Don’t think the lateral flow tests work properly - they arrived and my flatmates testing negative and he has got his positive pcr result already. Likewise the girl he caught it from tested negative on the lateral flow test and her pcr came back positive….
Lateral flow tests aren't for people with symptoms.
But also no they're not as accurate in general.

Pcr is the proper test. I wonder how many are using them and infecting others? Because that’s 2/2 out of people I know so I can’t imagine the accuracy being anymore than 60% which is pretty poor
they require a significant viral load before they show as positive i believe. That's why the trump administration would test negative for days after a covid contact and then boom it would show as positive after several days

So with people speculating that the lockdown may be extended by 2 weeks or even a month .. what are people’s thoughts on air flight/s are they likely to get more and more frequent now or is there a possibility they may all get grounded again over the summer ?

Deaths down 61%
New cases up 40%
Hospitalisation up 14%
On ventilator up 14%
Cases still soaring tbh. Good news, not reflected in death numbers thus far. Not so good news, there is a definite and sustained increase in both hospital and ventilator figures, and overall that is still likely to translate into increased deaths in the coming weeks if it continues to rise.
Cases rising much faster than hospitalisations and deaths is a good sign and indicative of the vaccine being effective.

no lockdowns anymore, the public have had enough of that
So many people have not yet been vaccinated fully if vaccinated at all, that the infection rate is bound to rise. if the death rate rises above 100 then we have cause for concern
Cherie

cases are not exactly soaring they started surge testing in Greater Manchester yesterday and its 2,000 more than last week, we have no idea how many of these cases are asymptomatic

Netherlands: as of June 30th possible for one day events, visitors must have either a proof of vaccination, or negative pcr test evidence
once allowed, no more 1.5 metre distancing
parliament has decided to relax these measures because of the success of the FieldLab test events which were held the last couple months
the relaxing of measures doesn't count for Lowlands Festival which is over multiple days, or Fairs which are also over more than 3 to 4 days usually
the parliament will decide next week on theatre, pop concerts if also indoors the measures can be relaxed

Netherlands:
we have labelled UK as high risk zone, code orange, travellers whom return from UK must go in quarantaine for the full 10 days, anyone breaking this rule will get a fine up to 339 euro
besides UK, also Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh as high risk zones
all of these got code orange, because of the extremely contagious Delta or Indian corona variant
truck drivers don't have to be in quarantaine travelling from and to UK, but different rules for them, not to go making unnecessary contacts in UK, and distancing and wearing face masks all the time

And to be fair even looking at those numbers and extrapolating them with the current cases/deaths numbers... it does CURRENTLY look like there's a large drop in the case fatality ratio.
Hard to say 100% whether that's because of vaccinating massively reducing incidence of severe illness, cases being skewed into younger and less at risk demographics, or simply more asymptomatic cases being discovered because of surge testing in hotspot areas.
Prolly a combination of all 3.
[edit to add]
Any of the three is good news though. Obviously reason #1 would be the most encouraging.
i've gone back and forward on the current situation quite a lot and while i desperately want life back to normal, this delta variant is quite concerning. To be honest, if the vulnerable hadn't been vaccinated we would be completely ****ed at this point.
They reckon without relaxing restrictions further, we will be back at 50k daily infections in a couple of weeks. Now we can say vaccination has broken the link between infection and death, but it hasn't broken it completely, so, what we will have is double vaccinated people thinking they are perfectly safe and then oops, a proportion of them will end up dying. The big unknown is what that proportion will be. We are just not out of the woods yet as much as we all wish it were so

Yeah that’s more or less my take on things..
I see all these fabulously high numbers of vaccinated people but it still leaves millions and millions vulnerable ..

It was daft to link it to a date, they should have linked it to a vax number. Like 75% double-dosed or something.

…I can’t understand the sense of giving another potential date of 19th July….just say there will be a delay and it’ll be monitored closely and reviewed etc….it’s not looking as good as it did but we’ll hope for mid July doesn’t make sense at all…

they have to give a provisional date for all the businesses that are "planning" return of normal operation. If they didnt give a review date, that would create a huge stink too.
They created criteria to measure our readiness for return to normal life and that can't just be tossed in the bin. If at the review date we are still not there, then things will continue as they are

…yeah I totally get that …but rather than give the date straight away/at the same time as they’re postponing this one just doesn’t make sense to me…as there has to be a postponement, monitor it closely and then give the new date out…I don’t mean not to give one at all, but there is no need to replace one with another immediately… but just say there’ll be a review shortly….
Boris Johnson has said the government must "be cautious" as it decides whether to end all Covid restrictions in England on 21 June.
Cases and hospitalisations are on the increase as the Delta variant spreads, with the announcement of the next steps on the "roadmap" due on Monday.
The prime minister told the BBC it was important to ensure any easing of restrictions was "irreversible".
The BBC has been told a delay of up to four weeks is being considered.
Senior medical advisers have urged a brake to the final easing of lockdown restrictions, which, if it went ahead in full, would mean removing limits on social contact and the number of people allowed into homes.
Pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas would also be allowed to operate without capacity limits, with sports events taking place in full stadiums, nightclubs reopening and limits of the number of wedding guests going.

I imagine in 2-3 months time though the vulnerable who got their second vaccine earlier (March time) will have much fewer antibodies and we will be in the same position… they probably don’t last long considering my flatmate has had covid twice within 9 months.

The Uni I work I've just found out that in the last TWO weeks cases have gone from zero for weeks and weeks to now being 70 cases. That's a large jump! So I'm not surprised they have to delay if cases are jumping like that everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to see the tier system return

Well that a mighty big jump from 0 - 70 wow ! This is governments fault for leaving borders open .
i just checked my area again and it's still on zero cases. I think it still remains true that there are hotspots and they are being surge tested and vaccinated, so it's still being controlled as far as is possible

I imagine in 2-3 months time though the vulnerable who got their second vaccine earlier (March time) will have much fewer antibodies and we will be in the same position… they probably don’t last long considering my flatmate has had covid twice within 9 months.
These vaccines are much more sophisticated than an inoculation (which is just exposing to small amounts of the virus), so you can't really estimate how long antibodies will last by comparing it to reinfections of "wild" covid.
It may last far longer, it may not... we don't really know yet. The main concern is still mutations to be honest. It's fairly likely that your flatmate had Alpha (UK) variant 9 months ago and Delta (Indian) variant now.
yeah the immune response from catching covid naturally will be very different to that generated by vaccination, so its not sensible to compare them.
I find all this claptrap about restrictions being irreversible absolute nonsense. A new variant could come along at any time that renders the vaccine useless, so i wish Boris and others would stop making these declarations. It just gives a false outlook
user104658
14-06-2021, 09:40 AM
I think "useless" seems unlikely, I mean it's not going to mutate itself out of being a coronavirus, so i think SOME protection for the vaccines/tweaked vaccines is likely to always be present but yeah it could feasibly drop in efficacy to, say, under 50% in which case it would still stop plenty of severe illness and deaths, but it would be functionally useless in terms of limiting spread. I believe the "standard" quoted figure for a vaccine to be effective on a large scale is something like 65% (of 100% uptake... the lower the uptake number, the higher the effectiveness needs to be).
new details on the delta variant ......
A headache, sore throat and running nose are now the most commonly reported symptoms linked to Covid infection in the UK, researchers say.
Prof Tim Spector, who runs the Zoe Covid Symptom study, says catching the Delta variant can feel "more like a bad cold" for younger people.
But although they may not feel very ill, they could be contagious and put others at risk.
Anyone who thinks they may have Covid should take a test.
The classic Covid symptoms people should look out for, the NHS says, are:
cough
fever
loss of smell or taste
But Prof Spector says these are now less common, based on the data the Zoe team has been receiving from thousands of people who have logged their symptoms on an app.

Oh well. I've probably been superspreading all over the county. It's mostly cleared today though so too late to even test .
Technically it shouldn't have been BUT I was only 10 days after my 2nd dose sooo... not fully double-dosed...
Though my daughter was the first to get it and we did get her tested and that came back negative. So assuming it was the same thing probs not? Who knows. I'm not dead anyway and like I said, was perking up by Saturday and mostly cleared today.

We haven't had the gardener round at all yet this year (he's supposed to be coming today) and I simply do not mow as it's beneath me.
Our grass is, in places, nearly 2ft high :joker:.
One of our sets of neighbours are the types who have their garden preened to within an inch of it's life (not even nice... just... bland... like a new-build garden... the types who would probably get Astroturf) and the woman accosted me in the garden last week demanding to know "when I planned to cut the grass".
To which I (tongue in cheek :hmph: ) replied that we're "supporting biodiversity".

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/06/economy-set-to-grow-strongly-and-smoothly-says-central-bank/
Netherlands: The Dutch economy will bounce back from the coronavirus crisis ‘strongly and smoothly’, the Dutch central bank says in its new economic forecast.
This year, the economy is set to grow 3%, to be followed by 3.7% in 2022, the central bank said. By 2023, it will normalise again, showing growth of an estimated 1.9%. The bank is basing its forecasts on the vaccination programme which is leading to measures to limit contacts between people being phased out.
This, the bank said, means consumer confidence will recover on a wide scale, driven partially by low unemployment. Unemployment will, however, rise from 3.6% this year to 4.5% in 2022 as more people join the labour market looking for work.
Earlier forecasts were less optimistic about the growth and recovery. ‘But the economy’s ability to adapt would appear to be greater than thought, and world trade is also performing better than expected,’ director Olaf Sleijpen told broadcaster NOS.
The Dutch economy has performed better than the EU general, contracting by 3.4%, compared with a eurozone’s 5.1% in the first three months of this year. This is partly due to the fact that the Dutch economy is not as reliant on tourism as that of Spain or France.
House prices too are contributing to the growth, and the central bank expects them to rise by 10% this year, followed by 5.5% in 2022 and 3.5% in 2023.
Next government
The central bank notes that public finances are under control and austerity measures or higher taxes are not necessary at the moment.
This means the next government, Sleijpen said, must focus on structural issues which were problems before the pandemic, such as the shift away from natural gas and bottlenecks in the housing and labour market.

percentage increases look bad because the numbers are pretty small. Given that so many of the population are not fully vaccinated we are doing pretty well because this is the most restrictions have been removed in 16 months. I think we should continue a gradual removal of restrictions while vaccinating like crazy.
One of the most misleading figues is the % of adults vaccinated, because young teenagers are not included in that and are capable of spreading covid like wildfire

people have been told repeatedly that they book holidays abroad at their own risk. Pleading ignorance doesn't work
Anyway, it seems to me the government want people to spend money at home rather than abroad, and we should ensure as much as possible that our own leisure industry recovers before flying off elsewhere

The government is right to extend in my view the easing of restrictions.
I think their wedding do's and don'ts are quite odd.
It was stupid of any to label June 21st as freedom day in any case.
weddings is a definitive category, so they can remove restrictions on that and see how it goes, it's basically a slowed down easing of restrictions rather than stopping the easing completely.
We have to try and open up while being reactive to hotspots of concern. I think its the right approach. Wait until july until all over 18's have been offered the jab before opening up night clubs seems a very sensible strategy

To be fair, it is ENTIRELY sensible, for multiple reasons... international tourism should be one of the very last things to return. I mean look at places like Australia and NZ that have been mostly trundling along OK throughout... a lot of that is BECAUSE they have such massive restrictions on travel. And have been able to have most of their own internal stuff continue as normal.

40.000 people at Wembley for euro2020 semi finals and final
and also audience at Wimbledon
the thing is though, things like the delta variant will still get into the country whether there are border restrictions or not. All that restricting tourism does is slow its propagation down a bit. That may be beneficial because it gives us more time to react, but recent history shows that people don't give much of a crap about not spreading it, and any hope of curtailing a new variant will go completely out the window come july
Take the alpha variant as an example, all these countries closed their borders to the uk almost immediately, and europe still got swamped with it a month or 2 later

Yes because the variant was obviously already active everywhere by the time it was identified. Closing borders reactively to new variants is never going to work because it's an "after the horse has bolted" situation... international travel should be massively reduced regardless over an extended time frame. Not "because we've identified variant ______", but simply on the assumption that there will be more.

yeah, i agree with that, all this stuff that the uk should have closed borders earlier over delta was the same, we already had it, and because delta is so infectious it was inevitable we would have hot spots. No country should be considered safe until covid is wiped out, and thats not going to happen ever

The things like "We only have 50 cases, close the borders!!" with new variants are a bit daft. If we have 50 identified cases of a new strain then we have hundreds if not more actual cases ... it's out there and it's going to spread.
It is a tough one really. I mean I give examples like Aus, but let's face it Australia has ALWAYS had slightly "isolationist" tendencies so simply shutting up shop was much more feasible for them.

australia have never been an international hub either, so we are just not comparing like with like. They also don't have anything like the population density that we have

I don’t this far see the “huge surge” they keep referring to in terms of the lockdown? I’m not saying they’re wrong or that it isn’t in the pipeline but… where is it in the numbers?
There used to be a lot of measuring in terms of “doubling every X days” (2 days, 3 days etc) but current figures are going up by, roughly, 20% every 7 days… nothing like those old surges.

Here's a fun thing that as far as I can tell bears little resemblance to the official guidance for isolating ...
... my youngest is now home until next Monday, not because she is a covid contact, but because ... "someone she MIGHT have been in contact with at school MIGHT have been in contact with someone who has now tested positive".
:umm2:
This wasn't even the guidance back when schools first reopened last year! Person testing positive isolates and contacts isolate... right? Since when do contacts-of-contacts isolate?
But then, they're not even saying to isolate. Just that the class is to stay off school. They can still leave the house as normal.
Bizarre.

Germany: new rules on masks that comes into force next week
Several German states announced on Tuesday that they were relaxing rules on mandatory mask wearing. We break down what the new rules are state-by-state.
Baden-Württemberg has confirmed that it will relax the obligation to wear masks in schools.
The relaxations will only apply in districts where the seven-day incidence of infection is below 35 cases per 100,000 and there has been no outbreak at the school for two weeks. If that is the case, masks will no longer be required “in classes in all types of schools,” state health minister Manne Lucha said in Stuttgart on Tuesday.
The new rules will come into effect at the end of next week.
Lucha raised the possibility of relaxing the mask-wearing rules in other areas, such as outside in public spaces, in well-ventilated train stations and at bus stops but stopped short of making a specific commitment.
State leader Winfried Kretschmann suggested that the south-western state would move slowly on ending mask-wearing rules. Warning that ending the rules too quickly could end in a fourth wave of infections, he said: “Let’s not be cocky, otherwise we will pay bitterly.”
The southern state of Bavaria has no immediate plans to relax its rules on masks. “I advise restraint here,” said state leader Markus Söder on Monday in Munich.
Arguing that “premature relaxations have proven to be a mistake in the past,” Söder said “we shouldn’t always disregard everything when the skies clear up.”
Nonetheless, in the state capital of Munich, the requirement to wear masks in the inner city was ended on June 9th.
Berlin has decided to end some of its mask-wearing rules. In the capital, masks will no longer have to be worn on the pavements of shopping streets and in busy squares, as has been mandatory since late last year. Masks still have to be worn in outdoor areas where social distancing isn’t possible.
Masks will also no longer be required outdoors at the zoo, Berlin’s Senate decided on Tuesday.
But there will be no change to the rules for buses and trains: FFP2 masks will continue to be a requirement on public transport.
The rules in the capital still have to be confirmed but are set to change early next week.
In view of low infection rates in the north of the country, the Hamburg senate has loosened its mask rules. Outdoor mask wearing will now only be required on the weekend in crowded areas.
The port city will keep hold of its mask rules at weekly markets and indoors as well as on public transport.
In the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, masks will no longer be required outdoors as of next week. The rule change was confirmed by state leader Manuela Schwesig on Tuesday, who also said that tourists would now only need to present a negative test upon arrival in the state, which is a popular summer vacation destination.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state government has relaxed the rules on wearing masks in public transport. From now on a medical mask will suffice where once an FFP2 mask was necessary. Germany’s most populous state has also ended the requirement for children to wear masks inside the classroom.
As of next Monday masks will no longer be required in classrooms in any school in Rhineland-Palatinate. State education minister Stefanie Hubig confirmed the move to DPA on Tuesday.
Hubig said though that masks would have to be worn on the way to the classroom. Meanwhile, the new rule is only valid as long as the seven-day incidence of infection remains below a value of 35, she added.

Getting the pupils to wear masks in school is virtually impossible to enforce and it has been a nightmare in our high school - still probably one of the worst hit areas in the whole country - infections wise
Currently I’d guess it’s 50/50 split of mask wearers in the corridors but a higher % in class situations where it’s easier to enforce

"For every 100 patients treated, experts calculate, it would save six lives."
Hmm more info needed on that stat. Does it mean that 94 of the treated patients would die and 6 wold survive, or would MOST be likely to survive anyway and 6-more-than-before survive. Because that completely alters the effectiveness.
At face value if they would otherwise have all died it's 6% effective... but if only 20 would have died of the 100 but now only 14 die it's 30% effective. And of course, if 94 would have recovered and now all recover, it's 100% effective.
Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc are highly effective after two doses at preventing hospitalization of those infected with the delta variant, underscoring the urgency in getting people fully protected, according to health authorities in England.
The Pfizer and BioNTech SE shot is 96% effective against hospitalization after two doses, while the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford Covid inoculation is 92% effective, according to an analysis announced Monday by Public Health England. Those results are comparable with the protection offered against the alpha variant, which first emerged in Britain, the data show.

Some good news ... maybe .
###
Sky News
A new drug to treat COVID has been described as "very exciting" in its ability to lessen the effects of the virus in seriously ill people.
It uses a therapy called monoclonal antibodies - artificially manufactured proteins that prevent the virus attacking the body.
What are monoclonal antibodies?
Monoclonal antibodies have been around for a while, used to treat other diseases like cancer.
Once introduced to the body, they stick to antigens - proteins on the outside of a cell, bacteria or other molecular structure like a virus, capable of causing disease.

Deaths are staying low, which is brilliant news.
Deaths are staying low, which is brilliant news.
Guess that’s the key issue ... unless we’re left with hundreds of thousands of long Covid victims living with the effects for years to come .
Incidentally the ‘death’ figures we refer to are those who so sadly die within 28 days ..
What are the stats for all the Covid deaths including those longer than 28 days .
These poor people are just as important surely .
Why are we only counting the ones that die within 28 days anyways - sounds ludicrous tbh

I mean... there is increasing evidence that the vast majority of "long covid" doesn't actually exist and/or is partially psychosomatic. Did you know that it's reported far more often in the UK than anywhere else in the world - and there are large crossovers with CFS/ME?

Because from test to death is almost always faster than 28 days, if there is going to be a death. A very small number may hold out longer, but that number will be much smaller than the number that artificially inflates deaths in the UK (that any death after a positive test counts, so some of those deaths will actually NOT be from Covid).

Interesting , thanks ..
I just presumed there’d be far more numbers than we know about given they catch Covid , then get poorly and then around day ten - sometimes need hospitalisation for a while and then maybe move onto ventilation for quite some time ??
How does all that fit into 28 days ?

I think things tend to progress to the ventilator stage relatively quickly, if they're going to get that bad at all. That's based on what I remember them saying way back in the first wave though.

[Covid: Ryanair and Manchester Airports Group
take legal action over travel traffic light system]
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57505736
[Ryanair and the owner of Manchester, London Stansted
and East Midlands airports are to launch
a legal challenge against the government
over the travel traffic light system.
They call for more transparency about
how the government decides which countries qualify
for the green list of safe places to visit amid the pandemic.
The BBC understands it has the backing
of other major UK airlines.
Ministers say the system
"cautiously manages the risk of new variants".
The traffic light system rates countries green,
amber or red based on their Covid risk.
Travellers to countries rated green will
not need to isolate on their return,
but they will need to take a Covid test before and after their trip.
Arrivals from amber countries will need
to quarantine, while red-list countries have
the strictest rules, with only UK or Irish nationals,
or UK residents, allowed to return - and they must
pay for a 10-day stay in a government quarantine hotel.]

What’s the thinking behind wfh forever :suspect:
if business can operate effectively with most employees working from home, it saves them a shed load in overheads, i'm sure they will be all for that

A lot of my client's at work have told us they have no plans to return to the office. Productivity and job satisfaction is up, absence due to sickness and lateness is down, profit is up due to lower overheads so I can see why for some companies it would be a bonus to retain WFH for a long time.
However, it's not for everyone. I don't like working at home, I don't personally think I'm anywhere near as productive and I miss the interaction with colleagues massively but it would be nice to have the choice if my son was sick say or during holidays. He's at an age where he entertains himself and doesn't need looking after but is too young to be left alone for the whole day so the option would be good.
I don't think it should be a forced thing by the Gov onto businesses though, it should be looked at on a case by case basis and the decision taken in the interests of the company and its employees.

It seems to be talking about enshrining the “right” to request to WFH in law, and presumably stops companies from refusing it without a good reason.
The company I work for has already decided to go this route voluntarily and has made it permanent that people can choose to work from home whenever we want. It was already part of my contract from the start pre-Covid but I was a special boy back then :hee:. It’s basically just my arrangement expanded out for everyone.
Interestingly enough though, most people CHOOSE to be in the office about 50% of the time, Sinai don’t think it’s going to lead to dead cities and everyone working from home all the time.
I’d go in more and probably will at some point. Currently limited by childcare.

I can definitely see why sickness leave is down. Sometimes if you’re just feeling “a bit off” you don’t feel at all up to getting showered, dressed, and out to sit at a desk all day so would call in sick - but you’re not SICK sick, just a bit run down, and could still happily plonk in the couch with a laptop and get in with a few things. I think I’d have to be properly bedridden to call in sick these days… otherwise I’d just let them know I’m not 100% so they know to expect a slower pace than usual. Then sit on here all day arguing about Meghan Markle and answering the occasional email and Teams message.
…….like most days…….

…it was always often the thing anyway …(…depending on the job obviously…)…that people were genuinely not feeling great so would arrange to go home…but would look at what they could do from home because it’s more at an own pace that fits with how they’re feeling and their energy levels …‘I’ll go and work from home today or I’ll stay and work from home today…’…was always a thing for those were it was a feasible option…also because if full salary was paid for sickness, some always felt that it was a fair compromise to do what their illness allowed…
