A man has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of assault after allegedly infecting 22 people with Covid.

The 40-year-old is alleged to have continued to go to work and the gym despite having a cough and a temperature of more than 40C (104F).

He is said to have walked around his place of work in Majorca, pulling his mask down, coughing and telling colleagues he was going to infect them.

Five colleagues and three fellow gym goers later tested positive.

Another 14 people - family members of the infected - also came down with Covid, including three one-year-olds.

This is shocking, though I seem to remember someone doing this to a train worker or something, near the beginning of the pandemic? What on earth is wrong with people like that. I mean, I understand still going into work for some if they really really would be ****ed without the wages. Its not 'right' but I cannot cndemn them for it either. But this coughing at people and purposely trying to spread? Thats another thing entirely.

--

This bit is irrelevant to quoted post now..

TS will prob know this..I read a few articles/studies early on in this, that said covid is not spread 'like flu' where you would expect, for example every infected person to spread to 2 more, or whatever. What I read said it was spread by only a few people (it was explained by..instead of saying everyone infects 2 more, it would be 1/10 people spreading it to 15+)..most will never pass it on, as its mainly 'superspreaders' that do it, and theres no way to now if someone is a superspreader or not. Googling this gives me no joy for updated material, but given how well read TS is, thought I might ask in here incase..apparently the spread thing is the same for SARs too, so it would make sense for it to be for this..

It 'solves' so many questions..like how some areas had near 0, but suddenly were hotspots and how some countries were hit quite as hard in the early days and it seemed random (Ie. not meaning..south korea who were hit less because of their quick response...but countries that acted largely the same). The spread looks almost sporadic a lot of the time if you follow the numbers quite closely, which would also tie in with that theory.

I mean, it makes no difference really HOW it spreads, and it doesnt mean people should act differently due to them not likely to be one of the spreaders (as you couldnt know, you COULD be the superspreader in your family/circle..). But that caught my attention a year or so back, and has stuck ever since.

I saved one of such links, discussing this months back. Just went to check it and its been removed..so maybe it HAS all been disproven now, as I dont see any other reason for the deletion :S

It WAS here - https://medanthroquarterly.org/2020/06/05/the-unknown-known-the-sars-past-of-covid-19/

i think it's got more to do with dominant strains. For example, i am firmly of the belief now that the north of england (and wales to an extent) had a more transmissible variant of covid throughout last years summer months and that why they just couldn't get the infection rate down no matter what tier they were in. We only started talking about strains and transmissibility around the world when the kent variant emerged, and we are kidding ourselves if we think that was the first such instance.

Europe are suffering from the kent variant. People have been relaxed about social distancing and that shows up when there is a more transmissible variant. India is suffering now because of that transmissible change and to be honest vaccination is the only semi permanent way out of it

Over here we're lucky that our vaccine rollout is very fast.
Otherwise we would also be in trouble.

In theory rural locations aren't a risk, any outbreaks in those will be short-lived just because of being rural, so it will "come and go". It's any large dense populations that are unvaccinated where there's a problem as it'll just keep bouncing around between people in that area and that's when you have a high risk of mutations.

at Germany's RTLde show Extra there was a subject about the ''illegal quick tests''

some reporters went undercover to see how this quick testing works via black market, own set up test centres

well talk about no hygiene whatsoever, and they re-use the test rod over and over, gross :yuk: so that rod goes through many different people's noses

even in some, first in the mouth (which makes no sense) then in the nose and stored to re-use it again

so their doctors and health experts who saw this, were shocked to see all of this, and yes re-confirm that only proper testing is with official test centres, where there is a licensed medical official present at all times, for example any sort of events where you got testing pavillions, centres that is good

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/04/riot-police-and-arrests-at-impromptu-kings-day-parties-nationwide/

summary on last night, nationwide illegal parties were ended by riot police

In Amsterdam, some 50 people were arrested and riot police were brought in to restore order in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district. ‘It was as if coronavirus did not exist,’ the council warden union BOA Bond said.

Earlier in the day, officials had closed parks in the capital and various other cities, as youngsters carrying coolboxes of beer and snacks poured in. Amsterdam’s canals were packed with pleasure boats, while huge groups of partying youngsters danced on the bridges.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema asked the city’s supermarkets and cafes to stop selling alcohol an hour before the 8pm deadline in an effort to encourage people to return home. Shortly before the last night of the curfew, the city was relatively quiet, although tonnes of rubbish left on the streets was testament to the day’s events.

The regional safety council said on Tuesday evening that most people had followed instructions to stay home, despite the problems in the bigger cities. ‘It makes sense that people miss events and a party… but it only by keeping to the rules that we can relax them,’ chairman Hubert Bruls said. ‘The speed at which we can phase out the measures, is largely up to us.’

In Breda, the Valkenberg park was closed because of the crowds and riot police moved in later in the afternoon to force everyone to move elsewhere. Over 100 fines were issued and two people were arrested.

Alcohol sales

In Groningen, council officials urged people to stay away from the Noorderplantsoen park because it was too busy and in Haarlem police told people to leave the city centre. The council also closed cafes and bars and urged supermarkets to stop selling alcohol.

In Eindhoven too, the council appealed to people to stay home and in Tilburg officials limited numbers who could enter the Spoorpark

In Leeuwarden, riot police were brought in to deal with a group of youngsters who were throwing bottles, and seven people were arrested at a party in woods near the Frisian village of Oudemirdum.

In Arnhem too, there were arrests after hundreds of people gathered in the Sonsbeek park for a spontaneous party.

Epidemiologist Alma Tostmann from the Radboudumc hospital in Nijmegen, said on Twitter that the videos of partying youngsters gave her ‘stomach ache’.

She urged people who have been in busy places to avoid contact with others this week as a ‘sort of quarantine’.

Worrying

And virologist Marion Koopmans urged people to remember that ‘we are not there yet’.

The spontaneous parties are ‘understandable’ given that everyone wants to be able to do more, she said. ‘But the situation is still worrying and we cannot allow ourselves to do too much.’

If there is a surge in coronavirus infections stemming from the King’s Day festivities, they will start to become apparent after seven days or so.

ummm just the younger people who are in a risk group to be vaccinated i think

i mean if you got all adults, elderly, everyone in risk group the jab, you can get 'herd immunity'

and repeat the same procedure each year, this will make virus slow down, numbers to go down massively

Sainsbury's has slumped to a £261m loss despite bumper food and Argos sales during the coronavirus pandemic.

The supermarket giant said that in the year to 6 March Covid costs "to help keep our colleagues and customers safe" had been "high".

However, it said it expected profits to bounce back in the coming year.

Rival Tesco reported a sharp fall in profits earlier this month after spending nearly £900m to carry on trading during the pandemic.

Sainsbury's said it had spent £485m on Covid-related costs, including paying colleagues that were required to shield or needed to self-isolate.

It also paid back business rates relief on its stores in line with rivals.

Sainsbury's £261m pre-tax loss for the year was despite like-for-like sales rising 8.1%.

Argos did especially well, with total sales rising almost 11% as digital sales boomed.

However, Argos standalone stores, rather than those inside the supermarkets, were closed for much of the year during lockdowns.

Sainsbury's online sales rose as coronavirus restrictions accelerated internet shopping. Online jumped from 8% of grocery sales to 17% during the year.

Netherlands: FieldLab has said about outdoor events, football matches can be with 1/2 of allowed audiences in stadiums under strict procedures, 50 or 75% of stadium capacity

only in current corona scenario it is a compulsory to wear a face mask

also testing paperwork with you, wether you are vaccinated or not

today was only about outdoor events, tomorrow they continue regarding indoor events which were still some uncertainties about for people, such as eurovision song contest if there can be a audience (and if so how, needs to be explained properly to the public overall)

regarding eurovision, maybe few doctors to oversee the testing at the pavillion, that everything goes the correct way

About 22 million people in the UK are living in areas that have not reported any Covid-19 deaths that happened in April, according to BBC News analysis.

By comparison, in a four-week period during January's peak, fewer than 50,000 people lived in such places.

The findings were greeted as "really good news [which] give us confidence" by one expert.

The government has urged people to keep following restrictions and have the Covid vaccine when called.

The BBC's data analysis reveals the extent of the improvement since January's peak.

Fewer than 600 deaths within 28 days of a positive test have been reported so far this month, compared with more than 30,000 in the first four weeks of January.

The figures suggest the UK's pandemic is moving into a new phase with many areas seeing low levels of coronavirus.

The latest lockdown, together with the vaccination programme, have successfully reduced cases, and as a result deaths.

"This is really good news," said Dr Mike Tildesley, an expert in the spread on infectious diseases. "It's a really good sign and we've seen several parts of the country where prevalence is really, really low. So, I think it gives us confidence."

But he echoed another expert who urged caution.

"[W]e have seen before, when things go wrong they can go wrong quickly," said Prof Graham Medley, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Slowly lifting restrictions means this is less likely to happen, he added.

I believe the new mRNA vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna) are more easily tweakable for emerging strains than the traditional viral vector vaccines (AZ, Sputnik) so that may be part of the reason, if these are going to be boosters for new strains.

a Pilot
A Nightclub, will be full "no masks"

A gamble

all opening stuff back up is a 'gamble' though really. Unless they plan on nightclubs and such being closed permanently, these kinds of test events need done :S

^that said though. I do feel the danger is 'over' regardless of what we do opening wise. As the success is wholy down to the vaccinations tbh. And vaccinated people remain vaccinated wether or not they are wearing masks, outdoors, or in a sweaty nightclub (which sounds bloody more horrendous than usual after a year and a half of hermit life!)

...yes. Unsure how else it would be a pilot, if they werent keeping track of the results :p

Vicky.
30-04-2021, 05:08 PM
A rather unethical way of pilotting though, would be to have say 100 negative covid tested people (who had been isolated for a few days and tested a few times, to check they truly are negative) in said club. And one positive one. With masks

Then another one. Where its the same demographics, but no masks.

To check how effective masks are in stopping spread in that situation.

Given I would assume its the mask thing they are more concerned about than the risk of spreading by many people being there as such, as masks are not really gunna work in a club.

I expect they are not allowed to 'test' like that though.

The latest assistance is on top of a package of support announced last week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "The UK will always be there for India in its time of need."

He added: "I am deeply moved by the surge of support the British people have provided to the people of India and am pleased the UK government has been able to play our part in providing life-saving assistance."

:clap1:

It’s such a dreadful situation .. how can we do much to help a countty with a population of 1.4 BILLION !!

It’s good that we’re helping other countries but what happens in a few months if WE need all those ventilators ?

we won't need them. The best thing the western world can do is get their relatively small populations vaccinated and then be in a position to pile the help toward india and other nations that experience similar.

1 is great but I do have a worry what the numbers will get to in the next couple of weeks that's gonna be the real test. Went to Liverpool on Saturday. The lack of social distancing and rule breaking going on everywhere you couldn't move for how busy it was I struggle to see how it won't spread when every town centre is a bustling hotpot. But I will try to remain optimistic as I did enjoy how normal it felt to be out

The hope is the vaccines will keep the vulnerable safe from severe disease even with an uptick in infections :fc:

the worry, though I fail to worry about it for now, are mutations that will side step vaccines, but that bridge will be crossed when we come to it

my nation's daily death numbers remain surprisingly low, even though there are a lot in our ICU's, Hospital

and sometimes ICU's decrease more than there are deaths either, so i can presume there have been some recoveries here, shame we do not make those public

the bloodbank here though said 1/3 of dutch people have antibodies, either from vaccine or from having had the virus and recovered (was on the news here this morning)

Cancer is around 220 - 250 per day in the UK, heart disease 300+ per day. Both are heavily skewed towards elderly as well but heart disease especially so, much like Covid (something like 2/3 of deaths from heart failure are in over 75's and only a tiny fraction are under-50's)...

So combined, the total is something like 550 to 600 per day. Throw strokes and non-Covid respiratory failure into the mix and the total is over 1000/day.

watched the video myself just now

good detailed step by step guidelines

also your accredation card for entering ahoy won't be active immediately, you first require a negative breathing test, and if result of test is inconclusive then you need a follow up test, if you had consumed alcohol day before, you need a nasal swab test instead

that card will only be allowed to become active after a negative test, after 48 hours had passed of that test, you require another negative test

Germany's new corona measures are that they only allow people in with a negative covid test

the test MUST take place at a official testing site, so that the negative test can be trusted and not faked

there are now 7 test locations at the border, it must be increased to 20

UK and India both 3 mutated strains

somehow there is a similarity

but i think it looks more dangerous in India because much more heavily populated areas, and not much space to socially distance there either especially in some of poorer communities + lacklustre measures, slow or not good vaccine rollout, basically one big disaster it has been for them
