It seems that within the last six months or so that you have to quit or be axed to get a storyline in Eastenders, lol.

I loved when Heather complained about her asthma when Dot and Shirley started smoking, how Dot and Shirley just looked at each other and then it went to a shot of both of their arms sticking out the window with their cigarettes. I know EE is doom and gloom for the majority of the time but you can't deny it does have it's comedy moments too.

The tackle was funny:joker:. I know what happens but keeping quiet.
Good to see Fats sticking up for Whitney:).
Glad Hev and Shirl made up. Dot gets on my nerves but I like Rose and her son. Andrew? Anthony?:joker:
Agree that Kim's storyline was over quick but she does need more screentime and storylines like Denise. It was good to see her serious side and they should show it a bit more but keep the comedy too.

Good episode tonight, this week has made me wish they would film on location more often. It's nice to have a change of scenery and I've found I've enjoyed it a lot more than usual this week too. Bit predictable to make Rose Andrew's mother, why is it we can never have a new character with no links whatsoever to the Square? I am loving Rose from what we've seen so far though, I think she could become a really great character in time.
I hope Ryan survives, but I've got a feeling either him or Rob will die. Haven't read any spoilers who wouldn't know who.

Again, thanks! I cannot stand Heather, I wont apologise for that... I find her the most pathetic & pointless character in EastEnders & by the way she was created for ridicule (her surname is Trott ffs!) & her own mother called her 'Pig'... She gets these 'comedic' storylines that are simply as funny as having piles. So yes, I hate the character & would LOVE for them to kill her off...

Someone over at DS summed up my feelings for EE perfectly at this current time, Bryan Kirkwood has ruined it.
The new producer has totally wrecked this programme, now with an all new cast and stories that are unbelievable and have no suspense. I knew that an ex Hollyoaks producer was a mistake. Soon it will be a UK Beverley Hills 90210 and that is not what any of the fans of the show want from our Eastenders. Too late I think to put the genie back in the bottle it's just so not worth watching any longer and I was once such a die hard fan. I just can't get over how bad the casting and stories have become in the last 12 months...

I think EE has been on a downward spiral for a long time now. The production quality is getting worse every year. The dynamics of the show are being thrown around way too much.
Back in the day (i actually remember the first episode :blush2: ), we had long running plots that were believable and well acted. All that has been replaced with cheese and rushed scripts now.

Monday 17 October
Kat is riddled with guilt but this soon turns to panic when Mark arrives at The Vic, in the week's first visit to Albert Square. She gets rid of him, but it's clear Mark isn't going to give up.
When Amira arrives in Walford with Yasmin, Masood and Tamwar are delighted to meet her. However, Syed finds it hard to stay away from his daughter and he heads over to see her with Christian in tow – but Amira is adamant she doesn't want Christian anywhere near Yasmin.
Elsewhere, Fatboy finds it hard to see Whitney and Tyler together and Ian tries his best to impress Mandy.
Kat is played by Jessie Wallace, Mark by Chris Simmons, Amira by Preeya Kalidas, Masood by Nitin Ganatra, Tamwar by Himesh Patel, Syed by Marc Elliott, Christian by John Partridge, Fatboy by Ricky Norwood, Whitney by Shona McGarty, Tyler by Tony Discipline, Ian by Adam Woodyatt and Mandy by Nicola Stapleton.
By the sounds of things Kat is going to have an affair with this Mark guy :bored: Totally ruined this character since her return

I don't often post on here anymore - and still won't - but there is no way I can sit down and continue to see my favourite soap decline.
EastEnders is absolutely appalling at the minute. EastEnders has never been this bad before. Even in the not-so-good periods, such as 2004 and 2006, I still had a reason to watch. I've actually switched off. I don't know how anyone can sit through that drivel.
Since March 2010, EastEnders has been on a downward spiral. For me, it become almost unwatchable from late November 2010. EastEnders has had fundamental problems since at least 2006 and they were very evident under Kate Harwood (during 2006 - 2005 was a good year for EastEnders, but I believe that to be down to something else, which I won't go into just yet). The problems were still there under Santer but he was able to mask those problems, so they weren't very apparent to your typical viewer. In spite of all this, Santer still made EastEnders exciting and worth watching. At the minute, there's nothing in EastEnders to look forward to. (Tanya's cancer storyline had potential but has been damaged already; Ben's 'coming out' storyline has just been a piece of piss, IMO.)
Everyone who claims to be a 'fan', or even a 'viewer, of EastEnders deserves much better than the nonsense that is currently being served out.
Yes, the problems have been here since at least 2006 but at least Santer made EastEnders 'decent'.
Talk to anyone and they're saying, "Oh, EastEnders is dreadful at the minute" and comments to such degree. Most people I know have, at the moment, given up on EastEnders. Why aren't the press laying into EastEnders? 2004 and 2006 were much better than anything served out in 2011 so far and they're the years that were hammered by the press. In fact, back then, the press was just seeking blood with EastEnders. I think part of the problem was that both the ITV soaps, Emmerdale and Coronation Street, were in excellent shape from at that period and EastEnders wasn't exactly brilliant during that period (although, as previously stated, I'd much rather have that than anything now).
EastEnders feels so disjointed at the minute.
At the minute, I can't actually be bothered saying what's wrong with EastEnders, because there's too much wrong with it.
Why can't the BBC see that the, rather overwhelming, majority isn't happy with the show, as of present?
For that very reason, I urge everyone - who doesn't think EastEnders is doing well at the minute - to complain. Hopefully, if more people begin to complain, the BBC will start to take notice. https://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/forms/
I also notice that the ratings are significantly down from this point last year. There's no excuse.
Bryan Kirkwood needs to go now before any more damage is done to the show.
I worry for EastEnders, I really do.

Anyway, Kirkwood needs to go - I haven't been 'EXCITED' for EastEnders since Diedrick left - I use to be so pumped for the episodes and the storylines and now I feel like I HAVE to watch it. :idc:
It's horrible.
The only good point EastEnders has had lately was at the end of Summer there, when it went to South End, to the sea side and the show took on a different feel and Rob died and that.
That was excellent.
Then it went back to Albert SQ :yuk: It's the Masood storyline that is dragging out, and The Moons being everywhere - I'm just fed up with it.
We need some fresh faces and some better/bigger storylines.

Also they've completely under-used Mandy since she's been back by having her with Beale....they should have made it that she and Janine wer scheming friends.....and that they knew each other while Janine was gone from the square....
I never watched when Mandy was originally on the show but I've seen clips of her on YouTube and read her bio on Wiki and gather she used to be a bit of a bitch, like Janine is. Totally altered her character since her return, you don't get the feeling she's a bitch at all really, I find it hard to believe Ian would want to be involved with her also. Bryan Kirkwood is good at ruining characters though I've noticed, just look at Kat and Alfie.

That's what I mean, going from her past and bringing her back as a friend for Janine (I mean she has NO friends) would have made perfect sense, she could have done some of the storylines Janine does to give Janines character a break.

Of course it is. Louise Berridge wasn't that bad a producer. People forget that she took over in June 2002 and, at that period, EastEnders was still riding strong; it was only in 2004 that her work began to flop and that was due to a series of unfortunate events, e.g. Leslie Gratham's sex antics, cast members falling ill, etc; and that year (2004) may not have been great but it was still all right.
Kathleen Hutchison developed Den's murder storyline and that storyline made 2005 an absolutely seminal year for EastEnders. True, the over-reliance on that storyline was no way to run a soap but it was one of the best in EastEnders' history. It was drawn out properly, it was gripping from start to finish (excluding Chrissie's stupid exit [such a legendary character deserved much better]), everyone was talking about it and the ratings were very high.
Kate Harwood was in charge for most of that year but I believe that to be because she was relying on Kathleen's success. She flopped in 2006 - big time. It really showed when all the big characters, e.g. Chrissie, Sharon, Dennis, Kat, Alfie, etc, departed towards December 2005/January 2006. So I would argue that Kate Harwood was very bad. However, we still had stuff going on that year (2006), so it wasn't all that bad.
Bryan Kirkwood, on the other hand, has been much worse than any of the above producers. He's no excuse.

Oh, I agree. Kat was always a favourite of mine from September 2000 - December 2005. Bryan Kirkwood has plagued misery on her and turned her into a miserable, wicked little cow. Kate Harwood did the exact same with Pauline in 2006. That said, is there any likeable character in EastEnders, at the moment? No. (Perhaps excluding the likes of Tiffany and Max [the latter being ruined by another ridiculous affair].) I'm not the biggest fan of Alfie but he's become a huge caricature. Bryan Kirkwood's characterisation is extremely poor.

Of course it wasn't. You've got to remember, Callum, that Kate Harwood took over in March 2005 and 2005 was a great year for EastEnders (despite the over-reliance of a particular storyline/a group of characters). It was only in 2006 when her work started to heavily deteriorate. That said, Den's murder storyline carried 2005 - and turned it into such a great year - and she was relying on Katchleen Hutchison's success; at least it was still somewhat watchable in 2006.
I honestly don't know how you do it, Callum. I really don't. You can actually sit through half an hour of that? :o

Don't give up on it. Hopefully, the show will sort itself out, like it did in '07, following a pretty poor year. It will get better. I'm positive.

I think what EastEnders needs is another Mathew Robinson period. Now I'm young so I wasn't really into EastEnders back in the '90s, but I have done a lot of research and I know, for a fact, that EastEnders was really struggling from 1996-1998. The ratings were falling, the press were laying into EastEnders and many people just weren't satisfied.
Mathew Robinson, however, came in and totally changed EastEnders, from what I believe. He got rid of all the deadwood, introduced interesting storylines and characters and just gave the show a makeover. By mid-1999, EastEnders was on top form, leading to another golden period, so everything was all set for John Yorke.
This is one of those cases. The new producer, unfortunately, has years' worth of mess - only made worse - to clean up. It will get better, though.

Realising the severity of her mother's situation, Lauren is determined to let her hair down but ends up in a compromising situation with Tyler.
Meanwhile, Whitney is apprehensive about her relationship with Fatboy going from friends to boyfriend, but Fatboy is thrilled. However, it's clear that Tyler is extremely jealous.
Also today, Syed suspects that Ben has a crush on Christian, and Pat reveals her worries to Norman.

The returnee for Tanya has been revealed
EastEnders' Greg Jessop makes a brief return to Albert Square next week after Lauren begs him to come back and see Tanya.
Struggling under the pressure of keeping Tanya's cancer secret and fearing that her mother isn't coping, Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) makes a desperate phone call to Greg - claiming that Tanya is "lonely" and would love to see him.
Later, at the salon, Tanya is stunned to see Greg (Stefan Booth) and they soon head back to Max's place for a chat.
Tanya (Jo Joyner) initially makes an excuse for Lauren's concern and her own tired appearance, but Greg can sense that something else is wrong so she finally tells him the truth.
http://i2.cdnds.net/11/40/618_soaps_eastenders_304_1.jpg
As Tanya opens up over her recent ordeal, it's clear that she's finding it a great help to confide in someone who knows her well. However, Lauren's plan starts to backfire as Greg seems unable to cope with the news - making Tanya feel worse.
When Greg starts making excuses to leave, it seems that Lauren may be forced to continue carrying the burden of Tanya's illness on her own. Will Greg really walk away for good, and if so, how will Tanya and Lauren react?
EastEnders airs these scenes on Friday, October 21 at 8pm on BBC One.
Plus some surprising Ian and Mandy news:
EastEnders fans received some surprising news at the weekend when it was revealed that Ian Beale will pop the question to returnee Mandy Salter in a forthcoming storyline.
While Ian and Mandy have appeared to just have a friendship so far, next week we see that the Walford businessman is hoping for more as he gets jealous when the mischievous blonde starts flirting with Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).
Desperate to impress Mandy (Nicola Stapleton), Ian comes home in a flash sports car which captures her attention, but his success with Mandy doesn't last for long as they later have an argument and he crosses the line by telling her to "get upstairs", implying that she's there for sex.
Furious with Ian (Adam Woodyatt), Mandy immediately goes on the rampage by smashing up his car with a golf club and throwing paint over the bonnet, even after he confesses that the vehicle is rented and not purchased!
In the doghouse following her explosive outburst, Mandy goes to stay with Pat (Pam St Clement) and begins to see Ian in a new light when the Albert Square matriarch tells her about his softer side.
http://i2.cdnds.net/11/41/618w_eastenders_ian_mandy_2.jpg
At the same time, Ian has a heart-to-heart with Alfie (Shane Richie) about his woes with Mandy, declaring that he's now through with women for good. However, Alfie gives his friend some much-needed advice by admitting that his life with Kat isn't nearly as perfect as people might expect.
When Alfie explains that sometimes the perfect partner only exists in the imagination, his words strike a chord with Ian, who's later in a calmer mood when Mandy pays him a visit to apologise.
Ian and Mandy soon open up to each other, with both admitting that they just want to be loved. Ian then leaves Mandy stunned by asking her to marry him. Will Mandy accept?

Lola is pointless and annoying. All her storylines are just silly really. Preferred Julie and Billy together

I'm not keen on Lola either :( Intrigued how the pregnancy storyline will go though

People on DS call Lola Laugh out loud acting, which is true to be honest, she's a terrible actress. Funny how they were making out she was going to become the new Stacey when she first joined, too.

She's been in it on and off for a few years but she made a permanent comeback earlier this year.

I loved the episode but only because I'm fed up of Tanya's illness being a secret. Hated Derek

God, I hate Lola. She can't act for toffee and I'm not arsed abour her. Wish she'd **** off an' all. Bring back Zsa Zsa and Lucy! :(
Anyway, best episode of 2011, but that's not saying much, given that the standard of quality this year has been very poor.
It was a pretty good episode, though. Glad to see Derek back. :)

I think she's a bit OTT at times but this week has been brilliant from her. Especially today. It actually didn't feel like I was watching a soap at some points

Yeah I agree, it just flew by for me because it was so captivating and powerful. It really was an epic episode. The stuff with Tanya and Cora in the bedroom was so moving, both did an amazing job.
