Netherlands: summarizing our press conference of last night now
''The Dutch government has no plans to change its decision to stop giving the AstraZeneca vaccine to people under the age of 60, health minister Hugo de Jonge told reporters on Tuesday evening.
In addition, it is still too early to say what the impact of Johnson & Johnson’s decision to halt deliveries of its Leiden-developed vaccine to Europe will be, De Jonge said. The European Medicines Agency is due to make a statement on the situation on Wednesday.
The much criticized decision to stop using the AstraZeneca vaccine decision on the under-60s because of the risks remains in place, De Jonge said. ‘There are sufficient alternatives,’ De Jonge said, although he admitted that the decision by J&J may change that situation.
De Jonge and prime minister Mark Rutte outlined the government’s five point plan to reopen society, following the news last weekend that leaks about an April 21 deadline to reopen pavement cafes and scrap the curfew would not become a reality.
‘We all have our own Covid reality,’ Rutte said. ‘We are losing patience, we are more emotional and we are finding it harder to stick to the rules.’
Nevertheless, Rutte said, the main relaity is that the end is in sight. The first step in opening up society up again will be taken once we are over the peak of the current surge, he said. The April 21 date is too soon, he said. ‘We are looking at the figures on a weekly basis and we will decide on April 20 if measures can be taken on April 28.’
The first step, Rutte said, involves lifting the curfew, reopening pavement cafes and allowing people to welcome more than one visitor.
The second step will see amusement parks, swimming pools and sports schools reopening. The ministers did not go into what the 3rd, 4th and 5th stages would involve.
Not set in stone
The date of April 28 is not set in stone, Rutte said. ‘We cannot take the risk that we create an impossible situation in hospitals,’ he said. ‘We are going to look at what we can do on a weekly basis.’
As a start, after school clubs will be able to reopen their doors from April 19 and if things progress as hoped, universities will be able to hold face-to-face lessons from April 26. However, that decision will be taken next Tuesday.
‘We cannot take the risk that we create an impossible situation in hospitals,’ Rutte said. ‘We are going to look at developments from one week to the next.’

Radio 538 Kings Day Festival will be one of those FieldLab test events, so again only access with negative test (the biggest test event so far that will be, 10.000 people although outdoors)
King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima will still go to Eindhoven but no real tour through the city but a virtual one at our university High Tech Campus, and only the main royal family members so Willem, Maxima and Amalia, Ariane (Alexia not sure if she can attend since she is studying in Wales at this moment), and this will still be shown on TV Live here unlike last year when we only had highlights of past kings and queens days
+ elderly channel here (MAX) has its own aftertalk show with some music, royal watchers, celebs whom are royal superfans
just nice to report this hasn't been cancelled unlike last year

Almost a quarter of registered Covid deaths are people who are not dying from

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 23 per

This was always going to be the case with the way the deaths are tracked, anyone who dies with covid in their system within 28 days are classed as dying from covid-19, it’s ridiculous
A 100 year old dying of old age might have caught covid and it’ll be written down as covid, just if a asymptimatic young adult who dies in a car accident but had covid without even realising will be classed as a covid-19 death
covid infections are now back to hot spot areas, there are many areas of the country without any covid infections at all. The media won't focus on that though
The Prime Minister's comments suggest to me that they're going to be attempting another lockdown.
He says it was the lockdowns and not the vaccine that is reason for the fall in cases.

That seems highly unlikely, given lockdown was in place for ages before numbers actually started falling, and numbers fell steadily as vaccination numbers rose.
Unless they are now claiming nothing would show in the stats until 2 months after a measure was taken? When they have said 3 weeks since the start..if they are now saying that, that kind of messes them up on the claim that the first lockdown made numbers come down, as the numbers started falling pretty much bang on the 3 week mark from lockdown 1..

I think Bojo is just trying to manage expectations, at the moment we need to do both, social distance and vaccinate and the combination of both will keep numbers down while we unlock
This lockdown was nowhere near as harsh as the first lockdown, in England anyway as places like B and Q were open, and churches/mosques had congregations, also the number of key worker kids at school was much higher
Boris has always said that it would be slow and steady steps but those steps were irreversible. If vaccination doesn't protect people, nothing will.

Comparing weekly mortality in 24 European countries, the findings in this paper suggest
that more severe lockdown policies have not been associated with lower mortality. In other
words, the lockdowns have not worked as intended. Further tests also show that early
interventions offered no additional benefits or effectiveness and even indicate that the
lockdowns of the spring of 2020 were associated with significantly more deaths in the
particular age group between 60 and 79 years.
The main problem at hand is therefore that the evidence presented here
suggests that lockdowns have not significantly affected the development of
mortality in Europe. They have nevertheless wreaked economic havoc in
most societies and may lead to a substantial number of additional deaths for
other reasons. A British government report from April for example assessed
that a limited lockdown could cause 185,000 excess deaths over the next
years, while UNICEF warns of an increase in child marriages, owing to the
economic effects of Western lockdowns in developing countries (DHSC 2020;
Philipose and Aika 2021). Evaluated as a whole, at a first glance, the
lockdown policies of the Spring of 2020 therefore appear to be substantial
long-run government failures.

umm no Bots, a poorer country like Moldova for example got quite generous vaccine donations already (from Covax, and from neighbours Romania who had decided to share also quite some doses)
a Non-EU country like Serbia is doing decent in terms of vaccinations, so well they also had said EU citizens can come over to also get the jab there (dozen of dutch people made the trip already, also few from Germany) they are of course first vaccinating their own, but they have more than enough for time being anyway

A senior member of Japan’s ruling party has said cancelling the Olympics remains a possibility if the coronavirus situation in Japan becomes too severe.
Toshiro Nikai is a very powerful politician in Japan’s ruling party, so his words carry weight.
In the TV interview he said the Olympics should be cancelled "without hesitation" if the virus situation in Japan becomes too severe.
“If the infections spreads because of the Olympics then I don’t see what the Olympics is for,” he said.
Nikai’s comments have been dismissed by other ruling party officials who told Japanese media the games will not be cancelled.
The governor of Tokyo said she thought Nikai had only meant that the virus must be contained by all means.
But the virus is not being contained. On Wednesday, Japan recorded nearly 5,500 new cases.
The so-called “Kent variant”, originally identified in England, is now the dominant strain in western Japan, and it is spreading fast in the greater Tokyo area.

ok ok, not silenced, but you don't need to cancel stuff anymore
Olympics can go through, there is already no audience so and some countries (mine for example) are vaccinating the athletes before the event as well
5,500 is almost similar as my nation daily yesterday tbh, that is not too high for Japan either
if Nikai wants to contribute anything then he should use his power to come up with a health safety protocol for the event, get a good testing pavillion set up, good PPE handgel, enough face masks, gloves
last year was horrible with everything cancelled, we should not do that another year

SIR – I agree with Michael Staples’s letter (April 15), boggling at the “sheer heartlessness and scientific inanity of the present government rules”, which will see the Queen having to sit alone, in a mask, at the funeral of her husband. Do others share my despondency?
I’m tired of masks, tired of social distancing and I’ve lost faith in Boris Johnson’s élan to lead us dynamically out of this situation – which only suits those who love regulation and bossing people around.
We’ve done our bit and protected the NHS. Now we need to resume the normal behaviour of a free and loving society.

umm no, but a negative test is something good
fake tests well which is what we must prevent, with official evidence of a negative test, so i prefer people letting themselves tested at official testing pavilions rather than self tests
Nicky, the faster tests have always been very innacurate. Known since they first started making testing kits last March. In the uk, it's common practice for someone testing positive with a fast test to be tested again immediately with the slower test as it is much more accurate.
Really, please stop repeating crap you read on twitter, it's not a good look.

that is not the way they should be treating patients, i mean of course people have rights now to be suspicious of the vaccine, you got that own right to decide wether or not to take it, but doctors have no rights to talk guilt into their patients :umm2:

the 538 kings day party is irrelevant, 10.000 people without room to socially distance, ok outdoors but still not enough room for 1.5 metres distancing
other test events don't deserve criticism as overall infection rate is minimum with those, lesser people as volunteers is better, somewhat between 2.000 and 4.000 is decent for those tests

Literally the deaths are never going to go to zero, someone will always be dying with something 28 days after a positive test
i think when you take the deaths across the uk as a whole and they are under 100 then the vaccine is doing its job. Bear in mind that not all the vulnerable took up the option of a vaccine for whatever reason, so there are still people at risk and always will be

Yeah I don't know how helpful the percentage is at such low numbers because literally a difference of 1 or 2 looks like a significant percentage when it isn't. Hospitalisations and ICU still looking encouraging. I'm on the fence about new cases - it's not an insignificant rise at 9% (a rise of over 150) but it could be down to things like the number of tests actually being done etc.
It's also of course not an issue if it doesn't translate into red figures for the bottom two - and if it does stay "red" while the other two stay "green" or stable, that would strongly suggest that the vaccines are doing their job of eliminating severe illness.
Nicky91

i really don't know why i stress over this pandemic, since it 0% affects my own life
also i apologize for not knowing everything, but one thing is kinda for sure my nation's third wave is almost similar horrible as the second wave was in UK
vaccine rollout seems to be making pace now here so that might be good for numbers to come, 4.5 out of 17 million is not bad i guess, and we cannot force everyone to be vaccinated, but if we can get 7 or 8 million of our population the jab, and rest of population mostly through negative tests since i still believe in the testings quality when done officially, properly (not the self test since i have not much faith in those, more chance of faking that i am of opinion)

the hospitalisations and more serious ventilator cases are dropping consistently. That eventually knocks on to number of deaths. Netherlands: relaxing of measures step 1 April 28th
1) terraces open, 1 household you can have 3 people, but if not from same household just 1 other person, in total 50 people allowed on terraces
2) end of the curfew
3) no more going to shops on appointment, but still only few people allowed in the store per square inch
the 538 kings day party has been cancelled, now all focus on eurovision if we should cancel audiences there too and only live performances for the tv viewers and delegations in green room
fieldlab test events like Efteling theme park can go through for time being
i agree with one of our music producers Ronald Molendijk on late night talk show here, he said our health minister De Jonge needs to step up and say the fieldlab test events are also our way out of the corona lockdown and towards more freedom what the anti-lockdown people want too, more freedom and this test event thing is your way towards some more freedom with just few simple rules to follow
cancelling audiences is not because the dangers with audiences but otherwise we have rioting outside the venues, it is those rioters their fault they should shut up and be silenced, so if it must then no one of public can have fun because of those rioter scum out there

Yup. Really not understanding the (many seemingly) people who keep trying to make out the falls are down to lockdown, not the vaccine. Its pretty obvious its the bloody vaccine given timelines. And it was always going to be the case that 'the way out' was a vaccine, not lockdowns. The lockdowns were for the health systems to cope, while waiting for a vaccine..

School opened 9th March and by your own admission they were far more students than first lockdown between Jan and March
Church’s and Mosques didn’t close at all this time round in England at any rate
Garden Centres were open, Maccy Ds which closed in first wave were open
So numbers still fell though it was far busier than in the first wave
Bound to be an uptick, it’s whether it translates into hospital admissions and deaths is the question

ok am feeling more optimistic now for my nation, now i hope for even more faster vaccine rollout
i do want a calm summer pls, one thing i wish for
School opened 9th March and by your own admission they were far more students than first lockdown between Jan and March
My point is schools were back in after the Easter holiday break ... along with many businesses reopening last week ..
Both together along with the Indian strain MAY push the figures up somewhat over the coming weeks ...

there is absolutely no evidence of hospitalisations going up. Do you remember at the end of the mini lockdown last year, where infections shot up from the schools being open. Thats where we were with the new uk variant. Since the vaccine rolled out there has been no evidence of that happening again, the direction has continually been downward

COVID-19: Does the Indian variant make vaccines less effective and how concerned should we be?
Scientists are concerned vaccines are less effective against the Indian variant and it could be dominant in the UK by June.
In particular scientists and doctors are concerned this particular variant could be more transmissible and may even make vaccines less effective.
A total of 182 cases have been detected in the UK, 162 in the five weeks up to 16 April, forcing Boris Johnson to postpone his trip to India and the government to add it to its travel "red list".

I do try and remain positive but it is difficult.
As I mentioned previously my daughter attended a first aid course last week and the guy running it said that it was generally accepted in the medical community that we’d be in another lockdown situation this October ..

Japan is poised to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo and two other regions amid a surge in coronavirus cases just three months before the start of the Olympic Games.
Domestic media said the government was considering tougher measures for Tokyo, Osaka prefecture and neighbouring Hyogo prefecture, as experts warned that mutant strains of the virus were driving new outbreaks and straining health services.

Of course, we just had a mega long lockdown
Let's see in a few weeks
If falling numbers were due to lockdown, the numbers would have been coming down for bloody long before they were. The falls coorelate with the vaccine numbers. Lockdwn might have kept numbers a little lower, but the main fall is clearly because of the vaccine. Confusing why some seem to want to pretend it is NOT the vaccination program actually :suspect:
As you said, a few weeks, generally accepted as 3, before a measure can be called effective or not. Lockdown has been going for ages, with nothing coming down til the vaccinatio prgram stepped up a notch.

No It takes a Very Long Lockdown
to change the data, at the very end.
Vaccination Will Help.

It doesnt take long lockdowns to change numbers :suspect: Any stats changes from the lockdown, would be clear 3 weeks (4 at a push) into said lockdown. Same as the releasing measures, which is why we are 'opening up' slowly, to keep track of whats doing what. Generally agreed 3 weeks, for stats to show differences by each measure taken..
what seems to be being ignored is that the recent lockdown was nothing close to as strict as the one implemented last March and yet the number of seriously ill has dropped like a stone since the vaccination programme started. The insistence by some that it is not the vaccine is quite frankly absurd
Vicky.

Exactly.
No idea whats to be gained from pretending it was lockdown suddenly randomly working after ages..but...seems blatantly obvious it was/is the vaccine. Which is a good thing, so why on earth some seem determined to make out it was lockdown I dont know..

Netherlands: RIVM director Jaap van Dissel has said today in a meeting, he sees ICU numbers levelling off, and it won't matter much if there is relaxed next week or half may
also with hospitalisations he said, he and the entire RIVM team expect numbers to decrease in very short term as of now, also here he bases that on signs it to be levelling off
he also said a new phase has gone in, more because of vaccinating, and the growing immunity by people who had the virus and recovered from it recently

COVID-19 hospitalizations among older Americans have plunged 80% since the start of the year, dramatic proof the vaccination campaign is working. Now the trick is to get more of the nation’s younger people to roll up their sleeves.
The drop-off in severe cases among people 65 and older is so dramatic that the hospitalization rate among this highly vaccinated group is now down to around the level of the next-youngest category, Americans 50 to 64.
That slide is especially encouraging because senior citizens have accounted for about 8 out of 10 deaths from COVID-19 since the virus hit the United States.
Overall, COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. have plummeted to about 700 per day on average, compared with a peak of over 3,400 in mid-January. All told, the scourge has killed about 570,000 Americans.
“What you’re seeing there is exactly what we hoped and wanted to see: As really high rates of vaccinations happen, hospitalizations and death rates come down,” said Jodie Guest, a public health researcher at Emory University.
The trends mirror what is happening in other countries with high vaccination rates, such as Israel and Britain, and stand in stark contrast to the worsening disaster in places like India and Brazil, which lag far behind in dispensing shots.

at code black not all covid patients can receive treatment from doctors, and we must choose who has best chances at surviving without treatment and who got the worst chances at surviving without treatment
Gommers hopes government can still cancel the relaxing of measures before tuesday in case it goes this out of control

Germany: emergency brake of new covid restrictions will come into force starting tomorrow, also the curfew from 22:00 - 5:00
Jens Spahn their health minister said in press conference how he knows german people want relaxing of measures, but for time being that is not possible
also the border with austria, czech republic, netherlands, belgium remains closed as and especially the last two are ''High Risk zones''
The situation in India is heart breaking
What I can't understand is how India managed the first wave so well but failed with this one
I think they got complacent when the vaccine was being rolled out?
Yeah I remember they went really hard with their first lockdown implementing it with almost no notice but it did work
Whereas only a month ago they allowed a full crowd over 50,000 to watch India play England at cricket

Germany: ''we won't be able to vaccinate everyone in june'', warns their health minister Spahn
Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn has urged German residents to have realistic expectations about the vaccination roll-out in Germany, saying lifting the priority list doesn't mean all adults will get a jab immediately.
Spahn raised hopes on Thursday when he announced that Covid vaccines would be open to adults from June. At the moment Germany follows a strict priority list on who can get the jab first, mainly based on age, health conditions and their line of work.
However, on Friday during a press conference he urged residents to remain realistic.
Spahn said the plan is to lift the priority list in June, opening vaccine appointments out to all adults – but it might not happen at the beginning of the month.
And he added: “This doesn’t mean that we’ll then be able to vaccinate everyone in June.”
Angela Merkel’s chief of staff, Helge Braun, had also urged people not to have too high expectations. He told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper that there will still be long waiting times for appointments because there won’t be enough vaccine doses.
However, the goal is still for every adult to be offered a Covid vaccine by September 21st.
As of Friday a total of 18.5 million people in Germany – around 22.2 percent – had received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine. Around 7.8 percent of the population has been fully inoculated.
Vaccination summit to discuss privileges
On Monday, a meeting between the Chancellor’s Office and the state premiers will take place to discuss the way forward on opening up vaccines to the population in Germany.
It comes after four German states – Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – removed their priority list for the AstraZeneca vaccine, opening it up to all adults (not just over 60s) as long as the patient has a consultation with a doctor.
Green Party health expert Janosch Dahmen, told the FAZ newspaper that he saw the actions of the states as “another sign of the disintegration of the federal government’s crisis management”.
Other states such as North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Schleswig-Holstein, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony say that they are not going down this route.
Another topic at the summit will be privileges for vaccinated people. According to Spahn, there will probably be no entitlement that allows restaurants to open up for vaccinated people, for example. He also doesn’t think inoculated people will be exempt from curfews.
However, Spahn said he’s not sure what the final decisions will be.
‘Stand together’
Germany this week brought in controversial changes to the Infection Protection Act. The law prescribes for ’emergency brake’ measures, such as curfews and stricter shutdowns, to come into force in districts and cities with high Covid rates.
Spahn urged people to remember why the country needed tougher measures. There are many hospitals in Germany where the workload is very high, especially for staff, he said.
Lars Schaade, vice-president of the Robert Koch Institute, called for people to stick to the restrictions. “These weeks are difficult for all of us, so it is all the more important that we all stand together as a society,” said Schaade.
The number of new infections is rising, especially in the 30-59 age group. This group, like young people, has not yet been vaccinated for the most part.
But even for younger and healthy people, “this virus is not harmless”, said Schaade. “Severe courses can also occur in younger people.”
He added that recent studies show 10 percent of those infected developed long Covid symptoms.
On Friday Germany logged 27,543 coronavirus cases within the last 24 hours, and 265 deaths. The nationwide 7-day incidence increased to 164.

Like India, Germany did so well in the first wave, we were told testing was the answer, and Germany’s success was due to their and trace systems, what has gone wrong there
it's the kent variant that has done all these countries in. We were in partial lockdown and it still ran riot with the infection rate. Vaccination is the only solution to it

Israel has recorded no new daily Covid-19 deaths for the first time in 10 months, as the country pushes ahead with its speedy vaccination drive.
The country's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 6,346 on Thursday, health ministry data showed.
The last time Israel reported zero Covid-19 deaths was at the end of June last year, after lockdown measures curbed a first wave of infections.
Israel's outbreak has eased after hitting its peak in January this year.
The Israeli government started to relax lockdown restrictions a month later as vaccinations against Covid-19 were rolled out more widely.
Israel has the highest vaccination rate in the world. On Thursday, the country reached the milestone of five million Covid-19 vaccinations.

i can explain maybe why it is that bad in India
1) many heavily dense populated areas you got there
2) a new mutation, more or less same amount of more infectious as brazilian variant or kent variant i think
there is no need for panic, just logical thinking and quick taking action
good of UK, Germany sending supplies
if i could give advice to their government, maybe set up some temporary hospitals like UK had with Nightingale too, and maybe also give most treatment to those who got most chance of dying without it, those who got better surviving chances without treatment i'd say let them recover in home isolation (and i think like this for my own nation at the moment too, just to lift pressure of hospitals that would be a good option)

A man has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of assault after allegedly infecting 22 people with Covid.
The 40-year-old is alleged to have continued to go to work and the gym despite having a cough and a temperature of more than 40C (104F).
He is said to have walked around his place of work in Majorca, pulling his mask down, coughing and telling colleagues he was going to infect them.
Five colleagues and three fellow gym goers later tested positive.
Another 14 people - family members of the infected - also came down with Covid, including three one-year-olds.
