He didn't like the last question at all.
Much too near the truth for him that one.
Zero coronavirus deaths have been announced in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday.
It comes as Boris Johnson has confirmed England will proceed to lift more lockdown restrictions next week.
Meanwhile, the UK's coronavirus alert level has been lowered from four to three on the advice of experts.
Alert level three means that although the virus is still in general circulation, transmission is no longer high or rising exponentially.
Experts say cases, hospital admissions and Covid-related deaths have all decreased and vaccines are having the desired protective effect, with the latest figures showing a third of UK adults are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and two-thirds have had their first of two doses.
The UK moved to the highest Covid alert level - five - in January as the nation was put into lockdown and there was a real risk of the NHS becoming overwhelmed. By late February, the alert was lowered to four.
The alert system, which follows recommendations by the Joint Biosecurity Centre, is independent from government decisions on easing or tightening restrictions.

Pubs to serve alcohol indoors until 10.30
Alcohol can be served indoors in pubs, cafes and restaurants until 10.30pm from Monday.
Cinemas, bingo halls and amusement arcades can reopen. Adult outdoor contact sports and indoor group exercises can resume.
BREAKING
Meeting indoors and hugging are back
From Monday people will be able to meet indoors.
It will now be possible for up to six people from up to three households to meet indoors in each others homes.
It is no longer necessary to maintain physical distance.
The requirements on physical distancing still apply away from homes and private gardens.
England’s NHS app will be available to use as a vaccine passport from Monday, the government has said - but only for those who have had both doses of the jab.
A paper version will also be available - by calling 119 but not through a GP.
Both will be available from Monday, 17 May, when the ban on foreign travel is eased.
The NHS app is separate to the NHS Covid-19 app, which is used for contact tracing.
People can already use the NHS app to:
request repeat prescriptions
arrange appointments to see their doctor
view medical records
It can also show vaccine statuses, including for coronavirus, but currently this feature must be enabled by a GP before it appears on the app.
The new update will contain a separate feature to display coronavirus vaccine records, so the government said there should be no need to contact GPs.
The app will not show coronavirus test results, but the NHS plans to incorporate this in the future, the government website said.
It advised people register to use the app at least two weeks before travelling.
A paper letter can be requested only at least five days after a second vaccine dose and can take five days to arrive.
Scarlett.

Infections can rise away, as long as it doesn't translate into hospital admissions and deaths
i don't think people are understanding the vaccination clearly. Vaccination doesn't stop you catching covid. It trains your body to create anti bodies so that if you are infected with the virus you have antibodies there to fight it off. So, the upshot is as we remove restrictions, the number of positive cases is likely to increase quickly, but if they have antibodies to then fight it off it's not a problem. If the numbers in hospital increase or the numbers on ventilators increase for those fully vaccinated then we should be wary, but anything else really isn't a problem.
Also, the current vaccines are effective against the indian variant, so lets not panic when there is no reason

hence the reason for the relaxations
the "media" will have to find a new metric to scare people as infections are not going to do it

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/05/the-netherlands-ready-to-relax-covid-rules-if-hospital-admission-decline-further/
The Netherlands is ready to take new steps to wind down its coronavirus measures, if the decline in hospital admissions continues, and that includes longer opening hours for cafes and fewer regulations for sports and keep fit clubs.
‘It remains a balancing act,’ prime minister Mark Rutte told reporters on Tuesday evening, after the national health institute RIVM reported the number of new infections had fallen below 6,000.
In particular, the cabinet plans to allow cafes to open their outdoor seating areas from 6am to 8pm from May 19, so that guests can have both breakfast and dinner outside, Rutte said. Sex workers too will be able to start working again ‘as the last of the contact professions,’ the prime minister said.
Amusement parks and zoos will also be able to open their doors from May 19, as well as gyms and swimming pools, if they follow strict protocols and limit numbers, the prime minister said.
However, because the legislation to introduce compulsory testing for admittance to museums and sports events has not yet been passed by the upper house of parliament, they will remain closed a while longer. Open air museums will able to open, with limits on numbers.
Ministers will take a final decision about a further relaxation of the rules on Monday, May 17 and much still depends on what happens to the infection rate and hospital figures in the intervening period.
In particular, the impact of the King’s Day festivities still needs to be fully felt, Rutte said. In Amsterdam, for example, 17 new big clusters have been identified involving dozens of cases at the same time, he said.
The government’s Outbreak Management Team has said that hospital admissions, including intensive care, must be down 20% this week in order for the changes to go ahead. They currently range between 10% and 20% and are not yet robust enough to allow a further relaxation, according to public health institute RIVM.
Schools
Ministers also plan to decide within the next two weeks if secondary schools can reopen fully, while ditching the 1.5 metre rule, and will ask the OMT for new recommendations. Secondary schools are currently partially open and pupils are still having online lessons because of the social distancing requirements.
The secondary school council VO-raad and pupils’ union Laks on Tuesday called on ministers to open up schools fully again, ‘otherwise there is a risk they may not open fully this academic year’. The school holidays start in seven weeks’ time.
Travel
The recommendation not to travel abroad is also being lifted from May 15, health minister Hugo de Jonge said.
From then, travel to countries with a green or yellow risk level will be allowed, as long as people follow the coronavirus regulations in those countries. ‘But bear in mind that that other countries may also refuse entry to people from the Netherlands because they regard us as a high risk country,’ De Jonge said.
The minister also said that he expects the coronavirus vaccination may become an annual event and that orders have already been placed for vaccines in 2022 and 2023.
The quarantine rules, which have not yet been enacted in law, could also be kept for people from a very high risk country, he said. In addition, he said, he hoped to be able to ditch the 1.5 metre social distancing rule in the autumn.

I mean, from what I've seen Covid precautions have all but gone out the window at this point. HOPEFULLY the vaccines will do their job well in preventing serious illness and death... but cases are always going to rise once people start smooshing together again. I think death numbers are likely to rise slightly at some point. The hope really is that vaccination means it wont start soaring to 100, 500, 1000+

Netherlands: RIVM doesn't expect a new rise in cases for some time now
currently 150.000 people are contagious, according to Jaap van Dissel that is still a high number but we seem to be over the peak
the vaccines limit the dangers of the virus a lot but they will never provide you 100% protection

Speeding up the vaccine roll out would be brilliant. Be good if they manage to close the gap between first and second vaccines and get everyone over the age of 18 vaccinated quickly. Just brings normality closer.
Bolton Council's leader has said there have been discussions with the government about the introduction of "surge" vaccinations in the area, where a high number of cases of the Indian variant have been recorded.
This would mean giving out extra doses of vaccine in the area to immunise a larger section of the population.
David Greenhalgh told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme: "This is an issue of capacity but we have had very, very constructive talks and certainly all the soundings are is that they are looking to progress that as soon as possible."
He said the "vast majority" of cases are in their teens, 20s and 30s - and that getting those aged over 16 vaccinated "will make a total transformation of transmission as it moves forward".

So what was the press conference about
The Indian variant. Monday's easing going ahead but obviously they have to see how that pans out before the June 21st stage can be confirmed as going ahead and there's no suggestion the vaccines won't work on the Indian variant.
So basically, so far so good, get your jab, but use common sense when socialising to ensure we don't end up locked down again.

https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-glasgow-and-moray-to-remain-in-level-3-amid-new-cases-linked-to-indian-variant-12306467
the basic message coming out was that they are keeping their eye on the data and increasing testing around the areas of concern. They are moving the timescale for 2nd jabs to 8 weeks rather than 11 to get as many people fully protected as quick as possible. They can do this because the majority of 2nd jabs are AZ whereas new first jabs are going to alternative vaccines now

you have to take in account as well Zizu, people are testing themselves at home twice a week on top of normal testing so they will be going forward for a PCR though in the main asympthomatic
Numbers still going down across all key metrics
Saturday case numbers are never any lower than the rest of the week as its Fridays data

That's good.
Hopefully they'll be able to contain the Indian variant. :fc:
numbers of infections aren't nearly as important since people were vaccinated. The number of hospitalisations and deaths are the key metrics now. Both those figures continue in a downward trend

Netherlands Saturday 16th May 2021 numbers
4.520 new cases (a decrease of 1.054, and drop down of 22.9% compared to a week ago)
2.183 total number of hospitalisations (day before was 2.250) 220 new hospitalisations
710 total number of ICU patients (also 18 less, and keeps going down quite fast) 40 new ICU patients
13 new deaths
total number of people vaccinated (first and second dose combined) 7 million out of 17 million
so yes we are beginning to see the light at the end of tunnel too, mostly because of our vaccine rollout is beginning to make pace
some good news from Germany too, on friday they had a daily record of jabs administered 1.2 million

Worth remembering that a large proportion of the working-age population hasn't even had their first jab yet so of course we should be expecting cases to rise as we open up, and that really says nothing about how effective the vaccine is. Hopefully, the vast majority of elderly people being vaccinated should keep severe cases and deaths down.

Lord Bethell in todays news
[Just hours later, he was overruled by Boris Johnson
by insisting such travel was off limits - and
was followed by health minister Lord Bethell claiming holidays
anywhere abroad were 'dangerous' with
foreign trips 'not for this year'.
The peer even failed to rebuff the
idea that returning holidaymakers should
be electronically tagged
in quarantine - comments branded 'idiotic' by senior Tories.]

They now list cases (in red) in front of deaths
There is "increasing confidence" that Covid-19 vaccines are effective against all variants, including the Indian one, Boris Johnson has said.
At Prime Minister's Questions, he said fresh data had been reviewed earlier on Wednesday.
The spread of the Indian variant has cast doubt on plans to ease remaining restrictions in England next month.
Mr Johnson also repeated his warning that people should not be holidaying in amber-list countries.
Visits to those countries should only be made in extreme circumstances such as a family illness, he said.
If people ignore that advice people would face "very substantial fines", he said.
The ban on international travel was lifted on Monday.
In its place, a traffic light system has been brought in which divides destinations into three categories - green, amber and red.

no they might not go up, because of vaccinations (more people got better protection, not immune but still it prevents those from getting in hospital or ICU)
we're also starting to see this effect of our vaccinations done in our daily numbers now

the number in hospital is dropping very quickly, that has to be the most encouraging because it proves the link between the virus and hospitalisation has been broken by the vaccine
