Yesterday I watched Rebel Moon Part One.

I actually liked it for the most part, yes the Film does follow Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life's lyrics of "people of the world" in the casting department, so for example members such as Alf and LT want to steer well clear of this Film.

And personally I do believe that there was a character that was underdeveloped in the Film, and without spoiling exactly who it is, they won't be returning for the sequel, which meant that the character was kind of a waste of time imo.

However I would say that I thought that the action was fun, the villain was really good (kudos to both Rebel Moon and Dune 2 for bringing back iconic villain performances again) and I do think that the Film establishes it's story and lore reasonably well.

Do I think that the Film is a masterpiece? No.

Do I think that the Film is over hated? Imo yes, there have been worse Films that I have seen over the years, a recent one for myself being The Conjuring.

And my Dad was saying that there should be a Video Game based on Rebel Moon, and whilst I agree with him that it could be a fun idea, I do also wonder how long it would take before the western Video Game developers would decide to make Sofia Boutella's character model look ugly? Because she is an attractive woman imo that could be marketed in a similar way to Lara Croft, but we all know what western developers are like today in the Video Game industry.

But if they could actually faithfully recreate the characters of Rebel Moon, then yeah I'd be with my Dad on cheerleading for a Video Game adaptation, the world is there for it after all.

Nope……it’s a bit of a slower paced sci fi/horror but it still brings that creepy vibe very nicely and I like that when it just more toys with you and not so in your face alien people…I liked the brother and sister two leads as well and their dynamic…all in all around a 7/10, I reckon…

Rock and Rule.

7/10

An animated film from the 80s, set in a post-apocalyptic world. It's okay, the best thing about it being the songs. Has performances by Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

8.5

very enjoyable, however i have to give some criticism here and there (yes shocking i know from someone usually positive about many things)
Kong's Armor, gave me transformers vibes

that said
the visuals once again stunning, especially Mothra's scenes near the end, and all of Godzilla's scenes, also a little funny with Godzilla sleeping in the collosseum in Rome

yes i liked it all in all

…I left it running in the background but that’s very much where it stayed as it didn’t catch or engage any attention at all…the soundtrack/theme song when it started up near the beginning was probably as high a highlight as it got for me…/…very disappointing for a sequel made so many years on from such an iconic movie franchise…although, I don’t think that any of the later ones matched the first one for me…

The film I've heard it be compared to most often is The Silence of the Lambs. So make of that what you will as far as the gore to actual scares ratio lol. Me personally, as far as the Hannibal movies, I always much preferred Manhunter.

Nicky91
09-07-2024, 04:27 PM
Silence of the Lambs, you gotta love Ted Levine's gorgeous acting in that as the serial killer

Stottlemeyer

he had a recent good acting role in Big Sky as Horst Kleinsasser, another bad guy role from him

tbh similar to that franchise, Big Sky also had a psychopatic villain in Ronald Pergman, which was such a detailed performance from Brian Geragthy, same how Hopkins put so much detail in the Hannibal Lecter character

I finally got around to watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F after people in here were talking about it the other day. I actually really enjoyed it. Thought it was a lot of fun. Did it set my world alight? Well no, obviously not. Were the obligatory woke moments here and there a bit groan inducing? Of course. But overall I had a lot of fun with it. Eddie Murphy's still got it imo. He was utterly hilarious. Disappointed we didn't get to see as much of Rosewood and Taggart as in the first few, but that was half-expected on my part.

I agree, Ammi. I liked it when it first came out, and there are still certain things about it that appeal to me, but overall I've massively cooled off on it and feel mixed about it at best. I do think it's tremendously overrated. I really dislike how every modern filmmaker seems so keen to suck all the fantastical and larger than life qualities out of the character and reduce it downt to being 'a crime movie that happens to have Batman in it'. It's been a problem since the Chris Nolan movies, good as they were. The Affleck stuff was admittedly a bit of a break from all that, but they were also shite.

The Burton movies are still closest to my ideal portrayal of Batman. Schumacher's Batman Forever is also pretty underrated imo.

Wonka - Much Better than I thought, and actually funny and whimsical, was a good cast aswell . Surprisingly Hugh Grant fitted in well as a Oompah Loompa .

The Holdovers - Interesting movie, Paul Giamatti & Da'Vine Joy Randolph very well cast . And I think this will be a breakthrough for Dominic Sessa. This movie was a mix of bittersweet drama & emotion.

Apocalypto. I remember coming out of a move and seeing the poster for this in the hallway of the cinema and being really intrigued. Regrettably, I was much too young to see it. And for whatever reason, I never felt that much enthusiasm to actually seek it out and watch it in all the years since, despite admittedly still being vaguely interested. Finally summoned up the energy to watch it this morning. Great, engaging film that held my interest for the entirety of its just over 2 hour length. Quite brutal and depresssing at times, but that's the nature of the beast when it's a film dealing with the fall of a civlisation and its supplanting by a technologically superior race.

…oh apologies, I’ve just seen this ChalkOutline….yeah, I’m really not sure what I thought of it because it just wasn’t what I expected and it didn’t feel…(…for me..)…as though it had any soul…that’s something that previous Batman movies/stories have always felt for me…I am now thinking, though…that maybe I should go back for a re-watch and see if it was just not what I expected but still a good movie …ughhhh, it’s so long, though…I’m not sure when I could give that time commitment again for a while….

…A History of Violence……I found it really intense and absorbing and Viggo Mortensen has come a long way since Aragorn days, he’s such a versatile and watchable/likeable actor…there was aspects of the storyline that was kind of…ok, we’ve been here before and nothing new to see, type thing…but I think it was a very layered movie in its characters and its storyline …it wasn't the action type movie that we often see with that type of story of someone having a past that those around them aren’t aware of…

…I liked how it explored that aspect of his son that was drawn to violence in his own reactions to the bully…having ‘violent capabilities’ that scared him, really…that he himself also ‘tried to avoid being in any situation of violence and always aimed for the passive responses…even without him having that past that his father had…just being scared of himself, really and what he felt was ‘inside him’….exploring an ‘inherent gene’…?….and that family connection also with Joey’s brother, Richie…hmmmm, the blood of violence running through the family…?…

…William Hurt was really underused in a way but also perfectly cast and just always excellent as his character…but yeah, very absorbing and a bit different from the movie it could have been and many have been that have gone before…8.5/10, I think…

The Deliverance - Awful film, not even slightly scary, too little of it is actually the horror part as well, mostly just all the characters arguing with each other. The actual horror parts are just funny really 4/10

I watched it at the weekend, I was really looking forward to it but I thought it was shite tbh, wasn't at all scary and couldn't warm to any of the characters enough to care about them, Gav thought the same. Seems we might be in the minority as it has gotten good reviews but

I liked it but I didn't love it. When thinking back on it, it's a movie I struggle to have strong feelings about either way. The bait and switch with regards to the plot and Cage's motivation was well done, but I didn't care for the twist of being a Satanic possession movie. Generally speaking, that's just not my kind of horror.

Similarly, I recently watched The First Omen after hearing such good things about it. I thought that was an overhyped piece of shite. The only great part was when Damien was finally born and the classic Jerry Goldsmith latin chant kicked in.

The Last Witch Hunter - I personally really enjoyed it.

Yes it probably could've done with a longer runtime to finesse certain areas of the plot.

But overall it was a solid 8/10 Movie for me, it had good action scenes, likable characters, and interesting lore.

Apparently a sequel is happening.

Fantastic movie! Another gem from A24.

…it was so incredibly moving how it showed grief ‘from the other side’, you know…not anger or unresolved or revenge or anything we see in stories that involve sudden and violent death…but just poor grief and confusion and completely lost…everything the living loved ones feel and go through but from the other side…I’ve never seen that done before and it was so emotional and how he portrayed and conveyed that to us so incredibly when we never even saw his face or heard a voice…it was just pure and raw….

…it was so layered I thought because other than the horror aspect, there was also that touching on Salem and all of the young females being completely innocent but so horrifically and horrendously treated and how the tragedy of it all was…as well as creating something evil where none had existed in the first place, for the horror story aspect…she wanted others to experience what she had suffered in her tortures and continued to suffer endlessly because what had been created was immortal suffering and pain….so tragic and horrifically sad…

Inside Out

Was decent. I mainly watched it because a friend said her therapist recommended it to her when she was in a bit of a slump and she wanted to share it with me. So that was my good deed for the day. Pixar's one of those cases where there's a special place in my heart for the stuff that came out when I was a child (e.g., Toy Story, A Bug's Life), but where I just can't summon up as much enthusiasm for the later stuff, no matter how good they might turn out to be. I liked Inside Out well enough, but I didn't love it.

Well, all I'll say is that I definitely didn't like it nearly as much as my friend. But sometimes you've got to pull your punches a bit when it's someone you care about, caring about something so deeply, etc.

On the other hand, all the Final Destination movies are fun in their own way. IIRC, the third movie is a fan favourite on account of all the black comedy in it. Growing up with the series, my personal favourite was the first movie and how seriously it took its premise. I'll have to rewatch them again at some point. So that could change. I think the second movie is usually held up as the series' pinnacle.

I started watching the new Salem's Lot movie 2022(24). It was okay for the first 15 minutes but it seems everything that was memorable about the 1979 mini series movie, has just been packed into this new remake.

What I mean by that, all the dialogue, the tension, the mystery, has been deleted in favour of a past paced story, which leaves you thinking why so fast?

I stopped watching it at 42 minutes. I will return to it, but it just moves so quickly from scene to scene it was getting on my nerves.

Yesterday was quite stressful and unpleasant for me, so after getting in from the night shift, I impulsively decided to put on Anger Management, an underrated Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson comedy that I love but haven't seen in over a decade. Made me laugh a lot.

Fantastic, disgusting, horrifying, poignant, brilliant. A modern horror classic.

Catch it while it’s still in the cinemas people - if you’re easily squeamish and don’t like blood/guts/gore maybe not though. :omgno:

I hope Demi Moore gets some awards for this!

…..Wolfs……a comedy thriller that didn’t really offer any thrilling bits or hit those smiles because it was all a bit too predictable and offered nothing new and just really chugged along ….Austin Abrams though was very endearing in his character, he’s not someone that I was that familiar with so it was an introduction to him……5/10…

Woman of the Hour on Netflix. Was just added yesterday

Starring (and directed by) Anna Kendrick, it’s based on the true story of American serial killer called Rodney Alcala who appeared on the show “The Dating Game” (Blind Date pretty much) back in the late 70’s during his killing spree. Anna plays the woman who picks him on the show.

I thought it was really great. 8/10.

…oh snap LaLaLand, I watched that yesterday evening too…

Woman of the Hour……obviously a chilling true story which was very well done as it really put is in the terrified place of his victims in those awful moments of realising the danger they were in…and also the helplessness…I mean, I really felt that…Rodney Alcala was maybe the original ‘incel’ but his ‘hate’ wasn’t spoken, he was also all charm, really…his victim count was horrendous…a terrifying story of a ‘monster’ and very well done…I think it deserves a 9/10 for his victims and to have that story told…

Terrifier 3.

I'm kind of mixed on the first two, but I had so much fun with this new one. The Christmas setting works perfectly for the movie and serves up a really warm and cozy backdrop for all the gore and mayhem to take place. For fans of black comedy, it's hilariously grim. The violence is so over the top as to be cartoonish and laugh out loud funny. I already think it's one of the better Christmas horror movies.

quite a lot of funny death scenes too

you kinda sympathize with the Killer Pumpkin somehow in a few sceneseven one moment when it was touching some carved pumpkins with its vines, shedding a tear along with it

also stars Chris Elliott (famous from being in many comedies, such as Groundhog Day) in one of his best roles to date, so very well in character, even with the accent and everything
