Yeah. Also the scene in the caravan with Christopher Walken and Dennis HopperYou wouldnt be able to do that scene these days. There would be a backlash of outrage.

I know Tarantino does use the N word a lot but it's used loads in that film.

Yeah, I meant I didn't get the praise for it... it's the odds on favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar.

I thought the premise was a bit like Quantum Leap but this felt manic and incoherent to me. I couldn't wait for it to end.

It was good, not sure it's worthy of an Oscar though, I found it a bit vague in parts and I thought that was because it was based on a real person so they didn't have full stories/details but it's actually a fictional story so there's no excuse for that

Yeah me too, I was never a massive Elvis fan but it was interesting to hear his story as he's such an icon. It's very sad for such a massive star that he never toured outside of America. Playing years on end in Vegas for an artist like that must have been soul destroying

That's next on my list

Watched The Whale last night, it felt very much like watching a play, probably because there was only 6 actors in the whole thing and it was shot in just one location. That kind of made it feel more intense I think, the acting was fantastic, especially from Brendan Fraiser, Sadie Sink & Hong Chau. Really good film.

I watched Living last night, last of the movies that have an Actor nominated for best Actor(Bill Nighy) It was a really good film with a really nice message, I enjoyed it. 8/10

I have to say as much as I'd like one of the 2 Irish Actors to win I think Austin Butler probably deserves it most, I'd rank them :

Critics imo have to be taken with a huge pinch of salt as they have agendas a lot of the time, and even without agendas they're not very good at reviewing Movies that are a little bit different to what they normally like as a preference.

Like most Critics love really, really artsy and "sophisticated" things, according to them it's bad quality otherwise.

Disney's Pinocchio (2022)
7/10

Among the best of the Disney Remakes, though that obviously ain't saying much :joker:

All of the characters were good, Blue Fairy sounded beautiful, the film kept the "fairytale feel" quite well, etc.

My only real complaint would be it was a bit too long, none of the additions or changes from Disney's original really added anything.

Like, it was cute how Pinoc wouldn't talk to the girl from the show unless she used the puppet etc, but it wasn't better than more Fairy, and it didn't make for good pacing.

Speaking of pacing, some of the individual scenes aren't well paced. Like, Lampwick's transformation was a bit too quick and "matter of fact", while others (like the mallet on head scene) were a bit draggy.

Yes, a much better movie overall, it's a bit weird that they came out in the same year but knowing Del Toro it was probably on purpose :joker:.

It's more a re-imagining of the original book, though. Very different to the Disney interpretation.

Babylon (2022).

Flipping amazing, beautiful, rollercoaster epic of a movie that didn't make anywhere near as much noise as it should have and completely split opinion for whatever reason. How this didn't win big awards is crazy (cinematography, camera work and sets alone are mind blowing). Damien Chazelle is a master director.

Excellent movie with Tom Hanks in the lead role as Otto and his son plays the role of young Otto .

Oddly enough Otto is very similar to me or the other way around

Tbf I can't really argue against that.

Yesterday I watched Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

And tbh for the most part I thought it was a fun Film, yes the Film has it's "woke" elements, and imo the cute redhead could've done with a bigger role.

But all in all I actually liked the Film, in particular Simon, Edgin & Xenk from the heroes side were my favourites.

There is a fun antagonist performance in the Film as well, but I won't spoil that as the Film will make it fairly obvious who the villainous characters are anyway.

But yeah I liked the Film, it isn't the best Film ever made imo, but I thought that the Film was fun, which I'll gladly take.

If I were to score the Film out of 10, it would between a 7.5-8/10

I personally enjoyed it more than The Witcher, it felt better structured to me, especially as you go further into the Film.

I can't blame you with The Witcher btw, it had the potential to be Netflix's version of Berserk in tone and style, but it just doesn't meet the standard imo due to the Showrunner & Netflix wanting a Teen Fantasy flick, which The Witcher isn't meant to be from when I've seen my Brother play the Games.

Insidious: Red Door

7/10, maybe 8?

It was well acted, and great directorial debut for Patrick Wilson.

Recap of relevant past movies:
Dalton (eldest son) was an astral projector, and his spirit was being held captive in the astral realm. Spirits and demons were haunting the house, trying to possess his empty body.

Josh (the dad) had been an astral projector as a child, but an opportunist spirit of an evil drag queen had been trying to possess his body when it was empty during his astral trips, so he was hypnotised so he couldn't do it anymore.

His skill was unlocked, and his astral spirit went to rescue Dalton. But the ****** beat him back to his body, leaving Josh lost in the astral realm.

The drag queen used Josh's body to try and murder his wife and kids, but their psychic friend severed the ******'s connection to the real world, allowing Josh to re-take his own body.

Josh and Dalton were both hypnotised again so they could no longer astral project, and the family lived happily ever after.

I liked the lore in the new movie, and the continuation of the Lamberts' story- Josh was left jaded and distant by the hypnosis, and Dalton was afraid of the dark and moody.

Renee couldn't look at Josh without seeing the axe-wielding maniac, and despite being gaslit into thinking it had been a dream, their other son was traumatised and had night terrors.

When starting university, certain things start to unlock memories for Dalton, causing problems for both of them, dun dun DUUUUUNN ....

"Sound of Metal" (2019)

Me and Mrs Soldier randomly decided to watch this yesterday on a whim - exceptional film IMO. Very slow paced but not ever boring, brilliantly directed, really interesting cinematography especially sound design. The plot essentially is "An aspiring Metal drummer goes deaf" but the movie is packed with metaphors about love, co-dependence, addiction, acceptance and letting go... done in a way that's both clear and subtle at the same time - nothing feels preachy or shoehorned. 100% recommend.

"Talk To Me" (2022)

Interesting twist on the "ouija board" genre in that 1) it's an embalmed hand thing not a board and 2) it's an Australian movie... which makes a nice change from American and British accents on everything I guess.

I'd say a solid 7/10 in terms of horror films - I can be easily bored by them if they're too predictable. Definitely worth a watch.

Watched the live action Aladdin on Disney+ as youngest has taken a random liking to those Disney live action remakes :joker:. I actually quite enjoyed it for what it is. Jasmine sort of stole the show, Aladdin himself is fine but a bit flat, just not a leading actor tbh.

Will Smith was OK but Robin Williams is too much to expect anyone to live up to as the Genie. Will Smith was just blue Will Smith at the end of the day.

Songs were fun though and kids enjoyed it.

It's better than the live action Little Mermaid anyway, which they also enjoyed but I say was an absolute travesty! What did they do to Flounder??? I get making them a little more realistic but Sebastian was bad enough... Flounder... that's just a ****in' FISH.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society - Imo the Show is better, but it's still a really good Film.

I would've liked the Major to have been more present in the middle of the Film, but tbf she has a decent twist towards the end of the Film.

Always saw the trailer for this on practically every video release in the late nineties/early noughties, but until yesterday, had never actually watched it. It was decent family entertainment and I enjoyed it. Though it helps that to be a Michael Keaton fan in the first place.

…Girl Most Likely…the storyline itself didn’t hold anything new or original …but Kristen Wigg for me lifts any movie she’s in and the characters were fun and a lovely cast…oh, Annette Bening as well……7/10…

…Cold Pursuit…104yr old Liam Neeson kicking ass in the snow…it was what it was…6/10…

…Focus…slick crime/con artist flick…a bit predictable when the cons were coming but a fun movie …7.5/10….

…Belfast……it felt such a tender and gentle movie in parts and totally contrasting and navigating childhood and family love and the love for ‘home’…with the surroundings of living through ‘The Troubles’….to leave everything that is loved, a part of the heart that no other place on earth could ever bring in the same way…a place where ‘everyone knew your name’….or to stay and feel that maybe you won’t be able to protect your family but to know that a whole community will be there for them and watch out for them…those ‘roots’ that can never be felt anywhere else in the same way…everything bad and scary wrapped up in somewhere that holds so much love and so many precious memories as well…anyway I loved it, it was the reality that those living in and through those times must have felt…

…one really very emotional and joy filled bit….

…seeing them all at the cinema joyfully singing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang while their beloved Belfast raged outside of those cinema doors…just incredibly emotional but lovely…because it’s so easy to only recall those scarier and ‘worse times’….and forget that there were happy childhoods happening all around also…

…I’m going to say 10/10…very touching and very tender……

I watched this one the day before yesterday as well, all I'd heard about it before I saw it was that it was by the Obamas production company and there was people complaining about it on youtube because of one scene where

The daughter tells her dad to trust no one, especially white people. And you had alot of people saying "oh it's fine to be racist against white people these days" etc etc which tbf there does seem to be a bit of trend where this is definitely the case, I've watched some pretty awful TikToks like that HOWEVER that one clip people are playing is totally out of context, you'd really need to have watched the whole film to see how this makes sense for that character to say. It is a bit of a social commentary film packaged up in an Armageddon movie but imo it showed all the characters flaws not just "the white people"

Anyway I enjoyed it 8/10

I only like the first one. It was good.

I think the first three are each decent movies in their own way, for what they're going for. Three is the point where it tries veering off into comedy, but four sadly went back on that. I enjoyed the fifth entry for the 'so bad, it's good' factor, and also Doug Bradley. Six was admittedly just trash.

The original (and its remake) were both written by Alan B. McElroy, the same man who wrote Halloween 4, my favourite of the Halloween movies. :hehe:

…yeah, it’s one that really stays with you in thought, long after the movie is over…I think the ‘flat’ bit for me was just the ending of not being entirely certain that they all were reunited in the bunker…but I think the Obama’s input was interesting as well…/especially when connected with that ‘controversial’ quote because in the history of America, he was the only president of colour, hence the quote to not give power to white for me, would be anew beginning of an equal power being the only way forward this time…and with those two families, that’s how it would be for them…it’s sad though if that was a main media focus of the movie when there was so many things to take from it because it’s so reflective of our living world/planet today and how destroyed it’s becoming …one of the more sinister bits for me was the deer who were trying to warn and the flamingoes becoming misplaced also…anyway, yeah…it really hits on so many relevant things that we all think of almost daily….

….hmmmm, I’m not sure that it was all for the money though because in the bath scene when he was drinking the bath water after seeing Felix pleasure himself…that felt that his intention had been to have the love of Felix…but he then knew with Felix’ reaction to his lies, that would never be…it felt as though he wanted everything that Saltburn gave/including Felix, who was his obsession…but that Felix and Saltburn also represented everything dislikeable and damaging also…

Ammi
29-12-2023, 09:36 AM
…but yeah, maybe it was about the money and the power, type thing…that, that’s more what drove his sexual desires, rather than an obsession with Felix…?…hence the naked house tour in the ending….

Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)

I didn't like it as much when I was a kid, but over the years I've really grown to love it. Still probably the least good of the first three films, but miles better than the fourth and fifth movies imo. And maybe it's just because I watched With a Vengeance too many times, but lately I've found Die Harder to have more rewatch value for me.

A few days ago I watched the Death Note 2006 Live Action Movie, so I can't talk tbf.

I actually do think that the Death Note Film was decent tbf, not as good as the Anime (for starters it has a rougher start than the Anime) but it definitely is an entertaining watch, and I really liked the ending as it has a new twist that the Anime never did.

Obviously don't expect the twist to be really big, but I just thought that it was clever.

Overall I'd score the Film between a 7.5-8/10, it's in that range for me.

Ammi

…My Son……such a good cast and gripping storyline/plot…but the cast felt lost in what didn’t grip in the way that it should have and it all grew into an ending that just felt…flat…I read that it was made during COVID times so filmed with lots of restrictions and that would explain it…but maybe it would have been better to wait and honour the storyline well rather than to have a plot that just doesn’t come together but deserved to …5/10…

spoiler-free review from me

the acting once again stunning

we luv Queen Kate's reunion with Cameron and same as in titanic, such super solid acting work, very convincing

i always love Cliff Curtis btw, quite a underrated actor, i know him also from The Meg, Trauma as ''Rabbit - the medical helicopter pilot'' and i also liked him in Deep Rising

Sigourney Weaver voice acting as Kiri wow :worship: and as for her video footage material also nice and dream/eywa scene also solid acting work there

10/10

do want to give a higher score but i can't, i also liked it much more than the first one

now as for the heavy spoilers
the scenes with the Tulkun creatures look amazing up to the same standard of a david attenborough documentary vibe that amazing amount for details with the underwater scenes, we stan Payakan :flutter: for saving Lo'ak and allowing Lo'ak to bond with him

The Lodge……it was billed as a horror genre, I think, which isn’t a genre I’m drawn toward… but I liked the synopsis and I would say it’s an equally psychological thriller with horror sprinkles…it was totally absorbing and completely drew you into the story and characters….7.5/10….

Trapped……this was a 2002 movie but it’s one that I must have missed at the time and hadn’t noticed it on Amazon before…it was one of those ‘hidden gem’ type movies and a really tense thriller …plus Charlie’s Theron who is excellent…7.5/10….
