Yes Prof Gowers
Susie Bonniface on the SkyNewsHD
paper review saying the UK 3rd wave
is not stoppable
So far the infection increases have been kept within the hotspot areas. It's also worth noting that they are doing a massive amount of surge testing in those areas, so infections will rise, even if people have zero symptoms
bots the balancer
Seems I’m not the only worrier ..

i'm also saying we should be cautious too, but after the vaccination program we have had, we cant remain locked down. We should maintain social distancing until the infection rate is right down though

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/05/vaccine-target-will-be-missed-but-nl-is-back-on-the-road-to-normal/
Netherlands very much back on the road to normal, the vaccine target is mid July everyone above 18 (or at least those who want the vaccine)
''According to health ministry estimates, nine million doses of vaccine have now been given and 14 million people are eligible.''
Football
''However, the social distancing rules and ban on large groups will remain in force in June, and that will impact on the way the European football championships are experienced, prime minister Mark Rutte said.''
For example, cafes will not be able to rent in big screens to watch the game and there will be no outdoor screenings either, Rutte said. ‘It is good news that we can do what we can, so let us be sensible [about the football],’ Rutte said.
The changes the government is introducing from June 5 – step three in the plan to open up the economy again – involves allowing museums and cinemas to open to a limited number of visitors and allowing cafes and restaurants to serve guests up to 10pm, indoors as well as outside.
Gyms
Sports schools and gyms can also offer lessons indoors again, as long as the 1.5 metre rule is observed. Team sports can also resume, although only the under 18s will be able to take part in competitions.
‘Step three is really an end to the lockdown’ Rutte said. ‘It is a great thing to be able to leave it behind.’
However, people who are fully vaccinated should still keep to the social distancing rules and wear a face mask in shops and indoor spaces, De Jonge said.
And home working is still the order of the day, Rutte said. ‘It is good news this evening, but we are not yet there.’
Holidays
The European Union’s coronavirus certificate will come into effect on July 1, De Jonge said. Given that not every adult in the Netherlands will have been vaccinated by that date, it is ‘only logical that we share the costs’ he said, referring to calls for free PCR tests for people who plan to go abroad on holiday.

Sadly some people will be sensible some will not - some people haven’t made any changes all throughout this nightmare ... at least if there’s a lock down in place and fines to pay ( in theory) more will not be acting as there’s nothing to worry about .

that will quickly change if the youngsters start dropping like has happened in india. Young people are dying there from it, and that can't be explained by social circumstances because young people have largely been unaffected by covid all around the world until the indian variant hit

Possibly.. as I’ve mentioned previously we have two 16 years old girls from the same high school in our town — apparently very poorly in hospital as we speak ..
It’s certainly made zero difference to the behaviour of our pupils this last week ..

Netherlands: RIVM's decision to vaccinate children between 12 and 18 is a strategic one for upcoming winter, which will make it easier to keep covid under control
if also all children from age of 12 receive at least one dose, their estimation of the R-number will be at 0.85
if only all adults would be vaccinated, then the R number would be just below 1
so this is the better of the two scenario's, to lift pressure of our doctors, care workers
how higher the percentage of vaccination, the lower the R number

COVID-19 'has NO credible natural ancestor' and WAS created by Chinese
scientists who then tried to cover their tracks with 'retro-engineering' to make it
seem like it naturally arose from bats, explosive new study claims
In a new 22-page scientific paper, exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com,
Norwegian scientist Dr. Birger Sørensen (top right) and British Professor
Angus Dalgleish (bottom right) concluded 'SARS-Coronavirus-2 has no
credible natural ancestor' and that it is 'beyond reasonable doubt' that the
virus was created through 'laboratory manipulation.' The study, due to be
published in the scientific journal Quarterly Review of Biophysics Discovery,
is set to make waves among the scientific community, as the majority of
experts have until recently staunchly denied the origins of COVID-19 were
anything other than a natural infection leaping from animals to humans.
While analyzing COVID-19 samples last year in an attempt to create a
vaccine, Dalgleish and Sørensen claim they discovered 'unique fingerprints' in
the virus that they say could only have arisen from manipulation in a
laboratory. They said they tried to publish their findings but were rejected by
major scientific journals which were at the time resolute that the virus
jumped naturally from bats or other animals to humans.

Over in Wuhan, something happened which has now led to 3.5 million deaths
(and about 170 million cases) across the world. The scientists most closely
involved have disappeared, as has anyone who spoke up to denounce what
happened, as has physical and documentary evidence of what was going on
in the lab. If there was ever a Dominic Cummings-type person within the
Chinese communist regime, he has not been allowed to appear for seven
hours before a televised committee of the National People’s Congress to tell
what he sees as the truth that Comrade Xi Jinping is unfit to be president,
has a “crackers” girlfriend and a lying health minister and has covered up the
cause of the greatest avoidable public health disaster of all time. In the
vanishingly unlikely event that such a person ever existed, we can be
confident he is now dead.

The infection increase from last week is not that dramatic given they are surge testing
Realistically we will be able to judge the numbers in another couple of weeks as it takes time for things to filter through. With a bit of luck the vaccination roll out continues to prove itself

I genuinely think it’s far too early to be adopting scare stories like that; we spent most of last year having similar scare stories with new discoveries/new variants and in the end, the vast majority have (symptom and demographics wise) turned out on the statistical longer-term to all be more or less exactly the same. I genuinely think the stories coming out of India are simply because their population is gargantuan and testing levels likely extremely low... it’s probably far more widespread and endemic in the country than the official figures. Thus, rare situations (such as younger people being severely ill) will seem less-rare but it’s actually because of the sheer numbers who have caught it.

all i can think is sanctions of some kind but they must be punished even if its for the cover-up, reluctance to provide information, warning.
and WHO with their pathetic investigation must also be held to the metal
As TS pointed out from the beginning, that lab at the origin was always highly suspicious, and the chinese cannot be trusted at all, so what i don't understand is why the WHO let them off the hook so early on. The only thing it can realistically be is corruption. If the WHO had come straight out and said, this looks really bad ... the world would have shut its borders much more effectively. It probably was already too late, but still. I dont think much can be done about China, but we sure can fix the WHO

Have to say, some of the stuff with the WHO was extremely sus from the off... mainly just that statements were coming out supposedly from the high-ups at the WHO that sounded like CCP propaganda. It was bizarre. They didn’t just absolve China of wrong-doing, they were like “Actually China is a shining example to the world of the best handling of anything, ever”.
There’s a strong argument that they were appeasing them for access, but I don’t think it’s impossible for there to have been some aspect of actual control or coercion.

South Korea have been doing amazing ever since start of pandemic
China's approach also good i guess
the only asian countries who seem to be struggling now Japan, and more recently India
although India's daily case numbers are decreasing i've seen yesterday and day before
Japan just needs one strong lockdown now to push through this wave of theirs they face currently
overall the asian approach compared to europe or even the US is much better, since privacy in terms of app is also no problem there compared to over here, so the corona warn app works more efficiently there

The head of NHS Providers has said "very, very few" Covid patients in hospital in England have received two coronavirus jabs - showing the vaccines provide "very high" levels of protection.
Chris Hopson said patients tended now to be younger - meaning there was a lower need for critical care.
But he said it was "incredibly striking" how busy hospitals were, as they deal with non-Covid backlogs.
Trusts were going "full pelt", he said.

Gave us a New Number of Deaths in the UK
20 High School Children have Died from Covid
Going back to the Total of High School Children Deaths he said its 30.
King also stated Hospitalization
is increasing except for one the East of England.
…to be fair though, we don’t know the ‘problems’ so caution is always the way and assuming problems as well and assessing them…last year we were only a few months in so there is a lot more known now than there was then and with that knowledge some of the scientific advise is still to apply caution here and now as the problem risk is still there and it’s a crucial time in seeking a light out of the COVID tunnel…freedoms do need to return but freedoms also need to have problem risks and caution applied to them…

Netherlands: schools are as of today fully reopened, a MUST to be open for the entire week, full school days
so no longer a choice if some want to remain closed
parents must have self test kits, testing their children each day before they head off to school, and they must notify school staff of rapid test result, in case of a positive test, that specific child must take a pcr test at area in front of school, and head back home and await test result
it's fine to be cautious at the right time, its also right to stop worrying when the time is right too. Getting out in the sun and fresh air does wonders for peoples mental and physical health. Outside the hot spot areas, infections are non existent. In my area, we haven't had a single infection in a month
…it’s isn’t about worrying, it isn’t about one thing or another, it’s about balance…and showing caution with our freedoms as we’re experiencing them again…and as scientific advise suggests…not a problem isn’t really something that we could know the accuracy of…so caution, always….sunlight has uplifting benefits but crammed beaches…not so necessary…

I would imagine that laws around releasing data could be different when it comes to children Arista. They could have a multitude of underlying health problems. Why is it an issue to you that 20 out of 150,000 could have been high school age. Ever death is the loss of a loved one regardless of age

…absolutely, bots…that has no bearing on anything that I’ve said though in that we don’t know for sure what ‘is or isn’t a problem’ so caution and balance is always advised…and that’s exactly the advise given by some experts right now…what advise is taken or practised etc…well, that’s a personal choice …very packed beaches may or may not be problematic, we don’t know for sure…hence the measured advise in looking at less crowded/populated outdoor spaces as being a good balance …

Maybe they don’t want folk like me working in high schools worrying even more than we are doing ...
They should have highlighted the numbers and maybe the teenagers would have taken the pandemic more seriously and behaved accordingly instead of convincing them they were all going to be unaffected by Covid.

it's always been linked to the vulnerable demographic, so there can be very high infections with low death rate.
As i was saying a few days ago, over in india there is evidence of younger folks dying from that variant, and the last thing we want is for that to be replicated here because so far across the world young folks have been affected very little

The UK economy's recovery from the pandemic is set to be stronger than previously thought, a leading international agency has suggested.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says the UK is likely to grow 7.2% in 2021, up from its March projection of 5.1%.
The OECD raised its forecast for global growth to 5.8%, compared with the 4.2% it predicted in December.
However, it warned that growth would not be shared evenly.
The UK's growth is set to be the fastest among the large rich countries, the OECD says.
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak attributed the strength of the forecast to the success of the UK's vaccine rollout and the government's Plan for Jobs.
However, he cautioned that with debt at nearly 100% of GDP, there was a need to "ensure public finances remain on a sure footing".

Sadly, I think this will be the case with many developing countries, the official numbers won't reflect the true situation. e.g. I suspect the true death toll in India is likely far higher than the reported number. Probably Brazil, too.

the vaccines are effective against the delta variant, so the worst case is that we have to vaccinate to younger age groups. We have the vaccines, we have the distribution and vaccination processes so its within our power to sort out
In theory the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) can be reprogrammed extremely quickly to target any new strain that arises and technically don't "need" extensive testing as they're essentially the same vaccine in terms of "wots going into your body" - although there might be regulatory changes in some places needed for that sort of fast-tracking.
So looking at the longer term, with that being the case, if ongoing "new strains" are an issue then life going back to normal relies mainly on massively increasing vaccine production & roll-out infrastructure in a more permanent form (most likely large, permanent vaccination facilities).
Will most countries actually pull their finger out in terms of organising something like that? Well... who knows. But in theory that's what might be needed.
The mRNA tech is truly fascinating and an absolutely gargantuan medical breakthrough in general... that aspect of it has sort of gone under the radar because it's all "linked to Covid". If this tech had been completed and rolled out in "normal times" for a pre-existing virus, it would have been huge news on its own.
user104658

This is why I think it’s ridiculous to extend restrictions, the whole point was to ensure the NHS does not get overwhelmed and now some hospitals don’t even have a single covid patient… making deaths zero is never going to happen, but that seems to be the new metric we have to achieve now that hospitalisation are dramatically down (which was meant to be the metric and purpose of the lockdown and restrictions). I think certain restrictions should stay such as masks on transport etc, but I am talking about closing down of businesses, festivals, parades, nightlife etc.
1) our way of counting deaths, just dying and having a positive test is ridiculous - most are not even COVID-19 deaths, just our testing capacity is so high that people do in fact die within 30 days of a test if you are testing 100,000+ people a day…
2) covid is international it’ll never die out, people will always sadly die from it, but it’s numbers are so few now it is below many other causes such as suicide etc - and the lockdown may actually kill more people than it saves (and likely a lot younger people with a full life ahead of them)

Netherlands: tuesday of course as usual the day we look back at last weeks numbers
over last week: 20.608 positive tests (a decrease of 18% from the week before)
over last week: 555 new hospitalisations, 103 new ICU patients, in both it is a decrease of one third compared to week before
R-number half May was at 0.8 (that means 100 infected people can infect 80 others
so the effect of the vaccinations has been very much visible now
total number of vaccinated people are 9.5 million

thanks to good corona numbers

So where exactly are the stats from ?
Near the bottom it clearly says that these people believe that the UK figures are artificially inflated ..

they are uk covid figures, and people have been arguing about what a valid covid death is right from the start. The way the uk does it, anyone that dies within a time period that caught covid is put down as a covid death, and of course if these are vulnerable people they could easily have died from some other cause. Personally, i think the best figures are the ONS death stats that show excess deaths from year to year, those cant be manipulated the way the covid figures are
user104658
01-06-2021, 02:21 PM
Essentially the UK figures are "worst case scenario" figures, over-estimates that cover the possibility that ALL deaths after a positive Covid test are Covid deaths. That's not likely and results in "inflated" figures but, it's less problematic to OVER-estimate the numbers than "be optimistic" and under-estimate them. That's why they've used UK stats. They're saying, "these are the percentages at worst, they may even be lower".

For people who can fool themselves for a morale boost maybe. The number is obviously low and that is great - but it’s also obviously not zero and there’s little to be gained from pretending that it is. You end up like a Trump fan on election night, seeing him ahead in the votes and celebrating a win, then finding it hard to accept that the votes had only been half counted.

Netherlands: 40.000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses expected to go to Suriname next week
at first was thought to be half June but it is possible to send them earlier
there'll be between 500.000 and 750.000 vaccine doses to Suriname from Netherlands, also some work made for a donation of 50.000 Moderna vaccine doses
yesterday first plane departed for that country with PPE and Oxygen supplies

The country cannot "scamper down a rabbit hole" with every new variant, Sir John Bell has warned, as Boris Johnson comes under increasing pressure to stick to reopening on June 21.
Sir John, a leading member of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine team, urged the Government to stick to the unlocking roadmap and ensure we "move on" rather than delay reopening the country due to new variants.
The Oxford University professor of medicine told BBC Radio 4's Today: "If we scamper down a rabbit hole every time we see a new variant, we're going to spend a long time huddled away".
He cautioned that coronavirus "is here to stay probably forever", and said that the Government should focus on managing "hospitalisations, serious disease and deaths" rather than cases.
The Prime Minister is due to speak this afternoon about the prospects for the June 21 reopening, but No 10 cautioned on Tuesday that it had not yet received the definitive data from government scientists and modelers at this point.
Mr Johnson is under increasing pressure to reopen as planned after the UK yesterday recorded zero Covid deaths for the first time since the pandemic began, and the NHS prepares to reach the milestone of three-quarters of adults vaccinated with their first dose by the end of Wednesday.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/coronavirus-news-daily-deaths-coronavirus-vaccine-lockdown-news/
things can be re-opened and people can still be sensible, they are not mutually exclusive or at least they shouldnt be. I'm certainly going to be cautious while still living my life.
We have had doom and gloom about variants from the moment we had a vaccine and a positive way out of the chaos. If and when a variant becomes a problem we can do something about it, like tweak the vaccine and have a booster jab. No need to run away and hide anymore

The UK has hit a "dangerous moment" in the pandemic, an expert has claimed, amid warnings that "vaccine-beating variants" will emerge in the future.
Dr David Nabarro, the World Health Organisation's special envoy on COVID-19, said that despite low infection levels, unlocking restrictions too quickly in the UK could create a further "spike" in infections.
He also issued a warning about variants, saying "vaccine-beating" forms of the virus will almost certainly emerge sooner or later.

well i more meant we've come a long way in terms of our hospitalisation and ICU numbers
especially ICU which was first at very deep into 800, amid third wave
and hospitalisations also down quite a lot compared to amid third wave
so at least finally some pressure lifted from doctors/nurses their shoulders
our daily death numbers have always been kinda low, idk why (even amid third wave those weren't drastically high)
