OK, they can ask, and I politely decline, what now? Can we just go on as normal like we have done for the past 43 years of my life?
I feel,as a generation we have had it pretty easy...no wars to contend with..imagine having to send your kids to the country to keep them safe...or rush to an air raid shelter in the middle of the night..or have your food rationed...I feel wearing a mask is a minor inconvenience...I have never stopped and wear one when shopping or last week on a train we all wore masks...I don’t really see the big deal if I am honest...it’s not limiting my freedom in the way a lockdown would

Am sure the Holocaust survivors would agree with you there. It's a bit sad that the only argument to putting a piece of cloth over your mouth is likening it to the slaughter of millions of people. Sick, in fact

Just watching the darts. A packed crowd there, many times more people there than you'd get in a supermarket or on a bus and all closer together, not a mask in sight.

Conclusion
Our review of the literature offers evidence in favor of widespread mask use as
source control to reduce community transmission: Nonmedical masks use
materials that obstruct particles of the necessary size; people are most
infectious in the initial period postinfection, where it is common to have few or
no symptoms (45, 46, 141); nonmedical masks have been effective in reducing
transmission of respiratory viruses; and places and time periods where mask
usage is required or widespread have shown substantially lower community
transmission.
When used in conjunction with widespread testing, contact tracing,
quarantining of anyone that may be infected, hand washing, and physical
distancing, face masks are a valuable tool to reduce community
transmission.

I've made informed choices for myself based on scientific data. You can shout, stamp your feet and pontificate all you want. Personally, I don't give a **** who is wearing a mask or who is vaccinated, I try to avoid people anyway so as long as I have done all I can to protect me and my loved ones, by wearing a mask that is proven to reduce the risk of transmission and by being vaccinated that has been proven to reduce the risk of serious illness and death....everyone else can knock themselves out with whatever they want to do.

I'm sure masks can help reduce transmission but I think the effect is tiny and makes little difference in the grand scheme of things given that everything else is basically back to normal. The argument for wearing them mainly seems to be that it's a measure you can take pretty easily without being a big imposition on people's lives. But for me it's about are we committed to returning to normality or not. Everyone wandering around with masks on is a depressing sight, they're a nuisance to wear and they hinder human interaction. If you work in a role that requires you to wear one all day its even more of a pain

if omicron is more infectious than delta but less lethal, then its a good thing. Early indications are that its less lethal

Well done Colombo. You worked it out again.
The point of my post was there was no point to it, I was just mentioning that Moronic was an anagram of the new varient, because yes, I'd seen it on Twitter. Your reaction to that was the strange part. It seemed to trigger a reaction in you that you needed to respond with a personal attack on me.
So I asked you the reason for that sudden outburst towards me, my guess was that it was because I was mocking your new cult religion, but as usual you avoided that question. Seriously, think hard about what brought out that reaction in you from something so minute which meant nothing.
Alf I’m afraid you’ve massively over-estimated how much of my time and energy I spend on your posts, and on thinking about Covid for that matter :joker:. I find your posts mildly irksome because they’re just copy and paste spam from Twitter or YouTube. It’s not a big deal, and I really don’t care much, but  it’s a forum for sharing opinions. the media want a sensational story with the "will christmas be saved" crap that they pulled last year.
As i said earlier in this thread, if omicron proves to produce next to no nasty symptoms, then the best thing we can do is get as many people infected as possible to build up immunity. So all this panic may actually be counter productive .... time will tell

out of vaccinated elderly in those care homes, 22% dies after a covid infection
970 care homes in the last 4 weeks there have been positive covid tests
in most locations as of today the first care home elderly will get their booster jab

Some people would prefer to live their lives. Some people don't want to lose money by having to turn away custom. Some people are just not that fearful.

well Alf
if people were taking their own precautions, thinking themselves of wearing a face masks
then the government does not have to force these measures onto anyone
and it shouldn't be seen as taking people's freedoms away but it should be seen as wanting to keep everyone safe

Get rid of all food that is bad for you everything with sugar in, all take-aways, all burger joints, all coffee shops, all alcohol. Get rid of all transport. I could go on, but you get the point. There's more chance of people under pensioner age dying from being struck by lightning than dying with these virus's.

You talk a lot about fear Alf but it often seems to me that it's all just different types of fear. Yes there are people who are over-the-top fearful of Covid and live in fear of it ... but honestly, likewise there are people who are clearly also living in fear - of the restrictions (and vaccines, etc.) - in a really over-the-top way. Seems quite clear that those people are also scared. Just of something else . Lots of fear going around. Not enough people just moderately and accurately assessing the situation for what it is.

i don't think there is enough discussion on the effect the last 2 years has had on mental health, and the implications of it will go on for decades.
Fear is very real and it has been perpetuated and exacerbated by the media. The world needs to be weaned off from this fear ... whatever the manifestation of it is. It's the single most important aspect and also the aspect least discussed.

That would be my concern too. I'm not going to pretend that the knock-on effects from Covid and how it's been handled aren't huge and won't continue to be devastating. Mental health services are already run off their feet and it's only going to get worse. The backlog of non-covid medical procedures is absolutely INSANE at this point - I probably have permanent damage to my foot that could have been avoided if I'd been triaged properly and seen promptly when I injured it, instead of getting a diagnosis nearly 4 months later (far too late for the immediate intervention that would have been needed for the best outcome). Also my daughter has issues with her ear and has just got her ENT appointment through this week. ... ... we were referred in November 2019! 2 years ago! And obviously a myriad of other examples of the damage done to healthcare, the economy, society in general etc.
I guess where I differ from Alf is that I think all of this damage has been done because no one knows what they're doing and everyone including the experts have just been running around flailing their arms and trying to look like they're in control of the situation. I think it's 95% incompetence... whereas a lot of the "theories" that go around about it try to suggest that it's all deliberate and there are sinister people out there with grand master plans for all of us. I just don't think that's the case. There are selfish, greedy people (politicians, corporations, etc.) muddling through and looking out for their own arses first and foremost. The level of dedication and organisation that would be required for it to be some huge illuminati plot ... ... I just don't see that anywhere. I find that almost scarier to be honest. That it isn't "bad people who know exactly what they're doing". It's just that absolutely NO ONE has any idea what they're doing. That has become abundantly clear over the last few years. The world has clearly always just been "muddling through" and getting by on a wish and a prayer ... no one knows what they're doing, no one is in charge, everyone is ****ing winging it.
That is terrifying.

Keep an eye on news about China.
I think China have plenty of sinister motivations and some worrying intentions but what stops me from entering panic mode about China is that something would have to change incredibly dramatically for it to be an actual active risk in The West. Why? Because they have been very clear for decades about wanting Taiwan back under direct control of China, and the same with Hong Kong, and thus far they have been unable to make that happen with Taiwan and whilst they now technically have control of Hong Kong, the day-to-day reality is that life in Hong Kong remains extremely westernised and doesn't even come close to resembling life in most Chinese cities... and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon.
So if they haven't managed to make a power grab on these things, that are right on their doorstep, have basically zero relative power, and they've been openly seeking for many many years ... I find it extremely unlikely that they're suddenly going to achieve world conquest. They have far too many issues domestically to even begin. They are massively reliant on other nations for food and even water supplies for example. This is why they're always been content to let Taiwan continue self governance whislt insisting that it isn't a real country. They COULD take it by force - it's not in their best interests when they can just say "It's still part of China so there.". They can't realistically expand their borders at all let alone start marching west.
i don't think there is enough discussion on the effect the last 2 years has had on mental health, and the implications of it will go on for decades.

It’s been detected pretty much everywhere that does the sort of random testing that detects variants. Standard Covid tests DO NOT detect which variant you have so all of the “6 cases here, 5 cases there” is nonsense. If it’s been picked up in a country, it’s in that country and active.
It’s showing up in all the “heavy testing” countries.
It’s safe to assume it’s widespread across the whole globe.
It just happened to be SA that identified the strain first.

Interestingly, quite a few rolls I know have had Covid recently. Two workmates had it a couple of months ago (both are fine but have ongoing sense of smell issues), a friend’s dad just tested positive, and another friend of mine has just come out of a 10 day Covid isolation. He’s type 1 diabetic but his symptoms were very mild - one day feeling a bit rough, the following day tired, then completely fine. Was working from home from his spare room. Could be purely down to chance, or… could be that there’s some truth in the idea that there’s a milder strain going around now? He said it was barely a sniffle and literally less than 48h, and that’s with an underlying condition and not THAT young (he’s my age, so not ancient, but certainly not a teenager).

it comes down to enforcement. A law is meaningless if it can't be enforced. If you remember back to us last year ... you can have n people at dinner maximum, including children. Unenforceable. In cyprus, they have drink driving laws, but the police help staggering drunks into their cars at closing time.
Having a law where you can't use the bathroom in a friends home is just beyond stupid
All of these things, including masks, should always be guidance because you are never going to force those who don't want to comply to obey

Netherlands:
https://nltimes.nl/2021/11/30/new-covid-measures-wont-scrapped-three-weeks-kuipers-says
The package of stricter coronavirus restrictions implemented on Sunday will very likely not be scrapped after three weeks, according to Ernst Kuipers, head of the national acute care network LNAZ. The number of Covid-19 patients in hospital is simply too high for that, he said, NU.nl reports.
When announcing the new measures in a press conference on Friday, caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said they would apply for at least three weeks. After that, the Cabinet will examine whether an extension is necessary. Rutte said he hoped the measures would only apply for three weeks so that we could have "a bit of a normal Christmas." But he would not give a clear answer on how realistic that hope was.
According to Kuipers, that hope was not realistic at all. Before the Cabinet can scrap measures, "we should really see a decrease in the number of infections, and that must last for some time," he said. Because the current infections and hospitalizations are at such a high level, that will likely not happen within three weeks. Kuipers noted that the number of Covid patients in the hospital would need to at least halve before measures can be scrapped. That number can be "combined well with regular care."
On Monday, the RIVM reported 48 coronavirus-related hospitalizations, about the same number as last week's daily average. A total of 2,780 Covid-19 patients are currently hospitalized, including 571 in intensive care
It's certainly kept the Maxwell trial down the pecking order in the news cycle.

Netherlands: Omicron variant one week earlier than thought, in samples taken from tests of November 19th, November 23th
these samples had the same extra ''spike protein'' which made them think it was omicron and now test results have confirmed this
it is uncertain if the people who these samples are from, have been in southern africa

Props for posting actual stats Parmy. Vaccine hesitancy is definitely skewed heavily towards younger people; the root is really in hyperindividualism/youthful libertarianism (ironically, something that is DEEPLY imbedded in the US-centric cultural "left" at the moment). Young people don't feel at individual physical risk.
I would hazard a guess that opposition to covid measures in general (mask wearing, social distancing, indoor gatherings etc.) is more evenly spread across age groups though.
For the mostpart it's a class/political divide not an age divide.
Hyperbole aside, the pandemic has been a gift for the fatcats, at the expense of smaller businesses...It's done purposely, It's all part of the plan.

No. Progress will be when they all stand trial for crimes against humanity.
Do you think it's progress for business owners who are gonna lose so much that they go out of business because people will just not shop in their shops at the busiest time of the year?
Amazon will be rubbing their hands with £ signs in their eyes, while the little people will be on the way to the gutter. But who cares as long as you're under the illusion that the government is keeping you safe?

Bit complex if you get into this stuff Alf. I don't actually disagree that the pandemic (and climate change, and a few other things) are being used to consolidate wealth in fewer and fewer places. For example - look at the energy company situation in the UK now. All of the small companies have bust, all are pretty much now under the banner of just a few large monopolies. I don't think it's a conspiracy theory to observe that certain people/powers are USING these things to their own ends. I just think it's a stretch to suggest that they've invented/fabricated them to do so. They've been opportunistic.
That said... ... it's also not untrue that the human race on its current course is simply not sustainable. World's ****ed. Too many people, resources now exploited to capacity, no wriggle room left.

Our neighbours have it as we speak - their son was the first to show symptoms, picked it up at primary school - there were so many cases they closed the school and everyone was ‘advised’ to get a PCR test
.. the lad just had a cough , his sister no symptoms , the mum no symptoms yet the dad who is a healthy and strong 35 yrs old builder has been floored for two weeks - just moving from his bed to a lie down on the sofa and back to bed .

I mean ... The governments are literally doing everything they can to take advantage of the virus, with power grabs and handing money over to the rich. As BOTS suggests, it's just the governments taking advantage of the situation, but it gives plenty of ammo for conspiracy theorists to say it's beennset up that way...

You have to delve quite deep into conspiracy territory there because that (in my opinion) would require a few things to be true:
1) They have (and already had before release) a 100% effective protection/vaccination for it.
2) They have some never-before-seen ability to control or predict potential mutations that would nullify said protections.
3) This advanced virus engineering technology has been developed in complete secret.
I find all three of those to be extremely unlikely, and I also find it extremely unlikely that "the powers that be" would have taken the drastic risk of releasing a virus they have no control over (i.e. one that might affect them personally).
Governments ATTEMPTING to engineer such a thing and having it escape the lab accidentally? Then I can get closer to believing it.

that's all fine and good, but unless the variant does some serious damage or kills people, the infection rate or it's vaccine busting capabilities are irrelevant. It needs the 3 prongs for it to be something to worry about. I'm pretty sure that if anyone had become seriously ill with omicron, it would have been all over the media, and yet it's not. This is a serious question. Has anyone heard a news report saying that anyone with omicron across the whole world has become seriously ill or died, because I haven't

That number won't be zero and the current sad reality is that out emergency services and healthcare systems cannot afford for that number to be anything but zero. It is crumbling. The true extent of how badly it's falling apart isn't really in the mainstream press. It's not just "struggling to cope", it's imploding, it's not going to be able to sustain an adequate level of service for even the most basic of medical care and any additional strain - ANY additional strain - is currently catastrophic.
So it doesn't matter if this is the mildest strain yet... if it's as contagious as they think it might be and 0.001% of those infected need hospital treatment... ... the camel's back is going to snap clean in two.
Sorry guys but that's the current situation .

number of positive covid tests hasn't increased not or barely the last week, it more levelled off and climbed with same amount as the week before
155.000 positive covid tests last week, compared to 154.000 positive tests the week before
RIVM speaks of stable situation, most likely the result from the measures of half November
RIVM also speaks of the R number which already was decreasing in first half of November, at November 8th that number was 1,21 which means 100 people can infect 121 others, on November 15th this number was 1,05 meaning 100 people can infect 105 others
Stock markets around the world have fallen after the boss of Moderna cast doubts on the effectiveness of vaccines against the new Omicron Covid variant.
Stephane Bancel told the Financial Times he thought there would be a "material drop" in vaccine efficacy.
The Covid variant was first detected in South Africa, and the symptoms have been mild so far.
But travel restrictions have been imposed as a precaution by places including the UK, the EU and the US.
Mr Bancel predicted that existing vaccines would be less effective in staving off Omicron, and that it would take months for drugs companies to update vaccines.
"There is no world, I think, where [the effectiveness] is the same level," he said.

reece will make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for people aged 60 and over, as the country grapples with a new surge in coronavirus cases.
Authorities said they would impose a €100 fine on every individual over the age of 60 who was not vaccinated.
The measure would apply each month from 16 January onwards.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he struggled with the decision, but it was necessary to protect more than half a million elderly Greeks who had failed to get the jab.
"Its the price to pay for health," he said.
About 63% of Greece's around 11 million population is fully vaccinated.
While vaccine appointments have picked up in recent weeks, health ministry data shows there are 520,000 people over the age of 60 who have failed to get a jab.
Greece this month barred unvaccinated people from indoors spaces including restaurants, cinemas, museums and gyms as daily Covid-19 cases hit record highs.
It has recorded 931,183 infections and 18,067 deaths since the start of the pandemic last year.
Dutch find Omicron a week earlier than thought
Dutch health authorities said that the new Covid-19 variant was present in the Netherlands a week earlier than previously believed and checks are under way to see how far it has spread.
The RIVM National Health and Environment Institute said it "has found the corona variant Omicron in two test samples that had already been taken in the Netherlands... on November 19 and 23".
The first cases in the Netherlands had been thought to be the 14 Omicron infections on two KLM flights from South Africa that arrived in Amsterdam on Friday, 26 November.
The two earlier Dutch infections also came before South Africa first reported the new strain on 24 November to the World Health Organization, which has designated Omicron a variant of concern.
"It is not yet clear whether the people concerned (in the earlier cases) have also been to southern Africa," the RIVM said, adding that the people had been informed and municipal health services had now started contact investigations.
With 16 confirmed cases, the Netherlands has one of the highest numbers in Europe of the new strain.
Norwegians should wear face masks in crowded places, PM says
Norwegians should wear face masks on public transport and in other crowded places amid a surge in coronavirus infections, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere has said.
He also urged municipalities to accelerate a drive to give booster shots to all adults, but did not call for a widespread use of digital "corona passes".
"Vaccination is key to our Covid-19 strategy," Ms Stoere told parliament.
"We can avoid a lockdown," he added.
Norway in September ended all domestic coronavirus restrictions, but opposition parties in recent days called on the government to take action to prevent the spread of the virus and thus avoid a hard lockdown of society.

Omicron, think the B was added so Parmy could do an anagram of No Chrimbo :laugh:After a quick Google search the full title is. Omicron (B.1.1.529)
So there is a B and it is an anagram of No Crimbo
UK now has 22 Cases of Omicron Covid cases
[Barnet 2 (new),
Brentwood 1,
Camden 2 (1 new),
Haringey 1 (new),
Liverpool 1 (new),
North Norfolk 1 (new),
Nottingham 1, Sutton 1 (new),
Wandsworth 1 and
Westminster 2 (1 new).
Of the nine cases in Scotland,
five are in Lanarkshire and
four are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.]Are the 22 vaccinated or unvaccinated? If there's only 22, it shouldn't be hard to find out that.

'A benign omicron may be the answer to our economic prayers'
It is almost too good to believe. The days go by and there is still little
evidence that the omicron wave in South Africa is leading to a concomitant
surge in severe illness.
Professor Francois Balloux, director of the UCL Genetics Institute, says we
cannot rule out the “highly optimistic scenario” of a late-epidemic mutation
that is extremely contagious, displaces delta, but does less harm.
If we are “a bit lucky”, he says, the replication rate of the virus in host cells
proves slower than the delta variant, leading to less hospitalisation and
death.
If we are “really lucky”, it also replicates preferentially in mucosa cells of the
upper airways, rather than in organs such as the lungs and the kidneys
where it does greatest damage. This would be the answer to our prayers.
Markets have taken a fresh beating this morning on warnings from Moderna
that it is “not going to be good” for the existing vaccines. But if the disease is
indeed milder, a slippage in antibody protection levels may not matter, and
we still have T-cell memory as the next line of defence.

SIR – Let me get this right. The Prime Minister is saying that I must wear a mask in a
shop, even if I’m the only one in there and I’m in and out in a matter of minutes, but I
can spend all night in a pub with scores of other people and I don’t need a mask.

SIR – What is the logic behind allowing us free access to cinemas with no face masks #where, if the auditorium is full, one can observe no sort of distancing, yet in a #supermarket, where observing social distancing doesn’t present much of a problem, #we have to mask up?
