yep, the numbers of infections went down in scotland with the school holidays. The question was whether that was coincidence or directly linked, and i guess we will soon find out

Tomorrow, teachers are back but kids go back Wednesday or Thursday (in the majority of council areas).

The number of detected infections will definitely go up - because they have high school kids taking lateral flow tests twice a week, so they will pick up a load more asymptomatic cases. A large increase in positive tests won’t even necessarily mean an increase in actual cases. It will be seen as such, though. A bit of a mess really.

WHO flags fake jabs in India, Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it has identified counterfeit versions of India's primary Covid vaccine, Covishield.

The doses were seized by authorities in India and Africa between July and August, a WHO statement said.

It also said the vaccine's maker, Serum Institute of India, confirmed that the doses were fake.

The WHO warned that fake vaccines "pose a serious risk to global public health".

It called for their removal from circulation

There has been no official statement by the Indian government, but local reports said the country's health ministry was investigating the matter.

"Although we have a strong system to prevent such cases, with this development, the only thing we want to ensure is that no Indian received a fake vaccine," an unidentified health official told the Mint news website.

Covishield is the Indian-made version of AstraZeneca's jab and is the most widely used vaccine in India with more than 486 million doses administered so far.

Serum had supplied millions of Covishield vaccines to countries in Asia, Africa and South America - as part of deals that were inked with various governments and the global Covax scheme for poorer countries.

India also sent Covishield doses to some of its neighbours as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "vaccine diplomacy".

But in the wake of a devastating second Covid wave in April and May, the government decided to accelerate the vaccine drive and banned exports.

Serum has since maintained that their priority remains India's own needs - and they may not export again until the end of this year.

India, which is the second worst-affected country in the world, aims to vaccinate all its people by the end of this year.

About 13% of the population has been fully vaccinated since the beginning of the drive in January.

The total includes at least 482 people who succeeded in crossing the Dover strait on Wednesday onboard 21 boats – a record for a single day.

Australia: Sydney extends lockdown, and puts 2 million under curfew

A lockdown of Australia's largest city Sydney has been extended to the end of September as authorities struggle to contain a wave of Delta cases.

The city's five million residents have been under stay-at-home orders since late June.

Infections have more than doubled in the past week. There were 642 new cases on Friday, after 681 on Thursday.

From Monday, two million residents in the city's worst-hit suburbs will live under a daily curfew from 21.00-05.00.

"I apologise to the vast majority of people in those communities who are doing the right thing but for our health and safety moving forward we need to make these difficult decisions," said New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Australia set a record on Thursday for its highest daily infections since the pandemic began.

Currently over half of Australia's 25 million people are living in lockdown, amid Delta outbreaks also in Melbourne and Canberra.

Sydney remains the biggest concern. So far, its outbreak has killed 65 people.

The rest of NSW is also in lockdown, but Ms Berejiklian said restrictions outside Sydney would be eased on 28 August.

The harshest rules target Sydneysiders living in 12 particular areas of concern.

Along with the curfew, people in those suburbs - which are among Sydney's poorest and most ethnically diverse - will be limited to just one hour of exercise daily.

The measures were designed to prevent more people "losing loved ones", the premier said.

Critics say the state government could have acted more effectively to tackle the outbreak early on.

Australia has recorded 971 deaths from Covid, fewer than many nations.

But Delta's entry into Australia in early June has challenged a nation initially widely praised for its pandemic response.

Frustration has built over strict border policies and frequent lockdowns.

Residents in Melbourne on Thursday marked their 200th day of lockdown since the pandemic began.

Critics have also accused the federal government of complacency over its slow vaccine rollout.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison's government is under significant pressure, and has scrambled to secure more doses in recent times.

Vaccinations have picked up in recent weeks. More than a quarter of Australians are fully vaccinated.

I do think both Aus and NZ have been guilty of over-confidence. That's not to say that they haven't handled it well, they have, but that's what's resulted in the over-confidence... they have relatively small populations and could easily have gotten out way, way ahead in terms of vaccination but they'd done such a good job of keeping it from spreading at all they felt like there was no rush .

On the plus side, the physical size of both relative to population should mean it doesn't "boom" like it has in countries with higher population density. They might have issues with large "pockets" in the cities but should be better able to manage those pockets with so much open space between populations.

Risk of contracting coronavirus at GP is same as at a festival, experts say

The coronavirus infection risk is similar at the Grand Prix in Zandvoort as it would be at a festival, experts told NU.nl.

The Grand Prix in Zandvoort will commence in September with camping spots available for attendees. The camping site will be able to accommodate around five thousand people. Half of the spots are reserved for the crew. In total, more than 200 thousand spectators have been anticipated at the races.

“The manner in which you organize the Grand Prix is similar to how you would organize a festival”, field epidemiologist, Amrish Baidjoe said. “When looking at from a standpoint of preventing infection, I do not see a difference.”

The fact that camping at the Grand Prix is permitted but multi-day festivals have been forbidden is not comprehensible to the events sector.

Clinical epidemiologist Frits Rosendaal from the UMC in Leiden also did not see what sets the GP apart from a multi-day festival. “The point stands that the Grand Prix is a multi-day event where a large number of people partake.”

Zandvoort mayor David Moolenburgh said on Friday that camping at the Grand Prix cannot be compared to a festival. At a festival, the vast majority of the public also sleeps on the grounds. This is a relatively small campsite compared to the number of visitors," the mayor said.

The mayor said he comprehends why the decision sparked disbelief in the events sector “but that is a consequence of the choices they make in The Hague.”

In accordance with coronavirus measures, only two thirds of the seats are allowed to be filled and all visitors have to show proof of vaccination, recent recovery from a Covid-19 infection or show a negative coronavirus test to enter.

More spectators are allowed at the Grand Prix than at a festival because during the races there is fixed seating. At festivals, a maximum number of 750 people are allowed.

“For now it is incomprehensible”, Baidjoe said. “We see that certain groups are not yet fully vaccinated. I would say: wait until the vaccination figures are higher.”

Police in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney have clashed with thousands of people protesting against Covid lockdowns.

In Melbourne, mounted officers used pepper spray when elements of a 4,000-strong rally broke through police lines.

Police arrested 218 people, and at least seven officers were injured.

In Sydney, where lockdown measures have been extended for another month, more than 1,000 officers dispersed protests.

It came as the state of New South Wales (NSW), of which Sydney is the capital, recorded 825 new locally-acquired cases, the highest number for any Australian territory in a 24-hour period.

Actress Melissa Joan Hart said Wednesday she contracted COVID-19 despite being vaccinated against the virus and encouraged people to "do better" as the virus continues to spread throughout the U.S. and around the world.

"I got COVID. I am vaccinated, and I got COVID," Hart said in a video she posted on Facebook and Instagram. "And it's bad."

The Sabrina the Teenage Witch star said the virus is "weighing on my chest" and making it hard for her to breathe. She said she suspects one of her three children also has the virus and is hoping her other children and her husband do not become infected.

"I just really hope my husband and the other ones don't get it, because if someone has to be taken to the hospital, I can't go with them," she said.

Hart wrote in a message accompanying the video that she was "not posting this to be political or gain pity" and wanted only to "share my journey." She said in the video that she was "mad" she and others grew "a little lazy" over time in taking precautions against the virus' spread.

"We tried, and we took precautions and we cut our exposure by a lot," Hart said. "But we got a little lazy, and I think as a country we got lazy."

Hart added she was also frustrated that not all kids are required to wear masks while at school. Though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last month reversed an earlier decision about masks and now recommends people wear them indoors regardless of their vaccination status, decisions about mask mandates are decided by local leaders and vary throughout the country.

Hart said she was "so thankful" her youngest child has worn a mask every day. "Now, if he doesn't get it, I can at least tell him he was a superhero to those in his classroom, because he protected his teacher and his classmates from it," she said.

Hart said she was "scared" and "disappointed."

"I just wish I'd done better," she said. "So I'm asking you guys to do better. Protect your families, protect your kids."

Hart added, "It's not over yet. I hoped it was, but it's not. So stay vigilant and stay safe."

Newsweek reached out to Hart for further comment and will update this article with any response.

More than 166 million people in the U.S. had been fully vaccinated against the virus by early August, according to CDC data. Though confirmed breakthrough cases have thus far been uncommon, The New York Times reported earlier this week that such cases appear to be on the rise.

In response to concerns that vaccinated individuals may become less immune over time, federal health officials on Wednesday recommended booster shots for individuals who have already been vaccinated against COVID-19. The additional shots are expected to be offered to vaccinated individuals starting in late September.

Vaccines never have been and never will be a magic 100% protection from illness, it’s a myth that they are and always has been, but it’s one that has been pushed very successfully for decades to counter anti-vax rhetoric and now people don’t really understand the main purpose of vaccination. And if you try to tell the medical truth about it you’re immediately labelled anti-vac :joker:.

When my eldest was just a babeh, we knew a lady and her infant son who both got measles. He had completed his MMR schedule, she was fully vaccinated, they still both got symptomatic measles. Does that mean that the measles vaccine doesn’t work? No of course not, it’s been a massive part of bringing childhood measles from being a common ailment to almost unheard of. But it highlights the simple truth that there is no such thing as a 100% effective vaccine, and people need to understand that, because when we keep telling people that vaccinated = definitely safe, they believe they’re at zero risk and don’t react appropriately to illness. “What are these red spots I’ve had for days? What do you mean it looks like measles? Can’t be measles, we’re vaccinated!” … while spreading it unchecked for a weekend.

You can still catch something you’re vaccinated against. Herd immunity does not require 100% immune community coverage. Get vaccinated. Vaccines work. But you might still get ill. Those are the facts but people prefer the “they work 100%” rhetoric… especially in the US. They don’t really do nuance in their public messaging.

Nope, only been back a week and we know from 18 months of experience that stat changes reflect what happened 2 - 3 weeks previously. This is from general reopening and relaxed social distancing UK wide:

That’s not to say that schools going back won’t affect it. It will. There will be another clear bump from that in about a week or so.

I’ve been hearing rumours that few if any of the deaths of double-vaxxed people are those who had AZ? Also that general protection from severe illness lasts longer with AZ than the others (higher T-cell response). I can’t find much online to link to to back this up though so take with a pinch of salt. I’m just happy to hear things that suggest dirty AZ is better for a change :umm2:.

Scotland's record number of Covid cases is partly being fuelled by the return of schools after the summer holidays, the deputy first minister has said.

John Swinney said the data showed that high numbers of young people had tested positive in recent days.

And he said the case for secondary pupils continuing to wear facemasks in school was growing "ever stronger".

A total of 5,021 new cases of the virus were reported on Wednesday, a record high for the second day running.

That was up from 4,323 in the previous 24 hours - although the rate of positive results being returned was down from 14.5% to 11%.

Tuesday's figure had led First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to warn that the country was at another "fragile and pivotal moment" in the pandemic.

Ms Sturgeon said she could not rule out the possibility of some Covid restrictions being reintroduced - although the levels of serious illness remain relatively low at this stage.

The increased positive tests is largely down to testing, though… they’re making high school kids do lateral flow tests twice a week (followed by a confirming pcr if lateral flow is positive) so basically it will always be the case that more cases are picked up during term time than holidays. Teens aren’t testing twice a week in the holidays. It doesn’t account for any increase in hospital numbers because (despite press scare stories) the vast, vast majority of cases in children and teenagers are mild. There obviously could be a resulting uptick if they catch it and spread to family members - but those won’t show up in a week. They literally went back to classes last Wednesday.

bots
25-08-2021, 07:41 PM
its basically attaching an agenda to stats, the number of infections will bounce up and down and unless there is a constant density of testing it really is irrelevant. I believe the ONS data is more consistent in the way it's captured, so it is probably the better reference

AZ is toxic rubbish

 it's a balance of things really. It seems there is a slightly higher risk of side effects with AZ compared to Pfizer, but now also that protection from AZ may last longer than Pfizer. Though no data on how much longer.

There have also been studies showing that a "mixed" approach actually has some benefits - one AZ and one Pfizer (or more accurately, one viral-vector vaccine and one mRNA vaccine, the brands don't really matter as much).

Yes and unless he has full custody - which seems unlikely - it's not just "a say" he literally cannot stop her from having them vaccinated if that's what she wants to do. His permission is not required. That's the case even in couples who are still together - one parent can give medical consent, they don't even have to tell the other parent, although of course it will be on medical records that either can get access to.

Was just going to say this - my son's school won't do anything without a consent form - if kids need medication during the day parent's have to go in to administer it (unless it something like an inhaler). The only thing they will do if they need any kind of medical treatment is give them a wet paper towel - the number of bump notes my son used to come home with when he was younger with the treatment "cold paper towel administered" was stupid.

It's been dubious that masks do much at all (the basic unfitted kind) since we found out that Covid is actually airborne. They probably bring cases down a little so no harm in wearing them, but I don't think there'd be a huge overall difference in the numbers we're at now (overall deaths, overall cases since the start, etc.) if we'd never worn them. Again though... even if it's a 2% difference that's still a prevention of over 2000 deaths.

De ja vu; we had falling cases in Scotland for weeks and then they started spiking again. England is on that downhill slope now but will spike in the next few weeks.

Probably but our journey has been a bit more bumpy than Scotland where it just seemed to go down pretty fast and then shoot up again - our cases got pretty high in mid-July, then they went down again, then they went up again as the effects of full unlocking kicked in, and now they've started going down back again (or at least basically plateauing). I think things being open here longer than Scotland actually seems to have helped matters as it took place just as schools broke up in the peak of summer whereas Scotland lifted restrictions near to the same time that schools went back causing a double whammy of increased cases

England certainly will go up again when the schools go back next week but so far our reopening this summer has been pretty successful I think

Definitely not true if it's supposedly about UK figures. Most recent I can see are that 48 million have had first dose and 42 million have had both doses, which means there are currently 6 million who have had one dose but not the second, and the majority of those will be people who simply aren't due the 2nd dose yet. They're currently doing far more 2nd doses than 1st doses so that "gap" is closing every day.

There will inevitably be some people who get one but not the second... that's unavoidable. There will be people who got the first but then simply didn't bother with the 2nd, yes, but also (being blunt) there will be elderly people who got one dose and were dead before getting a 2nd one. Not necessarily because of Covid-reasons, just because... well... elderly people do still die.

Well just had a pretty stressy day today ..

Back to work ( High School) well over 1300 pupils and 150 staff ... not one person wearing a mask ... not in classrooms nor corridors etc .

I initially went in with mine on and there was one teacher who had hers on but within 10
minutes we both took them off .

Cant speak for her but I felt uncomfortable wearing it when nobody else was .

Still seems crazy with there being over 30,000 new infections and around 200
deaths each day ... and this variant being more easily caught .

I called in Pets At Home a few minutes ago and not one customer or member of staff wore a mask !

Since we have plenty of vaccines, they should offer the booster to everyone.
Why throw them away? It's a waste.

It's not about stock levels, covid risk for under-16's is so low that the vaccine is almost as risky as the illness and that's with current knowledge... the argument for doing it has been that it might offer additional herd immunity and protect adults, but there are some absolutely massive ethical implications there.

There's also the fact that current stats make it look a lot like the vaccines are highly effective at stopping severe illness, but actually not as effective at stopping spread, meaning there's not actually much point vaccinating people who are unlikely to get severely ill as they can carry & spread even if vaccinated.

agree, there is plenty evidence that doubled jabbed people catch covid, they are just protected from serious illness. As kids don't get seriously ill with it unless vulnerable there is no net benefit to jabbing that age group unless vulnerable. Set against the risk of side effects, it's a no brainer for kids, don't vaccinate them

I dont buy the risk factor. The reason being they are willing to, and do, inject vulnerable children with it.

Because vulnerable children are more at risk from Covid, and thus the balance of risks falls more in favour of getting vaccinated. It’s not really complicated to be honest.

Having listened to the JCVI the reasoning is sound as vaccinated or not they can still transmit, the same can be said for over 16s also, think they should have cut off at 21 personally unless for vulnerable teens

Social distancing is no longer possible or required in many venues, you wouldn't go to a football match now and expect social distancing so same applies if you choose to take the risk of air travel

Agreed - this is horrendous whatever is going on, however I am very skeptical that it’s that “she tried to go shopping without a vaccine passport”. These Twitter accounts are full of misattributed photos and videos, need to see an actual source.

As for what’s going on in Australia, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the past really. They managed to dodge it for a year and a half and it’s only now hitting… so the situation there seems to basically be what it was here way back in March/April 2020 in the UK, and then later in the summer 2020 in the US.

not proud of my own nation either, stupid decisions here too because we got a coward of a PM who is giving in to those vile anti-lockdown protesters

first of all letting go of face mask compulsory (which is a huge mistake) now letting go of social distancing in schools/uni's (another major mistake) also letting go of class quarantaine procedure when a child is tested positive for covid, because well otherwise those stupid parents have to be annoyed (seriously Rutte, De Jonge any of our bunch of losers)

well i'm going away for a few days as of tomorrow, but upon arrival in bungalow i'm going to be wearing a face mask, because i always am extra careful, not just for covid, but other virusses too, already have been all my life + my parents will be wearing face masks too when going to shops for souvenir or takeaway area to order our dinners or at checkin at reception (because we already know thx to failure Rutte the staff there won't be wearing a mask since that is no longer compulsory :idc:)
