Babylon (2022) on Netflix. 8/10
It’s very long and very loud and batsh*t crazy at points. A lot of people absolutely hated it but I loved it. Fantastic cast (Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Jean Smart etc). STUNNING to look at too.
All about the crazy lifestyle and excesses of stars of 1920’s Hollywood, as movies went from silent to “talkies”.
Gladiator 2 is out a week tomorrow, I shall be going to give that a watch.

Dreadful film :notimpressed:, It was a rewatch ...as I don't remember watching it from the beginning the first time around. So thought I'd refresh my memory. And yep it's just as bad as I remembered.

Quite good. it's not what you probably think it is with a title like that :joker:
If you've seen it, and didn't already KNOW, how long did it take you to notice? For me it was the scene in the pub.

I watched Constantine a few days ago.
I really enjoyed it, it was a good 8.5-9/10 imo.
But then I am hiased towards anything with Keanu Reeves in it I think.:joker:
Went to the pictures this afternoon to see Gladiator II
Far better than I was expecting it to be. Enjoyed it very much.

Incantation (2022)
Taiwanese found-footage horror that becomes a little tedious with its nonlinear narrative attempting to mask a twist ending that's still ultimately kind of predictable from the get-go imo. Still, the creepy vibes and scares keep it entertaining enough to stick with it til the end.

I watched the mean girls remake ( 2024)
Ok they made it a musical which was fun...and had some quirky moments, but I still preferred the original 100% , and this version just felt like a pale imitation , with the odd swap around.
I found myself laughing the most ...at an old joke ( it figures ) from the original- the classic " she doesn't go here " , they added an extra flare to it ,but it was still the same funny joke :joker: .

No Time to Die.
Worst Bond film I've ever sat through. 2/10 - and that's for the Astons.
Secret Honor (1984)
It's an hour and a half of Philip Baker Hall performing an increasingly deranged and explosive monologue as Richard Nixon. Because of his passing resemblance to Nixon, he doesn't have to lean into being a caricature quite as much as, say, Anthony Hopkins, who, though also great actor, I feel had to lean into that caricature more on account of his total lack of resemblance to the genuine article. As to the cartoonishly loony acting of PBH (which isn't a slight against him), I don't believe Nixon would have ever truly acted quite like this IRL (even inebriated and in private). Therefore, I choose to look upon this as a thematic illustration of the conflict that was forever taking place at the very center of Nixon's being.
A Christmas Carol (2009), starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge. You wouldn't think it works, but it does. The uncanny valley effect of the 3D animation lends a real haunting quality to the story and reminds viewers of how dark and unsettling the Dickens story actually is. Probably my favourite adaptation of the tale.

lovely film, about Melody Brooks, a girl with cerebral palsy
stellar voice acting performance by Jennifer Aniston too (as Melody's inner voice)
also strong acting work by Judith Light, Rosemarie DeWitt
Trap (2024)
A really clever and darkly comedic thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. I've always thought of Josh Hartnett as being just a pretty face, and so his performance in this was kind of a revelation to me. It's so recent that I won't spoil the film like the trailer does, but all I'll say is that it's really fun and engaging to watch Josh Hartnett's character try to wriggle himself out of the tense situation he's found himself in.

Smile 2.
I wasn't a fan of the first film. It sort of lost its way midway through and I got very bored of it, and didn't finish the movie.
But Smile 2 was much better. I think that's largely down to Naomi Scott who I believed was the person she was portraying in the movie. She's a good actress who made her natural performance compelling.
I gave Smile 2 - a respectable 7.5 out of 10. :D

Vanessa, I gave it a big score of 7.5 not because it's brilliant but because it held my attention and the main actress was very good.
Even though I didn't see the original in its entirety I've heard the second one is much the same. Loads of critics too. But nonetheless I enjoyed it. Hope you do, too. :)

Watched Trap 2024 over two days because it was a long film, and I needed a break in the middle.
Movie starts out with a father and daughter attending a concert together, and we soon find out things are not what they seem. I did think this movie might be set in one place throughout its duration but it does move about a bit and with that it loses some credibility and does go a bit silly.
The ending is like a scene from any other standard horror movie when there's a nutter on the loose.
Err, I'll give it 6.5/10. :Dhttps://letsgotothemovies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/trap_ver2-2.jpg?w=640
Just seen Gladiator II and would give it a 7/10. Very entertaining at times and some brilliant battle scenes but the main character didn't do it for me either with his acting or his arc. The plot was a bit haphazard too and some of the dialogue was pretty clunky
Denzel Washington was great though

It was fun wasn't it? Great battle scenes. And Denzel
Smile 2
I'd have to rewatch the first one to see which I prefer, but I thought this new one was really engaging and interesting. Its scares are much fewer in number than the first one, but those scares are effective in creating a greater sense of unease and dread, I think. At times, however, it seems to forget it's a horror movie first and foremost, and instead veers off into being a slightly pretentious-seeming meditation on grief and trauma. Admittedly, that's the whole subtext of the Smile demon, but they lay it on a bit thick at times in this sequel.
Niamh.

I've watched the first two Terrifier's recently.
I have really enjoyed them, Art The Clown is becoming my modern day Jigsaw Killer replacement.:flutter:
And Lauren LaVera needs to be in that outfit for every single Terrifier Film that she appears in.
But seriously this series feels like a blend of the classic 80's Slasher Films meets Saw in terms of the psychological torment towards the victims, and of course the violence.
..13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi……a Michael Bay adaption of the true story of the Benghazi militant attack on the American diplomatic compound in 2012 …it was obviously gruelling and harrowing and intense and one of those movies/stories that you barely blink though…8/10…

I'm worried about the two lead actresses.
They look like they've been mainlining Ozempic, they're so gaunt and fragile looking.
And permanently spaced out. They're just weird. They take the film so seriously, as if it isn't just a fun Broadway musical :joker:

The supernatural and ghosts don't scare me one bit.
The only things in horror I do find scary - in fact very scary - are vampires and zombies. Whenever I have a nightmare it's either about one or the other, or both!
So a friend was telling me to watch an Irish horror film called Oddity (2024). I said it doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd enjoy or be scared by - BUT I downloaded it today, started watching it but found it very boring.
I hear a lot of people found this film very creepy. Not to me it wasn't. It wasn't scary one bit.
Based on what I personally thought, just 2/10.

Inglorious Basterds a couple of days ago.
A really good Film imo, especially the one that played Hans Landa, he stole every scene that he was in I thought.
Night Of The Comet 1984. 8/10.
Pretty easy watch, i remember seeing it years ago and thought it was average, but after seeing it again i enjoyed it much more. Classed as a horror/zombie ish film, but there's very little horror and very little "zombies". I dunno, i thought it was quite a sweet, and sad film.
Catherine Mary Stewart is out of this world beautiful too.
Under Paris……they definitely needed a bigger boat…was it a Shark de Triomphe or was it an Awffel Tower…a bit of both, really…it was gloriously corny but Sharks in Paris is always a good idea…6/10…

Don't Listen - I had to get used to the dubbing at first (I found out afterwards that it's a Spanish Film for any sub fans that might be interested in watching a Spanish Horror Movie) but I really enjoyed it overall.
- Strong pacing
- Creepy atmosphere without overdoing the jump scares.
- Surprisingly decent dubbing.
- And interesting lore.
It's on Netflix for anyone that is interested in watching it.

World War Z. Forgot what a good film it is. 8/10
Carry-On……I enjoyed it, it was a good thriller/action movie…it was billed as a ‘Die Hard’ equivalent movie, which it really wasn’t at all but that tends to create expectations which are quite hard to reach but it was a good film a storyline in its own right…it was good to see Jason Bateman in a darker role as well and being a thoroughly unpleasant person…7/10…

Gladiator 2 : Really enjoyed this, obviously it wasn't as good as the first but I wasn't expecting it to be, the first was near perfection but I still think it was a very worthy sequel, the cast was great, Denzel of course as he always is, the creepy twins were brilliant and I thought Paul Mescal was fantastic too, a tough act to follow in Russell really but he did well I thought 7.5/10
Heratic : very creepy and thought provoking. Hugh Grant plays a good creep 6.5/10

Deadpool and Wolverine.
I did not like.
It's all jokes and I found none of it funny. It annoyed me from the moment he hummed the Marvel theme.
Fight scenes that mean nothing, and story and cameos I didn't care about.

How did you rate Deadpool and Deadpool 2 out of interest ?

I didn't see the second one. I didn't really like the first one either, but don't remember it being wall-to-wall jokes.

…I haven’t seen Deadpool and Wolverine and I do like Wolverine/the character…but I really struggle with so many Ryan Reynolds characters…(…forgive me Zizu for I’m about to sin…)…but he just injects so much of his annoying, one trick pony, irritating self into a character so for me it’s difficult to get beyond that…hey, hey, look at me I’m Ryan Reynolds the irritant, type thing…I’m here to annoy you and spoil your movie for the next few hours or so…I mean no…no….

Really good picture.
I might like it more than I normally would because it makes me think of my uncle if he never got married aha - he likes to invite Jehova's Witnesses inside, talk them round in circles, and give them crises of faith

…Terminator: Dark Fate……I didn’t love it, it was ok, though…but it should have felt more than ok with Linda and Arnie back together in a Terminator movie…the storyline felt quite week and the action didn’t really feel very thrilling but it was ok …around a 6/10…

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998).

7/10 simply because I was entertained. But the movie is rubbish I'm told. :p
The day before I saw I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). That I liked less. Only 5.5/10 for that.
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71H0rzL+H4L._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg
The third movie doesn't have any good reviews so I might skip that one. :p

The Carry On...netflix, nice bit of fluff reminiscent of Die Hard

Van Helsing - I didn't get to watch all of it due to bad weather where I live cutting off the Internet (you've got to love the streaming age lol.)
But I did catch around 1 hour and 5 minutes of the Film, which I think is enough time to be able to form a reasonable opinion of a 2 hour Movie I think.
And to me it was an alright Film (it has a charm to it imo) but overall it isn't the best Film that I've seen in my Movie binge.
I would score the Film a 6/10 imo,and that's away from the terrible weather/Internet problems.

Meet me next Christmas, proper cute smaltz
…Pig……it was such a completely different movie/storyline but in a good way, I thought…Nicholas Cage didn’t do his overacting type self…(…which I also like…)…but this was just a very quiet and interesting character and essentially a lot about grief and finding a path beyond that grief…also about a truffle pig who became a ‘companion’, really….someone to ease that loneliness …I think 7.5/10, actually…I liked it….
…Ideal Home……I liked it, it was just easy and charming and sweet but it also had those touching moments as well…Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan worked well together and had good chemistry and yeah, just an easy movie/story that ticked along in sweet watch..6.5/10….

…The Good Nurse……a true terrifying story of many sudden hospital deaths and all surrounding one nurse …it’s horrific as to how much suspicion was evoked and yet not investigated until it continued and continued..great cast of Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain…just a very absorbing but disturbing story…8/10…

Nosferatu (2024)
Inevitably I tend to have mixed feelings when Dracula adaptations emphasise the romantic elements and turn it into far more of a demented love story (unrequited and abusive as it is in this iteration) than the original book, or even the 1922 movie for that matter, actually were. I find it cheapens the story a bit, personally. Still, putting those undecided feelings on that particular element aside, the craftsmanship that went into making it was masterfully done. Even a day later I still find myself thinking about it and replaying certain moments in my head, marvelling at the beauty of it all. It has staying power, regardless of your feelings on it.

…When You Finish Saving the World……Julianne Moore is just such an engrossing actress in any character that she plays……it’s one of those movies where the only storyline is about people and how they connect/disconnect…and the disconnection is between mother and son who is played by Finn Wolfhard, the actor who plays Mike in Stranger Things…the ‘non chemistry’ between them is perfectly cast…I loved the movie, there were so many aspects that I found interesting and just completely absorbing…but it’s very slow paced and feels a bit bleak in places so it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea…anyways…8/10 for me…

…oh, I think that I liked this when I watched…it was good to see Don Johnson playing…Don Johnson……but he played a good corrupt person and picked on the WRONG guy….it just felt like a good old fashioned story of power and corruption and the good citizen working against that …with the help of his very impressive Marine background skills, which was something that the corrupt hadn’t figured on and maybe thought that he would just accept quietly, the dish they were trying to serve…it was kick ass, I liked it…

From what I can remember, isn't it just that he figures out they're corrupt....so they don't like him? Also they took his cash and he won't back down.... They weren't expecting any sort of comeback, but he's ex marine. He has a high sense of moral justice. They don't.

There was some elaborate scheme they were doing with low level offenders, his cousin being one of them. Something about holding them for 90 days on charges that normally wouldn't involve prison so they could keep the bail money and finance their department because the government would close them down if they couldn't finance it themselves. He didn't care about exposing them or the money, only getting his cousin out of prison but then he got attacked and died in prison because the main guys money had been taken by the dodgy cops and he couldn't get him out on time so that's when he went crazy and found evidence to expose them

…yeah, for me that was the thing, that he wouldn’t back down…their corruption picked on ‘the wrong guy’ so their behaviour became more and more extreme which in turn surfaced his Marine skills and background etc…he had a huge sense of ‘right and justice’ and as much as he might have wanted a peaceful existence, he wasn’t going to allow this corruption…

Ah ok. Perhaps this would all tie together well if in the first scene they showed why they targeted him specifically on his bike. If at least there was a backstory like they knew who he was and that he had a lot of cash then it would make it a bit easier to follow. From what Niamh said, I sort of remember now that it was to do with keeping them for 90 days for the bail money.
That would explain the start. They targeted him,,, it's a small town, wanted him locked up for some low level crime for bail money.
They knocked him off his bike knowing they would find something to pin on him.
They just didn't know who they were messing with

Would really recommend watching this while still in cinemas. I don't think I've seen a film like it for ages. It's really sad and thought provoking but also hilarious at times, the characters are brilliant and it's really well acted. All done in an hour and a half too and leaves a lot unsaid but that's what makes it so good.
It Ends with Us
Should get an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, because it totally felt like one of those bland paperback romances you might buy in an airport lounge. To its credit, it held my attention for the entire 2 hours and 10 minute running time, though that might just be because I was trying to please a friend. So already it'd impressed me on that score. I'm not sure it was worth the controversy on the part of Blake Lively to falsify harrassment from her leading man/director, but it was okay. Suitably meh.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of unrealistic writing imo.
Obviously there is a balance between unrealistic writing for the sake of being entertaining, to being so unrealistic that it ends up breaking your immersion with the work.
But that's just my opinion.

Unbreakable - I really liked Mr. Glass/Samuel L. Jackson's character in the Film, and I did like the mystery around Bruce Willis being the only survivor from the Train accident (which isn't a spoiler, it's right at the beginning of the Film.)
I did have issues with nearly all of the Family Drama scenes though, definitely not M. Night Shyamalan's strength imo.
May he never do them again.
In the Valley of Elah….…this is not a ‘happy’ film at all…there is nothing in it that isn’t very harrowing…you just can’t imagine and wouldn’t ever want to, imagine what the lead characters of Joan and Hank would feel…although it’s not billed as based on a true story, I have read up that it was inspired by a true case with so many similarities to the details…which just heightens that emotion and heartbreak of the whole situation and makes it more powerful…excellent casting and such a powerful performance from Tommy Lee Jones and also Charlize Theron, particularly…8.5/10….

True. It's nice to have some escapism via movies and that's usually what it is for me. I suppose I'm tired cause I'm single and I'm tired of movies making it as easy as you bump into a guy or he stares at you from across the room and suddenly you have a deep connection. Alien: Romulus
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!
this is a masterpiece, redeeming the alien franchise by far, compared to Prometheus, Alien: Covenant
also that tribute to Ian Holm  also a nice finishing touch considering his character Ash was crucial in the first Alien film
the acting work
well some nice easter eggs towards the first alien films, similar phrases as Ellen Ripley towards the xenomorph, from Rain Carradine and also Andy
the plot in the film Prometheus now makes more sense regarding the black blood also the fate of the xenomorph from the first alien has been revealed, to have been recovered by the Renaissance station + also revealed that the xeno's are capable of surviving in outer space
loved it, i am already excited now for the Alien: Earth series to come this summer
also revealed that the xeno's are capable of surviving in outer space
I mean Aliens alreadiy did that, what with the Queen stowing herself under the landing gear of the shuttle, near the end of the film.

I didn't bother going to the cinema and paying good money to see it, so I downloaded it last night for free, and as I expected, I didn't like it.
The movie is a pretentious non event. Like many horror movies today the hype is bigger than the enjoyment you may get out of it. I have seen many reviews on YouTube and one stuck out for being so pretentious I couldn't stop laughing how the reviewer called HorrorHands basically bowed down to everything in the movie and he said with a straight face he wished the movie had been longer than the 2 hours 16 it is. :D
He was sucked into the hype, like many other reviewers.
Let's start with what's wrong with it in my view. The story of Nosferatu is basically Dracula, going back through all the remakes, decades back, countless films. The story is almost unchanged, the scenes one by one the same. There are a few added scenes and characters which are meh and to me of no interest. Prententious and overrated, as is Skarsgård's heavy breathing chain smoking delivery. I didn't like him in this role. He's quite frankly awful.
Depp is there basically because she's the daughter of Johnny. Not a great actress.
The movie is dark, I kept looking for the brightness control. At times I wondered if it was partly shot in black and white. Nope, all colour apparently.
The movie not scary at all. Indeed I had more frights from the recent Salem's Lot version where one of the characters transforms into a vampire, and that movie got slated.
Nosferatu (2024) just 3/10.

There was a version of Nosferatu that also came out last year, but was filmed like seven years ago. It was much better, imo.
Directed by David Lee Fisher, with Doug Jones (below!) as Orlock.

Planning on seeing Wicked and another film next week, still choosing which one. Maybe Flight Risk. It has been a long time since I've set foot in a cinema.

Yes go for it. Cinema is great. I love it.
…You’re Cordially Invited……it felt kind of bland and mediocre and lacking in any chemistry between Reece Witherspoon and Will Ferrell for me/they’re both generally favourites of mine as well but it just didn’t work …I liked some of the other characters who for me, shone more brightly than the main characters and could have been bigger parts, some were just more quirky and watchable…5/10…

The Gentlemen with Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell and Matthew McConnaughey and Charlie Hunham.
Typical Gut Ritchie movie but Hugh Grant played a great part.
Worth a watch

….Hugh Grant always used to feel like he was playing that same ‘romcom’ type role/like the socially awkward Englishman but always got the lady he loved in the end…but he’s really broken out of that into some great roles…I liked him in The Gentleman, he brought the right comedic vibe to the role…but he also can play very convincing sinister and dark as well…

Yeah I completely agree Ammi. He was also good in Heretic too.

…Colin Farrell is just generally brilliant (…period…)…in every role he plays……I was thinking the other day that if we did get around to starting up the movie club again this year, I’d quite like a rewatch of Phone Booth…/…that might be the first movie that I saw him in and I’ve only watched it that one time…

Saturday Night - it was OK, interesting to see how chaotic it was trying to get the show started originally (Saturday Night Live) but those sketches they showed and the jokes were so unfunny. I think we both did a small laugh in one small part of one sketch [emoji23] 5.5/10
Conclave - it was a decent watch actually I laughed more at this one than Saturday night and it wasn't meant to be funny
when it was revealed that the new pope was intersex and probably a woman, I thought that was hilarious because earlier in the film when Cardinal Belini was telling the others what he stood for and he was saying gay rights and other Liberal ideals and then he says and woman should be more involved and the other Cardinal says woo maybe we won't mention the women being more involved part. And I'm like "oh that's where the line is huh? At woman?"
7/10

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's nest. We watched all three of the original Swedish films. Bloody brilliant... never seen them before nor read the books. 9/10 for all three.

Lost In Alaska (1952) Classic film, Bud Abbott & Lou Costello.
This movie is over 70 years old. So funny. My type of humour. Always loved the duo. :D

Shirley valentine just now. I love that movie so much. Never miss it lol. Do you think Shirley and Joe relocated to Greece together?

I've not seen them but I really like Noomi Rapace as an actress. So maybe I'll get around to them at some point. I didn't care much for the David Fincher remake, but last time I saw that was yeeeears ago. So maybe that's due a rewatch and hopefully a reevaluation.

I'd definitely recommend. Noomi Rapace is perfect as Lisbet... I really rate her as an actress too.
…Sound of Freedom……an incredibly intense and tense, powerful and difficult true story of Tim Ballard, an incredible ‘saviour’ and campaigner….8/10…
…Elevation……post apocalyptic giant bug-like creatures who don’t like heights, lots of adrenaline filled moments…a perfect Sunday afternoon movie…6.5/10….
…The Order……very tense and edge of the seat/thrilling ride based on a true story of a white supremacist group that aimed to overthrow the US government back in the 80’s….7/10….

Salem's Lot. This is probably the second remake of the original series that I've watched. Still think the original is scariest but this version was really good. 7.5/10
…Blood Father……it’s a long time since I’ve seen Mel Gibson in a kick ass character role…the storyline felt very off the shelf and more of what’s come before but it zipped along and was absolutely fine as a watch…6/10…

Bridget Jones Mad about the Boy
Classic Bridget, a major cheesefest, nice bit of nostalgia
…Cherry……such a completely absorbing story told in parts but there really is only two parts which are before PTSD and then after and the horrors experienced during military service…excellently cast and acted and just a harrowing story ….8/10…

Both remakes get the "Ralphie at the window" scene wrong. It was creepy in the first adaption because he was slow moving, almost hypnotic; and mostly normal looking (just a bit corpsey).
The glowing eyes and fast movements make it funny.

I agree. I kind of expected more from this latest remake as Stephen King was involved and James Wan, who I really like, was a producer.
Suspiria (2018)
Pretty damn good. It had a few new twists that helped further differentiate itself from the original (as if the stripped back aesthetics and radically different colour palette didn't do that already), but it also overstayed its welcome with a resolution to a new character and subplot that I simply didn't care about. I prefer the original film with its surreal atmosphere and hypnotically bright colours that combine to create a very trippy and spooky cinematic experience.
…The Gorge……really liked it a lot…Anya Taylor Joy and Miles Teller playing two highly trained brutal killers and assigned to protect some kind of gruesome master race of killing beings in a gorge, what’s not to like….and Sigourney Weaver as well trying to sneak in on the action…marvellous stuff…8/10….
