whats nuts is there are people who travelled back to the UK at Christmas time who are actually resident in Spain but have been unable to get back as their paperwork for residency is being processsed, you literally had to be resident to get in if flying from the UK, so from one extreme to the other

Former Secretary of State and Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael
Pompeo earlier this week strongly suggested that the coronavirus sparking a
deadly global pandemic escaped from a Chinese lab in Wuhan, where
scientists were conducting research on bat coronaviruses.
He said at a Center for Security Policy event Tuesday:
While I can’t prove where it came from, I can tell you the overwhelming
amount of circumstantial evidence suggests that the Chinese were working
on this virus in their laboratory, that the laboratory was unsafe, that the
laboratory actors, whether they were doctors or technicians, were conducting
a set of activities that made the virus more human-to-human spreadable
and likely more lethal as well, and then somehow it likely got out of that
laboratory.
He added, “I hope I’m wrong, but their reckless [behavior] in terms of
covering up where patient zero came from, or where this virus actually began
in Wuhan suggests that there is something that they do not want the world
to know.”

[Health officials are investigating a new Covid
variant which has caused 49 cases of infection,
mostly in Yorkshire and the Humber region.
Public Health England (PHE) has been
monitoring the VUI-21MAY-01
or AV.1 variant since April.
PHE said there was "currently no evidence
that this variant causes more severe
disease or renders the
vaccines currently deployed any less effective".
The agency said additional testing
and tracing was being carried out.
Dr Kev Smith, from PHE, said scientists had
been watching and sequencing the
variant since the
"strange combination of mutations"
were spotted a few weeks ago.
"So far the people that we have identified
are not particularly infectious,
they're not really getting more sick than other cases
of coronavirus and we're not seeing anything
particularly worrying about it," he added.
Dr Smith said that PHE had classified it
as a "variant under investigation"
and would continue monitoring
its spread through extra testing.
"At the moment, we don't think
it's more infectious than the other
coronaviruses that we are seeing around."]

Will Beckett, co-founder of the Hawksmoor restaurant group,

Some patients in England have been asked to wait up to three years for a dental appointment as the NHS struggles with a backlog of work from the pandemic. Healthwatch England says rising numbers of people are struggling to access NHS dentistry and complaints have risen by a fifth at the start of this year. Practices were closed from March to June and have since run at limited capacity. Some practices stopped seeing NHS patients. But the government says work is under way to tackle the backlog, with extra urgent dental clinics and priority access for the vulnerable and those most in need.

That's interesting if true, would suggest that "Long covid" is the immune system struggling to completely remove the virus and a dose of vaccine gives it the "boost" that it needs to clear it.

Hospitalisations are up. Deaths are too but that's not really indicative of anything as the numbers are so low, it could just be random reporting variation. Hospitalisations is likely to be statistically significant though.
Unfortunate reality is that the majority of the adult population is not fully vaccinated yet. Less than half of the adult population has had both doses, and one dose is not enough.
Realistically they would have been better waiting until 60%+ of the adult population has had both doses.

These hotspots of infection were also associated with higher than normal rates of people not being vaccinated, so that could account for the hospitalisation increase.

Netherlands:
vote for quarantaine compulsory for foreign holidaygoers in the country reached a majority
also the testing laws vote reached a majority, so only events with a must for a official negative test
relaxing of measures isn't sooner than June 9th, even though numbers are decreasing more rapidly than expected, we more want it to go closer to zero
advice too for public to stay home for euro2020 matches and not go to the bars
R-number can stay below 1 our Outbreak Management Team or OMT had said, only they said it will stay barely below 1 because the vaccines don't fully protect you and not everyone has been vaccinated yet (if this number goes above 1 again the chance of a new wave is again possible)

I think today is the first time we've seen a rise in hospitalisations
https://i.imgur.com/nWXzmnJ.png
there was a rise in hospitalisations yesterday too. I think it's something to be watched, but the reason there are these various hotspots, is that they also had lower uptakes of vaccination, so of course if they catch it and are vulnerable, then the hospital cases are going to rise

Yeah ... so much for the accepted figure of ‘under 100 new infections’ to release all lockdown measures .
I’m wondering if we will EVER get our figures that low ..

Generally speaking I really don’t think young people are taking this pandemic seriously at all ..
We are near Bolton and our town has two young girls (aged 16 - same high school) who very poorly in hospital as we speak with Covid19 - thought to be the Indian variant.
Young people are still having ( illegal ) parties and have been for quite some time . They just don’t get it .

It’s simple enough maths even country-wide... less than 1/3 of the country has had both doses of vaccine, and more than half of the vaccines are only 70% effective. We are waaaaaay way below the threshold of vaccine herd immunity but there’s this bizarre idea that we’re good to go.

the uk data shows that pfizer and az both proved 90% protection after the 2 dozes. Most of the very vulnerable have had the 2 dozes now, so, if the vaccine is working, which is still an if for me, then those being hospitalised should be younger or not double jabbed. Most of the hospital admissions in the Bolton spike have been people who have not taken up the vaccine. In my Manchester council district (MCC), there have been 0 deaths on the last 7 days and 17 people admitted to hospital in last 7 days which compared to january is miniscule and its a far larger council area.

Wasn't Hancock himself on the telleh recently (as in last week) quoting 30% for both Pfizer and AZ after one dose, rising to 70% AZ and 93% Pfizer after two doses, in a push to emphasise the importance of getting both doses?
Wasn't Hancock himself on the telleh recently (as in last week) quoting 30% for both Pfizer and AZ after one dose, rising to 70% AZ and 93% Pfizer after two doses, in a push to emphasise the importance of getting both doses?
im just going from a journal i read last week. They said the extended interval between the jabs seemed to be what increased the effectiveness to 90% for both. It was all over the news sites
----
PHE epidemiologist Meaghan Kall said there was “evidence to show that Pfizer (initially thought to have the edge on effectiveness) is actually running head-to-head with Oxford/AZ”.
The Pfizer jab provides a similar level of protection against illness as Oxford/AstraZeneca, and cuts the chance of death by 95-99 per cent.
There is still not enough evidence available from surveillance studies – which monitor the experience of all 30 million vaccinated people in England – to determine the effect of Oxford/AstraZeneca on mortality rates, or to discover by how much transmission is reduced once most people have had two doses of either vaccine.
Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “This new data highlights the incredible impact that both doses of the vaccine can have, with a second dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine providing up to 90 per cent protection.

in that hospital are now 24 covid patients on ICU, during the peak of the third wave there were 38 covid patients on ICU beds, average age group is also going down, according to ICU chief Susanne Heijsenberg, this is proof that vaccinating truly helps in the fight against corona
pressure on hospital staff remains high because now normal patients must receive treatments, and there is higher chance of more accidents now we move into ''new normal'' society

Netherlands: events with many audiences are possible, that has been proven out of the FieldLab test events the last few months
the government has 4 risk levels
''worrying'' = events are possible with 100% audience capacity, among those outdoor festivals
''very severe'' = no festivals, but still certain events possible with seating audience only and maximum of 50% capacity
at the moment we are at the ''very severe'' stage but due to decreasing numbers by the day, more can be made possible very soon they think

Yes of course ... I’ve had both jabs and it’s remarkably reassuring to know that statistically I shouldn’t get seriously ill or die ... but more infections will inevitably result in more hospitalisations and deaths ..
How can it not ?
Unless you’re suggesting that despite this rapid increase in the number of infections the successful vaccine program will still mean the number of hospitalisations and deaths will continue to drop week on week ?
Today’s slide from the briefing even shows slight increases hospitalisations in the last few days

6,959 Covid-19 Indian Variant
have been Identified
You could look at it as 5 in 25 million people (both jabs)
Realistically it is actually 5 out of 49 though ...

Just listening to LBC radio .. many are supporting the idea of “televised learning’ as opposed to online learning .. they do it on other countries apparently.
Just needs the government to commandeer some tv channels..maybe all the BBC ones ??
A few for primary schools , one each for years 7 through to 11 , another for colleges .... seems outlandish but it it’s done elsewhere who knows ??
Supposedly a high % of pupils struggled with getting online but everyone has a telly ..

Have they any underlying issues, what age are they? Sadly some people who have been vaccinated will still get ill and have to be hospitalised.....same as those who have flu jab etc etc

no its not. If 10000 people would have been in hospital pre vaccination then 5 out of 10k is a really good number, you cant take vaccinated vs unvaccinated in hospital and gauge the effectiveness that been quoted for pfizer and AZ cause its not using the correct data source

i feel more relieved myself for my own nation, how it seems we are over that third wave into more calmer times
yes i worry too for Indian variant, what happens now in UK, can happen here too, but tbh now i agree with majority of public, that we should also open up more and try recovering our economy in this more stable moment
so my advice for UK people, don't travel abroad, to prevent indian variant going to multiple countries throughout europe, throughout the world
go on holiday in own country
however, i think given the current trend in infections etc it would be reckless to open everything up again in july. We should maintain social distancing etc until the infection rate is right down

the journos cant ask follow up clarifying questions as they are not there and get muted
they are not there by choice by the government - tactics
the issue is below:
"We could only introduce testing for people going from hospital to care homes once testing capacity was built."
There was no requirement to test patients being discharged from hospital into a care home until 15 April 2020, government documents show.
Guidance to care homes dated 2 April 2020 said people who were COVID-19 positive could be discharged to care homes but should isolate once there.
25,000 would be discharged in total before routine testing was finally introduced in mid-April.
So he was asked if he told the PM that they were being tested and after 3 questions he said "it was not his recollection"
aye right
and 22 million people who have had both jabs (most of whom are over 60) are not in hospital,

the moment last year that it looked like we were going to have a pandemic, i said on here, Hancock is the last person who should be in charge of it. I havent changed my view.
Hancock has lied, he has reframed time lines after the event, he has re-interpreted statements made after the event. I think he is disingenuous. So. i don't give him any quarter. He is responsible for a lot of failures and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it when the enquiry finally happens

It's a pity during this pandemic over the year that more hadn't been more anxious and therefore more cautious.

interesting discussion at one of Germany's talk shows Maybrit Illner last night
more about they are now going to begin vaccinating children above age of 12, in a attempt to bring infection risks down in schools
also one science journalist (via skype) there said we all have to share our vaccines with the entire world (especially in some of countries with the variants: Brazil, South Africa, India) because we shouldn't take the risk of the vaccines helping against the variants, or against variants to possible still come (because there might also come one whom the vaccines have no or little effect against)

We should be able to open everything after the vaccination programme is finished.
That could be end of July, I think.
…I can’t imagine it ever being ‘smooth’ because surely for that to even be any real possibility, the whole world would have to be at the same stage in their vaccination progressing…and it’s not just a little bit apart with that, some are going to be years apart…and the virus will inevitably gather and progress more quickly than human ability and possibility so adjustments will always have to be implemented…?….our projections are always given as if we were and island…because we are an island……but we’re not an island in isolation…the most accurate that projections have been so far as I can see are with islands that have become more isolated…

It would be if it was going to be people lining up all the way - at the moment there are still enough people unvaccinated but keen to be vaccinated that the pace hasn't slowed. At some point once all of the "eager" 1st and 2nd doses are done... we're going to hit a huge roadblock of people who need a bit more coaxing. And then a brick wall of people who are simply going to refuse.

There's no evidence of it being more severe in the UK ... the situation in India is tragic, but it's as much down to the demographics in India as anything else. MASSIVE wealth divide, poor general health, poor nutrition, limited access to sanitation, and their healthcare system has completely caved. Life expectancy in India is still only something like 68, even with Covid totally out of the equation... in the UK it's now nearly 80.
Basically the living conditions for many in India makes developing complications more likely, and then the healthcare situation means there's nowhere to go when that happens.

Exactly.
It's incredible it's thought oh the UK is all vaccinated, all's well, do what we like.
As you say until the World is fully vaccinated, there will always be increased danger of variants in the UK arriving too.
Unless we pull up the drawbridge and close all airports and ban all travel in and out of the UK.
Which is why we should be as eager to see the vaccination roll out intensified far more worldwide, not just in the UK.

A quick google confirms this. Deaths are currently surging amongst a younger demographic in India because, for whatever reason, the vast majority of cases for their current wave are within that demographic, so it's really just an illusion of scale. And also a complete lack of hospital beds and (crucially) ventilators. If you get severe symptoms over there you're pretty much ****ed, basically, hospitals are at capacity and there's very little help available. They're basically having to take a stab at who is most likely to survive, and take someone else off a ventilator to give it to that person instead. A really grim situation to be in... they had similar things happening during the first wave in Italy. Thankfully, the UK hasn't had to go down that route.

what you say is true, but it should raise a big red flag on what the potential impact could be. I remember us saying before very early in the pandemic that our general health care and living conditions would make a difference, but in highly populated cities we got it just as bad. At the very least, we should be reconsidering relaxing social distancing .... it's bad enough with the old and vulnerable, but if youngsters start dropping like flies it's going to be another level of devastating

To be honest the last 15 months or so have just meant that I’ve added more little ‘coping’ routines to my day and all my senses are at a heightened level .. that’s not necessarily a negative thing but it is more exhausting.
So I don’t ever ‘relax’ or ‘chill’ out’ as my mind never really switches off plus I only sleep around 5 hours theses days which is about an hour less than I used to ..
Strange times ....

True, I think Italy should have been a stark warning for Europe... they were caught off guard (being the first place it really took off in Europe) and it was, by all accounts, an absolute nightmare at the peak. I do think that effect is obviously going to be compounded somewhere like India; a population of nearly 1.5 billion with a huge proportion not having access to what we would consider to be acceptable healthcare. They still have numbers higher than the entire population of the UK living in objective poverty... i.e. not even at basic sustenance levels... and many more than that way below the poverty line of developed countries.

There aren't many countries where it's below 65 and practically all of those are in Africa, for various reasons I suppose.
I think essentially once you rule out other causes... humans are just generally fairly robust until 60-65 and then we kinda start falling apart if the maintenance isn't there (good healthcare, healthy lifestyle).
That's also how you get to live to nearly 100 if you happen to be, for example, a Royal... with lifelong fully catered meals and impeccable healthcare.

So far the infection increases have been kept within the hotspot areas. It's also worth noting that they are doing a massive amount of surge testing in those areas, so infections will rise, even if people have zero symptoms
