Whitney to be prostitute in new EastEnders plot

EastEnders bosses have confirmed the soap is to highlight the issue of sexual exploitation in a storyline involving Whitney Dean.

The plot sees vulnerable Whitney, played by Shona McGarty, begin work as a prostitute.

EastEnders bosses said the teenager's life will go on a downward spiral after her stepmother Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) leaves, leading her to fall for an 'unscrupulous man who ultimately sexually exploits her for his own financial gain'.

The soap - which has hit headlines over its controversial baby swap plot - has devised the plot alongside Comic Relief.

An EastEnders spokeswoman said: "EastEnders has been working alongside Comic Relief since last year, devising a storyline that raises awareness of sex exploitation.

"In the long tradition the show has of tackling social issues, this is a storyline that looks to be exploring a growing problem that faces many young women in the UK."

Gilly Green, head of UK grants at Comic Relief, said: "It is vital that we continue to alert young people to the dangers if we are to stop them being exploited and the opportunity to work with EastEnders will make a huge audience aware of this issue.

"We have been working with the EastEnders script writers and some of the young women from projects we support to ensure the story reflects the reality of young people caught up in sexual exploitation."

The charity's chief executive, Kevin Cahill, said the plot would 'highlight an important issues' and "help raise crucial funds to help young women caught up in it".

*A special 10-minute episode will be shown during Comic Relief's night of TV on March 18.

More cheery storylines from EastEnders...

It's not intended to be the Waltons:D, they've done happy before and according to the ratings people switched off which must indicate they prefer seeing serious hard hitting drama plots.

I would hate it if EE started doing over the top comedy because Corrie is the comedy soap and no-one can match them at it but they can't beat EE when it comes to the drama IMO;).

Eastenders needs a few 20-25 characters and some strong male characters too.

^Sounds good

I'm actually quite looking forward to tomorrow's episode seeing as it's centered around Carol and Biana who are both brilliant actress' and are great at whatever material given, even though Carol's character is being damaged by this Connor storyline. Also excited to see Sonia make a one off return, I think it's this week she's back? I know she gets a lot of hate on forums but I've always been a fan of Sonia myself.

No, but when they try to do "comedy" it is cringeworthy, they need a happy medium... EastEnders has always been depressing, it needs to lighten up a bit without the slapstick comedy (a la Heather), I could handle the doom & gloom more if they gave at least a couple of the characters a break now & again! :D

Michael Moon, Alfie's cousin is the baby's father. He met Kat when they were in Spain and Alfie was arrested, while he was away Michael made a move on Kat and got her pregnant but she thought it was Alfie's until a few months back.

In other news, Sonia's back tonight, just for this episode though, will be nice to see her again. Apparently she explains what has happened to her Martin and Rebecca since she left.

Me too, I adore Kalfie together and it would be nice for a soap like Eastenders to show that a man and woman can be friends without anything sexual going on but at this rate I reckon BK will go forward with it as he was fond of affair storylines at Hollyoaks;).

EastEnders star Steve John Shepherd has suggested that his character Michael Moon could have a future with Roxy Mitchell.

Next week's episodes of the BBC soap see Michael and Roxy (Rita Simons) enjoy a date together at The Vic, leaving fans to wonder whether a more serious relationship could develop between the pair.

In an interview with Inside Soap, Shepherd explained: "They spend a nice evening together and then share a kiss. Roxy and Michael just enjoy each other's company.

"He likes her no-nonsense, feisty nature - and she's wild, so I think he enjoys that too."

He continued: "Roxy and Michael make a good couple and although this first date isn't a major deal, there's every chance it could lead to something more in the future."

Michael returned to screens earlier this week when he arrived at The Vic unexpectedly - providing a shock for Kat and Alfie.

Shirley is left devastated in EastEnders next month when she discovers the truth about Phil and Glenda's affair.

As fans already know, Glenda is to go public with the news of Phil's infidelity in the Queen Vic this Thursday - leaving Shirley wondering whether she can believe the schemer's allegations.

However, in the aftermath of Glenda's bombshell, Shirley is soon left in no doubt that Phil has been unfaithful. Paying a visit to the R&R, she overhears Phil and Glenda arguing in the office and, while eavesdropping on the row, she listens in horror as Phil speaks openly about his betrayal.

When Shirley walks in on the pair, Phil is shocked to have been caught out at last. He tries to protest that it's not what Shirley suspects, but she's heard enough of his lies and won't listen.

Later, when Glenda causes more trouble on the Square, a furious Shirley has had enough and drags her into the chip shop. Will Glenda live to regret crossing Shirley?

EastEnders star Margaret Tyzack has withdrawn from filming for personal reasons, forcing show bosses to recast the character of Lydia Simmonds, Digital Spy can confirm.

Earlier this year, it was announced that stage star Tyzack had been cast in the role of Lydia, who is Janine Malloy's estranged grandmother. Viewers saw her on screen for the first time last week as Janine (Charlie Brooks) visited her gran in hospital after hearing that she was unwell.

However, following Tyzack's unexpected departure from the soap, programme chiefs have recruited actress Heather Chasen to take over the part. Chasen has appeared in a number of TV roles since the 1960s, including appearances in Z Cars, Young Sherlock, The Bill, Casualty and Doctors.

EastEnders producers took the unusual step of recasting the role with immediate effect as the ongoing storyline between Lydia and Janine will be an important one for Albert Square in the months ahead.

Speaking of the decision, a show spokesperson told DS: "Unfortunately, due to a personal matter, Margaret Tyzack has had to finish filming earlier than planned.

"In order to continue the current storyline we've taken the decision for Heather Chasen to take over the role of Lydia."

Chasen will begin filming at EastEnders on Friday. The changeover will then take place on screen immediately, meaning that fans will see the actress's first scenes as Lydia next week.

I liked Margaret in the role, hopefully the new actress will be able to play her just as well.

What's the actress been in? I'm sure I recognise her. But agree about her voice, sounds like she's making a gangster movie.

But, this episode is awful. Max is a crap character. Crying over Tania remarrying, after "falling" for Vanessa, after crying to be with Stacey at Christmas but she turned him down. Wish both him and Jack would piss off.

Samantha Womack is a good actress, but gotta say Jessie Wallace really impressed me.

She got it perfectly, right amount of not quite understanding, getting peed off, and just hurting from all the grief Ronnie was dragging back up. Thought she was gonna rip her face off.

Jack did my head in though, all he does is chase Ronnie round repeating the same dialogue "What you sayin?". SHE'S SAYING HE'S NOT YOURS!!!!

Completely agree with this post, tonight was really a really good episode and Jessie Wallace's acting was impeccable.

Agree with the Jessie praise, she was brilliant tonight. So glad she decided to return. The way she spoke and looked at Ronnie when they had the one to one was just astounding. She played it perfectly.

As if Max and Abbie would just walk out of that car though :laugh2: They'd have the engine on their laps!

Yeah I thought it was a bit weird how they both came out of it with only a couple of cuts and bruises, the corner of the blue thing they crashed in was right where Max would've been sitting.

Also found it quite funny how at the wedding when they found out about it it was broad daylight when Tanya was asking Jack if she could go with him, yet in the next scene of him driving there it was night time all of a sudden

I think looking back Sam Womack's acting tonight was terrific, standout of the night for me, Jessie was amazing but overshadowed by Sam's conflicted dialouge, I just sincerely hope that when she leaves she takes a year off and then comes back in 2012 or 2013.
