped following at that point but wondered why the film still went on when it seemed the main villain was killed. Haven't got a clue why all that killing occurred.

Dark crimes with Jim Carrey. Dark role, not the usual comedic roles. Anyway it's one of those you really have to pay attention to every second to understand what is going on...I didn't! I went back to Wikipedia after to understand what I just watched but once you understand what it's about it's cool.

I love Highlander. One of the ultimate eighties films imo. Not in terms of its quality, but in terms of its gritty eighties NYC vibes. And the soundtrack from Queen (which is also basically the function that their album A Kind of Magic provides) is the cherry on top. Would you believe I've never properly seen any of the other movies or the tv series? I did start Highlander II (wildly regarded as one of the worst films ever made), but gave up about twenty minutes in.

EDIT - Oh, and I watched a single episode of the series because Joan Jett was guest starring.

My viewing of the movie was my first exposure to Highlander, apart from cultural osmosis and the Queen album.

I really enjoyed it, but I felt like, in a way I can't put my finger on, that the script was one or two drafts short? Or maybe that some "connective tissue" was left on the cutting room floor?

I'm not even sure why or what I mean

But it made me want to consume more Highlander media - even the second film!

…Jay Kelly……it definitely read like a me type of movie and such a terrific cast also with Adam Sandler…(…who was excellent…)…and Emily Mortimer and Riley Keough and Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup and Laura Dern and Jim Broadbent and just an endless list of glorious talents…but somehow, even with all of those it just felt quite a bit like a George Clooney ego project and ‘walking through his life’ or being led through his life/career etc…?…it all felt quite empty and hollow, which is maybe the point but that’s how it left me feeling also, nothing really giving that much thought…4/10 just because it wasn’t for me, but a great cast…

Ah that’s disappointing. Been looking forward to this. I’ll give it a go and see.

Finally caught One Battle After Another and it genuinely might be one of the best films I’ve ever seen, definitely the best in recent memory anyway.

I really loved it. Was funny, tense, loads of action, thrilling. The big car chase scene was epic.

Paul Thomas Anderson finally went “big budget” and made a blockbuster action movie and it really paid off - whilst still keeping the trademark quirkiness and stunning cinematography of his previous work.

…yeah, let me know what you think…it definitely has that old fashioned type Hollywood vibe that I know that you love and visually…?..there are some very gorgeous bits but for me in substance and depth, it’s just a hollow…something that promised/with everything in its right place but just didn’t get there…

Lady and the Tramp (2019)

such a lovely film, and honestly live action is on par as amazing as the original animated film was :flutter:

IT (1990)

It's true to say that the modern adaptation is probably superior overall, but Tim Curry is unquestionably a better Pennywise than Skarsgard imo, who has benefit of the CGI doing a lot of the heavy lifting to get him by.

…Relay……it was just one of those random finds/movies and actually was very good, really zipped along very well…about a ‘fixer’ who helps whistleblowers and helps to protect them… Riz Ahmed and Lily James/both very good as their characters…7.5/10…

…also watched Oh. What. Fun Christmas movie with Michelle Pfeiffer…it was so full of cliches and corniness so a perfect Christmas movie…6/10…

Do you know I don't think I've ever seen the Bruce Willis Death Wish. I always forget it even exists tbh. I have seen Death Sentence (2007) with Kevin Bacon starring, and I think that's based on the sequel to the book that the OG Death Wish was based on. I'd recommend that. It's pretty fun. Neither are as good as watching Charles Bronson act the hardman though. :hee:

Heartbreakers (2001) - A surprisingly cynical romantic comedy about a mother and daughter duo, played by Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt, trying to con Gene Hackman out of a fortune, and with a previous victim of their schemes, played by Ray Liotta, hot on their trail for revenge. I enjoyed it and it's certainly a funny movie, but was a bit disappointed at how a veteran actor like Gene Hackman wasn't used to his full potential, and was made to inhabit a role that was more of a comedic plot device than an actual character in his own right. Having said that, I did find myself surprisingly invested in the two romantic subplots between Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jason Lee, and Sigourney Weaver and Ray Liotta. Two very oddball pairings, but then isn't that also often true of real life.

I definitely prefer it to Glass Onion, but I still think that the first was the best as the suspects were better developed compared to the sequels imo.

…yeah I think for me that it was elevated a bit because it’s Bruce Willis and he’s always been such a watchable actor…I have a feeling that I had seen it before but other than the opening scenes, I couldn’t recall any of the detail…which is weird…

…Get Up Dead Man……I agree with Merry Mockmas in that I think the first movie remains my favourite but it all came together well and Glenn Close was her fabulous self…..7/10…

…F1 the movie……that was ok, actually…I’m not a huge Brad Pitt fan but I did enjoy all of the track scenes and it did zip by its two point something hours quite nicely…8/10…

…The Salt Path……what a very moving story and two very engaging actors in the lead roles……it was beautiful in spirit and heart and beautiful in its scenic surroundings and such a bond of love between two people…totslly absorbing…8/10…

…also watched Tinsel Town…a new Christmas movie with Keifer Sutherland who thought that he was coming to the UK for a big West End production play/rather than a small village pantomime …I started off thinking Oh Lord and by the end I was completely in love with the movie/story and every one of the characters…great cast, great story and full of Christmas warmth…7/10…

Love Lies Bleeding on Netflix. Absolutely bonkers movie, went places I never even imagined it would go but I should have expected the unexpected when I saw it was an A24 production. A really good surreal thriller, I enjoyed it a lot but be prepared to be like :omgno: many times throughout. :joker:

It’s set in the 80’s out in a hot, dusty desert town in (I think) New Mexico, Kirsten Stewart runs a gym and falls for a new muscly girl in town (the fantastic Katy O’Brian) who is travelling trying to make her way to Las Vegas to compete in a bodybuilding competition (she’s enormous). Long story short: chaos. The great Ed Harris plays an excellent baddie in this too, with incredible hair.

Almost felt in many ways like a Coen Brothers meets David Lynch meets early Tarantino movie. Crazy.

The Gentlemen. Rewatched. Guy Ritchie is a bit of a genius. Love this film, a fat old 10/10 from me. Colin Farrell kind of steals the show, although Hugh Grant is so awful, creepy and sleazy, he comes a close second.

…The Cut……I watched this on the flight and it was incredibly intense and harrowing and upsetting and just…a lot/too much…about fighters making the cut/or cutting their weight for a fight and Orlando Bloom’s character’s weight was very much over as he was a fighter being laid heavily for a comeback fight after many years out of the ring…I kept hoping throughout that somehow in the end it would leave elements of thought but it didn’t…it was just harrowing and brutal throughout…4/10…although that’s probably a bit harsh because the lead actors were very good in their character parts…

On the recommendation of a friend, The Jester (2023).

https://horrorcultfilms.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/the-jester.jpg

The evil Jester a good horror character but the rest of the movie, kinda sucks.

I struggled finishing it. Only 3.5 out of 10.

There is a Jester 2 (2025) and that one is supposed to be better.

Rear Window (1954)

A Hitchcock masterpiece, undoubtedly my favourite of his movies. Seen this film a fair few times over the years, it’s fantastic.

The story, the suspense, the enormous purpose-built set of New York apartments, the cast (Grace Kelly is unbelievably beautiful), the almost stationary viewpoint adding to the voyeuristic nature of it all where you almost feel like as a viewer you’re in the apartment watching and spying on all of the goings-on with James Stewart from his window. Brilliant.

Filmed in wonderful, vibrant technicolour too, doesn’t get much better.
