COVID-19: Lockdown rules 'not boundaries to be pushed against' - as minister admits to supermarkets concern...

Lockdown rules are "not boundaries to be pushed against", a government minister has warned - as he admitted there was concern at non-compliance with social distancing measures in supermarkets.

As the second week of England's third national lockdown begins, ministers are considering how to achieve greater enforcement of social distancing and mask-wearing in supermarkets.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said the government doesn't "want to go any tougher" than the current lockdown rules, but suggested there could be a tightening of existing restrictions.

"The lockdown is actually pretty severe, we're asking people to stay at home, don't go out, if you have to go out it's only for exercise," he told Sky News.

"This virus loves social interaction and we are all pro-social animals, and it's the worst thing we do is to socialise.

Yeah or as I have encountered quite a bit recently is old couples coming towards me so I walk really close to the road in order to give them a lot of space and they decide instead of allowing the distance I have given them they walk even closer to me! Happens in shops too. The amount of people that try and get close to you is ridiculous. I do online shopping all the time now and any bits of milk or whatever i get from the shop at the corner. It's household mixing. You can argue that the rules are too restrictive, but the police are not wrong (in terms of the current restrictions).

Not really though as we are allowed to exercise with one person from another household. They arrived in separate cars and are maintaining distance.

you are allowed to meet with one other person to exercise with, I mean they are social distancing in the pic ...sure, but were they when they were fined, I never see people actually physically distancing when out walking, obviously some will be from the same household but some wont

they got their coffees....they invited along a photographer...it's all very odd

The tighter rules Boris Johnson could enforce to reduce infections...

Concerns have arisen in Whitehall that the current exercise-related caveat to the instruction “stay at home” is being misused to facilitate socialising.

Too many people are using the provision to meet in pairs in the the park for a coffee, it is feared.

A government source told The Telegraph: “At present people are using the exercise exemption of lockdown to basically go and socialise with friends. It’s what more we can do to say, ‘Hang on, that’s probably not the best thing to do’. It may be we tighten up on things like that.”

i like my country's ICU chief Gommers a lot

he was at a entertainment news show here Shownieuws via skype from his home answering questions regarding vaccines

he made good valid points too for those who have doubts regarding production and testing of vaccines

1) pharmacists cannot hold any information back, they had sworn like an oath to be honest at all times

2) the Vaccines definitely have proven to be very effective, especially Pfizer (which they are surprised about it being 95% effective, whereas they normally expect effectiveness with vaccines around 70-80%)

3) and he also answered a question if he will remain active at tv appearances, on social media to answer the youth their questions they have about corona, vaccine, lockdown strategies, more like keeps on going with educating those who don't believe in corona and lockdowns

also Gommers is someone who looks at other countries too regarding coronacrisis, more notably UK, Sweden, Germany, France

Boris Johnson spotted cycling seven miles from Downing Street in Olympic Park...

Boris Johnson was spotted seven miles from Downing Street cycling around the Olympic Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Prime Minister was wearing his TfL hat and a face mask when he was seen cycling with his security detail in Stratford, east London, at around 2pm.

Official Government guidance on exercise says it should be limited to once a day and “you should not travel outside your local area”.

The park has been noticeably busy with families exercising and the PM is said to have been concerned by what he saw in the area.

Nothing? Thats the whole point of lockdown to drive down infections...

Well if everyone was following the guidelines then you’d hope that that would SLOW things down somewhat BUT the suggestion was that it was the vaccinating of the 15 million by mid Feb that would have an effect on things ..

But as I said the majority of ones currently being vaccinated will be staying safe at home anyways ..it’s unlikely they’re adding massively to the daily infections

Before Christmas they said it was the 13 - 30s that were spreading the infection yet just a few days ago I saw that the group with the most infections currently was the 60 -69s !!

That group won’t be done till March I’d guess .

she’s called a bully - such micro aggressions by the public and press imo. She is just a very strong stern woman that goes by results and performance, as most should, rather than pandering to the lazy and weak. May come across as rude sometimes but to get things done when she’s got a whole country demanding resulted from her who could blame her. Churchill is one of the best PMs of history and he was a little rude, but he saved millions as a result. Sometimes leaders do what’s best for the country

When my flatmate had his performance review at work for underperforming he said he was suicidal and got to stay at his job... he was not at all and admittedly used it as an excuse. I now am more aware of people saying stuff to get a result they wish to achieve

Someone willing to sell their story and the fact they’re suicidal for thousands of pounds I highly doubt truly was.. If someone is truly that down they don’t profit off of it generally

You should probably read up on what happened rather than make assumptions. An independent investigation found her guilty of bullying and Boris did nothing about it.

You should probably try to reconnect with your sense of morality if you ever had one, it seems to have been overridden by your worship of the tories.

NL: Red Cross is going to assist administering vaccines over here

now some regulations as of tomorrow morning

- 1.5 metre social distance rule for students at high school back

some numbers since the lockdown

cases have dropped from 56.440 to 49.398 (a decrease of 12%)

also the number of people with positive test dropped from 13.7 to 12.8%

the effect of lockdown is mostly visible in age group of people above 30 (speaking of hospitalisation and ICU decrease)

so the lockdown works, so it is good that has been extended for another 3 weeks

De Jonge, who has been heavily criticised for the slow start to the Dutch vaccination programme, also said some 35,000 nursing staff have already been vaccinated, and 200,000 appointments have been made.

By the summer, everyone over the age of 60 should have been vaccinated, De Jonge said. By the autumn, the entire population should have had the jab.

Travel

Rutte also criticised the number of people going on foreign trips and said that people should stay in the Netherlands until April, unless they have a serious work or family reason to travel. Describing holidaymakers as ‘very anti-social’, Rutte said: ‘every foreign trip is a risk for yourselves and everyone around you,’ Rutte said.

Rutte also said there are no indications as yet that the general election, planned for March 17, would not go ahead.

One option is to bring in a curfew, and the Outbreak Management Team – the cabinet’s main coronavirus advisory group – has been asked to report back on that specific option. ‘We do think it could be an effective measure to limit infections via the home,’ Rutte said.

Schools and daycare centres will remain closed and secondary school pupils who can attend lessons will now have to keep 1.5 metres from each other, where possible, Rutte said.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham say they have developed a Covid test that delivers results in just FIVE MINUTES.

The development, hailed as a world first, could be the breakthrough to help get more people safely back to work and play, and control outbreaks more effectively.

It is on course to be fully tested and ready by Easter, say the scientists involved - including a PHD student.

The test could be game-changing, offering on the spot results for airports, restaurants, schools, workplaces and events as well as in healthcare and hospital settings.

CNN)A leading Chinese Covid-19 vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech was just 50.38% effective in late-stage trials in Brazil, significantly lower than earlier results showed, according to a statement published by the government of Sao Paulo Tuesday.

While the number exceeds the threshold required for regulatory approval, it falls far below the 78% previously announced, raising questions as to the veracity of the data and fueling skepticism over the apparent lack of transparency regarding Chinese vaccines.

Some good news ......

A large-scale trial of a new treatment it is hoped will help stop Covid-19 patients from developing severe illness has begun in the UK.

The first patient received the treatment at Hull Royal Infirmary on Tuesday afternoon.

It involves inhaling a protein called interferon beta which the body produces when it gets a viral infection.

The hope is it will stimulate the immune system, priming cells to be ready to fight off viruses.

Early findings suggested the treatment cut the odds of a Covid-19 patient in hospital developing severe disease - such as requiring ventilation - by almost 80%.

It was developed at Southampton University Hospital and is being produced by the Southampton-based biotech company, Synairgen.

A course of treatment with the new drug could cost around £2,000, which is not that expensive for a hospital treatment.

"To be viable it will have to represent good value for money," Synairgen's chief executive Richard Marsden said.

Alexandra Constantin, 34, was the first person to receive the treatment as part of this new trial, after she was admitted to the hospital with coronavirus on Monday.

She has a young daughter at home she is desperate to get back to.

Demonstrating the treatment, the nurse handed her a nebuliser that makes the drug into a fine mist, which Alexandra inhaled as deep into her lungs as she could.

That ‘28 day’ stipulation does bother me somewhat ... so many die more than 28 fats after their positive test do the actual number of deaths could easily be 100,000+ .

I know but it's not like you can put an immediate stop to that just with 'tougher measures' - there's always going to be a lag on any restrictions taking effect. These current ones seem to have just started to work ten days after the lockdown which is about the timeframe you'd expect so fingers crossed this is about the peak of hospital admissions

We've been hoping that a long time MTVN.

Personally I think longer lockdowns of sorts were needed.
This stopping and starting hasn't helped things in my view.

The problem is too we don't have all the data the government has and gets from the science and health sources.

[All three of the mutated versions of the coronavirus
found in recent weeks – the ones from Kent,
South Africa and Brazil – have had a change
on the spike protein of the virus called N501Y,

one belgian woman had died of south african strain apparently

symptoms of that are more similar to a stomach virus, but 100 times worse, so south african strain is very different from british strain or the original covid-19

Actual nonsense; it's the same virus, it hasn't mutated into super-norovirus. There have been plenty of cases of SA strain Covid, the symptoms and outcomes are exactly the same, it just has higher rates of transmission.

The British SA and Brazilian strain of original covid, it’s like it’s a mystery where it originated
