Bryan Kirkwood is the worst for new characters. The Moon Brothers, Lola, Derek all been introduced this year and all are awful. I hope they're all gone by this time next year. When a new EP comes in first thing they should do is cull the cast starting with them three.

The storylines have been a drag, this Masood one is just terrible and it did have potential. The baby swap was terrible from the off and we lost a great character that he ruined from it (Ronnie)

Yes, completely agree. Bryan Kirkwood is the root of all the problems at EE and he needs to leave. He has ruined most of the characters and is responsible for a load of ridiculous, unbelievable storylines. The blame for EE's downfall in 2011 and it's general awfulness lies firmly with him.

I think it's a tall order to have a soap where no characters are unlikeable. There's just varying degrees of unlikeable and a character has to have redeeming traits; see Janine.

This show has really hit the pits now. Can't stand Kat and Alfie after I liked them originally in their first stint. He's really destroyed every likeable thing about them. Tonight's episodes just took the mick. Why should Jean suffer for selfish Mo?

As for the Masood story, most unbelievable and convoluted tripe ever. They spent months dragging out the predictable plot of Yusef breaking up the marriage for Zainab to say "You tried to kill me in a fire? Meh, let's get married anyway". Ridiculous.
I know it's supposed to show the effects of mental abuse but it's not in the least bit believable.

Especially everyone not batting an eyelid about it or trying to talk to Zainab, like her own sons. It's even worse than the Christian/Syed storylines.

2005 was an awesome year for EastEnders, up there with '01. You had a few crap storylines that year, but so do most other years.

I agree that 2006 was a bit crappy but there was some good stuff going on. I'd take that over 2011 any day of the week, really.

I'm glad she's getting her own theme though, she deserves it. I was worried she wasn't going to get one but I'm glad I've been proved wrong. NYD's episode is going to be so sad. I'm hoping for a scene with Denise because her and Pat were close at one point and another one with Mo with her giving Pat the letter her brother wrote years ago. Just a shame Peggy isn't returning, I know BK said that he didn't want to bring her back because it would take the focus off Pat but that's a crap reason IMO. It's totally unrealistic that Peggy wouldn't return for the funeral.

The storyline with Pat is too close to home for me - I'm finding it unbearably sad. My younger brother went into hospital for tests at the end of last April for what he thought were gastric problems, only to be told he had terminal adrenocortical carcinoma, a cancer so rare that only 2 in a million people get it. He died mid July leaving our family totally devastated. The trouble is with a lot of cancers is that you don't get any symptoms until it's too far advanced for treatment.

Pat has been underused for years more like, she used to be at the forefront of the show in the early years. She hasn't been given enough to do, some of her earlier storylines were brilliant and she was a brilliant matriach character but they've reduced her to a pillar of the community type of character in the last decade or so. I still think she's brilliant though and a big loss to the show.

It was a good episode, Derek is just a very meh character. He's far too pantomine to be taken seriously as a villain, he comes off as irksome rather then villainous. The fact he looks like a waxed gnome doesn't help him.

I loved the Janine scene best, so glad they parted on good terms. The line "your the only little girl I've ever had" was so sad. :sad: The shot of them hugging too was heartbreaking, they had their ups and downs over the years but Janine truly loved Pat and saw her as a mum. I'm glad Tanya got a scene with Pat too, when she looked at Pat you could tell she was fearing that she would soon end up in the same state. Jo Joyner is a brilliant actress.

Dot scene was nice but I wish it could have been a bit longer. Dot was actually in Pat's first ever scene so it's nice that she was also in Pat's last scene too. Liked the Ian scene too. Glad David returned and although I didn't watch it when he was first in it I really liked his scenes with Pat and his introduction to the kids, too. Shame her other son Simon didn't return but I don't think Kirkwood asked him to return, same with Peggy. The whole episode was just so sad despite it being the best episode of EE in years. The fade to black at the end and then Pat's theme was fitting.

RIP Pat Evans/Wicks/Beale/Butcher and I hope that we see Pam St Clement pop up in Downton's next series, great actress.

The Moon brothers are so wooden it's unreal. Couldn't act to save their lives, it's a joke that they're both still there. Such awful characters played by even worse actors. What this show is in dire need of is a huge cull of the cast.

It was so good to see Hev happy tonight and Shirley delighted for her, but it is sad knowing it's going to be shortlived and it is EastEnders nature after all.

Michael and Derek scene was weird at the end. Michael took the beating despite Derek taking Janine's money and I think there is more to the relationship they have than just Derek bullying Michael when he was a child...

As much as I know a lot of people hated Heather, I liked her and I think the soaps need the characters like her. The ones who are normal, not involved in all the major storylines but is just a side character. Otherwise you're just left with a cast of murderers, thugs and adulterers.

Shame they couldn't have just let her leave happy, this murder story is the nail in the coffin for Ben. Which is a waste of a couple of characters, to think they killed Kathy off to bring him into it.

As for Derek, I think he's a terrible character and it's a terrible story.

Back in the day gangsters such as Johnny Allen and the one who had Dennis killed were older men running big businesses and had a bunch of heavies and henchmen to threaten victims with.

Here, we have a middle aged podgy man with nothing about him threatening a bunch of people half his age and we're expected to believe they're scared of him.
Tyler, a boxer fgs, and Anthony, along with Michael only had to approach him 3 on 1 and it's sorted. It's ridiculous the whole square is meant to be scared of his hard man routine.
