of course UK can beat this so you guys can have a relaxed summer, i am optimistic too about you guys
but next year is what more matters to get focus back on then, when vaccines wear off, since booster jabs i think only provide protection for a couple months, but maybe enough to get back onto corona measures, and closing schools in time for a new wave

Eight people who are said to have organised the party, which also had a DJ, were also picked up.
The police went to the location after a tip-off, and sealed off the entrances so all partygoers could be checked as they tried to leave.
In total, 57 people were given on the spot fines and 54, who were without ID, were taken to an arrest centre to wait for family members to bring their papers, police said in a statement.

Ugh. Had it out with father in law yesterday who is whinging about society opening back up again somewhat. He said even with the slowish way we are going..we are definitely gunna have another wave, should stay in, halt opening up...etc. However, he also aknowledges the huge changes the vaccinations have made. He says the vulnerable are no longer vulerable, and I tend to agree. So I asked him what the issue with another wave would be, even if we had millions infected. If those who are at risk of bad infection are no longer at risk of said bad infection, and infact will be extremely likely to have asymptomatic infection. Do infection rates even matter anymore? It seemed to be the first time he had even thought of it that way. He sent me a message this morning thanking me  And said he had been worrying himself sick but I was right. Another wave, in a poplation that has largely protected its vulnerable people as much as is actually possible..is NOT really a issue. He then noted that the local paper has apparently gone back to reporting infection rates instead of deaths, and hes only just noticed.
I am not understanding the angst about another possible wave, if we do believe in the vaccination program and believe the numbers are correct, which as far as I know we have no reason at all to disbelieve and the falling numbers alongside the vaccinations going up kind of...well prove that it IS that effective at keeping people safe?

The actual medical worry of a 3rd wave is that higher infection numbers of mild infection (vastly) increases the risk of mutations, and the more mutations there are the higher the likelihood that one of those mutations will not be recognised by vaccine antibodies and then we're back to square 1. Well, not square 1 exactly, it wouldn't require a whole new vaccine development as the current ones can be tweaked for mutations, but it would be square 1 for vaccine manufacturing and rollout.
In theory, though, they just need to keep doing widescale lab testing - identify mutations as they emerge, motitor for any that are showing signs of dominance, tweak the vaccine and roll out a booster. In theory, we DO have time to do that between identifying an emerging strain and that strain becoming widespread.
It's also not a DEFINITE problem, just a theoretical one.
But yes other than that - the papers switching from deaths to infection numbers is exactly what they did last suimmer when deaths went way down... they'll report whichever number sounds "biggest and scariest" becausr that sells papers. It's a really toxic cycle. Same as demanding lockdowns when things are open, and demanding freedoms when things are locked down.
Vicky.

Very interesting, thanks. Its really not something for the 'general public' to be too concerned with though? And is unlikely to be any huge issue even if it did potentially arise unless we 'take our eye off the ball' so to speak?
Are we still going with asymptomatic infections are much less likely to pass onto others also? Oddly, I cannot find too much data on that..where..to me thats one of the most important considerations in any of this?! If so..we cannot do anything about anything more at all really. Unless people want lockdown forever, this is kind of...it? If we cannot develop a vaccine that stops people actually catching and/or passing on (which I assume we cannot, or we would have, or it would be 'in development' and big news), this is the next best thing...freedom, with plenty of keeping up with things behind the scenes.
i've been hyper careful for a year, and knowing that 3 weeks after i had my first jab i was able to go out into the big wide world with a pretty high degree of confidence of no serious illness is such a wonderful thing. This current lock down has gone on to long, and if anything, i think the government have been over cautious, which is very unlike them

They just don't really know in terms of transmission. In theory coughing/sneezing etc. is the main thing that generates the droplets and aerosols to pass it on, but they've recently discovered that a lot of "normal human activity" like heavy breathing (from exercise), or even just speaking loudly, generates aerosols which wasn't actually known pre-Covid. There's also the issue of viral load - how high is it in unsymptomatic people, how high does it need to be to be a significant risk of transmission, etc. which are also still being worked out but this is research that takes years.

Netherlands: tuesdays recap of the numbers so far
in one week time, 7% less new cases, but number of tests is lower 10%
the coming weeks are crucial if they keep decreasing or not, the R-Rate at March 22nd was 1,01, decrease of cases was in all age groups but mostly with people below 18, and over 80
number of ICU patients climbed with 19% last week, 10% higher than one week earlier
3% more hospitalisations than the week before, and in one week time 142 deaths

Mind, a taxi driver last week was telling me his sister manages the familys properties in Cornwall..they have a string of holiday type lets apparently (lucky sods, really) and he was saying, though of course I know its just hearsay really and could just be bollocks designed to ease awkward silences or something..that they are now fully booked June this year right through 2023 and almost all the bookings came in in the last month :S If thats true, I can well believe its going to be hard to find anywhere to go. also it was indeed bit fearmongering maybe regarding third wave, i carefully say i am happy it didn't last really that long, but we'll see in tomorrows numbers
not too keen on ICU's being on the high side :( but its good to see not many cases among over 80's age group since that is a risk group

Had my first jab yesterday. Feeling very shivery today.
[You may also have flu like
symptoms with episodes of shivering and
shaking for a day or two.
However, a high temperature could also
indicate that you have COVID-19 or another
infection (see advice on page 5).
You can rest and take the normal dose
of paracetamol (follow the advice in the packaging)
to help make you feel better.]

Had my first jab yesterday. Feeling very shivery today.
Seems quite 50/50 anecdotally, with those I know who have had it. Between feeling really crappy in various ways for a day or two...and feeling nothing (and thus, in a few cases, worrying they hadnt been given the right vaccine as they had heard everyone be ill  )
I know the stats or whatever seem to say its maybe 1/10 people who experience symptoms, but that seems VERY low from those I know, unless we all just..either have a crappy immune system, or a very sensistive one..depending.
Gavin was 'very' ill, but only for a day...beginning about 10 hours or so after the jab. Said it was like the most intense flu type thing he had ever had, but short, basically condensing flu down into a day..so really horrible feeling, but he said despite feeling so bad, he would take that over normal flu anyway day it was so short. Not sure about others, but the only time I ever had real flu, half of the issue was it feeling like it would never end. Like almost 2 whole weeks of feeling like death. I think I agree on preferring suffering worse illness/pain but it being shorter like.
Funnily enough though, when we had covid...for both of us it was like a very intense flu (proper flu, not a cold obviously..like flu is really awful and this was like flu on speed) but for only 2 days, followed by a while of having 0 taste at all, I lost most of my sense of smell too for a while, he didn't...then a week or so of feeling really really tired..like to the extent where it was like trying to walk through bloody treacle even trying to go to the loo. Given the reason for the illness bout after vaccination is your immune system responding to it...its made me wonder if the flu type part of covid...was actually covid or it was the immune response there too! And basically, the lack of taste/smell and tiredness was the covid for us..

we're getting more test events now
our health minister Hugo de Jonge gave green light also for certain zoo's, garden centres, stores, festivals, football/sports events that people can indicate what they want to get tested for
how we want to give people some hopes again, more optimism to fight anti corona lockdown protests
despite slow vaccine rollout, but we can do things on two negative tests as well
theme park like Efteling might be able to let people in via their bungalow park (two negative tests there) same for zoo beekse bergen also via their cabin resort via the two negative tests
terraces is being discussed still too, if we should reopen when weather gets better again

Netherlands: at the 3 group matches of Euro Cup are 12.000 people allowed in the Amsterdam Arena
in case the corona situation either improves or gets worse the total of audience might be changed, so more or less people in the stadium
but anyway what is required are two negative tests
also at round of 16 duel played in amsterdam too are same amount of audience allowed
I won't be attending any more sporting venues until they kick politics out of sport.

The curfew, introduced in January, could also be scrapped from that date, NOS said. Any relaxation of the rules depends on coronavirus infection rates, which have been dropping in recent days.
Other rule relaxations on the horizon include allowing universities and colleges to resume more normal teaching, and to expand the options for secondary schools and after school clubs. The number of visitors to private homes many also be increased from one to two.

measures are going to be relaxed as of April 21st but health minister Hugo de Jonge said last night in talk show Jinek, we are not going to relax too many measures not going to be any dumb now we've gotten this far in bringing numbers down, but public want relaxing of measures so we must give them their way too but in a more safe and responsible way (with the test events, only allowing people with negative test)
so far test events/festivals, only 22 people in total (16 yesterday, 6 before that) tested positive, at well over 10.000 taking part at this, after 16 yesterday tested positive, 80% of all who take part tested again (and again came back negative) so that's more or less some hope

Tomorrow
Wales lets the English in.
Over half of people in England now live in an area in which new cases of Covid have all but vanished, with some places not reporting a case in public data for more than a month.
Infections have been so low in areas with a total population of 34.5 million that Public Health England has redacted their latest weekly case tallies in order to protect the privacy of those – if any – who test positive

Netherlands: no relaxing of measures on April 21st, too soon for that, so if people want to enjoy some freedoms, they can via the test events to sign up for those under strict testing guidelines
new cases average is decreasing ok enough but hospitalisations and ICU need to go down first either, since doctors and ICU chief Gommers have been complaining regarding that
no treatments in hospital for other illnesses now either for time being, to focus on getting covid numbers down again there especially in ICU

are the vaccinated ones fully protected also against all the mutations?
and another bit of uncertainty is will there be more mutations still to come?
since when you vaccinate, you fight against the virus, and the virus wants to grow stronger (a belgian professor Geert Vandenbossche said, he thinks the time for vaccinating now is wrong amid the very midst of pandemic, where he is of opinion the vaccinating should be at a calmer moment)

it has been proven the vaccination programme has broken the chain of infection here in the UK and have save 10,000 lives, whether there are mutations depend on the speed of vaccination in every country I am afraid, the hope is that any that evade the first round will be caught in the booster jab in the Autumn but who knows, no one has a crystal ball

In theory, there's plenty of time between identifying a new strain and mitigating against that strain with a booster. e.g. the "concerning strains" so far were all identified several months ago and have as yet not shown signs of becoming dominant, other than the "UK strain" which the current vaccines, it seems at this point, are effective against. So basically it's not like a mutation appears and then all of a sudden is causing thousands of deaths; with the base vaccine in place, you have time to tweak & roll out before it even gets a foothold. This is essentially how annual Flu vaccination works (identifying the upcoming strain and intervening).
Really it's all dependant on how good/quick we are at "catching" new mutations, but it's likely there'll be dedicated labs basically doing that full time for the foreseeable future.
An update to England and Wales's contact tracing app has been blocked for breaking the terms of an agreement made with Apple and Google.
The plan had been to ask users to upload logs of venue check-ins - carried out via poster barcode scans - if they tested positive for the virus. This could be used to warn others.
The update had been timed to coincide with the relaxation of lockdown rules.
But the two firms had explicitly banned such a function from the start.
Under the terms that all health authorities signed up to in order to use Apple and Google's privacy-centric contact-tracing tech, they had to agree not to collect any location data via the software.
As a result, Apple and Google refused to make the update available for download from their app stores last week, and have instead kept the old version live.
When questioned, the Department of Health declined to discuss how this misstep had occurred.
Scotland has avoided this pitfall because it released a separate product - Check In Scotland - to share venue histories, rather than trying to build the functionality into its Protect Scotland contact-tracing app.

A cheap drug, commonly used to treat asthma, can help people at home recover more quickly from Covid-19, a UK trial has found.
Two puffs of budesonide twice a day could benefit many over-50s with early symptoms around the world, said the University of Oxford research team.
There are also early signs the drug could reduce hospital admissions.
The NHS says it can now be prescribed by GPs to treat Covid on a case-by-case basis from today.
At present, there are few options for treating people with Covid who are not in hospital, apart from paracetamol.
This widely-available asthma drug works in the lungs, where coronavirus can do serious damage, and could improve the recovery of at-risk patients who are unwell with Covid at home.
Prof Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS England, said he was "delighted" by the trial results so far and he said GPs could prescribe it after "a shared decision conversation" with patients.

Germany: government has agreed with Merkel about stricter corona measures, national lockdown and a curfew from 21:00 to 05:00
this law also provides opportunities for regional governments to close all non-essential stores, barbers, and a ''must work from home'' order, as well as only leaving your home with official paperwork, and official duties (so this might include work like athletes, sportspeople, or music artists like eurovision song contest travel which is also work but a must to stick to guidelines of course, the latter in case these measures are still around begin of May)

sooo no daily numbers today Netherlands
but some statistics from last week
number of positive corona tests has increased with 6%, in total 51.240 over the last week of new cases (this increase is after easter holiday when numbers were slowly and steadily decreasing so the increase might be explained bc of easter)
biggest rise is in the 13-17 age group (+15%) and 18-24 age group (+5%) the 80+ and 12 or under are shown to be decreasing and not getting infected
in hospitals the number of corona patients stabilized now 2.554 in total, of which 794 on ICU (the week before it were 2.558 (minor increase of 4 so) and 776 (increase of 18)
Thats Fine
Have a swim and relax
That’s something that always amazes me .. people who travel thousands of miles to spend a week or two around a pool in a hotel complex surrounded by screaming kids ( other people’s kids at that ) .
We got to Rhodes and live in the town then spend the days on the beach and in the sea plus wander around the surrounding area .. then in the evenings walk around the beautiful streets and get a meal or two , chat with locals and other holidaymakers ... plus do some people watching of course ..

I went out for lunch today.
It was so good to have a little bit of freedom back.
