Former Coronation Street star John Savident has admitted that he was reluctant to leave the show.

The actor, who played Fred Elliott on the ITV1 soap for 12 years, decided to quit in 2006 because he wanted to spend more time with his family in Hertfordshire.

However, Savident has now revealed that he would have been willing to stick with the role if producers had given him a lighter workload.

"I did think they might find some way to accommodate me," he told The People. "Quite honestly I was surprised and disappointed that they didn't try a bit harder.

"I told them a year in advance that I was going and then they took me out for dinner and said, 'We're not going to insult you, John, by trying to make you stay'. And I'm sitting there thinking, 'Please, go on, insult me'."

Savident has also claimed that programme makers Granada had angered the show's cast by cutting back on bonuses.

"Granada were becoming increasingly mean. All the nice little extras that the cast enjoyed were being whittled away," he explained. "The subsistence allowance - basically for working away from home - only got paid for the first couple of years you were in the show, not for five, as it had been.

"Holiday pay was slashed. I think Liz Dawn, who played Vera Duckworth, was in floods of tears and someone like Bill Roache (Ken Barlow) must have lost a small fortune. And then Granada reduced the weekly retainer we got for showing 'loyalty' to the programme, from £470 to £100 a week. Loyalty clearly doesn't mean a thing now, especially in television."

The actor will return to screens with a new role on ITV1 crime drama Above Suspicion next weekend.

Coronation Street's Lloyd Mullaney has really come into his own over the past year. His friendship with business partner Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) has seen Lloyd caught up in Steve's ever-dramatic love life. However, 2009 marks the beginning of Lloyd's very own love affair - with his best mate's mum, Liz McDonald (Bev Callard). Here, DS chats to Craig Charles about finally being given a screen relationship, a potential family for Lloyd and Eileen's Rubix cube.

I bet you're pleased that Lloyd's finally been given a love interest!
"Yeah – it's been a while! I thought he was going to be a closet gay guy and end up with Sean!"

What was your reaction when they told you it'd be Liz?
"[Bev]'s a friend of me and my wife's, so it's all quite comfortable really. We get on really well, too. The relationship just opens up the whole scenario of Lloyd going out with his best mate's mum – and Steve definitely doesn't like it!"

What's Steve's reaction?
"He's not impressed in the slightest – he's just underwhelmed. There are some fantastic scenes between me and Simon [Gregson] in Lloyd's flat where Liz is hidden away behind the sofa, but Steve eventually finds out. There are some great lines being thrown at each other. It all ends quite tragically, though - but I won't give that away. It all ends on a sour note."

Do you think it's built to last? Do you think Liz has finally found the right man in Lloyd?
"I think Liz very much likes Lloyd and Lloyd's walking around with a smile on himself, too. I think they're both genuinely fond of each other and their friendship's been growing for a while now. It's one of those relationships that's been borne out of friendship."

She's been around the block a few times, hasn't she? Does that not put Lloyd off?
"I think that's what attracts Lloyd! In the Corrie world, he's very inexperienced."

What can we expect from Lloyd going into the New Year? We've not seen a lot of Lloyd over the past couple of years…
"I think a lot of that was to do with some of the problems I went through a few years ago. It was just a case of coming back and taking it easy and making sure I was well again. Then when I signed this new contract, Kim [Crowther] told me that they were going to bring Lloyd more central to the drama – and that's what she's done. I'm really enjoying it. It's exciting times for Lloyd."

Would you like to see any of Lloyd's family turn up in Weatherfield?
"Good question. I'd love a scally cousin or something like that who's on the run from the police. Him turning up in Weatherfield at Lloyd's flat would be an absolute corker story for me. It'd be nice to have a bit of family around Lloyd, but these things are all very much based on establishing the character first. That's how families in soaps have always worked best – establishing them one by one, as opposed to bringing in a load of new characters in at once. I wouldn't rule it out for the future because it's be great to see some of his family – a couple of 'fros on the Street wouldn't go amiss!"

Do you think Eileen's ever going to finish her Rubix cube?
"I can't give that one away! It's getting a bigger and bigger part, this Rubix cube…"

Coronation Street's Alison King has revealed her character Carla will never help Maria catch Tony.

Carla's husband Tony (Gray O'Brien) murdered Maria's husband Liam when he found out he was having an affair with Carla.

But Alison revealed that even when Carla starts to suspect Maria (Samia Smith) might be right to suspect Tony, she doesn't show her support.

Alison said: "Carla gets suspicious of Tony and starts to ask questions. She does come round and think maybe Maria's not so deluded after all maybe she's got a point.

"So she goes round to see Maria but she doesn't let it slip to Maria that she's having doubts herself. She just asks why Maria thinks what she does to get more out of her so she can carry on her own little investigation."

But at the moment evil Tony has Carla and everyone else on the street thinking Maria is mad.

Alison said: "Carla just gets really mad with Maria because she just thinks Maria's making it up and she's going bonkers and accusing her husband. She can't see any reason for that to be true at all and he's being very nice to Maria so he's kind of fooling everybody to an extent.

"She just thinks bonkers brain hairdresser woman is just aggravating her so she's really against her and that helps I think, with Tony."

Coronation Street has had it's ups and downs this year, everyone will certainly agree on that. Sue's posted her highlights of the year today and I thought about doing that as well but instead I'm going to focus on more recent events and look to the future. for me, this December has been outstanding. I started thinking about this after I finished watching the double episode on Friday, December 19 which showcased Peter Barlow's drunken rampages through the Christmas Nativity at Simon's school and his inebriated tirades against his father, accusing Ken of being the worst father while simulataneously swigging from a bottle of booze. Irony, anyone? The episodes showing how his alcoholism was affecting his work relationship with Leanne, his family members including a rarely seen vulnerable Blanche, and how booze is affecting his social interactions by getting thrown out of the school and the bar were really powerful. They are really examining this issue more closely than they ever have in the past and it's about time, too. A show that has a pub as it's heart that has not really delved the depths of drink problem for more than a brief moment or two seems out of touch.

03_12_maria-rosie-sally.jpgElsewhere we have the pressure on Tony Gordon increasing. After a sumptuous wedding after which a drunken and belligerent Sally Webster spilled the video pixels to the Widow Connor, revealing that her late husband was caught kissing the Black Widow Connor-newly-married-Missus Gordon, Maria (Samia Smith acting her little socks off) has correctly figured out that Carla and Liam had an affair, Tony knew about it and had Liam killed. Everyone thinks, with plenty of help from Tony, that she's just mad with grief. (I do think we need to see what Ryan's reaction to Maria's ravings is, but he's hardly been seen since the funeral.)

Add Jed Stone to the mix, a substantial thorn in Tony's side, one whom people *will* believe poses a greater threat and had to be silenced. Tony is starting to unravel at the end of a long tightly wrapped storyline. Carla seems to believe his assurances but she's skeptical enough that she will start having suspicions of her own before long, especially since she knows that her affair with Liam really was more than just the one night stand that she's admitted everyone, including Tony. The past hasn't been forgotten either, when Michelle called her on the carpet for dishonouring Paul's memory. An absolutely classic moment had an apparently lifeless Jed Stone packed into a hamper which the unaware staff used as a drinks table for the Christmas party while Tony sweated in the corner was sublime! And with Tony's composure threatened, is Maria going to be the next one to find herself in a morgue? I think probalby not, since she's pregnant and Tony seems to be reluctant to cross that line but you never know!
CarlaandMichelle.jpg
Jed's not dead, though. Or is he? Tony was seen cleaning out the van. Was he getting rid of crucial evidence that could convict him of another murder?

Even if it did seem to come out of nowhere, Steve and Becky have a growing chemistry and a very big secret. In his usual bumbling style, Steve is trying to let someone else take the responsibility for doing the hard thing and he's trying to push Michelle into breaking up so he doesn't have to do the dirty work. He hasn't really changed much in all these years, has he? Lloyd is the only one that knows their secret but secrets on soaps have a way of oozing out. Liz will find out and blood being thicker than water, her loyalties will be with Steve and she'll keep the secret. For now. But she'll not let Steve take the easy way out either. Liz will have a secret of her own to keep when she and Steve's best friend will realize that they have a strong attraction. It's the stuff of classic soap opera!

The wonderful romance of Molly and Tyrone has hit the skids. Tyrone's antics with con woman Auntie Pam were meant to finance a fairy tale wedding as a surprise. Not everyone has enjoyed Auntie's Antics but I have. Thus, the lies meaning to conceal the plan were of course, uncovered by Molly who was royally pissed, moreso, I think, because she thought Tyrone was having an affair. If that hadn't been part of the logic, I think she might have been more likely to have given Tyrone more of a chance and more readily accepted his apology. Still, we know she'll forgive him eventually and we look forward to the wedding in January (just about at the one-year anniversary of Vera's death, by the way.)

46iii.jpgGail has finally found a nice fella but even he's keeping secrets from her. First the business over the Windasses and now he's keeping his financial woes from her. The road to romance is never a smooth one for Gail. Tina and David are never boring and throwing the neighbours from hell and the divine Graeme into the mix is a touch of genious. Graeme is an enormous asset to Corrie! He's quirky, street smart, unpredictable and sweet. He'll go far, that lad! Putting him in the butcher shop gives him interaction with more of the neighbours, as well, and with David turning 18, they'll be in the pub more and that brings in even more connections and chances to mix with the residents. Having Tina in the Kabin and in the kebab shop does the same thing for her character, no longer just isolated to Gail, David and her father. When you isolate a character, you restrict how much you can do with them and it limits their lifeline on the show. That was one of the main problems with the Mortons. Darryl had David and Jerry had a few friends but that really was the extent of it for a long time. Too long, and the momentum was lost.

The return of a classic character rather than making Tony's eviction to a generic old man was a stroke of genius as well. It allowed them to bring him back to be the thorn in Tony's side and also, be a foil for Norris. Norris' competition obsession seemed to be a short, old-fashioned style Corrie storyline but it's blossomed into a shy, sweet romance and it's about time Norris found a nice woman who's going to treat Norris kindly rather than the rottweiler that was Angela Hawthorne.

We've got a new barmaid and assistant manager which has put Michelle's button nose out of joint, when clearly, her mind's not been on the job all year! I don't know where it's been but it's not been on her vanished biological son Alex nor on her in-house one Ryan who seems to have gone walkabout too. Rosie's kidnapping by John Stape was a bit daft but seeing her blithely selling her story to the tabloids and aiming for glossy-paged celebrity is typical of our shallow Miss Rosie. And her part in revealing to Tony the affair between Carla and Liam via a mobile phone video has resulted in one of the best lines of the year, Carla grabbing her by the scruff of the neck and hissing "I'll make you into a handbag!!!" Marvellous stuff!

So Coronation Street is ending 2008 on a high note for me. Kudos to Kim Crowther for pulled up Corrie's socks and setting it on a straighter course. The road to the 50th anniversary in 2 years' time could very well be paved with gold cobbles. Don't expect perfection, there's bound to be a few potholes, but I think Coronation Street is coming out of a slump and is better than ever!

Sheree Murphy is apparently set to make a return to soap - in Coronation Street.
The former Emmerdale actress, 33, told the Daily Star: "I want to go back to work. I've been at home with my kids for so long."

And it appears Corrie bosses are interested in the brunette, who is married to footballer Harry Kewell.

"Sheree's an established name," a source said. "If she joined the cast in Weatherfield it would certainly create a lot of interest."

Despite appearing on Loose Women and taking part in the fifth series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, Sheree is still best known for her Emmerdale role as Tricia Dingle.

Corrie bosses have denied reports that three, favourite established stars, are to get the boot.

A tabloid paper has claimed that producers are planning to get rid of Betty Driver (Betty), Eileen Derbyshire (Emily) and Barbara Knox (Rita) in a bid to cut costs, but bosses have said this is completely untrue.

A Coronation Street spokesman said: "The producer Kim Crowther sees the older actors in the show as absolute Coronation Street gold and would never seek to lose them.

"Barbara Knox and Eileen Derbyshire will be leading some big storylines in 2009. Betty Driver always provides gravitas behind the bar at the Rovers and we will continue to seek to use her where we can."

CORRIE favourite Fred Elliot is to return to Weatherfield — in a haunted HAT.

His ghost will possess new butcher boy Graeme Proctor every time he dons the famous straw boater.

Graeme even starts speaking like Fred — using his trademark phrase: “I say.”

A Street insider said: “This storyline will be absolutely hilarious. The character of Graeme is proving to be one of our funniest and this will be laughs all the way.”

RIP ... Audrey at Fred's coffin

RIP ... Audrey at Fred's coffin

Fred, played by John Savident, was killed off in 2006. His last words were to sweetheart Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls): “Be happy, I say be happy.”

But Corrie bosses will bring him back in spirit at the end of next month.

Graeme (Craig Gazey) even stuns Fred’s son Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold). When he asks where he found the hat, Graeme tells him: “From that rack, I say, from that rack in the back.”

Customer Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) says the hat suits him and Graeme replies: “Eeh, that’s right kind of you Michelle, I say right kind — in’t it our Ashley?”

Ashley assumes Graeme is larking about but sees from his blank expression he is unaware of the transformation. Ashley demands: “Talk to me about the weather.”

Without the hat, Graeme responds: “Nice weather we’re having.” With it he answers: “Nice weather we’re having, I say nice weather.”

The insider said: “We’ve even talked about having the hat exorcised, which would be fantastic telly.”

Here's a fresh batch of on-location Coronation Street pics which just landed in my inbox. If you're averse to a spoiler, then I suggest you avert your eyes beyond picture number one!

First up we have a nice little group shot of the new group of teens to form in the Weatherfield soap. If you didn't read about them the first time around, Sophie Webster's (Brooke Vincent) school friends Ben (Lucien Laviscount) and Sian (Sacha Parkinson) will begin making regular appearances from the end of the month, complete with Ugg boots.

From the off, there's an immediate spark between swimming captain Ben and Sophie, but things aren't quite as straightforward as they seem...

Meanwhile, grieving widow Maria Connor (Samia Smith) gets the shock of her life on her wedding anniversary in February when her husband's killer Tony Gordon (Gray O'Brien) turns up at Liam's graveside. Maria's wary, though, when Tony begins to cry. Just what is Tony up to? Surely he wouldn't kill again?

http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/09/02/550x_street_080109_mariaozzytony_grave02.jpg

And finally for this entry, there's a surprise screen return from a certain Corrie oldie who was apparently strangled to death at Christmas by everyone's favourite factory boss Tony. Yep, that's right, Tony didn't kill again. Instead, he packed Jed (Kenneth Cope) off to Wigan to start a new life, just as he suggested he would.

As you can see from my pictures, Tony's right-hand man Jimmy Dockerson (Robert Beck) pays him a visit in a bid to ensure his silence.

All credit to Corrie for their misdirection as to Jed's fate on Christmas Day, though! It definitely had a lot of people fooled.

KILLER Tony Gordon breaks down at Liam’s graveside and admits he wishes he was still alive – in front of his widow Maria.

The evil factory boss, played by Gray O’Brien, visits the cemetery but doesn’t expect to find Maria (Samia Smith) there, with her dog Ozzy.

She’s replacing the flowers on his grave on what would have been her first wedding anniversary with Liam (Rob James-Collier).

Tony is full of remorse and tells Maria – who has sussed out what he did to her husband – that he wishes Liam was still alive and that things had been different – and ends up in tears.

He murdered Liam after discovering he was having an affair with Carla (Alison King), who he married after Liam’s death.

The scenes will be shown in ITV1’s Coronation Street later this year.

Im starting to think Tony is just a guy who did a few bad things

CORRIE’S Sophie Webster is to become the opposite of Street slapper sister Rosie – by turning to God.

The 14-year-old schoolgirl (played by Brooke Vincent) even takes a vow of chastity.

And when Sophie starts attending a Bible group, she ends up with two new men in her life — boyfriend Ben, 16, and God.

Parents Kevin and Sally Webster (Michael Le Vell and Sally Whittaker) are baffled by Rosie’s turn to religion in the Manchester soap — but relieved she’s not seducing teachers like Rosie, 18, (Helen Flanagan).

Sal will tell her: “Well, I don’t know where you get that leaning from. I was boy-mad at your age and you don’t get it from Rosie — she’d sooner give up breathing than boys.”

CORRIE killer Tony Gordon arrives at the graveside of his victim Liam Connor — only to find widow Maria already there.

Maria (Samia Smith), who has taken along dog Ozzy, blanks the evil Underworld boss while laying flowers, convinced he murdered her man.

Tony (Gray O’Brien) — who had Liam (Rob James Collier) mown down in a hit and run last October — dabs his crocodile tears with a hanky. Or is he feeling true remorse?

A source said: “He’s the last person she wants to see. She’s already upset as it’s her first wedding anniversary.”

The scenes air next month.

CORRIE: KILLER TONY IN CRACK-UP

GRIEVING Maria Connor calls a truce with her husband’s killer after discovering he is on the brink of a breakdown.

Maria, who has been hell-bent on nailing Tony Gordon for arranging Liam’s death, is stunned to discover he has plunged into depression.

Tony – played by Gray O’Brien, 40 – hits the bottle when wife Carla (Alison King, 35) leaves him after becoming suspicious about his involvement in Liam’s death.

In scenes to be screened next month Maria (Samia Smith, 25) turns up at the grave on the day she and Liam would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

As she changes the flowers and gently places a picture from the latest scan of their unborn baby onto the grave, she lovingly whispers to Liam: “Happy wedding anniversary darling.”

But then she becomes freaked out when Tony appears behind her in a drunken and dishevelled state.

He is genuinely apologetic that he has disturbed Maria at the grave and tells her: “I’m really sorry Maria. I thought you’d have been and gone by now. I just wanted to pay my respects.

“I am so sorry Maria‚ for all of us. You two should be having a candlelit dinner celebrating 12 great months together.

“As God is my witness Maria, I really wish Liam was alive and kicking and your baby had a father.

“I wish that Carla had loved me instead of loving Liam. I’d have even settled for being third best.”

Maria can see Tony is sincere and as they stand together by Liam’s grave she says: “I can picture him in there you know.

“His perfect little face, his hands folded across his chest, that gorgeous kink in his hair and that cute little mole on his back.”

Tony offers to look after Maria and her baby financially, even though she knows he paid for Liam to be killed in a hit-and-run.

A soap insider said: “The thawing of the relationship between Maria and Tony will be another intriguing twist in the continuing saga of justice for Liam.

“Tony’s feelings of guilt and remorse will also get worse as it fully sinks in just how much hurt and heartache he’s caused by having Liam killed.”

Scarlett.

Maria (Samia Smith) is in a terrible state. She can’t get anyone to believe her allegations about Tony (Gray O’Brien) and when she finally gets to talk to the police they have already been approached by Carla (Alison King) over Maria attacking Tony. They advise Maria that if she continues to harass Tony she’s be in serious trouble. Devastated she leaves the police station and heads home but as she rounds the corner into Coronation Street she sees Tony crossing the road and her hatred for the man she believes killed her husband bubbles to the surface. She puts her foot down and drives straight at him.

Sally (Sally Whittaker) and Kevin (Michael Le Vell) assure Sophie (Brooke Vincent) that they love her and apologises for the way they have sidelined during all their problems with Rosie (Helen Flanagan). Rosie makes disparaging remarks about her sister but Sophie is having none of it and gives as good as she gets.

Ken (William Roache) arrives back from Portsmouth without Peter and explains to Leanne (Jane Danson) and Blanche (Maggie Jones) that Peter had had to go into rehab. Blanche has no sympathy for Peter and his problems but Leanne is concerned and agrees to look after the bookies and stand by him.

Eileen (Sue Cleaver) is amused when she spots Gail (Helen Worth) and Anna (Debbie Rush) rowing in the street. Meanwhile Gary and Len congratulate themselves on the all round success of the copper piping scam. Eddie Windass (Steve Huison) however is dumbstruck when Kirk (Andrew Whyment) tells him that he has managed to arrange for them to join another darts team.

This episode is written by Mark Burt and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Stuart Davids.

***

PI for the rest of the week follows:

Monday 26 January 8.30pm

It’s mayhem on the street as Maria (Samia Smith) sits dazed in the crumpled wreck of her car and Tony (Gray O’Brien) lies on the cobbles. Kevin (Michael Le Vell) rushes to Maria’s aide whilst Carla (Alison King) is relieved to discover that Tony is conscious. The emergency services are called and Tony and Maria are taken to hospital. The enormity of what she has done hits home to Maria and she waits with baited breath to see if she has harmed her unborn child. Meanwhile the police warn her that she could be facing an attempted murder charge if it is proved that she tried to run Tony over on purpose.

A cocky Gary Windass (Mikey North) suggests to Tina (Michelle Keegan) that David (Jack P Shepherd) tried to frame him for the robbery because he is jealous and worried that Tina fancies him. Later in the pub David is devastated when he hears Tina telling Jason (Ryan Thomas) that she isn’t sure Gary is guilty.

Desperate to escape the problems at home, Ken (William Roache) takes Eccles for a long walk by the canal but when the dog falls in and Ken tries to rescue him he finds a good Samaritan in the form of the charming Martha Fraser (Stephanie Beacham), who invites him to dry out in the warmth of her canal boat.

Elsewhere Eileen (Sue Cleaver) is surprised to discover that Julie (Katy Cavanagh) is in fact the daughter of one of her old school friends and Sophie (Brooke Vincent) comes home from swimming in a bad mood but won’t tell Sally (Sally Whiattaker) why.

This episode is written by Chris Fewtrell and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Stuart Davids

***

Wednesday 28 January 7.30pm

The police question Tony (Gray O’Brien) about Maria (Samia Smith) running him down suggesting that she may have been trying to kill him but, to Carla’s fury and dismay, Tony insists that he didn’t see a thing and it was an accident. Later Tony has a surprise for everyone when he brings Jed Stone (Kenneth Cope) to the pub – after first making sure he covers the ligature marks on his neck. Maria feels foolish when Tony asks her to come to the pub to meet someone. Carla (Alison King) however is not convinced when Tony tells her he set Jed up in a new home after feeling bad about buying his old house and when she later sees Tony frogmarching Jed to his car, and apparently threatening him, her suspicions are aroused even more.

Blanche (Maggie Jones) and Leanne (Jane Danson) continue to work alongside each other in the betting shop in Peter’s absence with Blanche (Maggie Jones) even conceding that she likes Leanne (Jane Danson) and thinks she is good for Peter.

Norris (Malcolm Hebdon) and Mary (Pattie Clare) are delighted when they jointly win a motor home in a competition. Mary suggests that they get some use out of their prize and enjoy a few days away in Southport.

Elsewhere David (Jack P Shepherd) congratulates himself after managing to ruin Gary’s (Mkey North) date with Rosie Webster (Helen Flanagan).

This episode is written by David Lane and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Stuart Davids.

***

Friday 30 January 7.30pm

It’s war between David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and Gary Windass (Mikey North). Gary speaks to Jason (Ryan Thomas) who fills him in on some interesting information about David’s history and all the scrapes he’s been involved in. Armed with some serious ammo he sets about trying to wind David up and succeeds despite Tina (Michelle Keegan) begging David to ignore his childish antics. After suffering a day of antagonism David finally flips and punches Gary – a brawl ensues and Tina tries to stop it but Gary gets the better of David and knocks him to the ground.

Ken (William Raoche) takes Eccles for another walk along the canal and once more bumps into Martha (Stephanie Beacham) who invites him for lunch on the barge. He discovers that she is appearing in a local production of A Streetcar Named Desire and asks him if he would mind helping her with her lines. As Ken sits enraptured it is clear that Martha is worlds away from his problems back in Weatherfield.

Maria (Samia Smith) calls at the factory to apologise to Tony (Gray O’Brien) for wrongly accusing him of killing Liam but Carla (Alison King) is intrigued when Maria can’t resist a dig about Tony evicting the old man. Later Carla decides to pay Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) a visit to try and find out exactly what went on and she’s surprised by what Emily has to say.

Elsewhere Janice (Vicky Entwistle) gets the shock of her life when she sneaks out of the hospital for a crafty fag with her new mate Mike (Antony Bessick).

This episode is written by Jayne Hollinson and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Stuart Davids.

***

Friday 30 January 8.30pm

David (Jack P Shepherd) is in a bad way lying on the pavement as Tina (Michelle Keegan), Eddie (Steve Huison) and Anna (Debbie Rush) try to pull Gary (Mikey North) off him before he does any more damage. David is taken to hospital in an ambulance and asks Tina to lie for him and say that Gary threw the first punch. Meanwhile Anna and Eddie berate Gary for the assault and warn him that he could go down. But when Gail (Helen Worth) tells Anna that Gary is a mindless brute she sticks up for him and insists David is a liar.

Carla (Alison King) decides it is time she got some answers of her own so she pays Jed (Kenneth Cope) a visit in Wigan and takes him out for lunch. As she plies him with alcohol she quizzes him about Tony (Gray O’Brien) and when he takes off his scarf she notices the marks on his neck. She asks him if they have anything to do with Tony and his silence speaks volumes.

Janice (Vicky Entwistle) is surprised when she gets a visit from Mike’s wife Laura. Laura thanks her for being such a good friend to Mike and being there when he died. Janice is moved by her words and tells Leanne (Jane Danson) that Mike’s death has made her think seriously about her own future.

Elsewhere Norris (Malcolm Hebdon) and Mary (Pattie Clare) decide to try and make some money by renting out their motor home.

This episode is written by Lucy Gannon and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Stuart Davids.

lol, tonights episode was okayish IMO
but if you compare it to last Monday's blockbuster, it seems kinda.... (same with Emmerdale)

I liked the techniques used in the episode though

Oh yeah, that was hilarious!

I laughed so much at the bit when Liz was sitting behind the sofa whilst Steve was saying the same things to Lloyd that Liz had said earlier on that episode!

"The last time I thought that, Tracy Barlow walked into the Church with a baby!" Liz's face was hilarious as Steve regurgitated those lines!!

I hope the viewers gained last week stick with Emmerdale, as there is some good stuff coming up on that

What's that about Emmerdale?

Well, they got Jack Sugden's funeral (a tribute to the actor who died last year), Kidnapping fugitive Cain Dingle coming back and the last of the wooden actors (Paul) leaving

I have to say, I've been getting into Emmerdale recently. I normally catch it in the early morning, if I'm up, and it seems quite good, at least a lot better than it has been recently (from what I've seen). It can't beat Corrie though!

Scarlett.
13-01-2009, 12:20 AM
I'd suggest adding it into yer schedule

Its great, the King's are brilliant
They also have the Wylde's coming in who will take the King's old home over :spin:

Ellis
13-01-2009, 12:24 AM
I might just do that! Thing is it's on a bit too early for me, I'm normally busy between 8-9PM and that's why I catch Corrie on ITV2 later on, but Emmerdale isn't repeated on ITV2 so I don't know how I'll fit it in. D'ya know when/if Emmerdale is repeated at any decent hour? 5:30AM isn't very reliable!

Scarlett.
13-01-2009, 12:25 AM
The Omnibus' I suppose, its repeated all the time at the weekend, the last showing being early monday morning on ITV4

Yeah, Emmerdale is about to step into a new era, this Thrusday

Im most looking forward to Cain Dingles return...his exit was literally Hollywood worthy, with helicopter chases, armed police, twists, planes

ooOOoo, there'll be hell to pay when he gets back then! LoL, it's funny we're talking about Emmerdale in the Corrie thread, is there an Emmerdale thread even?

LoL @ your avatar, I loved explosive Maya! Where is she these days anyway? In prison?

Scarlett.
13-01-2009, 12:39 AM
lol there is, I will bump it
the two shows are sister shows anyway, what happens in Emmerdale happens off screen in Corrie :b

Maya is locked up in a mental hospital

Blame that on Steve Frost! It was hardly worth getting rid of Charlie & Tracy (with no hope of her coming back for 10-15 years) just for a few good episodes!

At least Peter's back I suppose which gives the Barlows some depth, which they've lacked for the last few years.

Scarlett.
13-01-2009, 01:09 AM
Lol didnt that happen like in Summer 2007?

The Tony storyline is a slow burner though, but its got some exciting bits to keep us interested (the upcoming one Maria running Tony over then crashing, then her later forgiving Tony, also Jed's return)

According to the TV Times, Suranne Jones received a letter from Coronation Street's bosses asking her if she'd be interested in appearing in a spin-off DVD.

Suranne says she did wonder what would happen if Karen and Steve met up again somewhere away from the Street. She says, "I have no plans to go back, but there is the huge pull of Simon Gregson."

A Steve/Karen spin-off would be a brilliant idea - I'd buy it.

Meanwhile, read a review of Suranne's latest TV series, Unforgiven, on TV Scoop.

Corrie bosses have investigated claims that a cross was hidden during the filming of Molly and Tyrone’s wedding.

They've concluded that there was a misunderstanding about the reasons for wanting to move the cross.

A Coronation Street spokesman explains here:

"Contrary to claims that the programme’s producers wanted the cross moving as they were worried its inclusion would offend people, what actually happened was that they wanted to move the cross so that it was not hidden.

"A member of crew knew that they were dressing the set with candles and flowers and knew this would obstruct the view of the cross. A member of church staff was asked if the cross could be moved.

"When she asked why they wanted it moving, she was told that Coronation Street didn’t want to cause offence to anyone when the scenes were shown.

"It now transpires that she took this to mean that production felt people would be offended by seeing the cross – when in fact they were concerned that the props were blocking the view of the cross.

"In fact during the Wednesday episode of Coronation Street a shot of the cross was seen."

The spokesperson continued: “We have now made this clear to the Reverend Milnes who is going to explain this to his parishioners and we apologise for this misunderstanding.”

Carla (Alison King) is dreading Tony’s (Gray O’Brien) return from his business trip after her visit to see Jed Stone and she is snappy with Rosie (Helen Flanagan) when she unwittingly thwarts her attempts to speak to Maria (Samia Smith). When Carla eventually visits Maria to try and make amends she is disturbed by Maria’s claims that Tony paid a heavy to run Liam over. Secretly wondering if it is true she tells Leanne that she isn’t sure she knows who Tony is anymore. When Tony finally does return she admits that she has seen Jed and asks Tony if he knows anything about the marks around his neck.

Len (Conor Ryan) is gloating about David’s injuries but Anna (Debbie Rush) reprimands him as she is worried about what is going to happen to Gary (Mikey North). David (Jack P Shepherd) is pleased that Tina (Michelle Keegan) agreed to tell the police that Gary threw the first punch but Tina is already feeling uneasy about the lie, especially when Gail (Helen Worth) makes it clear how comforted she is that Tina witnessed everything. Meanwhile Gary tries to convince Len that Tina is lying about what happened. Len says he will have a ‘word’ with her.

Janice’s (Vicky Entwistle) friends are incredulous when she tells that that she has been thinking about training as a nurse – she insists that she has changed and Vicki (Wanda Opalinska) tells her that if it what she wants she should go for it.

Rosie is enjoying making Sophie (Brooke Vincent) feel uncomfortable by teasing her about her crush on the swimming captain Ben.

Elsewhere Ken (William Roache) and Martha’s (Stephanie Beacham) friendship blossoms as they share their love of language but he still hasn’t told her he is married.

This episode is written by Martin Allen and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Jerry Smith.

PI for the rest of the week follows:

Monday 2 February 8.30pm

Tony (Gray O’Brien) puts on a great act with Carla (Alison King) denying any involvement in Jed’s injuries. He insists that he found Jed trying to commit suicide and saved him but the guilt at pushing someone to those lengths promoted him to re-house the pensioner. Carla is not sure but with no evidence to the contrary has to believe Tony. Once he’s left her though Tony calls Jimmy and asks him to put the frighteners on the old man which Jimmy duly does. Unaware of what has gone on Carla can’t help a creeping feeling of unease when she overhears Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) telling Rita (Barbara Knox) that Jed has been rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack.

Anna (Debbie Rush) approaches Gail (Helen Worth) in the Kabin begging her to ask Tina (Michelle Keegan) who really started the fight but Gail is having none of it. When Gail reveals Anna’s suspicions to Tina and David they immediately deny everything and Gary does himself no favours by telling Tina he knows she lied to the police, almost starting another fight with David in front of Rita.

Sophie (Brooke Vincent) has enjoyed a lovely evening with Ben prompting Rosie (Helen Flanagan) to complain that she wasn’t allowed out on dates at 14. Sally (Sally Whittaker) points out that she never brought home charming church-going boyfriends like Ben!

Elsewhere Ken (William Roache) opens up to Ted about his friendship with Martha (Stephanie Beacham) and is asked by Janice (Vicky Entwistle) to tutor her so she can realise her dreams of becoming a nurse.

At the Rovers the Flight Fandangos have arrived for their tournament with Kirk’s team. Despite being led by Captain Kirk (Andrew Whyment) there is nothing remotely starry about the Rovers team. As they are beaten one by one by their opponents including Disco Dave, played by none other than darts supremo Phil Taylor, one of the visiting team recognizes Eddie (Steve Huison) and it soon becomes clear that the mugging scam has been used before.

This episode is written by Mark Burt and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Jerry Smith

Wednesday 4 February 7.30pm

Carla (Alison King) is a woman on a mission – she needs to know exactly what Tony (Gray O’Brien) has done and if he was responsible for Liam’s death. She realizes that Jimmy (Robert Beck) is the man with the answers and, after first speaking to Leanne (Jane Danson) to sort out somewhere to stay if needs be, she heads out to Jimmy’s. Tony is suspicious about where she has gone and when her claim that she has gone for a meeting with a client proves a lie he sets out to try and find her. Meanwhile Jimmy is feeling under pressure as Carla quizzes him about Tony and as she leaves he calls Tony to tell him what has gone on - with Carla on her way back to the factory how will Tony react?

The Windasses are on a charm offensive baking cakes for the locals to try and curry favour after Gary and David’s fight and Eddie’s (Steve Huison) darts scam. They even call in on David (Jack P Shepherd) and Tina (Michelle Keegan) hoping to encourage David to drop the charges. Eventually Anna (Debbie Rush) has to concede that it’ll take something greater than butterfly cakes to make the Platts see sense.

Janice (Vicky Entwistle) is having her first lesson with Ken (William Roache) but she is not best pleased when he suggests that maybe she should set her sights a bit lower than five GCSEs and that she might be better thinking of a career as a care assistant rather than a nurse.

Elsewhere Colin (Edward De Souza) and Rita’s (Barbara Knox) friendship is blossoming.

This episode is written by Joe Turner and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Jerry Smith.

***

Friday 6 February 7.30pm

Carla (Alison King) and Tony (Gray O’Brien) sit in a deserted factory after sending the girls home early. Carla wants answers but Tony wants to know why she has been asking so many questions. Like a dog with a bone Carla won’t let it go and she starts to see cracks in Tony’s armour as she finally tells him exactly what Liam meant to her. A devastated and beaten Tony can only listen as Carla tells him how much she loved and still loves Liam – even though he is dead. With nothing else to fight for will Tony finally confess to Liam’s murder?

Gail (Helen Worth) reluctantly agrees to go for a drive with Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) and is intrigued when they arrive outside the prison gates. Anna then issues an impassioned plea to Gail asking her to get Tina to change her story so that Gary can escape a prison sentence. Gail however is unaware that Tina has lied about the fight and insists to Anna that she is doing the right thing giving evidence against Gary.

Steve (Simon Gregson) and Lloyd (Craig Charles) have a heart to heart and realise that they can’t let a woman ruin their friendship – even if that woman is Steve’s mum. Liz (Bev Callard) is delighted that they are pals again but less than impressed when she discovers that Steve is taking Lloyd on a lad’s night out.

Eileen’s (Sue Cleaver) dad, Colin (Edward De Souza), is getting on like a house on fire with Rita (Barbara Knox) and also seems to be impressing the other ladies on the street – much to Eileen’s annoyance.

Elsewhere – Vicki (Wanda Opalinksa) gets a call from Poland to say her mother is ill and she has to return home immediately.

This episode is written by Jonathan Harvey and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Jerry Smith.

Friday 6 February 8.30pm

The storm raging outside Underworld is nothing compared to the emotions running wild inside the factory. A stunned Carla (Alison King) stares incredulously at Tony (Gray O’Brien) as he calmly confesses to the murder of Liam. Although she had started to suspect he was behind Liam’s death nothing could have prepared her for hearing the truth and his reasons for what he did. She starts to fear for her own safety and tries to figure out a way to escape. Salvation comes in the form of Vicki (Wanda Opalinska) who arrives at the factory to tell them she is going back to Poland. Seizing the opportunity Carla opens the locked door despite Tony’s protestations. He is keen to get rid of Vicky and resume his conversation with Carla but she makes a last desperate bid for freedom – will she escape the murderer’s clutches or has she pushed him too far this time?

Steve (Simon Gregson) and Lloyd (Craig Charles) are preparing for the singles night but Liz (Beverly Callard) is still concerned especially when Norris disapproves of the dive where Lloyd and Steve are going. Steve is also less than impressed – especially when he discovers that Lloyd has duped him into attending a singles night.

Mary (Patti Clare) invites Norris (Malcolm Hebdon) on a cruise with her and her mother but he turns her down and refuses to believe Rita’s (Barbara Knox) claims that Mary is falling for him.

This episode is written by Chris Fewtrell and produced by Kim Crowther, the director is Jerry Smith.

Worse fake punch ever.

I watched firdays nights episodes this morning, and ryan punching steve in the face. Without moving his body at all and steve being all bloody.. and where he put his hand up after. It looked so cheap.

Good episode though.

Actress Stephanie Beacham will soon be appearing on our screens as the delightful Martha and what a change it is from her previous role in cult soap Dynasty. We'll let Stephanie tell you more about swapping sunny Malibu for life on a freezing barge in Manchester.

Tell us about Martha – how does she differ from your other roles?

What is fantastic for me about Martha is she is the first down-to-earth woman I have played in years. Martha’s costume is so comfortable, warm ugg boots and jumpers and jeans – a world away from Dynasty! I don’t mind one bit.

What is it about Martha that appeals to Ken?

Ken feels more comfortable in Martha’s company in some ways than he does at home. She sees something in him that no one else does and that is what he finds so appealing. She sees in him what he would like people to see in him.

What is it like working with William Roache?

William Roache is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. He is a really nice bloke, delightful and helpful and we get on very well which is great because most of our scenes are just with the two of us.

Why do you think Soaps like Coronation Street and Dynasty are so popular?

Soap operas are so appealing because they are friends you don’t have to phone up – you can just tune in to.

Tell us about life away from work

I live in Malibu and have lived there for the past 24 years. I had to leave my new doggies. It’s also a bit of a change from sunny climate to here – this is very cold. I was laughing to myself today thinking: ‘This is what you signed up for, honey!’ I am wearing layers of thermals that make me look ten times my normal size. We either film on the exterior of the barge or the interior set, which is still freezing.

My daughters, my eight-year-old grandson Jude and the dogs are the most important things to me. I love my life in Malibu, I do my washing up with a view of the ocean and mountains but I keep a base here for work and to see my friends and family.

Coronation Street executives are reportedly preparing for a race row after deciding to show an episode that contains derogatory remarks about Italian women.

In an episode which will be aired next month, Tina McIntyre, played by Michelle Keegan, will make disparaging comments about Mediterranean "mamas', says a report in the Daily Star Sunday.

Fitness freak Tina will tell boyfriend David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), that Italian women put on weight when they hit 30.

She says: "I don't want to be like one of those Italian birds...look great 'til they're 30 and then all that pasta they scoffed goes south."

Weatherfield bosses reportedly "deliberated for hours" about the controversial line before eventually deciding it should stay.

However, representatives of the UK's 150,000-strong Italian community have said that the comments may cause offence.

Italian State Tourist Board representative for the UK, Stefanie Gatta, said that British women are the ones who may need to lose weight.

She said: "If you go on a beach in Italy you will find women at 40 and 50 in great shape. They look after themselves.

"The stereotype like the one mentioned in the script belongs in the past. It's like saying English people are eccentric and wear bowler hats."

The episode is due to be shown on February 25.

First up on the rostrum this week we're with Coronation Street and yep, you guessed it, 'crazy' Maria's (Samia Smith) is at it again. Her fury towards Tony (Gray O'Brien) reaches boiling point when the police warn her that if she continues to harass him, she'll be in serious trouble.

So, being the sound-minded, reasonable woman that she is, she heads home in the car and sees Tony walking across the road. Instead of swerving to avoid him, her hatred of the man she believes killed her husband Liam (Rob James-Collier) consumes her and she drives straight at him...
