We do have an extremely high death rate compared to infection rate so something has clearly gone wrong.

It will come out in time.

I think it’s partially down to that we are a small mass island with a huge population crammed into it .. plus we apparently have ,comparatively speaking , a large % of elderly folk as well .

Next week a lot of schools are having a staggered return really we can say that 99% of pupils will be back in schools on 15th March so a crucial time will be two weeks or so after that date I’d say ..

Netherlands: health minister de jonge: corona self test kits could be in the shops next month

Fast coronavirus tests which don’t require medical supervision could be available in supermarkets and pharmacies by next month, health minister Hugo de Jonge said on Friday. Fast tests, which people can take themselves, could be used by employers, and at schools and universities to making working conditions safer, De Jonge is quoted as saying by broadcaster NOS. Currently fast tests can only be used under medical supervision but that clause should be removed from contracts, the minister said. This would enable manufacturers to apply to have their test authorities for self-testing. Testing is key to stamping out the virus and making tests simpler and easier to access has a key role in this, De Jonge said. ‘We can do this by taking the tests to the people, rather than people to the test,’ De Jonge said. ‘That is why we want to make it possible for manufacturers to make a self-test version of their fast tests.’ Trouw reported on Friday morning that millions of fast coronavirus tests remain unused in warehouses because the government wants to take a ‘careful’ approach to using them. The government has at least 26 million fast tests in stock but they won’t be used for months until the results of pilot projects have been assessed, the paper said.

They specifically mention Brits though

Cyprus will allow British tourists who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 into the country without restrictions from 1 May, a tourism minister has said.

British visitors are the largest market for the country’s tourism industry, which has suffered during the coronavirus pandemic. Arrivals and earnings from the sector, which represents about 13% of the Cypriot economy, plunged on average 85% in 2020.

“We have informed the British government that from 1 May we will facilitate the arrival of British nationals who have been vaccinated … so they can visit Cyprus without a negative test or needing to quarantine,” the deputy tourism minister, Savvas Perdios, said on Thursday.

They’re gonna be doing it at home though after the first test in school...

The LFD tests were only found to be 48%
accurate when done by trained staff ..

So I’m not too hopeful about the home testing situation..

It’s a finicky process just getting the swab done properly ..

Some authorities are saying swab both nostrils for ten seconds each ..as the back of the throat option wasn’t working..

Plus no food or drink 30 minutes before the test ...

On this morning’s BBC Breakfast, interviewer Naga Munchetty put it to Mr Gibb that the LFD tests “detected just 48.9 per cent of Covid-19 infections in asymptomatic people”.

The 48 % figure is supported by a
SAGE paper.

Well as per usual weekend and Monday figures will be predictably low .. that said we are still around 10,000 new infections each day ... that’s the equivalent of nearly 4 million per year .

A few months ago I saw a highly renowned virologist on Sky News state that before you come out of a lockdown situation you must get the daily infection rate BELOW 100 !!!

That figure of 100 was the ‘generally accepted’ cut off point and above that is risky

we are literally not around 10,000 cases a day? you're talking like the daily cases this week have all been 9,000k? you really want more livelihoods to be destroyed until we reach 100 cases a day which is pretty irrelevant since it's mainly the hospitals admissions/deaths that are core now.

I fail to see how we could ever get to 100 per day tbh. Given the spread is mainly hospitals and carehomes, two of the few places we simply cannot shut down, for any length of time.

Cannot put the genie back in the bottle at this stage. 100 or less new infections a day is fantasy to me unfortunately

Only way I can see that we could get the stats to say that, is stop mass testing (or not include hospital/carehome infectinons). Which, would just hide the figures rather than alter them in any way.

Ok averaging 6,500 to 7,000 daily BUT those are ONLY the people being tested .. can you IMAGINE just how many actual new infections there are !!

there were nearly a million tested yesterday of which 6000 were positive, so there is still a lot of testing going on. The numbers of infected will decrease as the number of vaccinated increases. If we are at 40% vaccinated now, thats 40% of the population that wont be hospitalised and as they were the most vulnerable, it means the likelihood of future hospitalisation overall is very small. We shouldn't discount the tidal wave of change that has happened in a few short weeks

A load of data on there, though its only up to december. I expect more reports are due on it now as obviously, since september the 'school spread' will have gone down somewhat given less in school. Page 21, relevant data, but the whole thing is very interesting really.

Ontop of this, its kind of common sense that hospitals/care homes would be massive drivers, given how full they are, and the demographics that are most likely to be there to start with.

Hell, at 'normal times' our A&Es here are packed as full as bloody nightclubs, though significantly less fun!

It honestly baffles me that people could have thought it had dropped to zero or close to zero. Like I don't mean to be offensive but... what goes on in people's heads that would make them see that 0 and think "oh it was actually zero" and not know immediately that it was an error. How do people reach adulthood with seemingly no ability for critical thinking ... of any kind?

Check the link.

That's the lowest we've had in a year!
I think we will be alright, as long as we keep vaccinating as we are now.
It's working on controlling the virus.

Netherlands: over 30.000 jobs cut over 66 of the biggest companies

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/03/listed-companies-cut-over-30000-jobs-but-most-are-in-good-shape-fd/

The biggest 66 companies listed on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange cut their overall investments and dividends to shareholders last year, and are shedding a combined 30,000 jobs, the Financieele Dagblad said on Tuesday. FD researchers looked at the 2020 performance of the biggest listed firms and found, nevertheless, that most had performed well, with a few notable exceptions such as Shell, AirFrance-KLM and Arcelor Mittal.

Despite the planned job losses, most companies ended 2020 with the same size workforce as in 2019, the FD said. At the same time, it is clear that a large number of jobs will go, although not all in the Netherlands.

Nine companies have announced major redundancy drives, accounting for 30,000 jobs or 8% of their combined workforces. A further 12 companies say they plan to ‘reduce overheads’ or ‘streamline’ their workforces, which also means jobs will go, the paper said.

In addition to the redundancies announced by Heineken and KLM, the figures show that chip industry supplier Aalberts shed 1,300 jobs over the year, while Akzo Nobel’s workforce is down 1,600. ‘We did not opt for forced redundancies, but we did not continue annual contracts or fill temporary vacancies,’ a spokesman told the paper.

The research also showed that with the exception of Air France-KLM and Randstad, the listed companies had made very few claims for government support in paying wages.

‘If a company is simply treading water, as is often the case with smaller firms, then you need the support,’ said corporate finance professor Arnoud Boot. ‘But companies in the blue chip AEX index were not idle.’

6,573 out of 1.5 million isn't really a concern, the increase is only due to the fact today has been the largest testing day ever. The positive rate has declined since last week as well.

I think people are bored of being told what to do and being controlled. Winter is over... people keep being promised freedom and the goal posts keep moving just before it happens which is causing further frustration.

People were told once the burden on the NHS is lessened.. then when the vaccine hits (first eta September, then happens months later.. freedom surely? Nope Then they were told once the vulnerable and elderly were vaccinated freedom... nope? now that all 55+’s have been offered the vaccine and all vulnerable have also its now been pushed back further to 17th May/24th June, where it is looking likely to move again after Chris witty has spoken... meanwhile the USA and non Europe are all living like nothing has happened so it is frustrating that it seems to just be Europe locked down.

Stop making all these false promises if the modelling doesn’t suggest it or if it’s not going to happen

The reason it fluctuates could have something to do with when they do surge testing as that will catch asymptomatic cases where people wouldn't have got a test normally. Plus people will be more inclined to get tested now the kids are back in school to try and catch any potential outbreaks.

All other indicators are going in the right direction, as long as hospital admissions and icu patients continue to fall we are looking good. With the added protection of the most vulnerable being vaccinated.

That idea has been mentioned previously but given you can catch it and be showing symptoms ( or asymptotic) after 36 hours it is entirely possible that some or many of the recent infections are linked to the schools returning ..

Pound hits 12-month high on holiday and vaccine passports optimism...

Sterling soared to a 12-month high against the euro as the prospects of COVID-19 vaccine passports and a post-lockdown holiday boom boost optimism in the travel industry and for travellers.

After a poor start to the week, which saw sterling fall 0.65% against euro (GBEUR=X) and 0.5% against the dollar (GBPUSD=X), it made up some ground against the euro, passing the 1.17 mark on Wednesday morning.

It comes after, British Airways (BA) said it will introduce digital global vaccine passports in time for the planned reopening of international travel from 17 May.

BA, owned by International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG.L), will ask people who received their two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to log their details with their BA app, to prove that they are save to fly.

Additionally, the British flag carrier's boss boss also called for unrestricted travel for those who have been vaccinated and for non-vaccinated people with a negative coronavirus test as the industry gears up for overseas travel to recommence.

The UK experienced one of the worst rates of death in Europe in the first half of 2020, as previously reported, but in the second half of the year, six countries overtook the UK.

That meant by the end of the year the UK was in the top 10 worst-hit countries analysed but no longer at the top.

The worst-affected countries were Poland, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Data was not available for the full year for Italy.

Data covers up to mid-December, and of course, the picture is still evolving.

In the UK, there were 89,000 Covid deaths in 2020 and there have been 56,000 so far in 2021. And countries across Europe are seeing very different rates of infections now, which will lead to different patterns of death in the future.
