worth noting that these are smaller hospitals with small capacity further north (up around inverness) and also i believe aberdeen royal infirmary, which is a larger hospital but serves a large area. It’s not the larger city hospitals, and it’s not in major population hubs (lothian, greater glasgow, ayrshire) … yet.

So a bit misleading, poster, your post makes it seem like all/ a lot of hospitals are at capacity, when in reality it’s a handful of smaller hospitals.

The guy shouldn’t be on tv, he’s happy to vilify others and say people shouldn’t be attending events in masses/ large events and it’s so selfish and rude yet he’s more than happy to do so himself

Personally I think we should all open up because otherwise it won’t open up until next summer, yes we will probs go into restrictions again in 2 months but at least we have some normality beforehand. If the vaccine isn’t the way out then there is zero way out….

we just need to keep a very close watch on hospitalisations. The same principles remain. If the admissions get up to too high a level then we need restrictions again to keep those numbers under control. If hospitals cant cope, there is no alternative

Any thoughts/suggestions on us visiting relatives in the US in a months time for two weeks or so ??

We both work in schools so would presumably after allow for ten days quarantine on our return..

Or would it be better for them to visit us instead ?

I worry that there maybe local restrictions suddenly imposed due to the rocketing infections and if they did come here we’d be stuck in our little town for the duration.

All parties involved are double vaccinated already .

Yeah but the Wimbledon audience don’t dribble and spunk all over each other and spit in each other’s mouths and what not, like you would get at an England match.

What really finished me off is my friends father in law in his 80s went into hospital last week...non covid related issue...he was in for a few days and started to ask to see his wife, they were very close, did everything together, the staff said no, so his wife and his son battled for 3 days for her alone to be allowed a visit and finally they gave in, he passed away soon after...imagine if she didn’t have her son to go into bat for her...she is double vaccinated and had taken a test but still no ...this is all wrong and needs to stop now

no reason for panic, just because cases go up

i mean hospitalisations and ICU's in my nation remain quite low, compared to an actual ''wave'' like back in third wave for example

i also still follow Germany's news shows what they are doing now regarding covid, and most are like no reason for panic, says also virologist Karl Lauterbach, he just wants extra thorough testing among youths who are going on holiday, but no reason to bring people back from Mallorca, those who are ill are advised to stay in their hotel rooms and not spread the virus further into the specific country of destination

if/when we get to 100k infections a day, if the person conservatively interacted with 5 people, thats 500k people that have to isolate per day. It wouldnt take long before it was the whole working population that was isolating. Track and trace just doesnt work when large numbers are infected, we know that from previous experience

i think this is a good decision from my nation's government, considering new cases go up to 7.000 again

mainly among youths of age group 18-24 but still, when we say we need to protect everyone, we need to protect everyone of all age groups

and we opened up too soon, we first need to fully vaccinate a whole majority of younger age groups

i am not taking the vaccine but i myself don't actively party so this doesn't apply to me, those younger people who socialize on daily basis and frequent nightclub visitors they need to vaccinate fully to stop the spread of covid, and good thing our virologist Marion Koopmans says it now too about the ''long covid'' effects among younger age groups, well informed woman this miss Koopmans, she also follows the situation in UK currently and is aware of UK scientists also trying to make their PM Johnson change his mind on July 19th deadline that that is also too soon when looking at the current numbers

[Covid to get worse before it gets better, doctors warn]
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57786002

Anthony Harnden, who is deputy chair of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation which advises the government on the vaccine rollout, said that although it was "worrying" that infections were rising again, "at some point we have got to get back to normality".
He told the Today programme: "We're in the middle of summer and, providing people carry on behaving responsibly - which I think they will do - then we're in a much better position" than in previous waves.
He said the vaccination programme had gone "incredibly well" but there was still "a long way to go", adding that increasing vaccination rates was key.
Prof Harnden said around 55% of 18 to 29-year-olds had received their first dose of a Covid vaccine nationally but it was the early stages and he was confident of better uptake among young people.
Dr Mike Tildesley, an epidemiologist and member of the SPI-M modelling group, told Times Radio that high levels of cases could "challenge the virus" to mutate into variants which the current vaccines are less effective against.
He added that there was "a risk" with the planned 19 July reopening but that should decrease "as we go through August and we get more people vaccinated".

True but it is still such a small % of cases (considering the cases atm are just confirmed cases, the real cases of people not testing at all). It’s like 0.01%, not worth stopping life over. More than 0.1% of people who have flu will end in hospital also

I’d cautiously say that looking at the last 5 days or so, new cases seem to have plateau’d a little? That doesn’t mean they’ll come down, or won’t go up further, but they’ve been “flat” at around 32k for a while.

he also apologized for friday's horrible press conference how he had turn back several of relaxing of measure decisions, and how we still need many measures at least until we've jabbed majority of the youth

now there is a lockdown until August 13th at least

Yes good he apologized

Sir Patrick Vallance says there is "no doubt" going

"If behaviour returns immediately to pre-pandemic levels,

With almost 1.5 million pupils off school in the latest snapshot of attendance in England, one headteacher says he fears absence will get even worse as the summer holidays approach.

Patrick Ottley-O'Connor, executive head teacher of Westhoughton High school in Bolton, said: "Anecdotally, from the students, we know some parents are just concerned they are going to lose a holiday because of having to isolate.

"We're hearing conversations that those holidays are booked - conversations that we need a holiday and we're not going to stop going on holiday.

"Some students have even said that their parents have turned off the their track and trace."

He says he previously saw an unexplained dip in attendance before Easter and the spring half-term holiday.

Families have also told the BBC they are intentionally keeping children out of school so they can avoid a spell of self-isolation that would prevent them going away.

as masks will not be a legal requirement from monday, any situation where people wear masks in a busy setting should be considered a plus rather than those not wearing them a negative

If you have been double vaccinated like most of the population, your chances of catching the virus are greatly reduced. It's not the same situation as it was last year

they have better figures on it now. If you are double vaccinated and the people around you are double vaccinated but have become infected, the risk of not getting infection is about 75%. If you are with someone who is infected and not vaccinated, but you are then the risk is 50%. Risk of severe infection goes up to > 90% on double vaccination.

Those figures are excluding social distancing etc. They are refining them all the time, but thats why they talk about the wall of vaccination

Two-thirds of adults in the UK are estimated to have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, latest figures show.

PM Boris Johnson hailed the milestone on Twitter, as it was confirmed a total of 35,155,767 second doses have now been delivered since the vaccination rollout began in December last year.

That is the equivalent of 66.7% of all people aged 18 and over.

Of the four nations of the UK, Wales has the highest proportion of adults fully vaccinated, with 73.8% estimated to have received both jabs (1,861,700 second doses).

England is next on 66.5% (29,429,018 second doses), followed by Scotland on 65.7% (2,914,904 second doses) and Northern Ireland on 65.4% (950,145 second doses).

The latest figures, which have been published by the UK's four health agencies, also show that an estimated 87.4% of UK adults have now received a first dose of a vaccine - though the rate of vaccinations has been slowing in recent weeks.

So ‘in theory’ if the daily infections rate figures do indeed hit 100,000 per day )as per government predictions )then we could hit that 100,000 figure every day for over 10 months

they estimated a week ago that the daily infections would be > 50k per day by the 19th when restrictions were removed and that is going to be the ball park. Its not just england that are relaxing restrictions, all the 4 nations are, it's a gamble on vaccination protection.

We know that if hospital admissions go above 2k per day they will need to put the breaks on, so i give it about a month after we remove restrictions. However, many have been saying for many months now that it is the schools that drive infections upward, so if the numbers start to come down next week when the schools break up in england, it will pretty much prove the point and then it becomes a moral issue on vaccinating kids, and I wouldnt want to be the one making that decision

yes, 100k at its peak was an estimate, but they also expected 50k a day by monday, which will probably be a bit light.

There may be pressure on some hospitals, but there have been no covid admissions in my area in more than a month, so there is plenty capacity

the media are going from one scare story to the next. Because deaths have been so low they are moving on to long covid and saying our kids are at risk from it. When the overwhelming majority of kids don't experience any covid symptoms at all, saying that they will all get long covid is simply an utter falsehood. I am just sick of the media

More than 500,000 alerts were sent to users of the NHS Covid-19 app in England in the week to 7 July, telling them they had been in close contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus. It means the number told to isolate by the app is up 46% on the previous week

230 total hospitalisations, 35 new hospitalisations (biggest increase in hospitalisations since last month)

158 total on nursing wards, increase of 20 compared to yesterday

72 total ICU/ventilator patients, decrease of 2 compared to yesterday

and Netherlands now appears as Red on the european coronamap, the province Groningen even as DarkRed

DarkRed meaning if there are more than 500 infections per 100.000 people

if we get up to 100k infections a day, with people going to large events, the numbers being pinged by the app will be crazy.

We will be right back to where we were at the start of the pandemic with essential people in all industries being forced to self isolate. Supermarket deliveries are going to go haywire again. I better stock up on toilet roll quickly

The UK is "not out of the woods yet" and people should act with caution as Covid restrictions in England end on Monday, Prof Chris Whitty has said.

England's chief medical officer warned that Covid hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks and could hit "scary numbers" in future.

Prof Whitty said the pandemic still had a "long way to run in the UK".

Solicitor General Lucy Frazer said while cases will rise, there were "consequences for not opening up".

But she warned: "Of course, if we get into a situation where it is unacceptable and we do need to put back further restrictions, then that of course is something the government will look at."

they have moved away from that position in recent times. I think when it was the alpha variant it was probably a reasonable expectation that things would be irreversible because we effectively had it beaten, but then delta came along and it all went to poo. No-one could stand up now and seriously say things are irreversible when they are clearly not. I expect social distancing to be re-imposed as law in enclosed spaces within the month

Worth pointing out that more than 50% of ICU stays for any reason (Covid or otherwise) have ongoing health complications for several months or even years after discharge… a lot of what’s reported as “long Covid” is just normal ICU complications, or even bog-standard PVFS (post-viral fatigue syndrome) that you can get after any virus. It’s very common after Glandular Fever, for example.

There are many symptoms of long covid..over 100 I think.

The squirts are one(an excuse to hide alchoholism)
Fatigue(excuse for millions)
Brain fog(one for the stoners to take advantage off)

I can’t say I’ve been at all impressed with the WHO at all throughout this pandemic

I wouldn't worry too much about long Covid then

You've managed to stay virus free whilst working through the pandemic in a school packed with kids. You must have done something right to not pick up the virus, you've been double jabbed etc so long Covid is not something you need to concern yourself about at the moment :fc:

This bloke was on TV last week explaining all this ... intriguing , as it seems that the evidence apparently points overwhelmingly to it being a man-made virus :(
