Watched Fear Streets 1 & 2 as well, really enjoyed them both, thought 2 was slightly better, looking forward to part 3 as well, I'd go with Ammi's ratings 8/10 for Part 1 and 8.5/10 for part 2

Has anyone seen this film? (it's on Netflix)

Finished it an hour ago and feel so sorta disturbed by it that I've been thinking about it ever since. A very bleak watch but the series of events seems almost believable with every characters actions and motives being understandable to some extent even when they're plainly wrong

Very well acted and atmospheric as well, haven't seen a film as unique as this for ages

…Fear Street Part 3: 1666…….I enjoyed this one so much..it would be easy to say it was my favourite……Sara Frier losing her hand was grisly, gory and grim but……and that each one was better than the last…?…but I think that it’s more that as the trilogy unfolded, each story gelled and weaved to make the complete thing…so them ‘getting better’ was just more that all 3 need to be watched…so I won’t do a rating just for this one, as I don’t think it’s a slightly higher 9…I’ll rate all 3 as a one trilogy and rate them as 8.5 for all because that was a great value watch…3 for 2 for 1 ….8.5/10….…they were a great idea that worked…..

…you might like it, it has a reasonable rating on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes…but I felt no connection with the characters at all and it really wasn't my thing…I forced myself to watch it to the end just because I don’t like to walk away from a movie without seeing it all the way through….

See here’s an example of what was talked about in another thread; Midsommar is an exceptionally well made film. The direction and staging is flawless… really gorgeous film, from an aesthetics standpoint.

However, not everyone will enjoy the plot and the characters are indeed… not very likeable… though I don’t think they’re supposed to be.

It was a solid 8/10 for me but my wife didn’t rate it at all.

…yeah, that’s why I said for Niamh to watch it herself, rather than pay heed to my rating because my rating came from a completely personal perspective…it was a visually beautiful film, I know…I mean, just the big yellow barn itself and all its ritual drawings and symbols inside…just stunning……and I did appreciate the ironies of the storyline as well ….especially…

…as Christian felt ‘drained’ and jolly well put out by the emotional support a partner would hope for from him and that Dani hoped from him…he just wanted the fun times and the romantic/sex times and isn’t that really the ‘perfect’ relationship that he wanted and his friends supported him to have…such ladz….well he definitely got exactly what he wanted in that barn, there was no emotional stuff for him to put up with for sure….oh irony indeed…but though…

…ritualistic killings are so devoid of everything, of any emotion…and when the emotion is taken away then the human aspect is taken away as well..(…for me..)…there is nothing to distract me and divert me…for instance with a serial killer plot, there are usually so many psychological aspects of the ‘mind of a killer’…?…again for me there have to be those because I guess that’s how I divert my attention as well from quite torturous and messed up killings…?…so without that it does become just messed up and torturous killings …even though I guess the balance attempted is by us not connecting with any of those people or the cult people, we’re always watching ‘from a distance, as horrified onlookers’…we never really attach is maybe the key but I just can’t do that, its not a movie for me…I actually really liked the beginning of it……but from the moment that the older couple jumped off the cliff and just about broke every bone in their body and then had their faces smashed in as an add on…?…I kind of felt that I might struggle a bit ….and I know that it might not make sense but maybe if I’d had the distraction of having characters or any one character that I felt connected to in trying to understand and in rooting for, I may have felt differently…but no….

..it was seriously just messed up in a pretty scenic surrounding….and those ever smiling cult people are really quite comparable to monsters who wear masks, which is a no, no for me as well because it masks all emotion and human quality…

Awful. It honestly felt like a make for TV remake of the original movie and whereas the original was obviously for a younger audience they managed to make it fun for adults too this one just felt like a kids movie but a bad one. LeBron James wasn't a patch on Michael Jordan. Don Cheadle was an awful bad guy too.

yesterday evening i watched 2067 (2020) starring Kodi Smit McPhee, sciencefiction timetravel movie, about being sent 400 years into the future trying to find a cure for earth's oxygen crisis

very enjoyable 9/10

and just now i had seen Vanquish (2021) starring Ruby Rose and Morgan Freeman, about a retired police officer who kidnaps a woman's daughter to get her to do some work for him, to tie up certain loose ends within criminal underworld

also very enjoyable, and even if Morgan gets older and older, his acting skills remain fab

…thank you…….I’ll give that one a miss for the moment…

…Jolt……the characters weren't hugely in depth…probably because it was only 90 minutes long so the whole thing felt very zipped through at full speed …it felt quite a lot as though it was a pilot type movie for a series…?..or at the least, it felt laid out for a follow up movie ….it just felt quite ‘condensed’ and low budget…anyways, though…I actually did enjoy it for what it was…Kate Beckingsale was perfectly cast and is always a great ‘tongue in cheek’ actress, so was perfect for the role….she kicked that ass when that ass needed kicking and looked amazing while she was kicking…Stanley Tucci is always a good addition to a movie …and the twist wasn’t WOW, it was a bit predictable…but it was all fun anyway…fun and fast moving and a fairly fine way to spend 90 minutes…6/10…

…Calibre……intense and heart wrenching and terrifying…

…I could not have predicted that ending…because the festival bonfire had been mentioned, I actually thought that Vaughn and Marcus were going to be burned alive on the bonfire…I found the ending really incredibly emotional because these were men who had mad horrendous choices, they were not horrendous men ….

…when Vaughn held his child before the credits and stared ahead, I thought that he was going to see Logan and the others through the window and that they had come for his son…a child for a child…?…

…Crawl…ridiculously silly …how many times did she get bitten and it just seemed to be surface type wounds and yet with other bit part actors, those bites were accurately precise and deadly and hugely entertaining with lots of jump moments…a perfect Saturday evening movie.…I really like Kaya Scodelario as an actress, I saw her recently in a series called Spinning Out and she’s someone who’s so very watchable and totally held you to the screen and to those gators snapping at her heels…anyways, don’t live in Florida in the rain, I think…is the moral of the story….great fun with sharp teeth and lots of holding breath moments of suspense so I think maybe a 7.5/10….

Spent the first half hour thinking it's a poor recreation of Indiana Jones, The Mummy etc those types or movies (even down to a comedy scene with a library ladder). But it got better as it went and I found it quite enjoyable. Jack Whitehall wasn't as annoying, Dwayne Johnson is always reliable and Emily Blunt is obviously great (although I'm finding her voice quite grating lately, she's developed a really irritatingly transatlantic accent that my ears can barely tolerate ).

…the story itself didn’t really offer anything that wasn’t predictable but it was still so emotional and so powerful to watch Prerna’s feeling of freedom as she skated….a simple thing that just broke through all of the chain’s that she felt binding her in the life she had and the life that had been ‘mapped’ for her…I love that the actual skate park that was built for the movie is one of India’s largest skate parks and is used by the children of that area every day and by professional skaters also …and that those competitions do take place as they did in the movie and it’s given children that real ‘breakout inspiration’ of being able to achieve…it isn’t just a dream, it’s something that’s become real through the movie’s power and legacy… ….

She's married to an American, that's what mixed-accent marriages end up doing. My (Scottish) and my wife's (Lancashire) accents have combined in both of us to create some sort of hybrid accent that has, bizarrely, resulted in people asking both of us separately if we're Irish. I've also had "where in Canada are you from"... FROM A CANADIAN PERSON. :umm2:

My theory is that it's the "celticness" of Scottish combined with the long vowels of Lancs.

…I didn’t realise that there were two Suicide Squad movies …Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad, how confusing…it’s been coming up on my Netflix watches and I’ve ignored it, thinking that I’ve seen it before but that’s another version….I’ll give it a watch now that I know…The one on Netlix is the old one

What is the truth :fist:.

Have to admit I’m inclined to believe that it’s OK since Niamh has confessed to liking the first Suicide Squad movie, which was barely watchable :hehe:I need you to watch it now [emoji28] no one told me they'd cast Patrick from Spongbob in it either

…The Girl in the Bathtub….…this was quite weird, it’s hard to know how to feel about it in a movie version like this….it’s something I could more imagine being an ‘unsolved crime’ and as an unsolved crime, it would probably spark lots of thoughts….a bit like the story of Elisa Lam…?…it was bleak, it was dark…there really was no light to be found in it but I was intrigued by the synopsis and it does hold your attention….with it also being a true story…?…it’s very difficult to rate because the ending can’t obviously be anything other than it was and the whole story couldn’t be anything other than it was ….I wanted to see it through and know the story …but…bleak….

There's definitely no studio butchery going on in this one, I feel. It's a lot more cohesive than the first. The first one is fun, but I think looking back, it was a mess.

I feel like the characters are better handled as well. It's a shame it's kinda bombed so far though, but I guess people aren't that excited about DC films given how they're more likely to be stinkers than winners these days.

They probably could do with a reboot at this point, WB needs to find their own Kevin Feige to shepherd a cohesive vision for the DC films really. They should keep a few of the actors on board (I honestly can't see anyone but Margot Robbie playing Harley these days), but they need to clear the board.

I agree although the thing with DC and multiverse is that they can soft-reboot without a full reboot which allows for keeping some actors on. Although, casual viewers (ok viewers who aren’t big ol’ geeks) might struggle to understand that sort of shift compared to full recasting. I think Momoa has really “owned” the Aquaman role too and made a believable superhero out of one that was thought of as a bit of a joke. I also think Cavill is a good superman, although I wouldn’t be totally against a new supes. The suit itself is iconic enough to carry the character.

I strongly suspect they’re doing Flashpoint or something Flashpointesque for The Flash movie so they may well be going down this route. There’s footage going about of them filming a chase scene from The Flash in George Square (Glasgow) recently and it features Batman on a bat-motorbike so pretty much confirmed there will be SOME sort of Batman in that movie - but I don’t think it’s Batfleck.

Porridge, with Ronnie Barker.

My Texan husband recently discovered the TV series and thinks it's the funniest thing he's ever seen, so we found the film. Although dated now, it is still very funny.

Affleck's gonna be in the Flash film, as well as Micheal Keaton. It's gonna be a very interesting film, since I reckon they will be rebooting and I hope they can do it well.

Hmm, I thought Affleck had huffed his way right out of the franchise :joker:. Maybe they enticed him back with a paycheck and a promise that the reason he's in it is to hand over to his replacement .

To be fair though I still think he plays "Batman on the brink of retirement" quite well in Justice League. It was just a bit of an odd decision to go straight into a DC "Movies Universe" with a "late stage" Batman who has already fought and beaten all of his major villains, met, fought alongside and lost his Robins, etc..

The Batman from the Flashpoint comic...
...Wasn't Bruce, but his father Thomas Wayne. In the Flashpoint universe, it was just Bruce who was killed in the mugging. Thomas became Batman, and Martha became
Joker.
Flashpoint is set "now", so Flashpoint Batman is kinda old. Despite being in an aborted timeline, he pops up now and then, trying to make Bruce retire from Batmanning so he can be happy.

Mirage - 8/10

Spanish and subbed, but Netflix does have an English dub if you prefer.

Back in the eighties, a 12 year old boy (Nico) witnesses a murder across the street. He runs out,and gets hit by a car. He used to film himself playing guitar, and had a big suitcase full of tapes.

In the present, a young couple (Vera and David) have moved into Nico's old home. Vera finds his old TV and tapes. They notice the timestamp shows the last tape was from that date, but in 1989.

A friend of the couple knew Nico as a boy, and tells them more about him.

Both of those nights -Nico dying, Vera finding the tapes- are connected by the start of a 72 hour electrical storm. So let's just say three hours into the storm in the present is "the same as" three hours into the storm in the past.

Affected by the story of Nico's death, Vera is re-watching the last tape on his old TV. But the parallel storms mean they can see and hear each other. She earns him that if he leaves the house, he will die.

The next morning, she wakes up to fix everything is different.......

Edited for clarity

Wow in the Flash TV show all that really changed was that he somehow inexplicably gender-swapped John Diggle's baby (Sara Diggle was replaced by John Diggle Jr). Although I think that was actually after he went back and undid it, and came back to find out that everything was "close" to back to normal but some minor changes had occurred that he couldn't fix (which served as a lesson blah blah blah). Although IIRC Oli Queen in post-Crisis Minecraft Creative Mode actually brought back Sara Diggle when he created Earth Prime and they now both exist as twins.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) 8/10

I first saw this at Tyneside Cinema and yesterday I got the DVD .and watched it. It traces the life of the rock band Queen and Freddie Mercury from 1970, when Freddie joined up to the Live Aid concert in 1985, with references to the death of Freddie Mercury in the early 1990's from AIDS.

It loses a point or so because of claims that it sanitized the life of Freddie Mercury. It is an interesting film for Queen fans, and shows some of the creative process for recording their iconic and groundbreaking hit, Bohemian Rhapsody. I would have liked to see a recreation of how the video was done, but suppose we can't have everything.

One point of note for the DVD, the extra it has is a recreation of the entire performance Queen did at Live Aid, of which only edited highlights made it to the film shown at the cinemas.

Dune, part one.
Absolutely brilliant. I didn't want it to end. I wanted more!
A very well deserved 10/10

I watched it yesterday, I think "wanting more" pretty much describes the main issue with the movie though. It's literally half a movie :joker:.

Coming from the perspective of someone who already knows the Dune story and it's scope, I actually don't even think dividing it in two was enough to capture the scale of the narrative... the first section of the story (from House Harkonnen getting the boot to the fall of House Atreides) is massively condensed here ... there's so much more lore with the Great Houses, and I'm pretty sure that House Atreides is meant to have been on Arrakis for a year or so before the full Harkonnen takeover. I was a bit unclear on the timeline in the film but it felt like it all happened very quickly? Basically I think it would take a full TV season to cover the story without it feeling rushed. I very much enjoyed the film but on balance, I'd have preferred a high-budget Game-of-Thrones-style TV series of Dune than movies. The lore is too expansive for films to do it justice.

But yeah going back to just the film as it is - I felt like it ended just as it was actually starting. The real story only begins with Paul Atreides joining the Fremen... as Zendaya said quite literally as the last line of the film.

Overall though I think it's a sort of brave narrative for a Hollywood film in 2021... the wider story is a scathing critique of religious extremism and dogma gone too far. The Fremen go full Jihad in the name of Paul Atreides, who is (very literally, as they sort of covered in this film) a false messiah... with the entire Fremen civilisation having been manipulated into a belief system surrounding him by the Bene Gesserit. tl;dr the Fremen are desert-dwelling religious zealots and "freedom fighters" ... and they're framed as the good guys.

I wonder how long they'll keep the series going? It descends into quite "hard" sci-fi in the later novels and the story spans thousands of years. Although also... regarding Jason Momoa...

For those who thought he died awful quickly in this for such a currently big-name actor, Duncan Idaho does still continue to play a big part in the saga. He wouldn't be in Dune Part 2 (though I suspect they'll find a way to include him, maybe flashbacks or visions) but after the first Dune novel, he does return, as a "ghola" or "ghost" (essentially, his body was recovered and cloned) who has been sent by some not-very-nice people as an assassin to kill Paul... but Paul manages to restore his memory so he is, effectively, resurrected. If they do make a trilogy I expect this to happen early in the 3rd movie. It's possible they'll rewrite that part and have him sent in Dune Part 2, maybe cloned by the Harkonnens (House Harkonnen has already fallen by the time he reappears in the books).

Dune - It was OK and yeah agree with TS, it was just like half a movie, more like a build up to (hopefully) the good stuff in part 2? meh 6/10

The thing is it's a very political/slow build story which is why I think it would make an amazing TV series. You could literally have had two or three hour-long episodes before they even landed on Arrakis ... establishing the Houses, the Bene Gesserit, Emperor Shaddam IV, Paul's relationships with Duke Leto, Duncan, Lady Jessica, Gurney Hallek etc. ... and I think vitally, much more depth into what the "spice" actually is and how important it is, how unique that makes Arrakis, etc.

But yeah ... basically I really like the Dune lore but think it would work far better as an extended narrative over a multi-season TV show.

Literally did what it said on the tin - “kills”. Basically just a filler movie between the previous and next (final) movie and a device to get the kill count ramped up.

Enjoyed the returns of original characters from the original Halloween movie though.

Not much story development at all and not a patch on the previous - hope the next is at that level, needs to be to go out with a satisfying, worthwhile ending to the series.

Not to alarm you but REALLY soon after my eldest's "hunger games" phase, she jumped both feet first into her "Attack on Titan" phase. So it was like 2 years between "sweet bunny friends", and " main character's mother being crushed to death and eaten by giant naked people".

Hunger Games is like a gateway drug.

Fantastic. And now I already fed the habit unknowingly :bored:

To be honest there are positives to just going with it - you don't have to watch just "kid stuff" any more, for one. A couple of years ago it was the computer-generated Addams Family... last year it was Hocus Pocus (which to be fair I still unironically like  ) but this year... At the weekend for Halloween we watched a South Korean zombie movie (called #Alive, Netflix, actually quite enjoyable). It's actually bizarre how much she's changed in a year. She hated subtitles and refused to watch anything with them a year ago - then she got into anime, then found out that most of the shows she likes are several seasons ahead in Japan and aren't dubbed into English yet, so now it's subtitles all day.

I've wanted to watch this film for years but at 4 hours long I've never really got round to it. Finally thought I would go for it last night and I was pretty disappointed. Don't know how you have a film that long and have so little character development - supposedly it's some poignant tale of friendship yet we barely see any real friendship between the main characters and 2 of the 4 gang just seem like extras  even after watching it for four hours I could barely tell you much about the film or recall any memorable scenes

Watched “They Look Like People” on Prime this morning. Really enjoyed it actually. Low-budget psychological horror but

more “psychological” than “horror” really. Quite an accurate and interesting look at schizophrenia - MUCH more so than how most films that try to portray it.

More specific spoilers spoilers follow, including ending spoilers that ruin the suspense;

i.e. they portray Wyatt as a relatively normal seeming guy the majority of the time, just one with paranoid ideas who hears voices and experiences visual disturbances sometimes, and he often shows self-awareness of his delusions but they “convince” him most of the time.

Also - crucially - he never actually harms anyone and the suggestion seems to be that when it comes right down to it, he isn’t capable of actually harming anyone, even himself. What made this one really fascinating for me was that it’s a horror film where no one, at all, actually gets hurt and ends on a really quite optimistic note.

Very much worth a watch, 8/10

Blade Of The Phantom Master - It's a Korean-Japanese Anime Film that's in a similar vain to Berserk and Claymore.

To me it's a 10/10 Film it had good characters, two interesting stories (especially the island stuff) the only unfortunate thing is the Film never got a sequel which it clearly needed at the time because it only felt like the story had just started.

Overall though great Film.

I tried to watch Dangerous, a 2021 movie starring Clint Eastwood's son, Scott.

I'm sorry to say I am a huge fan of Clint but his son couldn't act for toffee. He has just one expression, bewilderment. Perhaps because he can't believe he's getting paid to act. Also sorry to say Scott is only in movies because of his father. If it weren't for Clint, Scott wouldn't be in films.

But this film Dangerous was awful. I switched it off 30 minutes from the end. No point wasting any more time on it. It was dull, badly scripted and Scott's acting was appallingly bad.

Fascinating way of filming as well ..

Why did Sam Mendes make 1917 look like it was shot in a single, continuous take ?

The director wanted his World War I drama to feel more like “a ticking-clock thriller” than a war movie.

Just a brief warning that the final two Avengers movies won’t make a huge amount of sense without seeing (as a bare minimum) Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Doctor Strange Thor Ragnarok and maybe Ant Man 2. Actually you could probably skip Ant Man 2, the final Avengers film has enough exposition to figure out the basics of what happened there. Maybe even Ragnarok. But Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and Doctor Strange are sort of vital to a lot of the Infinity War and Endgame plot.

I’d say watch the first 2 and if you like them enough to continue, grab those two films before the final two :hee:.

Guardian of the Galaxy 1 is just a fun watch stand-alone anyway, lots of nice early 70’s music for you Alf.

Sonic The Hedgehog - It was so nice to watch something from Hollywood that's just fun. Yes it isn't the most profound story (which is to be expected) but it does what it sets out to do really well imo.

I'm giving the Film a 10/10, I really enjoyed the characters, the story for what it was and it did have a really good Sonic vibe to it imo.

But it was a big plus watching something made in Hollywood that weren't overly political or reveling in being depressing & joyless.

I’ve seen clips and it looks great .,

Did it need a remake though ?

The Matrix Resurrections.
It wasn't bad, I actually quite liked it
Was it as good as the original? No, but still enjoyable.

I love The Matrix, one of my all time favourite movies.
The two sequels are good fun as well.

In all honesty I have never watched the original, I remember it used to be regularly on at Christmas at Home but I never saw it through to the end. Didn't realise so many well known songs came from it :skull:

Bait (2012) australian-singaporean horror

starring Julian McMahon (Doctor Doom on Fantastic Four)

shark film, about when a tsunami hits the australian coast and it traps several people in a supermarket which gets flooded with 2 sharks, during a armed robbery

once again, this proves low budget films can be highly enjoyable to watch

Blue Jay on Netflix. Starting Sarah Paulson and Paul Duplass.

It’s about two high school sweethearts who run into each other again back in their hometown after years away. Shot completely in black and white in a sleepy, beautiful little town somewhere in the mountains and lakes of California with just the two of them in the whole movie besides I think one old shopkeeper early on.

Honestly nearly broke me. Really simple yet sweet, touching, heart-wrenching movie about life and all of the ups and downs that come with it, “what could have been” and regret.

9/10. Really good.
